  • How did the Olympics become the greatest show of sporting excellence on Earth? Dig into the history and evolution of the global event.
    --
    Thousands of years in the making, the Olympics began as part of a religious festival honoring the Greek god Zeus in the rural Greek town of Olympia. But how did it become the greatest show of sporting excellence on earth? Armand D’Angour explains the evolution of the Olympics.

    391 AD they shut down the games. In 405 AD they murdered the last librarian, Hypatia, in Alexandria and burned the Seripium. In 529 AD they closed the Academy of Athens and sent the scholars into exile. The Christians of late antiquity turned off a lot of lights prior the dark ages.

    • @loriefranceschi2590
      @loriefranceschi2590 Před 9 lety +28

      +CHAS1422 That's why we had the dark ages. Who turned out the lights? Why the Christians turned them out.

    • @josephang9927
      @josephang9927 Před 9 lety +10

      It is not clear who killed Hypatia, and you could blame many pagan and christian thinkers who were very anvious of her.

    • @josephang9927
      @josephang9927 Před 9 lety +31

      Also, the alexandrian library was destroyed by muslims fer in the middle ages.
      Christians probably destroyed some pagan books, but they admired ancient thinkers and preserved their works in monasteries.

    • @CHAS1422
      @CHAS1422 Před 9 lety +26

      +Joseph Ang History must always be taught in absolute truths. Patriarch Cyril and his Lackey Peter, along with a mob of Christians were responsible for the death of Hypatia, (daughter of Theon), and there is no question among historians . Theophilus, mentor of Cyril, burned the Seripium to the ground in a show of Christian dominion a decade earlier. Orestes, the last of the secular governors of Alexandria, was deposed and exiled soon after the death of his friend Hypatia. The library had no protection and was lost in history after these events. All literary focus after Christian hegemony was established in Alexandria at the beginning of the 5th century was Theological drivel. These events were almost 200 years prior to the blood and devastation wrought by the invading Muslims. I doubt the 4th century Christians had any respect for preserving pagan works on geometry, or neoplatonism. Christianity is best when it submits to secular laws and secular science. It is worst when theological laws and education are the laws of the land.

    • @Soletestament
      @Soletestament Před 9 lety +7

      +CHAS1422 >.> Catholicism, which was the only brand of Christianity at the time, was a government. And prior to that it was a doomsday cult. Neither of which are relevant to the majority of religious practices in the present. Religion is nothing but a form of government. As such they're going to do things governments throughout history have done. Including forcefully controlling information through the destruction of historical works and siccing their people on minorities to distract them from poor governance. It irks me how many people can't see that. Worse that they can't see the difference between one religious institution and another. Seriously it's like saying Sweden is responsible for exterminating native Americans because the US and Sweden are both Democracies.

    A full commitment's what I'm thinking of
