How humiliating this much have been for her. Imagine asking Garbo to do a screen test. She was exquisite in 1949 and could have played any part she wanted.
After her last film, "Two-Faced Woman" in 1941, Garbo was offered many ideas for a possible comeback. Of all the offerings, only one film came close to production. In late 1948, Garbo signed a one-movie deal with producer Walter Wanger, for a film version of H. Balzac's famous novel, "La Duchess de Langelais". Wanger wanted to shoot in Italy and James Mason agreed to co-star. Sadly, after many problems, postponements, and finally losing all financiers, the film was dropped. Wanger hoped to start again but in February 1950, Garbo lost interest and returned to New York.
A superstar who hated the limelight. She was never one for marriage and seemed happiest when left with her own company. She was a complete one off which made her such a mysterious woman.
WOW!... I had read about this test, but didn't think I'd ever get to see it. (You can read her lips at one point, whese she says, "Stop it!"...) Thanks for posting... What a woman!
well, i say it is a petty we didn't watch her while she was growing and became more mature... we could see her marvelous face, glance getting older and we could... well, just love it!!!
yes this is from 49 the test was shot in California but the film was to be made in Italy, when she got there the italian press expected a new Garbo and hounded her, she became restless about thee whole situation and the producers, one being walter wanger, backed out and that is the end of the story....even in home film footage I have seen on her she always appears happy and very playful
As per historians, in this year, her Hollywood reign was over. Years prior, no one would dare do a screen test of her. This was of her own choosing to see if she thought she still had "it" - she did, however, she felt otherwise and chose to retire, never to look back with regret
It wasn't a case of Garbo not liking the way she looked in these tests. The film's backers could not raise the money and the project was cancelled. She was hurt, taking it personally, and left Holywood, moving permanently to NewYork City. She was 43 years of age when these tests were made.
I wonder why her old studio MGM, with whom she made all of American films did not step in and help finance this film. After all, her old boss, Louis B. Mayer was still head of MGM when this screen test was made.
@wisdaniel; what it specifically was, was a lighting test to see how Garbo would appear. You must understand this situation; Garbo ha not made a film since Two Faced Woman, and in the subsequent decade, films as well as the leone who made them had changed. Something most people not in the business don't know is that (al)most every woman who is at the 'top,' (a current analogy is Angelina Jolie) are NOT thought of as such by the 'industry' after the age of 40. Regardless of what anyone thinks, that's how it went - and STILL does. An example of a woman knowing this and (financially) 'preparing herself for this, is Sharon Stone, who, even though she 'peaked' (her star power was at its highest), with Fatal Attraction, she then made a slew of terrible pictures (Sliver, anyone?) - JUST for the paycheck. The financing for Themis Garbo picture was from a bunch of investors, and while you or I can look back with hindsight and say 'big deal,' in the immediate time-frame this happened, there were MANY people (David O. Selznick, etc.) who were going to 'bet their career' on this project. The weight of it all became too much, and, sadly - the project collapsed.
What a range of expressions, although many are quite somber. I think that women who play with their hair that much are a bit insecure. She was a tremendous actress.
The music in this video is from the film "Mysterious Lady"." An excellent modern sound track was added, music composed and conducted by Vivek Maddala. In this Garbo film, she plays a glamorous spy who falls in love.
@MiltownPunkette21 - I don't know if you really saw my point, but I'm trying to understand yours. lol I know she died 20 years ago, I'm just saying.. shes immortal to me..
Does anyone know what this screen test was for ? I have read that she was to return to film about this time in a film version of Proust's "Remembrance Of Things Past" Was this in prep. for it ?Would really like to know so if anyone knows what this was for I would appreciate it .
The problem is actresses were taking on grittier roles, that showed them aging. Bette Davis in "All About Eve," and Gloria Swanson in "Sunset Boulevard." Greta Garbo wanted to return to movies, like the ones she was making in the 1930's. The movie she did the screen test for, was never made, and she turned down all other roles. So she never returned back to films. Too bad, because she had the beauty and talent to do so.
Hello, does anyone know if this is the famous screen test Garbo made to make a comeback, but then decided not to because she didn't like the way she looked on screen at this age? IMDB has her last movie listed in 1941, this screen test says 1949. Anyone know the story behind this??
@damienrecords I have read biographies and it turns out that the financiers did not come through with the money for the film they wanted to cast her in. It is too bad that she never made a film after the Two Faced Woman.
I never saw a face more beautiful and more expressive at the same time. I couldn't take my eyes off her for a single second of this clip.
How humiliating this much have been for her. Imagine asking Garbo to do a screen test. She was exquisite in 1949 and could have played any part she wanted.
What a wondrous smile she had! I found myself smiling watching her smile. She radiated beauty!
Amazing what she can convey in a split second. Her face could change into 100 emotions in a couple minutes,
Goddess! No-one has charisma like Garbo had.
43 years old and just as gorgeous as 20 years before !
44.
@@FredricEric Hugh was right. She was born in September (18) in 1905 so she still was 43 on May 1949
@@MidnightTales Mea culpa. Culpa mea.
the music fits perfectly with this video....simply wonderful!!!
She was, is, and will be the GREATEST
I love the way she plays with her hair she's just beautiful she will always be beautiful very special woman will never be another like her
how many expressions in just 2 minutes..----she was really divine......and so was her smile.....
She's stunning, enigmatic, joyful and unbelievably aware.
I don't know what she was being tested for but they lost out.
Admirar seu rosto e rever seus filmes nos dá a sensação de estar no sétimo Céu.....
Enchanting animation is Greta with her hair and face oppose to a photograph. The music I agree is a great touch too.

je suis tout simplement sous le charme et quel sourire..... un pure bonheur de regarder cette vidéo.merci
BEAUTIFUL !!!
The music to this is like something out of the film “ JAWS “....really. My goodness. Couldn’t you have picked something better.
Beautiful Garbo
A superstar who hated the limelight. She was never one for marriage and seemed happiest when left with her own company. She was a complete one off which made her such a mysterious woman.
@wholikescinema I extracted that music from a movie called "The Mysterious Lady" with Greta Garbo.
This music is perfect.....
WOW!... I had read about this test, but didn't think I'd ever get to see it. (You can read her lips at one point, whese she says, "Stop it!"...) Thanks for posting... What a woman!
Oh, how I love this girl !
Sempre bellissima!! Ancora oggi.
To me she looked about her age. But it doesn't matter because her beauty is incomparable.
Who said she died????
She's pretty alive to me in my heart, forever. ♥
it was for La Duchess de Langelais, which was to co-star James Mason. It never was made due to financial and censorship issues in the States.
STUNNING
I love her smile!!!
very facinating and interesting face!🍃🌹
Presque aussi magnétique, magique sue cette chere Marlène Dietrich
I think Greta Garbo in this Screen Test - 25/05/1949 looks gorgeous, she is a magnet to my heart.
Super beautiful for a 45 year old woman! Beautiful in general, i love her so much!
She looks GREAT.
She's stunning. Simply stunning. I love when she smiles and laughs. Just breathtaking
Beautiful, beautiful Garbo!
Now that's screen presence.
brilliant!! Thanks for sharing
Yes, she was still beautiful and when she warmed up all the magic was there.
well, i say it is a petty we didn't watch her while she was growing and became more mature... we could see her marvelous face, glance getting older and we could... well, just love it!!!
Thank you for your response :) It's so amazing!
She's so gorgeous I want to cry.
perfection itself!
Naturally beautiful & glamorous ... easy to understand why she was called, "The most beautiful woman in the world".
And something else.
Something in the eyes. She had a presence no other actress had.
you know, except for the eyes, she and katharine hepburn looked a lot alike
I agree with you. It is indeed a shame that she did not do any films after the Two Faced Woman!
This woman is not human....she's a Goddess. I wouldn't trade her for all the refugees in the world.
She´s face and expression is just... Can words describe it?
swedish people are beautiful. naturally tall and slim and amazing face features, i´m happy i´m swedish :)
When I think about it and see what an icon Garbo has become I am beginning to wonder why the imitatators in showbiz have left Garbo alone????
yes this is from 49 the test was shot in California but the film was to be made in Italy, when she got there the italian press expected a new Garbo and hounded her, she became restless about thee whole situation and the producers, one being walter wanger, backed out and that is the end of the story....even in home film footage I have seen on her she always appears happy and very playful

how could a person be so BEAUTIFUL!!!! the ultimate DIVA!
Meravigliosa attrice! Non per niente soprannominata la "Divina"
beautiful and talented

It was Basic Instinct (1992) with Sharon Stone not Fatal Attraction. That was with Glenn Close but same male costar Michael Douglas.
What a range of expressions, although many are quite somber. I think that women who play with their hair that much are a bit insecure. She was a tremendous actress.
It was a screen test. She was performing for the camera. Playing with her hair was part of that.
Great !

This was filmed by the great James Wong Howe.
Oh ....
her 'appeal' has always eluded us.

@Qonsbg i agree with you there....there's other actresses...then there's Garbo..
What this screen test is for?
Is this a test for the Duchess of Langelais?
Please, what's the music?
Garbo......Ruled!!!!
G.G. resterà sempre una delle donne più belle del mondo.Il suo volto è sempre attuale.
@damienrecords I have read biographies and it turns out that the financiers did not come through with the money for the film they wanted to cast her in. It is too bad that she never made a film after the Two Faced Woman.

She looked like 60 but she was just 44 at that time...
Yes you had at that time whole beautiful women.
thank you.
@archdandy123 No.
She looked tired of hollywood's phoniness.
haha she's so cute ( :
😩
Fuck, she is talking about something and I can't hear it! >.
Чё,чё?(что,что?) Я вас не понял!
@stefan103 wait, are you saying she should have played a man? LOL
What the hell happened? Hollywood had a better, more beautiful actress? Hahaha, no.
OK, that was just dumb. That's a screen test?? You want a real actress, see Bette Davis, Merle Streep, Sissy Spacek, or Kate Winslet.
Only Davis could compare with Garbo. The rest are wannabes.
