Punketronic - Planet B

Planet B was inspired by a job I did at work in a Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment recycling plant in St Helens, Merseyside. This place took electronic items and stripped them apart to their core elements for reuse. There were TV’s, Video recorders, Radios, CD players, ipods, microwaves, toasters, fridges, ovens, vacuum cleaners etc. etc. If you can think of it, it was there.
There were 100’s of skips full of this stuff that people had thrown out, and most it was in full working order, but because this stuff is so relatively inexpensive, people were throwing it out rather than giving it away or trying to sell it. They even had the local lads breaking in to nick the stuff out of the skips to sell it! I was told to be careful where I walked around the site, as the locals had a habit of using the staff for target practice with their air rifles. That's maybe a story to tell another time!
It was slightly sobering, and made me think of where this stuff goes when we get rid of it? This facility had just been set up. Prior to this, these items went to landfill and as there are not many of these facilities, a lot of it still does where it will sit for the next million years.
A guy I spoke to there said they had around 50,000 fridges stacked up onsite ready to go through the recycling plant which was running at full capacity and could not keep up with the number of items being delivered.
It was both depressing that we generate so much non disposable waste, and encouraging that we were just starting to get to grips with the problem and recycle it.
Anyway - back to Plant B. Watch it, stream it, download it, dance to it - but above all, listen to the message and start to do something about it!
