- In this video, I am down in Kent for a canoe bushcraft overnight trip with Andy from Kent Survival. We set out along the River Wantsum, stopping for lunch on the river bank, before finding a suitable spot for our woodland wildcamp. Shelters set up, firewood collected, water purified and fire lit, we settle down to enjoy the evening and cook a dinner of slow roasted haunch of venison with red wine gravy and fried potatoes………and a few beers!
The morning brings with it the sound of birds singing, a delicious mountain man breakfast and quite a bit of rain.
Thanks Andy for inviting me down and showing me a little corner of your county.
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Venison Recipe:
Haunch of venison
500ml red wine
2 tbsp soft brown sugar
2 cloves garlic sliced
6-8 rashers streaky bacon
Oil
Salt and pepper
Using a sharp knife, make deep incisions in the venison and poke garlic slices in. Rub with oil and cook at a high temperature (220 degrees C) for 10-15 mins until it starts to brown. Reduce the heat to low (160 degrees C), pour over the red wine, sprinkle the sugar over and lay the back rashers on top. Cook slowly for about 2 hours. Season and enjoy with cubed fried spuds and beer!

Thanks again for getting me on track for Sweden mate, was great little overnighter and paddle! (and as always lots of great food haha)
My absolute pleasure mate as always!
You did really well mate, picked up that old Dutch rudder quickly! 😉 I’m still picking bramble thorns out of my hands!!! 😂 can’t wait for your vid! 😁
This video has several humorous moments, but the hat-grabbing vine, beginning at 9:02, takes the cake. It is a hilarious triumph of plant over man.
I now need to find Andy's version of this overnight trip. The both of you are such a comedic team to watch when traveling together. Of course the cooking is always a treat, but my favorite part of this video was the branches taking your hat. The two of you always offer so much to learn in your videos. Keep up the great work creating and I look forward to binge watching more videos of you like I have Kent Survival.
Recently discovered you and Andy’s channels. I’m so glad I did. I usually learn something and it’s very peaceful. You guys are hilarious together keep up the good work I know this video is old but still wanted to comment
I'm only about a quarter of the way through this video and I've laughed so many times. Love seeing you guys together. Thank you both. I'm smiling. :D
Fantastic trip, and always great to see you to do a collaboration video. The chemistry and the banter you two have is brilliant. ⛺🛶
Yes indeed - you took the words out of my mouth. :D
Thanks mate! 😁
Nothing better than a nights fire, good friends, good food. A warm sleep.
Love seeing you two together! That bit where your hat got snagged? Priceless! 😂
Hahaha - it was just chance that I was recording at the time! 😂
@@simonablokeinthewoods haha! Don't worry, Andy is in charged of spooning! 😂 😂 😂
Canoeing and hammock camping.......can't think of a better combination. :)
Thank you , Simon .
🐺 Loupis Canis .
I've only just found your and Kent Survival's channels, and I can't stop watching your hat getting taken by the tree branch 😂
Beer from Hazey and cooking like John and Tyson what a splendid evening.
Really enjoyed looking back at you and Andys exploits. You two fellas always eat and drink well when you get together.. More! More!!!
These two are like aahh where is the reat of the river?😂
Paddling, camping and eating delicious food with a good friend, nothing better! Thanks for sharing!
Did anyone else happen to notice the large phallic object that’s drawn on the can of Haze around 21:30 in marker?!? Either Andy or Northern Monk have been busy with the Sharpie!!! Simon certainly seems oblivious to it!!! 🤣
You two are just a fun time to watch and learn from. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Thank you.
I really love your canoe and camp videos.
Not Really late to the party on this one Simon I’m just going over some of your old Trips and loving it.
This was a keeper for sure.👍🥾⛺️
What a great time you two have, perfect friendship and a pleasure of mine to watch!
I love it when these two work together. 👍🏼
That beer has some interesting artistic designs.
The 1 of 7 Limited blend has lots of saffron and coriander among other goodies.
Very nice it was too! Thanks mate!!
Interesting! Raised on Tabasco Sauce myself. Excellent for our traditional scalloped oysters for the holidays. Been trying others now. Fun experimenting!
At first I thought that Andy didn;t know how to paddle a canoe ... THEN I realized he was HUNGRY and checking the banks for a place to stop for lunch! Nice video, thanks for sharing, and watch the low spots to protect cameras, and the occasional hat. LOL
This is the right way to bushcraft. Bring venison, bollocks to foraging hahahaha
The food was phenominal looking on this one, and that wooden canoe is stunning
Tunnel and bridge distraction very fun trip , very nice canoe .
Bet you couldn't get that tree to steal your hat again if you tried. Nice little trek there. The tunnel gives me the Willie's though.
Excellent, well done Simon and Andy for entertaining me.
You two are a good team. Peaceful to watch, thank you both.
We don't have cheese in tubes much in the States. Remember them in Scandinavia. Wish I was watching you guys when I was in theater doing British accent. Nuance, not over the top. Surprised by your Canadian style J stroke. Well done. In Minnesota, we weren't allowed to touch paddle to gunwalds. More efficient.
You are a great team! Love watching your vids! Funny and relaxing! Keep them coming!
Andy was doing pretty good until you guys came to the dead end. But looks like you guys had a good time and the food looks fantastic. I enjoyed the trip with you
Love watching you two!!! Keep the video's coming!!!
You might want to do a J stroke tutorial. It amazes me that no one seems to know it.
Ace .......... love your joint videos ......still catching up 😂😂😂
I love how Mr Kent Survival REALLY emphasised how long that venison took to cook, whereas in your vid, it just breezes by... It's easy to tell who was the hungriest... :P
Hahaha! 👍
Deer?! Really? Looked like a rabbit leg to me. LOL I've been binge watching your videos for a few days now. Great stuff!
Well that was 40 minutes well spent. Thank you for a great video. Not only do you make the bushcraft look so easy, you also find the time to put in some great video work so we get to share the experience with you!
What great trip, even with the rain. You and Andy are both terrific cooks and it is fun to watch you create your delicious meals. That wooden canoe is gorgeous! Your Swedish trip is going to be fun to watch - worth waiting for. Good for Andy for learning so quickly - but I'm not surprised.
A fantastic video and a great collaboration with Andy! That venison sure did look delicious and so did breakfast 😋 too. 👍
Hi Simon. That trip looked excellent. I can't believe you let Andy use your canoe!!!!! Superb meal cooked by both of you which looked delicious. I'll keep a look out for Andy's version of events!!!! Thanks for bringing us along. ATB
Cheers Mike - hopefully Andy’s will be up next week! 😁
Getting into my favorite season for camping videos. I've heard the UK is usually just wet and miserable this time of year, but it's always a treat to see people make a cozy time of it regardless. Thanks for making the videos!
It is often wet here, that’s true, but winter is a lovely time of year to camp. 👍
@@simonablokeinthewoods hope you 2 are on good terms id live to see yall and Lundy bushcraft do a camp one time but its cool to see you 2 camp together 😃
Love it. Am impressed with Andy’s humiliation! There was me thinking Andy was excellent at everything. By the end of this video I’m sure he will be. Inspirational as ever, can’t wait to get out camping myself (I don’t do winter camping!)
He’s got it cracked! 😁🛶
Andy has a very nice canoe.
Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for bringing us along on your adventures. Whole family watches them now.
My pleasure Matt (and the family!) glad you joined us! 😁
Fantastic Simon! I think I enjoyed this more than anything you've done. Just two buddies laughing and having a good time. Life is good! The dutch oven reminds me of our elk camp meals. Be safe! Roger--Colorado.
Thanks Roger! 👍😁
Great video and the venison looks yum yum. Looking forward to Andy’s video.
What's great about this video is that you didn't edit any of those moments out.
That was so fun to watch! You guys cracked me up! And you have some crazy rivers over there! Those bridges you went under were pretty cool too. They look really old. Thanks for taking us along. :-D
Thanks Sarah!
Looked a fantastic trip. Thanks for taking us along. Really cool video and nicely shot and edited👍
Hi Simon, Just found your channel, have really enjoyed your videos. It's interesting to see new kit I've never seen before. You inspire. Looking forward to more from you.
Thanks Will! 👍😁
Another great video Simon. The food looked great even though you had to wait a long time for the venison to cook. Glad Andy got the hang of solo canoeing...it will help in Sweden.
Love this video! Two of my favourite adventurers/bush crafters/out door chefs.
Big hello from Sydney Australia 👋
Awesome video Simon & Andy. One of the best so far. Looks like you had a fairly ideal weekend.
Arthur Brown reference!!! Fantastic!!!
Great episode! A fun adventure.
Looks like you had a good time with Andy, you both work well together, I anticipate an epic trip to the swede land. all the best!!
Wonderful adventure 😊 Andy should bring out a canoeing series 😂👍🏻 🛶 Lovely to watch guys, looked like you had fun
Awsome watching
I love this paddle overnight trips. Thanks, Simon and Andy. Sweden will be awesome.🤩
As I remember the Wantsum is the only stretch of water that keeps Thanet an 'Isle'! Great video as usual and great food too! Nice to see the Kent/Norfolk combo going well! Looking forward to the next one!
Great overniter guys!
Awesome meals....I used a DD Travel Hammock and 3X3 meter tarp on a three week paddle down the Yellowstone river years ago...they make great gear...hang in there Andy, the J Stroke will become a natural motor skill after awhile...awesome video Simon...as always...woods
Thanks Woods! He did well didn’t he, he was paddling nice and straight by the end - a bit of fine tuning here and there, but I’d say he’s got it ‘licked’ 👍
I thought that was your music to your channel Andy. I thought oh no somebody else has his music too. I watched Simon on his last video with his dog Maggie when he went kayaking in a remote area. Nice to see the both of you. Stay strong and stay safe.
It is Andy’s theme music, a little joke as we were together on this paddle. 👍
Looked like a fun and relaxed trip, thanks for taking us along but... You've always come across as a decent bloke but lending out that canoe!?!? A proper gent, and a lucky guest Andy is :-) That said, I guess you could always make another one... Eventually...
Thanks for taking us along. Chris.
Hxhaha - yes, trust! He did really well! 😂
I've only done a little canoeing , But would not some type of leash on the handle of the paddle be useful . Maybe a short one attached to the wrist. Of course a small emergency backup paddle might be in order for longer trips .Thanks for the VIDS guys. I'll catch you both on the next one. Which i have a nice back log to enjoy.
Simon, great to see you back. I can't wait for you all big trip. missed you immensely with your great character and excellent cooking... ATB Von
Cheers Von! Big trip coming soon mate! 🇸🇪🛶
Excited and can hardly wait...ATB Mate
Looked like a fantastic trip! Thanks for sharing it.
Great video Simon! I agree with David Huxtable, probably the "worst pre preparation for Sweden I've ever seen". Seriously you, particularly Andy, will be in big trouble on a windy lake with waves. I hope you will be going in small streams like this one. Lakes are an entirely different animal and you need experience and skill to handle the wind and waves. Tell Andy to hold the handle of the paddle from the top like you do and take a longer, stronger stroke. Sweden lakes will probably be extremely cold this time of year - not a good time to capsize. Please be careful!
Thanks Rachel. I have some lake paddling experience, but Andy hasn’t - this the practice paddle to at least give him a chance to use the J stroke. We picked it up quickly and by the second day was controlling the boat well - a different kettle of fish on an open lake in the wind, I know, but it’s a start!
We’re not going into this blindly, fully aware of the risks and hazards and we will assess our situation continuously and adjust our plans accordingly. He’ll be fine, and if the wind picks up, we’ll head for shore, we may even opt for one canoe, paddling tandem as yet, but we’d both prefer solo.
Great video Simon good to see Andy with you, fantastic grub as well, you where in a area I know really well, you camped about 3 miles from where I live across the fields, you both are my favourite CZcams bushcrafters , really enjoyed this one , thanks for sharing 👍
If we’d known, we’d have given you a shout! 😁
You let a man who couldn't paddle straight pilot your pride and joy?
Mighty generous of you to let Andy paddle your canoe. Whew, Simon, man, shaking my head, heh, heh... Texas.
I knew he’d be fine! That canoe is tougher than it looks! 😂😁👍
I've just watched Andy's video of this adventure (In alphabetical order of course!) There's not much more that I can add so I'll say it in one word. AWESOME!
Really looking forward to your Sweden trip Simon. As always mate, Take care, Steve.👍👍🍺🍺🛶🛶
That looked like an awesome adventure. It has been a long time since I have used a canoe. Used to go on the Little Miami River lot when I was younger. Thanks for sharing another great video!
Another Great video sir.
Top video Simon. Looked like you had a great time...eyes looked a bit glazed after your beers!
Hahaha - it’s Hazys fault! 😂
That's Mr Haze's fault 😄😄 . Yet it is a Awesome beer 🍺 😋
You guys are leading me into bad ways, not content with the diced potatoes in beef suet, I am now sticking hot sauce on my eggs in the morning.....fantastic! I will have to try some of those PCF ones. Great video guys, looks like you had a marvellous time despite the bit of rain.
Hahaha - sorry about that mate! It’s normally Spam when is two get together!!! 😂
Great opening guitar
Great video guys, looked thoroughly enjoyable. Amazing food.
I'm not sure there's going to much there but dynamite fishing might be worth a try.
both an inspiration for me to get out camping again.
Always great to see you two lads out together. Looking forward to seeing your holiday.👍🏻
Great video and an awesome thing to do to lend him your canoe.
Have a nice day & Greetings,, Kitty.
great video you should cooking venison on the edge of the fire and eat as its cooked
its nicest that way in my opinion
River? its a ditch..! lol To filter water a bit, a pair old stockings works also, ehhhh...not mine..! lol When you first cook the potato's for 80%, is easy when you have a lot of time, and then bake them, they taste way better, only a tip. Andy was lucky, he did not have to use his scuba gear. lol. Great trip, Regards, Tony.
Cheers Tony! Not my stockings either!!! Great tips! 😁
My two favorite channels collaborating again! So tell us what we all what to know, who was the big spoon and who was the little one? 😂. That dinner and breakfast looked divine! Definitely going to try that this Sunday. Great video as always Simon 👍
😂😂😂 Now that would be telling!! Cheers mate!
This guy eats better camping than I do at home hahahahaha
I eat better while camping than I do at home too! My wife is a vegetarian!! 😂
Well done
Well I hope you guys stay friendly. I just watched part one of your Sweden trip, and I hope to see you fellas do more together in the future
