Dubspot Instructor and master finger drummer Justin Aswell takes us through his approach to building the foundations of a track in this first installment of a three-part video tutorial series exploring the creative production and performance possibilities of Native Instruments versatile MASCHINE Groovebox. Justin demonstrates how to slice up drum breaks, assign samples to pads, and create drum pattern variations. He then proceeds to record a bassline using a MIDI keyboard to give his breaks some meaty low-end and some synth keys for added flavor. Justin then tops the track off with a Tribe Called Quest vocal sample he chops up and edits while offering some fundamental music production techniques and sound shaping possibilities using MASCHINE's advanced features.

Thanks Bro. I have been trying how to use this maschine for about 9 months now and out of all of the tutorials I have watched this was the most informative. I really appreciated how you not only told us what you were doing but why. That is the most important information you can teach someone. Soo... thanks again.

As someone who just acquired one of these for my Ableton setup; I'm finding myself more and more impressed with what I can do.
I have a feeling that Battery is going find less and less use as time goes on.
Thanks for this and your other tutorials.

@tasherredenajetic I get you. But i think what dubspot is trying to showcase is how the artist uses the products in their everyday workflow. What we can take out of it is just an adjustment to our own workflow. We might already know all this stuff, but we also always want to do things easier, faster, and comfortably.

its a lot easier if you just chose the sound, press shift and pad mode. that will split the sound over the 16 pads, each will be in a different pitch
by holding down pad mode you can chose the key of the pads also.

Having not used either the Renaissance or the Maschine or Maschine Mikro but having seen the gui and workflow of the software, I'd get a Maschine especially because I have heard many good things about it, it comes with fantastic soundpacks and upgrades, has great effects and gives you NI Massive along with it. The hardware is quality and NI is programming state of the art industry standard software while Akai seems to have missed the turnaround and relied on it's brand name for too long.

You can't "choose" the exact drum or piano sound from an audio file, you do however have some options, you can slice the part that interests you and then pass the sample by some kind of EQ filter, high-passes p.e. are good for getting voices or lead instruments and remove the bass and percussion, this is not an exact science though, you'll have to experiment to get decent results.
Google is your friend : )
