Thank you! I'm in my late 40s, and the past couple years I started having new random pains in the body. I was in "good shape"--running, lifting weights, biking--but it was only after I started doing yoga this year that the pains were relieved. This may sound weird, but now I have a sense of optimism for growing older, that I can combat a lot of problems in my body, using my body. I am not running anymore, so I'm getting a little fluffier, but at the same time I am loving my body more than ever. I would not have predicted it.

If you do yoga (particularly Hatha) for long enough, you will eventually realise that you are not your body, nor your thoughts. The thinking about weight loss will disappear when you become aware of it. Problem solved 🙏🧘😁

"xyz for weight loss" is a fairly horrible piece of clickbait that seems to prey upon people's desire for change and covers every sport and exercise out there. There is rarely the simple, honest, truth that it's diet that rules. It took me a long time to, in small steps, adjust my diet to the point that I'm actually in control and that healthy choices are not a struggle.
I run a lot these days, strength train and do yoga - 8+ hours a week and that still doesn't really allow me to eat everything I want all the time!

I lost 100 pounds during start of Covid. I have maintained a weight smaller than I ever was in high school (I’ll be 36 end of this month) via yoga. I do anywhere from 8-10 yoga classes a week. It can totally keep your body in shape and lose weight depending on calories.

Hormonal imbalance also plays a role in fat loss or gain. I wish people would stop suggesting that calories in and out is all that matters. Cortisol, estrogen and thyroid hormones can play a roll in weight.

I recommend Livinleggings to as many people as I can, and this video is a great example of Olivia's fantastic teaching. The issue of negative body-image rather than a determination to become healthy being of prime importance to so many people is troubling and needs to be addressed. I'm 58 and still teach bouldering every week, while my wife teaches yoga as her job. The most common question to both of us (not only by women) is about losing weight. We have trillions of cells that probably prefer good nutrition, so eat well. Exercise is only one piece of the 'healthier' lifestyle jigsaw - we cannot separate mind and body, and in my opinion, it's vitally important to ENJOY what I do. As Olivia says, if you enjoy your lifestyle changes, you are more likely to continue.

Well said. In my over 20 years of exercise and dieting, diet has the biggest impact on your ability to lose weight. From an exercise perspective, if your only form of exercise is yoga, it's possible, but it's not likely that you will lose weight. I enjoy the benefits of yoga have found strength training and diet to be far more effective for this purpose.

Can I add, that I probably gained a little weight doing yoga through gaining muscle.
Also yoga has made my body far more capable, and therefore I’m happy to do more active stuff like riding a bike, lifting weights, walking the dog further, throwing a frisbee with a mate.
Finally, that was a cool handstand!

So well explained. I thought you were going into "how to lose weight", yet instead you steered correctly into activity and enjoyment. I hate going to the gym but am usually glad that i went. At seventy it takes more time for recovery. The gym also leaves my very tired and I often miss yoga classes because I'm sore and worn out. I do enjoy yoga. It is challenging but a real sense of accomplishment when your mind finds your body. It is quite the unique feeling. Your channel does provide me so much encouragement and enjoyment. Thank you.

Good and diplomatic explanation. Practicing yoga or other sports always has to find its value and motivation in the sport itself to maintain long-term success. Weight loss can never be a main goal, only a byproduct. Otherwise the failure is pre-programmed.

I don't know why yoga ruffles some people's feathers to be honest. Like any physical activity, as mentioned in the video, it is a way to consume energy that we intake. However, there is something about yoga I personally found beneficial that I could not find in other types of sports; a sense of peace.
As an emotional eater, yoga helps me calm down, making eat less to relieve my stress, anxiety, sadness.. Etc. Competitive sports (well, most other types of sports really 😅) especially under the supervision of intense trainers, leave me with a bloated tummy, a sign of stress (yes, for some people, this can happen).
My trainers don't like it when I tell them that yoga is equally important for me as other sports I'm practicing. And they try to dissuade me from practicing yoga with weird comments.
People, try yoga. You might like it; you might not. Either way, that's OK. Different strokes for different folks. The most important thing making your health journey an act of self discovery and self love. Wishing you all the best everyone 😘💐

I am in healthcare and the stress is why I’m out of shape to start with. I’m 49 I wish I had done yoga in my 30’s. I would advise any one here who wants to practice yoga regularly that you might want to incorporate resistance training, at least to start with, if you don't have the upper body strength required to access more advanced poses like crow and wheel. I started with restorative yoga years ago and loved it, but found vinyasa difficult to do because of my lack of upper body strength. As a woman in my forties I also want to do some resistance training regularly to protect against osteoporosis and sarcopenia, although right now I'm focusing on rehab conditioning to heal chronic knee issues. Great video!

It's amazing how the simple and rather obvious concept of energy in/energy out is misunderstood or ignored by so many people. The fat you carry is determined by your lifestyle, not your exercise routine. It's nice to see someone with influence stating that fact in a clear and concise manner for a change. If it helps stop just a handful of people constantly looking for that magic-bullet-quick-fix that doesn't actually exist, then it's worth it.

Yoga made me aware of my food intake. Doing some of the poses with a full stomach was near impossible. It then dominoed into good daily habits, like intermittent fasting. It gave me better posture, that would make me challenge myself. I attest my weightloss to yoga. But it's because I found a greater importance in doing daily yoga than actually taking good care of myself.

I'd just like to add that diet is hugely important beyond calories. Even ignoring all effects of hormones, insulin resistance, and blood sugar spiking, your body will only burn fat when there's no glucose in your blood to burn. Conversely, if it has to get energy from fat or complex carbs, it has to break them down first. Which takes energy.
Also, stress and lack of sleep are often hugely important to fat retention and hormonal balance. To the point of making diet and exercise moot. A meditative practice like yoga can help with stress and sleep quality, and therefore fat loss.

If weight reduction is the goal lot of things comes into play, some will loose weight doing yoga. Some will by doing cardio, weight training, etc. Even a person can loss weight just by doing breathing exercises in certain way. As the weight loss is happening only by exhaling. So it's better to spend sometime with a good teacher and try a couple of things to understand the body and go for it to get better results.
