What happened to the classic number 9? Well, football evolves, so do positions, and the way goals are scored. Where once we had Shearer, Ronaldo and Crespo, we now have Salah, Mbappe, and Mane.
But there are still some classic number 9’s lurking in Europe. Seb Stafford-Bloor discovers some of the number 9’s of the future. Illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

#Goals - Sport
It’s crazy how a prime David Villa would’ve been appreciated so much more in the modern game. His style of play was surely ahead of his time.
He was rated as one of the best in the world at the time. What about his game do you think would have given him extra praise in the modern game?
Villa is a legend. One of first names I thought of as well.
@@thefootballpunnedit other than the obvious things Villa was praised for (consistency, ability to thrive in big games, and ability to adapt his game as he aged) I feel like things such as his tactical awareness, teamwork, and ability to bring others into play, while still remaining the primary goal threat was underrated. His first touch and decision making was unmatched by any other out-and-out strikers in Spain for at least a decade.
@@thefootballpunnedit He was more than just the guy that helped Barcelona destroy Real Madrid in some classicos, top goal scorer for Spain, and helped Athletico Madrid secure a title in his European swansong. When he was the main man for a team, like his time at Valencia, it was a lot easier to see just how amazing and underrated he was. Year after year he would help find a way to break through a defense, and he found so many ways because of those aformentioned abilities and much more.
@@ario4550 Streets won’t forget that attacking trio of Villa, Silva and Mata!
Messi vs Ronaldo slowly killed off the _“Top Forward”_ debates. Who ‘cares’ about 30 a season when 2 men were scorning a combined 120-130 a season.
Agreed, they set the standards so high that others look small in comparison
You are absolutely right. Benzema is having the season of his life scoring more than 40 goals this season just to find out Messi and Ronaldo achieved that more than 10 times
@@ayman8545 and they've both hit 60+ in a season and 70+ in a year 😂. Even now Ronaldo is on the verge of another 30+ season
I just consider Messi an alien and Ronaldo a machine. It makes it easier to appreciate the regular skilled humans lol
Very true.suarez and lewa still at it then and now tho
Video title should have been "Where are all the centre forwards" due to its emphasis on physique and linking up play. Many goal scorers nowadays are inside forwards and attacking midfielders.
Can't believe Ibrahimovic isn't there on this list. Mark my words he is amazing youngster with bright future
True he just turned 21 yesterday
Ehhh he will never amount to anything...
@@efeetham15 In PES games from the PS2 the retired players returned with the same stats but younger, maybe that's the case here

@@TheBalulinho he will end up with more goals than Lewa and you’ll fail to explain to your kids and grandchildren how Lewa was better hahaha
I don't follow Portuguese football that much, but after watching Evanilson once I have been following Porto more often. He just seems like a guy who's on nobody's radar but will explode in a few years. The guy has everything you'd want in a striker, and yes you guys are right, he certainly has the tenacity and aggression of Diego Costa. It's Nunez who is stealing the headlines for now, and for a good reason I have to say, but keep an eye out for Evanilson who is technically superior and would suit top teams more.
Evanilson is a gun. Took longer to adapt European football. Came from my club in Rio. Ceiling is very high but the gap between Brazilian and European football is enormous…
I wouldn't say he's technically superior but does seem to have the raw skillset to succeed in tougher leagues
As a Porto fan, I can say that for sure. Evanilson has the capability and skill to become the next great brazillian striker. Darwin Nuñez is a beast too, no doubt
Tired of losing bëts on football games? Do what my name says. You will like what you see......🦇
POOOORTOOOOO 💙🤍
Oshimen moved to Napoli in summer 2020, that's almost 2 years ago, and he's 23 so he should be in this list
I was wondering the same thing too.
Please do this with midfielders and defensive players too!! Really enjoyed the video
Midfielders generally need more appreciation. And although it's hard to quantify how he helps the game, Thomas Müller of Bayern München needs more appreciation
5:20 those are the widest wingbacks I’ve ever seen :O
Lol
I feel sad that I was too young to ever appreciate Messi and Ronaldo. No one will reach the levels they reached for a long time, and it will be interesting seeing all these youngsters but it will feel like I missed out on greatness because these new guys just won’t be Messi or Ronaldo.
Damn now I feel old that u say that lol... I’m only 18 but was still able to see them in their prime..
@@mike04574 I’m only 18 too but my family never had access to the matches they played, and they also never supported any teams so the tv was never on soccer. I always loved football but had no way to watch it, and that’s what sucks the most. I really could’ve watched it but life just didn’t allow me to
I missed watching a prime Maradona or Pele. My father missed a prime Cruyff and George Best. They'll be someone. There always is.

If you're Juve (for example) you already have Vlahovic so it's more logical to buy Raspadori, while if you are Inter you should buy Scamacce because you already have 3 second strikers (1 of whom will leave) and only old man Dzeko as main striker.
I doubt we have the money to buy him and need a CAM and RW so we’ll probably stick with origi. Plus sassuolo asks for stupid prices for their players.
Wow, Tifo's art style has improved by a lot over the past few years.
Frankly, Juventus got ahead and got started with Vlahovic. Fantastic signing for 70M, he's given them an upgrade in quality and Juve can build around him. Very intelligent of them

Karim Adeyami from RB Salzburg looks like a cinch to score 25+ goals for any of the top European leagues. Fast, skilled and with a great bose to find space in closed spaces, he has the technical ability to score goals in the final 3rd during long possessions and the pace to be a devastating goal threat on counters.
hes gonna be great addition to BVB. Will form great duo with whoever is Haalands replacement and Reus behind them
@@dzemilmehovic5271A striker duo of Adeyemi/Moukoko is going to be insane. Especially if teams that routinely use 4 defenders.
Dortmund still needs some help from the wings but Knauf and Gittens have a ton of potential.
@@MarquisdeSuave Gittens especially hes similar to Jadon but much more explosive. Knauff is great too, better as wingback and perfect if we use 3atb which we could
@@dzemilmehovic5271 totally. I watched the recent games where Dortmund featured Gittens and was amazed at how advanced he looked against top competition. He's ready to play at 17 and I don't even think we have seen how good he can be.
Darwin is the definition of a goal scorer. I am portuguese and watch the league every week, and the false 9 and crossing parts are not accurate. The guy is fast and strong and shoots. It works, a lot, but he doesn't do much else
Yeah, dont get when he says hes has very IQ, its probably his biggest weakness, hes to one dimensional
Wrongggg
Near the bloody box
"He spots players in better positions and can operate as a pivot"
One of Darwin's weaknesses at Benfica is not finding players in better positions and never passing it to them. He doesn't often shoot when he gets the ball, that is true, but anyone that watched Benfica knows that Tifo got this one horribly wrong because it's easily Darwin's worst weakness apart from extending the ball too much often
I was looking him up ever since he was scoring goals in CL and was linked with Man Utd and Liverpool move this summer for inflated value. He indeed cant pass and is played with Ramos who is the one linking play up and coming deeper for the ball. He needs further development before the big move and he is not worth the projected price I would say.
@@vasilijefilipovic1761 I mean, we can simply look at the Liverpool game and realize how many 1v1's Rafa and Ramos could have gotten if Darwin took his eyes off the grass and actually played a pass for once, he definitely needs improving

I have a feeling that we shouldn‘t give up on Luka Jović. Look for him to move clubs in the summer and have an amazing bounce back season.
true, just look at haller. was part of the same legendary frankfurt team with similar performances
He needs to get out of Madrid as soon as possible to save his career
There’s a possibility that he’s just far more suited for German league.
It's the benzema curse, until he leaves, no striker can shine in Madrid.
Luka Jovic doesn't work enough.
Haller was great at Eintracht, failed go adapt to West Ham and is better than ever for Ajax.
Jovic didn't played at all in Benfica and failed complety at Real.
He just played well in Eintracht. And even there, when he returned didn't had much of an impact.
Osimhen can be in this list. He's under 24 and moved in 2020.

Tifo asking the important questions. Great content.
As a Porto fan, I have to say that Evanilson will surely be a top target for many clubs next season. He's still adapting not just to European football, but also to a very demanding coach, and while he still has long way to go, he's definitely succeeding in that part, which is usually the most difficult one. Darwin will definitely be going at the end of the season, as he's clearly one of the best forwards in European football already, but we'll be talking a lot more about Evanilson next season.
Nunez was really good against Liverpool. They are experts in catching players offside and it was a real problem for him but his quality was without doubt.
Evanilson will be on point in two seasons time. As you said, he is still adapting and this season was important for him to gain a starting eleven spot
Can you make a video on Chelsea. why they are struggling to score enough goals? Is it lack of creativity? Is that down to the system? Is there a player that suits their system that they can bring in? Are some players suited to different style of play?
Its bcuz of lack of good strikers.....next season they won' be having that problem since the most talented striker of all time (Broja) will be back from loan
Maby bc they don’t like to play attacking football they like to defend instead
A large part of Chelsea’s creativity came from the wingbacks. When Chillwell and James got injured, our goals dropped and so did our creativity. If you look back earlier in the season you’ll see that our strikers were actually playing well and were receiving good passes and chances. I think it would be best for Chelsea to get a more centrally creative person to work alongside the wingbacks, like maybe Hazard.
But it isn’t just the wingbacks. Chelsea have a history of getting hit or miss strikers. This season we have struggled with strikers finding consistency, which makes it hard to score goals despite how many chances we create. Chelsea needs their strikers to be more consistent, like Diego Costa.
@Hazardinho Don’t tell me Chelsea don’t create chances. They do create chances. Their forwards are just not finishing them. How many chances does Madrid need to score when they have Benzema. Tuchel system is not the problem. There are weak players in the system. Azpilicueta can’t hold a wingback position. Marcos Alonso is great going forward but more often than not unreliable going back. I can go on about the weakness in the squad depth in different positions especially wingback which is imperative to the 3-4-3 formation. I’m not gonna speculate. If I can see the issues from watching them on TV, I believe Tuchel knows what to do. Next season is going to be defining for him if he gets the players he wants.
@SeanL94 don't listen to this guy he's waffling
Can we get a video on Henry at Barcelona? I have no idea what happened out there and your Lineker vid was excellent
Osimhen should have been included,he has been in napoli for more than 12 months.
Evanilson is yet another product of Fluminense's great academy (producing the likes of Marcelo, Thiago Silva, Fabinho and João Pedro). He's very skillfull but what stands out is his finishing - he's a natural poacher, scoring from the most defying angles. Back here in Fluminense that's why he earned the nickname "Lewanilson". He deserves to be in a top 5 league teams!
Love Fluminenses kit
Although in a lower league, I feel like Lorenzo Lucca should've been involved. Similar to Kalajdzic's situation where they struggle a tad bit due to lack of production, Lucca is still an outstanding player with the way he manages his 6 foot 7 inch frame as he has a lot of pace for a guy that big. He's in a goal rut right now but the form he showcased at the start of the season in serie b was a flash of the potential he has.
I MISS THIS FORMAT OF VIDEOS! Was why i subscribed when i first started watching the channel
Watched this with a smile on my face. Tifo is a beautiful cross between football and poetry - such depth and eloquence, along with a relaxed background tune. Tifo is the cure to depression.
Happy for the Awoniyi shoutout. I'm not sure what his ceiling is but almost every time I watch Union I'm reminded he is no joke
Evanilson has a footballer's name so I suspect we'll see him in top 5 league soon
The background music is so soothing and calm :) accommodated with Tifo's silky voice, makes his videos a good bedtime story.
It’s either these guys, United view, or John Oliver to play in the background
The title made me think of the folk song "Where have all the flowers gone?" I want to hear Shirley Collins sing about Gianluca Scamacca.
Lorenzo Lucca is my pick for the future. And yes that is because he is a killer in my FM save lol
It’s quite obvious, it’s the evolution of total football.
The modern game requires so much pace and movement, it’s squeezed out the goal scoring specialists.
If you go back and watch even late 90’s football, it was a slower more tactical game.
This is why God sent broja to earth in the 21st century
Imagine if broja was born in the 70s or 80s
He'd be scoring 222 goals per season and football would've become more boring than cricket
@@christianopulinaldo8319 who
@@christianopulinaldo8319 defensive rules in 80s 90s was were very lenient he wont have survived
Pace does not mean that the football is better or that it somehow produces better footballers. Spain won back to back European championships and a world cup playing slow football. Real Madrid won three Champions leagues in a row playing slow patient football. The idea that fast ping pong football is better is absurd.
@@bighands69 I would think both styles are just as effective. A slower posession based system is excellent for controlling and dominating the opposition, while creating a steady stream of chances. A fast high tempo system can create tons of chances, in particular high quality ones and afford forwards the space and time in the final third to do their thing
Graphics are on point. Big up Tifo 🔥

Video idea: PSV is really likely to lose the goat Sangare to the premier league for serious money. Who should be his replacement?
With PSV set to lose Sangare this season, tifo and the athletic decided to team up to look at sensible replacements. The obvious choices would be Kante and Rice, but they would never play in Holland and are too expensive, so in tifos opinion the most sensible choice to replace Ibrahim Sangare would be..........
Ibrahim Sangare.
There's also Eddy Nketiah at Arsenal. Very young and with amazing potential.
There is a severe lack of strikers. I think ballacks comments on van dijk summed it up well.
There is also a lack of passing midfield players in the game and dribbling wingers. There are lots of speed merchant dribblers that rely on space and space to break beyond the defence but rarely do you find wingers trying to dribble pass somebody with a mixture of foot skill and speed.
@@bighands69 i think there is a lot mf spamming through balls but dont know bout wingers tho
@@bighands69 I think there are still passing midfielders tbh but I agree with you on the lack of truly elite wingers who combine pace and technical dribbling. Salah is a perfect example of it.

Glad to see Scamacca getting some attention. First heard of him through Football Manager 🤣 and as you do start taking an interest in your FM club. He looks a fantastic player with a very bright future. Hope to see him at Spurs one day 😁. Keep an eye on Raspadori as well 😉
Osimhen signed for Napoli 21 months ago and is in his second season
I guess it's not Europe yet but City signed Julian Alvarez who just may become the next Aguero.
Bayern Leverkusens Patrick Schick deserves a mention. 22 goals in 25 games😳
It’s the evolution of football there’s only a handful of actual out and out strikers. But most teams play with a false 9.
I do not think it is evolution it is just a low period. There is also a lack of passing midfield players and a lack of dribbling wingers.
Today there are lots of wide fast forward players that cannot dribble or finish. Teams have adjusted to that.
I remember there was an era in the 1990s where there was a lack of wide forwards with there being central strikers and dribbling wingers. Modern Attacking half are good at getting into the box to score but they are not good at breaking down defences with a through ball.
actually very few teams play with a false 9. dropping between the lines to receive and link up play doesnt make u a false 9
@@bighands69 lack of passing midfielders and dribbling wingers? u sure u watching football mate?
@@bighands69 what there are alot of skillful wingers in todays game

Modric and De Jong are the only passing midfield players in the modern game. I am not talking about making the big 40 yard pass to a strikers feet or splitting open a defence. I am talking about high volume passing of the ball and controlling games by that passing which is rare today.
Very few wingers today are true dribblers they are more like wide forwards that can run with the ball but in terms of speed and pace. They need balls to be played in behind the defence. An example of that would be somebody like Kylian Mbappé who is a skillful player but is not trying to run dribbles through a defence.
A player like Messi would have been able to play that winger role if he desired as he was good at dribbling but he was so good overall that he got used in another capacity.
Good scouting shortlist for a basketball team also.
As well social media is the problem too because they put more pressure on the young players
The younger the players are though, they will be of the generation that grew up with social media. It’s the equivalent of newspapers.

Hi
I think that you could also add Zirkzee, Pavaldis and bayo. Two of whom are playing in easier leagues granted, but continue to put up good stats and have shown glimpses of great potential. And Bayo has managed to impressed with the burden of playing for a side with limited ability like clermont
Mbappe to Madrid
Haaland to City
Nunez to United
Scamacca to Arsenal/Newcastle

Would love one of these for midfielders
can you do a video called "is the number 9 dead?" would really like to see that style of question asked
There are a lot of big forwards in this video, is this a reflection of the greater emphasis on ball playing centre backs who aren't necessarily as physical as they used to be?

Good to see tifo doing some scouting for man utd
If looking for goal scorers, why limit yourselves to number 9s ?!
Alot of goals come from wide areas now !!
Liverpool have proven with Jota,Mane,Diaz and Salah. Find a winger/forward who is competent at key attacking aspects in the final third, work on their finishing. Natural inborn goalscorers are great to have but can prove difficult to acquire. Don't rush for Haaland, sign and work on Adeyemi instead or Nkunku e.t.c. That's why Barca with Fati and Ferran are very likely to dominate Europe in 3-4 yrs time.
wouldnt say very likely but interesting things are happening there
What? Osimhen is in his 2nd Napoli season. He should be included
Yeah he's under 24 and in his second season, I don't get it either
I would absolutely love for you guys to do a video about what we mean nowadays by a 'world class' player. What exactly is it that makes a world class player?
The description of Nunez is literally a mirror image of Forlan
Great video 🔝
What about raspadori?? He is a quality player
When talking about a true 9 I think of Luis Suarez
We've been spoilt by Ronaldo and Messi. There's your short and sweet answer.
To not include Osimhen and Abraham doesn't really make sense considering they will most likely be the two biggest transfer fees this summer it would of made sense if you done we are not doing any strikers who have recently joined one of europes top 10 teams as they would be unlikely to leave
Players having joined a club within 1 year are unlikely to leave… even after a big debut season at a bigger clubs despite many transfer rumours. Martinez/Haaland are obvious examples in recent years
@@Thealan93 Yeah I'm aware of that that's why I mentioned if they wanted to add such a rule a better option would have been to not add any players who have recently joined a top 10 European club which would have been the situation for haaland and martinez so they wouldn't of been included in the list and as I said before to not include the two strikers in this category who are likely going for the two biggest fees this summer doesn't make a great deal of sense
Serie A is farmers league, no players should be included.
I really like Jonas Wind, seems like a really intelligent forward
Can you put meters too?( For Europeans)
I hope i will get on that list in 2-3 years!!!
All things considered, United could do with one of these. Probably won’t be Nunez if he wants champions league and Benfica want £100m for him, but there’s a few who would be a good option as a Greenwood/Ronaldo/Cavani replacement.
👀 very nice Tifo
"We are not sure what Charles De Ketelaere's position is going to be" man we are not even sure who that is
As a Bayern fan I would like to see our club sign Darwi Nunez. Given Lewandowski's contract situation, I think it's better to think for the future in the long term.
I miss the Beckham - Van Nistelrooy combo. Now wingers just want to shoot and strikers are forced to be 10s
If city get haaland I feel like De Bruyne will be that person.
That combo would be the silver lining to the end of a competitive league for at least a couple seasons lol
Beckham is now trent
Ajax under Ten Hag loved to cross the ball and use width in the classical sense.
It is because we use 4 3 3 now and wingers are required to be inverted. So they have to be able to cut in and attempt to score and not just provide crosses
yep Beckham would probably be a wing back these days
I think Alexander Isak should be on a few bigger clubs radar too.
start of video: where is Konate? Also me at the end of video: KONATE ON THE CORNER DELIVERED BY ROBBO!
This looks like a shopping list for a certain club looking for forwards

It's curious how Tifo always needs to state that they overlook the Portuguese League, but still they continue to come here for more and more content, over and over again.
