What happened to the classic number 9? Well, football evolves, so do positions, and the way goals are scored. Where once we had Shearer, Ronaldo and Crespo, we now have Salah, Mbappe, and Mane.
But there are still some classic number 9’s lurking in Europe. Seb Stafford-Bloor discovers some of the number 9’s of the future. Illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

A large part of Chelsea’s creativity came from the wingbacks. When Chillwell and James got injured, our goals dropped and so did our creativity. If you look back earlier in the season you’ll see that our strikers were actually playing well and were receiving good passes and chances. I think it would be best for Chelsea to get a more centrally creative person to work alongside the wingbacks, like maybe Hazard.
But it isn’t just the wingbacks. Chelsea have a history of getting hit or miss strikers. This season we have struggled with strikers finding consistency, which makes it hard to score goals despite how many chances we create. Chelsea needs their strikers to be more consistent, like Diego Costa.

@Hazardinho Don’t tell me Chelsea don’t create chances. They do create chances. Their forwards are just not finishing them. How many chances does Madrid need to score when they have Benzema. Tuchel system is not the problem. There are weak players in the system. Azpilicueta can’t hold a wingback position. Marcos Alonso is great going forward but more often than not unreliable going back. I can go on about the weakness in the squad depth in different positions especially wingback which is imperative to the 3-4-3 formation. I’m not gonna speculate. If I can see the issues from watching them on TV, I believe Tuchel knows what to do. Next season is going to be defining for him if he gets the players he wants.

It’s quite obvious, it’s the evolution of total football.
The modern game requires so much pace and movement, it’s squeezed out the goal scoring specialists.

I remember there was an era in the 1990s where there was a lack of wide forwards with there being central strikers and dribbling wingers. Modern Attacking half are good at getting into the box to score but they are not good at breaking down defences with a through ball.

Very few wingers today are true dribblers they are more like wide forwards that can run with the ball but in terms of speed and pace. They need balls to be played in behind the defence. An example of that would be somebody like Kylian Mbappé who is a skillful player but is not trying to run dribbles through a defence.
A player like Messi would have been able to play that winger role if he desired as he was good at dribbling but he was so good overall that he got used in another capacity.
