Although all 3 screen tests are wonderful, Garbo blooms under William Daniels, by far the best and most beautiful of the Garbo screen tests.

I saw a bit of this on TCM some time ago and just assumed the test was done in 1945-46; Since her stumbling block was she couldn't get distribution for her films, in Europe, due to the war. Does anyone know why they did not screen test her earlier? Perhaps 4 MONTHS after the war ended instead of almost 4 YEARS?

I don't get the fascination with this woman. She was aesthetically beautiful but stiff and unapproachable. I dont think she was that great an actress either. It is nice to find unseen film footage like this where you can see a more natural demeanor.

She was ready and so eager to get in front of the camera once more after eight years. It broke her heart when she was told it would not happen.
To put things in perspective, she was financially fine without doing this film. And she'd turned down multiple projects in her time off the screen, so it's not like she had a desperate desire to act again. Yes, she had been a huge star, but in any industry it's not really realistic to turn down jobs for almost a decade and then think it will all just fall in line again when you decide you're ready. The world moves on without you - it has no choice.
This Devine goddess is mesmerising, a angel from another planet perhaps sent here to enlighten us earthlings to sublime beauty.

When did she become a recluse?
Probably after her last "Hollywood" film in 1941 when she turned 35. MGM tried updating her image by having her play sophisticated twin sisters in a screwball comedy. She wanted a better salary as well. MGM refused, and she retired. There were other issues as well. Foreign actresses like Garbo and Dietrich in 1941 weren't attracting audiences one America entered into the second world war that year. She seemed to be on board for this project in 1949 but I believe the financing fell through.
@@Scorchy666 I've read that before she made her last film, she was asked if she would make two films for her normal fee of $250,000. She agreed to make one for $150,000. MGM came back and asked if she would do two for twice that amount but she wouldn't. Anyway, the film was her only real flop.
