Used to watch the Derby on TV with my Mum every year when I was growing up. One year she had forgotten the date and we were in a K-Mart when she suddenly remembered. We raced to the area in the store where they sold televisions, made ourselves comfy right on the floor and watched the run for the roses. My Mum died in 1994 at the age of 86, but she's with me every year when the Derby is run as I remember my childhood watching it with her.

Nothing satisfies me more, than hearing “My Old Kentucky Home”, when the Kentucky Derby comes in place, each year.
Horse racing has been one of the popular pastimes in my family, with thanks to my dad, who once worked in the old, and now permantly closed, Arlington Park Racecourse (which was owned by Churchill Downs), in Arlington Heights, IL.
He goes back a long way, with that race track, and I’ve been very thankful, to have been part of that classic history, that was once unfolded, when their doors were still open, there.
Since I was a little girl I wanted to go see The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. So finally when I retire I get to go see my life long dream ! I can’t wait ! ( I’ve only been waiting over 45 years ! )

Thank the Lord I am a Kentuckian! No other place I would rather live. Born, raised and always lived in The Motherland that is Kentucky!

If you can find a copy, read the biography of James Winfield. Hecwon the derby 2 years in a row. Then they banned black jockeys.
I lived in Lexington-Fayette. My paternal side lived in Versailles-Woodford. To write that I love The Bluegrass Stakes and The Derby is an understatement. ❤

Thoroughbreds love to run. It’s what they do without training. Cruelty and/or performance enhancing drugs is terrible. But, it’s against the law. Go visit a Fayette and/or Woodford County, Kentucky, horse farm to see how most Derby horses really live. They are pampered like children and treated like family pets.

Horse racing is extremely cruel.

It has been cruel for 150 years, but yet this all started in the late 19th century, and despite our feelings with how cruel it is, it continues to be an ongoing “fastest 2min. in sports” tradition.
- horse racing can definitely be cruel but not always. It's also exciting and fascinating when done well.

NPR did a segment about how horse racing is just as bad as dog fighting. But horse racing is for the affluent, and dog fighting is associated with criminals. Class warfare.

No longer watch-horses are drugged and dying. Horse racing should be stopped.
Would love to here more as to why African Americans were pioneers in this sport and now no longer.
