- Ahh, remember the good old days, when short people were always portrayed as villans.
And I have to disagree with Mr Bear, she didn't look ugly at all, In fact, the kinder she becomes, the more ugly she becomes, until by the tales end, she is indeed once more a full on plastic princess. It's shocking !
Fun, enthralling tv fantasy from days gone by. In the way that only Eastern Europeans seemed to manage it. - Zábava
This program scared me to death when I was a kid but I never missed it. Thanks
Bloody hell, this terrified and fascinated me as a child!
I have been looking for a clip of this TV show for years on youtube. As a child, it fascinated and scared me in equal measures. The dwarf flying about always used to freak me out! Thanks so much for the upload.
The image of that fish when I was about 6 really blew me away, how wonderful to find it again ❤️
I absolutely loved this series when I was a young girl. This is the first time seeing it again. How wonderful it was. A classic 'good versus evil' story. Thanks for posting. I'll feel young again for a little while...
Ha ha I always thought this was in B&W but now I realise that we just didn't have colour TV's LOL
Me too !
Me too! ❤
Same here. 😁
Did anyone actually have a colour tv when this was on in England… because we didn’t and I didn’t know anyone who did.. but I did love the series
What a wonderful magical story. I too watched the tales from Europe as a child and loved the series. Last Christmas I shared the video with the primary schoolchildren I was working with and they loved it as much as I did. Timeless.
This fascinated me as a kid. It's theatre and storytelling at it's best. I was captivated from start to finish and with every episode.
This was such a creepy but compelling series!
I have been searching this for months! My childhood is complete.
Yes I’ve thought about it over the years, all I could remember was water freezing, maybe a unicorn?? But now I’ve seen the first seconds, yes! The dwarf blowing to get the water to freeze! Brilliant (im 63) but of course it was black and white on tv thrn, so colour looks very strange, Childhood memories, brilliant!
You can buy it on DVD. My son got it for me from amazon or somewhere.
Surreal and strangely disturbing to a 6-year old boy and definitely left an indelible impression! Childhood memories or is that nightmares?!?
Absolutely explains why my childhood memories are quite vivid and strange. Love this to bits.
If the evil dwarf didn't traumatise you enough as a child then bigfoot turns up for good measure :-o
He scared the crap out of me that scary dwarf.
Traumatized? I couldn't watch this without valium.
@@tessgregory987 xanax and brandy c;
dont mind bigfoot. i still, have to check large trees for green trolls! spraken ze deutch. achtung spitfire.....eh,..the horror....and still listen if clocks might strike 13.... wow....happy days
Big Foot?
Silly me, I thought it was Bungle.
What am I like?
Damn this messed my life up, now 61 and still scared !
Same haha
Oh, I know. It messed my life up too 😂😂😂
Scared the living crap out of me..but I still loved it
Been searching for this for ages, cold not remember the title only the scary Dwarfs...
Wow, I'm from Germany and this is one of the films I used to watch when I was little. I didn't know it has been translated to English. I love it, it's one of my favourite DEFA productions. Childhood memories come up :)
It was on British children's TV many times in the 60s and 70s.
i watched in england. it was still in german, but with english narrator...fascinating.
.even now,...i always check forests for evil green flying trolls, c;
Loved this as a 5year old in Scotland, now 45years later i think i still do!
OMG I remember this as a child, loved the singing tree, brought back so many fantastic memories!! I hope you show more of this from the beginning if possible please 🙏 🙂
OMG I have been looking for this for years. I first saw this as a child and I loved it. In fact I have never forgotten it.
Weird, creepy but compelling at the same time! Oh the memories!
Like everybody else, this scared the shit out of me as a kid in the 70's and even now as a 43 year old, I'm paranoid about our garden pond freezing in winter. In fact,I'm going to have to go and check it now....
Yeah I remember it well, but it was serialised in the sixties wasn’t it
Your maths doesn’t add up Nobby
If this film scared you, be glad not to have watched another east-german masterpiece: "Das kalte Herz" (1950). That one utterly traumatized German children.
A wonderful moral tale of the evil princess being humbled and earning her freedom through kindness and another reason we lazy Brits don't speak other languages because it was nicely narrated to us - no problemo!
as a german in the GDR i remember seeing this movie in kindergarten or early schoolyears back in the seventies
no child was notably impressed or scared. it was just another nice fairytale.
I was born 2000 in (former East)-Germany and grew up watching this movie cause it's my mums favourit fairytale-movie. I remember that I didn't liked it that the prince gets enchanted to a bear and that the princess gets ugly, but I never get an idea that this could be terrifying. It's incredible how culture shapes our flavour.
thankyou so much I never thought I would never see any of this footage again, my aunty loved this and she thought she had made it up lol.
Puffin stuff
Like many others who have commented on this I used to love watching this as an 7/8 year old back in 1967/68. Scary dwarf!! Thanks.
Probably the first horror film I ever saw, I was only five, lol
I used to watch this as a kid! it was a scary weird show, it still is! Very cool though!
Have this on old school VHS. "Tales From Europe" was my favourite TV series when I was a kid. SPOOKY!
I have faint memories of this, but had no idea what it was called. That dwarf was scary! Thanks for the upload, glad to know this was a real programme, and not just a weird dream! lol
How disturbing is the evil dwarf?...used to scare the absolute shit out of me watching it back in the early 70s!
God im with you. I had a memory jog lastnight and found this on here, was it too much beer? Nah, bloody scared the crap out of me too. Back then no childrens tv, you got this scarefest just before the cricket on BBC1.
The dwarf scared the Shit outta me when i was a Kid and He still does 😂😂 weird
and he hid under the bark of trees! im still having therapy.
Still scares me now, I am 55 and must dream about this regularly. Suddenly realized I could use the Internet to search out the source of my traumas.
I know plenty of them. Little man's syndrome!
After 40+ years I feel scarred & scared all over again.
I only ever saw it in black & white as a kid and it was much scarier than in colour! (It was broadcast in B&W, and I don't think colour TVs even existed then)
It looks like the 'ice' around the fish was the traditional wax just as SFX folks use today.
Great clip, no idea how I got here but I feel like I have had a little daydream.
Best wishes from an Englishman in a French forest. 🌞
This scared the living daylights out of me when I was a child. Actually, it still does........but you can see why The Fast Show gave us their take on it.
Fair play to her for saving that fish !
She deserves recognition 👏
This was weird and frightening and riveting when I was a kid. It is very imaginative and visually different.
This must be where my from-childhood-hatred of Dwarves comes from!
How a tv program from so many years ago can stick in your head. That person with restricted growth (dwarf) scared the shit out of me
I used to cry to this magical show as a young boy.
Hannible 100 i bet you wouldn't say that to that little dwarfs face.
I have looked for this for years!! I loved it...thank you!
Scared the pants off me as a child (the dwarf was the most scary) and it is still disturbing now!
Wow I loved this weird little show as a child, happy days.
The dwarf flying into the pit at the end stayed in my mind for 40-odd years!
I remember this from my childhood it’s still as creepy today 50+years later as it was then 😮
WOW! Singing ringing tree! Young Boy & loved this! Very strange & Brilliant! Nordic roots? Lol. Loved this as a small boy in the 60's.x.
The dwarf gave me nightmares for years and it was in black and white which made him coming out of the tree more freaky
When the dwarf flys up in the air at the end cackling that evil laugh is just unforgettable as well as his fall and disappearance into the ground!
Scared me to death
Marvellous. Happy days, when I was very young. Thank you for posting.
Showed this to my teenagers said hey I loved watching this 40 odd years ago they were like what the hell 😂 remember this episode .thank you for uploading xx
Aaaargh... it's even more scary in middle age than childhood. And in colour... I'm off behind the sofa.
Forgotten all about this...bloody great..thanks very much ❤️🇬🇧
Magic in fantasy and in reality. I loved this so much but was scared of it too due to its deepness( for a small child ) and it's good vs evil connotations.
Absolutely! hahaha First time I've seen it in colour! Loved this when I was a kid! :-))
very creepy when I was a kid, but loved this programme and always remember the stranded fish that she saved.
I saw a picture of a tree will bells hanging on the branches & remembered this TV show that I'd watched as a child.
bloody hell , came across this by accident , brings back memories , THANKS
loved this when i was a kid
my god been looking for this for years, the freaky dwarf show, spellbound and creeped out at the sametime when I was a kid, thanks
Michael Sheen Brought me here...Cheers ole Chap.
haha..me too! Thanks, Nerdist Podcast and Michael Sheen!
I've been searching for this programme, it still gives me knightmares!
I watched this in the '60's on B&W TV. This is the only part I really remember vividly. I think the whole sequence just freaked me out, especially the creepy dwarf!
This is one of the first things I can ever remember watching on TV and like most others I found it riviting and terrifying in equal measure! The dwarf looking through that hole and then it filling back in was the stuff of nightmares! I can't imagine anything like that being made nowadays.
Totally agree, gave me knightmares!
this was what nightmares are all about , watch the whole thing , even now it is scarier than most horror films.
Fond Memories of the 1960's, thank you for the upload.
So many childhood memories flooding back!!
Def remember Goldenhair... also, anyone recall Three Wishes for Cinderella? The Cinders story but all dubbed and set in the snow, with the wicked stepmother all in fur! Had a wicked theme tune...
'A good deed is always more powerful than evil magic.......now rub this as hard as you can'
This episode terrified me as a child!!!
I always thought it was sad when we saw the fish for the last time and it’s just got left stranded as she got rescued by the doves.
I’ve never heard of this but it’s interesting and strange - two things I like in classic entertainment!
Ich bin eine Prinzessin! I have this on dvd - my children couldn't believe this is what we watched back in the day!
I loved tales from Europe I loved this so much as a kid ive bought the dvd .
Me too, it's a wonderful story. I shared this last Christmas with the primary schoolchildren I was working with and they also loved it.
This is where my submechanophobia started, that fish thing, scary as a kid watching years ago.
I think there was a bloke dressed up in that fish outfit, ......missed that when I watched as a kid.
This is an old children's piece of film from a time when geniuses of the media world would teach our children with good moral education that parents could trust - it might be German or Eastern European, and they may also have been biosed against aging, ginger haired midgets but all the same the child is taught to attract inner beauty via good outwardly deeds. Nice model of the fish too - a golden age of the media! :) Jx
I had a memory of watching this as a child, but people my age didn’t seem to know what I was talking about - a dwarf, a bear. Just watched a BBC programme on TV and they featured this. Didn’t even know it was called the Singing, Ringing Tree. Thanks for posting
The perpetual weirdness is strong in this one.
this programme well and truly fecked me up and to this day im scared shit less of dwarfs 😢
So loved this as a child.
Yes, these were all under the 'Tales From Europe' banner. I remember another one called 'The Magic Tinder Box'.
Scared me so much, I really had nightmares about the Dwarf and I Truly believed in magic. I had a reoccurring dream so many times about a multi coloured waterfall and landscape.. even now I get the creeps with that Dwarf and I am 54 😋
freaked me out as a kid in the 60s
I remember Thursday evening TV had the Eastern european progs on...thursdays were my favourite day...the school week nearly over, and good stuff on Television! Sunday eves were the worst....school the next day for a whole 5 days....
My Dad told me to look for this... It explains a lot.
Holy crap! A vague memory of terror softened only slightly by colour. The exorcist et al has nothing on this.
god i remember this ,must be mid 60s!
thankyou for this i am 47 years old and think about it often it was so bloody scary and its great to know many people thought the same the dwarf was made for nightmares
What a Great movie set...good scenes..
this programme well and truly fecked me up and to this day im scared shit less of dwarfs !!
My God this brings back so many memories during the school holidays. This and Robinson Crusoe! Does anyone remember another play done by the same people called Goldenhair. Don't seem to be able to find any reference to that one, but definately remember it.
Scariest thing ever on TV. Who thought that was suitable for British children I have no idea, but then again it was probably classed as a comedy in 1950s East Germany.
Yeah, this scared me shitless as a kid :)
Ye me too but I still watched it LOL
Tales from Europe and I watched it also and I was scared shitless too glad I was not the only one, creepy beyond words. I hated that Bear.
Same here
dashed home from school to watch this back in the 60s
The dwarf was pure evil !!
We were terrified by this series!!
This is just the best T.V. Ever!
a great programme
The princess always looked better with dark hair.
like a common dream for fifty year olds
I remember this, but not in colour. In our area we didn't get colour until 1977.
Happy memories. Thanks for posting.
Me too but they were so magical I loved the tinderbox
This truly scared the crap out of me. There was not really a childrens TV back then. You would get something like this Herges adventures of Tintin followed by the Flashing Blade, then hours of cricket. But also, there was this scare trip. I had some beer last night and for some reason found this, i thought it was all a dream then realised it actually happened. Bizarre too that the girl is narrated by a bloke!!! Conspiracy theory too, that as it was East German it was designed by the KGB in Russia (Soviet Union) to freak us all out, its sure did!!!! Thank god for Scooby Doo or the Hairbear Bunch at 5.15pm , that was it, maybe an hour and a half of kids telly a day.
