    My aunt is at :55 sec. She got one of those for my cousin and still has it in the box, she got punched in the face and almost mugged like 5 minutes after getting the doll and wouldn't let my cousin open it because since she got beat up over a doll she made sure that she kept it to remind what her mom had to go thru to make her daughter happy.

    My parents both worked at Babyland for Xavier Roberts when all this started. They told me wild stories about how crazy people got over these babies. Our house was overrun with Cabbbage Patch dolls when I was a kid.

    Before Christmas 1983 in NJ, my mom shopped at Caldor department store in Willingboro NJ on Route 130. She witnessed several people trying to buy Cabbage Patch Kids. There was shoving, but no serious violence. However, some guy stole a hair dryer that was in her cart and they got in a verbal argument. She threatened to get the store manager and got her hair dryer back. How bizarre! If she had a Cabbage Patch Doll in her cart, forget it! She would have had to fight off tons of desperate parents and most likely get injured. Those dolls were not worth the violence.

    Thank God I wasn't interested in Cabbage Patch kids! I was 11 and too old for these. And I was too interested in Atari games, die-cast cars, scratch-and-Sniff stickers, and Star Wars toys in 1983, so these were on my Christmas list.

  • @sclogse1
    @sclogse1 Před 5 lety +10

    It never occurred to me to ask my parents for anything. Even though they were upwardly mobile middle class people, it never dawned on me that they would get something just because I wanted it. They just weren't the type. And when I'm around some Christmas where the kids just tear into packages, instead of waiting their turn for each one, I find it as bizarre as this video. I asked a Santa for a little toy soldier when I was around five. Since I never mentioned it to my folks, guess what?

My parents wanted on for my sister. NOTE: They weren't at this store when this happened, I think the way they got it was through a family members friend. We lived in NJ and my parents drove 4+ hours to pick it up from Wilkes-Barre.

    Did this take place during the post-Thanksgiving Day sales? Ironic. So much for people expressing goodwill, thinking of others, and celebrating gratitude for what they have.
    Before I'm accused of making fun of Americans, similar behavior has happened in my country.
    The biggest shopping day of the year is around December 26-27. This is when stores have their post-Christmas stocktake sales. In 1992, way before the days of online shopping and 'click and collect', people would wait outside the store in large numbers for the store to open. They would then dash madly to buy the item that they wanted. Some got violent. The crowds got out of hand, even with security guards to control them. One shopper even lost some fingers in a doorway. People got trampled on.

    They forgot to mention the "adoption papers", which was why every Yuppie in the nation had to have one, so their own adopted kids would feel "accepted". I am not making this up either, I knew a lot of them back then and this was their parental psychology. The economy was very good at the time, and those people had no shame. Money and material items were what mattered most to them! By the way, these are the same baby-boomers that are now the lawmakers, judges, and politicians that have put this country in the social and economic toilet, just in case your wondering where they disappeared to.

      @pollysshore2539 Před 5 lety +4

      Aviva Kirsten I don’t think the Build-a-Bear madness was all that mad.
      This was parents clambering over a new toy and there were many fights, attempted muggings, injuries, etc. BaB offered a really good sale and did not anticipate the turn out. Some said there were safety concerns but I don’t think there were actual safety issues. For the most part people waited patiently in line, but stores were not prepared and did not have enough supplies to accommodate all.
