- The Singing Ringing Tree Video
The Singing Ringing Tree is a wind powered sound sculpture resembling a tree set in the landscape of the Pennine hill range overlooking Burnley, in Lancashire, England.
Completed in 2006, it is part of the series of four sculptures within the Panopticons arts and regeneration project created by the East Lancashire Environmental Arts Network (ELEAN). The project was set up to erect a series of 21st-century landmarks, or Panopticons (structures providing a comprehensive view), across East Lancashire as symbols of the renaissance of the area.
Designed by architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu, the Singing Ringing Tree is a 3-metre tall construction comprising pipes of galvanised steel which harness the energy of the wind to produce a slightly discordant and penetrating choral sound covering a range of several octaves. Some of the pipes are primarily structural and aesthetic elements, while others have been cut across their width enabling the sound. The harmonic and singing qualities of the tree were produced by tuning the pipes according to their length by adding holes to the underside of each.
In 2007, the sculpture won (along with 13 other candidates) the National Award of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for architectural excellence.
The hills are alive with the sound of terror.
they should literally make a entire forest of them. honestly it would sound crazy. I would go for sure.
That would make wind breaks and would only sing from one side of the forest or edges, with the direction of wind which would also be cool as the sound would change at times
Wow, excellent idea ❤❤❤
Eerie sounding sculpture, totally unmatching the peace of the surrounding environment.
+KEPHALLE Couldn't disagree more, the sound is very soft and soothing, not to mention the fact it's quite static, almost mimicking the wind itself.
+Nathaniel Ouzana i can see how one could think that but its fucking creepy as hell
+Exkaliber Official well, I guess it's a thing of musical taste, I find tone clusters to be very beautiful.
Nathaniel Ouzana yeah i can see it to some extent. more of an ambient sounding thing
The Animals don´t look like the Sound is bad in this Environment. They look more that they like this kind of Sound. Btw, it is a very Natural Sound, just like the natural Wind Sound. This thing just makes it a bit louder than usualy, that is not a bad thing if you love Nature. :D
That sounds eerie as hell!
Having played a few recordings of this thing, it is haunting and sometimes disquieting in an unusual manner. If I was to re-invent/design it, I think I would try to tune the tubes/pipes to recognizable tones and intervals. The 'music' would still be random as the wind, thought it might be something one would perhaps by turns find pleasant.
That would require quite a feat of engineering
@@WobblesandBean - No, just a computer and an engineer.
@@WobblesandBean It'd be pretty much like designing and tuning a pipe organ, I mean not exactly easy, but certainly do-able.
@@therealchayd But what would it look like and play like!? I reckon they designed this with a mix of sound and shape in mind and looked for an optimum.
Just imagine how creepy it would be to have that thing near your house and hearing those sounds in the middle of the night.
in a post-apocalyptic world where all current knowledge is lost, this would be a sacred place.
Fallout
That sounds pretty eerie.
I do hope the area has thick fog sometimes.
It does....
@@henryhartley9993 boss battle.
Damn dude u replied after 7 years
Wherever this is, boss music is always playing.
@@witheeeeeerx - Bwuhahaha!
that's creepy sounding, would not want to live by that
I live in burnley
That creepy sounding is called, the natural Sound of Wind. This thing does only increase some DB to the Loudness in it´s Area of a Sound that is always be there in Nature.
Intrusion..
@@AquaTunes thing is they couldve made it sound much nicer
not included in this documentary is the part where they reveal its full name: the singing ringing tree of restless souls come back to haunt the earth
Wait fr?
Fr??
I think it's an amazing idea, it evokes so much in us!
This gives my shivers. No joke.
Does this remind anyone else that one episode of spongebob where all the air is blowing through the giant statue of spongebob?
Kermit Intensifies he lives under water, how is there air?
TheNehoc13 cartoon logic ..
YES
YESS
I think it’s terrifyingly beautiful!
Engineering design has never been fearless in all hues, sounds, rhythm, rhyme, of the winds that soars and is widespread. Keep going, continue to flow as the waters contnue doth flow in bright, in certainties of the vastness of the realm. SMEs..........respectively.
It's beautiful! Both visually and aurally.
Is more of a creepy sound kinda like from Silent Hill films and videogames but really nice at the same time!.
I pray my crazy neighbor Larry don't see this video.
lol!!
Hilarious!
On one hand, this is incredible, acoustics for the wind.
On the other hand, I think I'm going to have nightmares for weeks with this as a soundtrack.
That was unsettling beautiful.❤️
💗.💗
Thank you!⚘
Sounds scary
This is really awesome... It's in Lancashire, England
The car park is also used as a local dogging spot! 😂
It looks and sounds like a beautiful, fasinating creature!
"Beautiful"
Stunning genius.
This is the sound of a pissed off Mother Earth. "Dammit humans I can make my own music!"
0:56 - Sheep: MAKE IT STOP
That sounds spooky as hell
seriously, that is the most creepily ominous thing i've ever heard.
Amazing! Yet such an ... ominous... sound. I agree perhaps a more harmonic/melodic tone would be nicer. But truly - a work of art! And such a beautiful example of how humans and nature can co-mingle in most fascinating and breathtaking ways.
This is beautiful.
Those poor sheep.
I'm sure they hate that thing.
Right??
reminds me of the monolith in Kubricks Space Odysee. Great!
this is fucking terrifying, who thought this would be a nice thing
Amazing instrument!
Beautiful
Thunder~All the right noises
love it. sounds beautiful
Yea.. for 1 min and then a headache begins
Unbeliveable!!!!
awesome place to visit. if ya get the chance it's a lovely drive out there n the sound can be chilling.
To be honest Thank god the birds and sheep was there!!!
This is cool!
natural sounds,so perfect..
People say the sound is creepy, but this is the wind literally having a voice. I'm already imagining a post apocalyptic society where people worship the wind because of this sculpture.
Sounds dope! Thanks Ifunny
Now that's an SCP item if I've ever seen one.
scary, but i want one like that in my country,it's cool
fantastic
On the soundtrack for "The Exorcist" one of the tracks is called Beginning from "The Wind Harp" and this reminds me of it somewhat. You can hear it at the very beginning of the movie over the Warner Bros logo and just before you hear the violin.
that one creative creation, this is called nature, why do people hate it huhuh?
Imagine the sound during a thunderstorm at night.....I'd literally have my head under the covers.
🤣🤣 I hope someone records it like that.
escalofriante sonido
This is so cool ;D

+Bea amBach btw lol, if you read the uploader's ......description.....
+lin reynolds - the description that accompanies the video now was added AFTER I posted a year ago!! As you can see, the person who posted the video just copied and pasted what I found on Wikipedia.
Man, I want to do shrooms and sit under that beautiful artwork.
SquirtLover it would probably be a bad trip
You must be nuts!
I doubt they would appreciate those kids climbing on it.
golfgranny58 don’t think kids would willingly climb it.
Because we all need more noise in our lives.
Suena tenebroso!!! 3:
que rico sonido bota ese arbol >:3 rica instalación
amazing,,,,,,,,,,,
now that sound is quiet scary... (eerie sound) structure not bad :)
great vid
It looks like an alien ship haha or something, but very interesting sounds :D
The Blue Man group would love to play with this. nice post
Could listen to that while going to sleep
Should deck it out with windchimes too
Lord I'd die from miles away not even knowing what I was hearing.
Erie, Looks like something for a science fiction film. Pretty cool how they came up with it. Probably driving the seep nuts. ha ha
I like it it's relaxing
I could go to sleep to this 😴
That sound is amazing.
So this is where the ambient music in a horror game comes from... Good to know
Thank you for sharing this- I saw it on Escape To The Country and was curious how it sounded.
That’s gives the earth a voice. I would love to spend a whole eventing under the wind catcher.
se escucha tenebroso :3 pero me gusta grandiosa idea es un genio el que lo hizo haha (Y) Saludos desde la Ciudad de Guatemala...
Nearly slept off listening to that sound.
Beautiful idea, but I think it comes off as much spookier than intended.
hey i like this sound
Interesting how the wind sing through the pipes.
This is fun at night :D
wow ! :))
It needs a couple of Aeolian harps next to it to add to the mystic...
It's shaking, because it's probably quite hot there. And it's not bleeding, it was only marked by it's owner with a spray paint.
Way, WAY TOO CREEPY!!! But perfect for a Sci-Fi or some kind of horror film! This is just another curious example of what odd creatures humans really are!! :)
Sounds like the background sound effects for a sci-fi suspense movie...
Same. I thought like pleasant wind chime sort of sounds or..something...though it is still cool, I am quite sure it would get annoying after a few seconds and I would want to cork up all the pipes to make it stop.
Interesting, in a weird way, but maybe someone could build something like this while paying attention to musical notes, and cutting the tubes to lengths that produce actual notes, so that the notes that sound would produce musical chords the way a wind chime does. I guess that's probably not a simple as I make that sound.
Sheep be like, we gotta hear this shit everyday?! Lol
All hail the guardian of youtube.
deberían haber sido diferentes tipos y medidas de tubos (diámetros) para que hubieran distintos tonos del sonido.
The Blue Man Group would kill for that tree...
If there was a forest of these "trees", it would be terrifying.
It rhymes!
Alright you got me! I learned my lesson! *grumbles angrily to himself*
This is all you need for a soundtrack for a horror movie. Go and record this! lol
more just sounds than music. but pretty and relaxing. though. I would be terrified if I heard this at night or chanced upon it unsuspectingly. I bet you it takes animals some getting used to too. my cats freak out at weird noises.
me encanta, da miedo :3
Reminds me of that spongebob squarepants episode where the wind makes spongebobs holes sing and it attracts a school of jellyfish.
Oh wow! That's amazing! Really?! Well, youtube brought me here.
