Bushcraft Canoe Trip in Sweden, Part Two. Illness in Camp.

- In this video series, Andy (Kent Survival) and I head off to the Swedish Wilderness for a five day canoeing and bushcraft adventure inspired by Dave Bliss’ book ‘Paddles and Polar Bread’. Paddling along the massive lake Stora Le, we experience all the weather Sweden can throw at us, from glorious sunshine, to snow and strong winds whipping the lake up into a raging turmoil of waves and spray. We take all our equipment and food with us in our aluminium Linder canoes and camp in Dano huts or wild camp along the way.
This video is episode two, an unexpected day of remaining in camp while Andy recovered from illness. After a hearty breakfast of pancakes and syrup, I take the opportunity to explore further up the shoreline of the lake and battle with strong cross winds and rain to cross over the lake to check out some cliffs on the other side. In this episode, I also go through my clothing load out for the trip.
I hope you enjoy the video and please tune in for the next episode.
Thanks for watching!

Was that me snoring!!?? hahaha, good to see the day I missed mate, thanks, and thanks for being a caring nurse :p
Oh Andy, so sorry you took ill on your vacation!
Hey buddy, that looked grim. What do you think caused it? 🤔
Think u had flu.
Yes. If I wasn't you, there was a bear still hibernating under the dano.
Hahaha - I had to leave that in - just to prove I wasn’t the only one snoring in camp!! 😂
You with that hood on reminds me of Bruce Willis in Unbreakable. That doesn't mean you need to be an everyday hero or anything ...but, an everday hero stands by his friends when the chips are down. Kudos.
The amount of maple syrup you use is obscene. Keep up the awesome content.👍
This is so late to the party but I am playing catchup since finding this wonderful channel. Poor Andy! Nothing more miserable than being sick when you are away from all the comforts of home!
My worst nightmare getting ill while away. Just makes it more interesting I guess.
Andy so sweet...I wish to have good buddy like Simon for doing outdoor..anyway both of u are good matching.. much love from Malaysia
Love that purple sweater!
Andy lumbering through the woods with a bellyache is how the legend of Sasquatch spread to Sweden 😎
😂😂😂😂😂!!!
Nice to see you in my old huntinggrounds, i was working as a Dano Ranger for 4-5 years taking care of all campsites to bring wood and digged holes for the toilets. It was the best job i ever had and still are But i had a kid and the pay was not that Good. But its fun to see you there doing a report of the area. I Hope it can bring some english outdoorsmen to the area and not only danish and germans. Respect the nature and it Will respect and provide for you. Love your channel so keep on doing What your doing. 👍 most respectfully Mike from Sweden 🇸🇪
You two blokes are a great combination! Entertaining and educational! Nothing worse then feeling poorly on camp!
Poor Andy! He looked very, very bad ! You are a good caring friend! Wait for part 3 :))
Many thanks for explaining your kit, it's a big help !
I love Crocs! ❤
For future reference, a nice strong tea made from scratch or pine needles would help him feel better. Adding the Willow bark to the tea would bring down his fever too.
Willow is what aspirin was originally derived from.
Don't underestimate the power of plants as medicine. Many, if not most, of the medications we get from the pharmacy came from plants.
I think we would all benefit from using more natural remedies that can be found around us - didn’t know about the fever reducing properties of willow bark - thank you!
Hot damn a double header! Just knew it was going to be a great day! Thanks so much Simon. You and Andy are the new dynamic duo
Not that nice being sick when you can’t curl up in your own bed. Poor Andy. :( At least you made the most of the down day. I’m still so jealous of you both. What an amazing trip.
Hey Simon!
I'm a fairly new sub still watching some of your older videos... I don't know you personally but you seem like a absolute GENUINE guy man! And awesome friend! If I was out camping and got sick I'd definitely like to be with a friend like you man! Thanks for all the DIY awesome videos... Specially the older videos of you and your son spending time! It's a beautiful thing Simon! Thanks again and I look forward to the next video with you and Andy!
Nothing worse than getting crook in the woods. I also had a bad infection 2 weeks ago which completely ruined a hammock camp I was on. Glad to see Andy in the Canoe at the end! Another good video from SABITW, sometimes it isn’t all good in the woods...
You're spot-on with mittens Simon. Having your fingers all together means they share their warmth & get colder at a much slower rate than isolated fingers in gloves. My wife struggles with cold hands so I made her get some leather-palmed mittens for Japan's winter, they keep her hands warm & the leather palms mean added grip & wear/tear resistance. Ever see a polar explorer wearing gloves? Nope. They always have mittens😎👍
I can’t wear gloves, I’ve never found a pair that actually keep my hands warm - I’ll use them for moving pots around in the fire etc or rough work to protect my hands, but for warmth - mitts every time! 👍
Simon, greetings from Massachusetts in New England. I thoroughly enjoy your videos of paddling, hiking, camping, baking bread and so forth. It makes me a little anxious when I see you paddling off with only a single paddle in hand. We have a saying that defines extreme bad luck: "Up s--- creek without a paddle." Here we always carry an extra paddle in case one gets dropped or broken. I wouldn't like to think of you out in the middle of Stora Le in a gale without a paddle.
I always paddle with a spare, however, in Sweden the canoe hire only included one per person - glad I wasn’t alone, just in case!
It's a shame Andy was ill but you made the most of the situation and still got yourself out in the canoe another great video looking forward to part three 😁👍
sorry I cannot stay to watch the whole thing I have got to get to work now I shall watch this when I get home have yourself an awesome day
Great video Simon. Glad you got to make the most of your solitary day. Hope Andy feels much better so tomorrow will be a wonderful day! Looking forward to part 3!
Great video Simon, interesting going through your kit, you was a good mate to Andy, beautiful scenery look forward to the rest of the trip thanks 👍
Thanks u two. Love the vids.
Great vid Simon, poor Andy he looked like he had drunk one of those blue barrels full of beer.Glad everything picks up in the end and look forward to seeing the next part.
Excellent video Simon what a beautiful lake cant wait till the next video thanks a lot !
Great part two .. Glad to see Andy made a recovery ... looking forward to next episode 👍👍

Great video Simon 👍. Also great to see that your , so concerned about Andy's well being. Awesome 👍
Absolutely great video Simon my friend!!! Just love seeing your videos from your area and other places in the world as well! Thanks and God Bless!
love the videos mate👍
I’ve watched Andy’s version of your Sweden trip and it’s nice to see yours. You’re a good friend, Simon.
Great video Simon, really enjoying this adventure.
Brilliant video you and Andy had a great time in Sweden nice one
I enjoy this series. I like watching your video and then watching Andys on his channel. Thank you for sharing. Keep ‘em coming!
Very nice video and as they say, it happens. Andy looks much better now and the trip seems to be progressing nicely. I hope your trip is very enjoyable and the videos are great. Cheers
Great video, bought back so many memories of my own trip, real shame Andy was ill. Stunning scenery and time well spent on the water. Perfect.
Really enjoying these films, just great!
Oh no poor Andy! Glad you could still enjoy the day while giving Andy a chance to get better. Sharing what you bring in a trip like this is very helpful. I found myself taking notes while watching :-)
Those suryp bottles brings on the nostalgia. Way back when plastic bottles wasn't a thing like today, basically every swedish kid had one as a designated bottle for lemonade on field days and what not.
I love that! Perfect recycling! 👍😁
yeah just watched andys
loving this was just going to bed
its 3.30 in the morning heer
but gotta watch
thank you both again
You're a good friend to take care of Andy while he was sick. I've been looking forward to these Sweden videos. Beautiful!
Enjoyed the episode and sorry to hear that Andy not feeling well, hope he recovers and you can continue on. Loved the pancakes you cooked for b'fast.
Dude you did a great video for what looked a hard time with Andy being sick 👍🏻
Interesting and enjoyable, great job!
Nice one Simon you held the fort very well, glad I subscribed. Look forward to Pt three of your adventures..

Looks amazing, really thinking of going here later in the summer when those blueberries are ready
LIFE happens, glad u were their to help Andy along!! feel better lad!
Cool! Definitly going here this summer👍🏻
Fantastic video Simon. Looks like you had a good day exploring even without Andy. Well done for looking after Andy. Looking forward to the next instalment. ATB
Nice one guys Good to see Andy perk up. Really nice camp sites
All the best to you both 👍
Great video Simon. Shame Andy was sick, but at least it wasn't anything too serious... Looking forward to the next instalment 😁
Great videos I really enjoy the team ups...see the action from two points of view.
great vid you Simon made the best of an unfortunate happening i hope andy is ok and you both get to continue best of luck 🌲🇨🇦🌲
Looks like you've gotten that J stroke perfected, i'm still working on mine. I'm enjoying your trip, tanks. Sure sorry Andy is sick, it happens and is a reminder to us all to take certain medicines with us when we're out in the wilderness. :)
Very good production Simon.Really great skills.
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! Good on you Simon. Good job.
Great Tour Simon. I have allready seen the first part. Beautyfull country sweden is. Illness or a cold is very bad on hikes. Good path and stay healthy. Alex from the Lower Mountain Range the Eifel.
So, now I keep on watching the video.. (-:
Great, great video!
Despite the drilled plans you´ve showed the equipment (excellent learning as always), the beauty of the adventure and proved that life is to be lived as it presents in the moment.
Top. Loved it!
Well done. Looking forward to going back to watch more videos
Great video Simon pitty about andy being sick as I said on andy's video I'm loving this adventure looking forward to seeing the next part atvb jimmy 😎 😎
Poor Andy.. Your a good friend! :-)
Simon, you're a good guy. Andy's lucky to have a friend such as yourself. #Respect
Sorry to see Andy down and out for the day! Hope you guys managed to move on the next day :)
Absolutely stunning, i hope Andy soon feels better, wonderful and enjoying to watch you on your adventures as always :) thank you
Thanks Georgina!
sorry for Andy--another great Video again.hi from Bavaria. chris
Tough to be on a trip and someone gets sick. You handled that well
Feel better Andy! I really enjoy all this amazing footage Simon.. the trees & river and all the boat camera angles + watery sounds! Also, your pro Bushcraft backpack contents.. despite you leaving out the under garments! Ha thanks for sharing!
Hahaha - got to keep some secrets! Thank you!
Ah, this was over a year ago, I do hope your memories of the adventure are still vivid. We love going to Sweden, and let's say this series doesn't make that any less so :-)
Great video Simon, I feel so sorry for Andy, at least you didn't get it too. I find every big adventure has a curveball at some point.
Looking forward to part 3 👍👍👍
Cheers Skye, it’s those curve balls that turn a trip into an adventure! 😁
@@simonablokeinthewoodswrote " it’s those curve balls that turn a trip into an adventure! 😁" : this is why I love you and your videos!
Great video, this country your traveling in looks very similar to northern Minnesota in the US. Thanks for the video. I am also a hammock camper for about 15 years.
Not good to see Andy so ill. Thank you for the kit breakdown.
Such a Fine Example of how grand it can be to have a friend along when there's an illness or trouble. I'm a 100% Solo Venturer 100% of the time. I experienced life threatening injuries going over 3 water falls in close secession after loosing footing tracking a Bear that I had reason to believe had crossed the River. "Huge Story." I was saved by my dog in isolated country. Without his help I would have never made it up the river embankment. Looking forward to next segment. Thanks Simmon, .. Mike.
Sounds like a very lucky escape!!
Looks beautiful and very much like parts of scotland
The pancakes look really tasty.
loving the trip Simon.. 🤣🤣🤣 at Andy snoring away ...👍👍
Hehehe - I dont think he’s forgiven me for that yet! 😂😴
Didn’t expect that .... nothing worse than being sick on a trip. Sickness itself is bad enough but then the awareness that others are impacted is nearly as bad.
Looks like you eventually got moving though.
Big open water crossings are often best done in the early dawn so I’m not surprised it blew up a bit in the afternoon. Typical day up there.
Keep them coming
I hate to be ill on a trip. Kudos to you for sticking by his side. I came down with strep on a 16 mile, 2 day back packing trip and was left by the party. That was a bad trip, but it just built character. I love to see the canoe trips! The aluminum canoe is load, but great! Thanks for sharing!
They left you? That was nice of them! 🤔 thanks mate!
Nice to see you were a good friend to Andy when he got sick poor Andy I feel for him, when describing your gear did you say I don't want to be a skank lol, proper bear grills :) you did get to have some fun on the river
You and Andy make a fine team of outdoor adventurers: this bit of adversity only adds to the evidence. Andy posted earlier, so I admired his positive outlook and willing to get back into things. Your opening was wonderful videography! The lighting, colors and framing were first rate! I always liked to stay in clean 'Adirondack' lean-tos in Massachusetts and Vermont so the Dano hut looked a fine home with plenty of shelter. Not so much head room but up off the ground and solid walls on three sides. Plus heavy duty roofing. Tall fellows like you look good in Tilley hats...I always looked like a short, fat mushroom. Watch caps suit me well. Truly appreciate the veteran loadout advice!
Thanks James! Yes, those Dano huts are a great thing - wish we had something similar over here! 👍
Rotten luck, relieved Andy perked up next day and the trip continues.
Beautiful! Interesting to see your clothing strategy, well prepared and redundancy. Hope Tour friend will recover and your paddle adventure turns to the bright side! Subscribed 💪🏻👍🏻
Thanks Mattias and thank you for the sub! yes, he made a full recovery! We were on our way the next day.
Awesome! I was hoping you'd get this out before our trip at the weekend. Hopefully pick up some good spots to head for!
Have fun!! 🛶🇸🇪
Another awesome video my Friend Simon, Glad you are having a good time...Poor Andy, having my luck, getting sickly on a lifetime trip. He will pull through, but, probably a little weak...Have a better week my Friends...ATB Von
I feel bad for poor Andy Feeling so sick and I’m sure you felt really bad that he was sick and held up if you guys journey. That was very nice of you to care so much but that’s what friends do right. Love your journey anyway on this video
As for waterproofs : I've used my Fjällräven poncho a lot in the canoe. When you're sitting or kneeling it covers you all over and as it's a very roomy fit with openings at the sides between the press studs it keeps you well aired.
Good video Simon, never let your mates down, that's what I say. I use the buffalo mits and when i was in Sweden in 2006 i had a water bag for the evening and morning needs so that's nice to see your doing the same. I found a bit of antler to dig for the number 2 job 😄 I went I'll with what looks like the same as Andy had. Looking forward to part 3
Great minds!! 😁👍
What a good friend you are. NO harsh words or anything. The sugar in the syrup cristalies when it gets cold. Otherwise its very runny. Thank you for a very good video. Tomas
Simon, you are more than just a Bloke in the Woods! You are a good friend taking care of Andy and making the best of the time you were there. Andy would not have wanted you to sit still around camp. It put a bit of a damper on a couple of days, but we do what we have to do! Not hat you had much of a choice, but good on you!!!
If I ever get sick on a canoe trip I hope I’m with that bloke Simon!😁
Just came over from Andy's channel, what a bummer getting sick! Never good especially on holiday, still he looks like he's on the mend! 🤞🤞
I'm sure that he'll be ok mate, he's a Kentish lad🙂
I reckon when you get home you should edit both of your videos into one. That would be a double epic watch!
As always Simon, take care, Steve. 👍👍
Cheers Steve! He recovered well. 👍
Sorry Andy wasn't well but it happens. Glad it wasn't serious. That looked like corn syrup on your pancakes...yum. Great video...already looking forward to the next one. Wondering also how you liked the aluminum canoe.
What a place for morning coffees, or any part of the day. Poor Andy looked quite bad in the first shot of him.
Nice to see the little preview at the end there seeing Andy up and about. I’ve suffered similarly, hit with flu like symptoms out of no where, one minute fine next moment shivering and unable to get warm. It’s horrible.
Sort of surprised your not fishing unless it’s not the season etc (not a fisherman)
I’m not much of a fisherman tbh, but there are fish in there - Salmon later in the year! 👍
Amen, brother. Mittens over gloves all day long!
You just got your self a new subscriber , great video wish I joined sooner :)
Thank you!! 👍😁
15:23 - I love that the weight concern was about the luggage allowance and not the capability of the canoe or occupant.
