Someone still has to explain to me how the Coastal Mountains, the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia, St. Lucia in the Caribbean, Majorca in Spain, all of Hawaii.... don't count as "seaside mountains." BC has a literal mountain range called "The Coastal Mountain Range". Why has no one on the cast/crew seen a picture of mountains directly next to the ocean?? Are we the crazy ones??? What's going on here????

I'll never forget the first time I watched this--it's one of the most magical episodes of anything ever made. You can see in Sam's smile that he knows he's made a playground for some of the sharpest and most creative people anywhere in entertainment.

2:52 jess forgetting that the town is called mountport and zach correcting her moments later, not once but twice in this episode, while trying to remain on melody is equal parts hilarious and impressive
But he didn't even correct her
He acknowledged that she said the right name and they all shorten it cuz they're busy which is even more awesome 🤣
But the second time when she called it "Mount Town" was hilarious
I feel like she chose "mountain port" to stick with the melody.
Something I've noticed in episodes of Play it by Ear is that Zach is really good at directing the music and maintaining continuity.

Yathe baseball aong was awesome and she messes up the name but they all play it off so nicely like it was scripted! Real talent these guys
Mountport's sudden lack of fish really tipped the scales for me moving there in order to start a new life of non-fishy newspaper distribution.
Be careful about the tuna fish there. It's really good, but just a bit will do ya

My personal headcanon is that the geological phenomenon of a mountain/seaside town is some kind of deep, dark secret, and Timothy's "crime" is just that he reveals it to strangers.
I thought it could be where there's a mountain range that's all squished together, and the sea is on the other side, cresting the top of the mountains (Similar to a cliff with water or dam).
The city of Valparaiso in chile is pretty much a mountain/seaside town
Vancouver is pretty much a mountain port town.

Literally outside my front door is the mountains and I'm also 15 minutes from the ocean in Vancouver. That's just how we live.

Seriously. It’s such a typically “musical” thing to happen and they came up with it on the fly. Just amazing.
It is genuinely insane that these people are creative enough to come up with thus sort of thing on the spot. Bravo. this deserves an award from the improv community

I live in Maine and can confirm there are small gossipy towns where there are foggy mountains next to the sea, overfishing is a problem, and there are lots of wealthy people on sailboats. Y'all should come to Maine and see how the mountains stretch into the sea⛵ Art imitating life.

This is all improvised isn't it? The amount of talent required, both musical and comical, to improvise all of that is absolutely insane. Hats off!
All improvised except Sam's prompts obviously. They might not have even known this episode's game would involve singing.
@@go-away-5555 They definitely knew the game would involve singing, two of them have a podcast (Off Book, IIRC?) that is basically the same concept, an improv musical. Doesn't make this any less incredible to watch, though.

When I first saw this I was not ready for how amazing it was and I love that Sam's reaction was the same. He was not prepared for the magic in a bottle he was catching with that talented group of 3 improve singers and 1 improve pianist

My favourite part is always when it cuts back to Scott and you see how much joy he has in seeing what the contestants are doing with his music.

I just watched this randomly after missing CH videos for months and this is one of the funniest things I've seen in years.
Broadway Composers work for years on their craft but Zach and Jess can just crap these out seemingly whenever and frankly they're better than the majority of songs I've heard on broadway.
Man I do not like this type of comment. What they did in this episode is amazing! And it also is in no way comparable to writing and producing a Broadway musical. The comparison is insulting to the improvers, the Broadway composers, and everybody you expect to accept this as a reasonable comparison.
You would love their podcast then! It’s called Off Book and they do exactly this every episode.

1) they didn’t say this was comparable to writing and producing the entirety of a whole broadway musical.
2) they just expressed they liked how this song sounded more than most broadway songs which is a perfectly valid opinion to have
3) this was not presented as a reasonable comparison, just a tongue and cheek praise of the skills as play during this song. In that context it’s very reasonable, unlike the unreasonable reaction you’re having with this unsolicited hyper defensive counter to a comment not intended to be a completely serious comparison of two obviously different mediums.

I legit just watched the episode on Dropout last night. This is one of my favorite game show concepts and I'm already enjoying Season 5 of Game Changer. I loved Season 1 of Play it By Ear and I'm sure I'm not the only one looking forward to a potential season 2.
If you need a fix in the meantime before season 2 (manifesting) - check out Off Book, zach and jess’ improvised musical podcast. They have various guests like on play it by ear and it’s great. The only difference is there are no prompts / structure they just start with a conversation and go from there

This whole episode was AMAZING. Zach is a musical theater genius, he knew all the spots to layer different vocals.
I just watched this episode on Dropout and I had to see if people were talking about it because oh my god!! So good!! They are so incredibly talented. Zach was incredible at coming up with the lore and dropping in hints and new characters. He really shaped the story and made it go forward. So impressive.
my favorite game changer episode so far!!! everyone in the comments is commending the singers, which is absolutely necessary, but we also NEED to appreciate the pianist scott passarella!!!! the way that he picks up on what the others are doing and leads into it perfectly is just amazing !!! an example is 2:50 in this video but there’s a lot of other examples in the other songs

I’m not going to lie, I cried tears of joy when I watched this episode because of how spontaneously cohesive, hilarious, beautiful, full circle and just MAGICAL this form of improv is. It’s the purest, most layered and most impressive genre of improv you can possibly get. Can’t get enough of it
The fish coincidence foretold magic and then the actual product exceeded all possible expectations. This episode is amazingly good.

One of the most iconic Game Changer episodes, well warranted in helping inspire my favorite of the new Dropout shows. Me and my friends have watched this episode multiple times.

That climax number when they take down the tower and different chords mix together is so magical it gets me shivering every time I watch it! I still cannot believe they just came up with that on spot, that was truly magical. Honestly half of the reason I keep the subscription for dropout is that I can watch this episode over and over again 😅😅😅

Everything about this is amazing, and I have to find out how to watch more of this! But I just had to come by and say I literally live in a little mountain and seaside town in New Zealand, lol. It's called New Plymouth, and it's awesome. The mountain (Taranaki) is about a 15-20 minute drive from the ocean, but the remains of a past mountain (Paritutu), where the volcanic hotspot has moved from, along the plate in the past, is literally on the beach. You can surf, skate, and snowboard in one day 🙌🏽
this was an absolute delight to watch for the first time, my jaw was hanging open from 2:35 in this video to the end of the episode and also reignited my love for musical theater in a good several years again. i binged all of play it by ear right after (+ off book on youtube, which is zach and jess's other improv'd musical on stage) trying to chase the same high i felt watching this, and while they were amazing, nothing hit quite as much as welcome to mountport. outstanding performance.

I watched the full episode for the first time a couple of days ago and I'm still absolutely stunned by how talented everyone is, Scott & the contestants listening to each other and working together to make literal magic. The callbacks & revisiting old themes were phenomenal. I couldn't believe it when I finished the episode and saw it was only 30mins long, cause it really felt like I sat through a full on musical.
