- In this video I will be cooking a festive Christmas roast lunch in the woods over an open fire. Turkey and all the trimmings (well, nearly!) followed by Christmas pud. I share the feast with my dog Maggie, even pulling a Christmas cracker together! I hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching and Happy Christmas/Holiday!!!
Hi Simon! Just was watching some of your older videos and wanted to pop into the comments to let you know that here in Canada we most definitely also have Christmas Crackers, paper hats & all! We're in Northern Ontario and my wife's family is French Canadian - Christmas crackers are a must at every Christmas! Cheers!
Maggie is such a wonderful girl!
I’m drooling watching you take out all the vegetables.
New Year's Eve 2024 coming up today! Should Aulde Acquaintance Be Forgot? Great to see Maggie out with you to enjoy a traditional meal.
I would love to spend Christmas like this. X
Of course YUMMM
There'll be a few home-cooked Christmas dinners that would not have been enjoyed half as much! Happy New Year!!
Yes, that’s true I’m sure! Ours was almost a disaster - 20 minutes before everything was due to come out of the oven on Christmas Day, our oven decided to go bang!! Luckily, there was enough residual heat to finish most things off - the Yorkshire puds (I know - I’m a heathen!) were the only thing that suffered and I finished the gravy with me trusty old Optimus paraffin stove. Phew!! A very happy New Year to you too! Atb, Simon.
This video made me smile. Food looks delish
I hope you have a fantastic Christmas and a wonderful New Year with the best of health and happiness. Your videos are a joy and a real inspiration. Thank you, Simon!
I like watching these camp cookings. Makes me hungry all the time lol
WOW! Simon what an amazing Christmas dinner cooked out in the woods. My mouth was watering throughout and my tummy rumbling. You really should consider entering Masterchef as you take cooking to a totally different level. Whilst on the subject of TV programmes you should take Maggie onto Britain’s Got Talent, she a natural entertainer. Cheers and a very merry Christmas to you and the family. 🎅
Hahaha, thanks Mike! Not sure how my ‘sprouts with a hint of leaf litter’ would go down with the judges, but I thought they were nice (my wife disagrees now they’ve had a chance to digest!!) Happy Christmas to you too mate!
It's a Canadian tradition for the power to go out while everyone cooks their turkey on Christmans day. You don't have to worry about a half cooked bird with this method.
Hi thanks for the nice posting all the best regards Tim
Fun Christmas Dinner and Glad to see MAggie🍁🇨🇦Cheers🍺🍺Edsnature
Love your Christmas video. I didn't see it untill 2 years after you made it but still great. Great dog! She sure is a good companion. Got a good chuckle out of the crappie Christmas crackers and the equally crappier joke. Thanks for another enjoyable video. Still like your homemade saw.
for some reason, you made it look so easy... looks delish
awwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a cute doggo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome meal and the grave is awesome!
I've been following your channel for the last couple of months Simon so I've been catching up on them while still watching your new ones....quite simply there inspiring!

Danny Walker - Cheers Danny! It taste good! Yum!! Happy Christmas!
I believe this was the first video I ever watched of yours before becoming a subscriber. I love Dutch oven cooking. We do it on picnics with my family and at home in the backyard. Safe travels, good eats & God bless 🙏🏼⛺️😎
Excellent meal cooked on an open fire - well done Simon.
Oh yeah ... what a delicous meal in the woods! Eating delicious food outdoors is always something very special. I wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year too. Greetz! Azze
Buschpirat - Thanks Azze, it tasted really good, and Maggie agrees!! I love cooking over the fire. A very Happy Christmas to you too!
Simplicity at its finest.

Awesome Simon! What a Christmas meal! Happy Christmas to you and your family!
Thank you, it was tasty!!! Well worth the effort! Happy Christmas!
Love your dog .
I think that you enjoyed the turkey as much as you dog did, it looked delicious. And a happy Christmas for you to!
You are not wrong there, it was really good!! Thank you! A very Merry Christmas to you too!
Interesting...pigs in a blanket is different in the UK. In the states (as much as we love our bacon) we usually wrap our cocktail sausages with pastry or pie dough.
OMG. Master, I am not worthy of your teachings! Thank you so much & Merry Christmas to you and yours! Remember, when something doesn't work out quite the way you wanted, you haven't failed. You've created another oppurtunity for sucess!
Hahaha - I like that! Cheers mate and Happy Christmas to you too!
Brilliant Simon well done made me very hungry watching it cook happy Christmas all the best.
Thank you Justin, glad you enjoyed it! Happy Christmas to you too!
Looks good Simon making my mouth water mate, have a great Christmas mate and a happy New year.

What fun you and Maggie have. It is delightful to watch your video's. A great meal cooked outdoors with a faithful companion.
Thank you Dan! Good food is a big part of being outdoors for me (and Maggie!) and always tastes better cooked over a fire! Cheers and Atb, Simon
I found your channel looking for an instructional video on tarps.. You make everything look so easy. You are very talented. Truly, You are amazing! I loved hearing about your traditions. Rapping paper...haha! Do you have a website or contact info?
Thats realy looks delicious. Merry Christmas to you and your family."God jul" from Sweden
That was brilliant! Looked fantastically delish!!! I love watching the campfire kitchen segments on all of the camp videos! No reason not to eat well when you are out there!.
Thanks Maggie! It was pretty good - well, maybe with the exception of the roast potatoes!! I always think food tastes better when cooked out in the woods or at camp - maybe something to do with the extra effort needed to cook it, or the woodsmoke maybe? Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers, Simon
I agree. Next time maybe put the potatoes on top of the roast.
I absolutely love these videos. They've kept me going through covid - thank you !
Thanks Karl!

You never disappoint Simon, once again thanks again for a entertaining as well as a instructional video! That worked like a delicious Christmas diner! I don't think you can beat the dutch oven for cooking or baking.Very inspiring! My dutch oven has been in the basement for many years pack away in the camping section all oiled up and ready to go, i think it will be coming out on my first trip to the woods coming up soon. Cheers Mate, your likable personality and positive attitude towards all you do make you a favorite among my CZcams channels! Wish you all the best!
Thank you, really appreciate your kind words mate!
Hope your Dutch oven delivers some tasty treats on your upcoming outing!

That was absolutely interesting to watch I have never known to have turkey for a Christmas dinner over here in the US we always have ham instead but it's interesting to get to learn a new culture specially from England yeah I've never seen a Christmas dinner cooked that way what the vegetables and stuff wow a new insight on a new way to cook a Christmas dinner looks so good so amazing so awesome keep the videos coming
Cheers Gilbert, traditionally, goose was the christmas meat over here, but we pinched the idea of turkey from your Thanksgiving dinner! Now it’s become our new tradition! Atb, Simon
I am so GRATEFUL that I found your channel. You are so inspiring, and handsome to boot :) . The first video of yours was discussing men' mental health. And glad that the Lord kept you safe and put a wedge between you and what could have been. I am addicted to watching your videos. I hope life continues forward for you and your family.
Happy Christmas & a Merry New Year
jack mehoff - Thank you Jack, and to you too! 🎄

your dog has some really soulful eyes
Great video
This came up in my recommended, awesome video!
Thank you! Happy Christmas!! 🎄
Good vid mate enjoyed !
That big ol' fur face pup was pretty funny. Neat dog.
Haha - Yes, she’s a lovely girl, loving, completely loyal and very patient - especially while I’m filming!
Simon, a bloke in the woods Yeah, I'm guessing part of that patience comes from the fact that if she waits long enough, she will get some most excellent treats. I do love dogs, they are typically better than people.
Agree wholeheartedly! Of course there are exceptions!! Yes, she’ll be very well behaved if she thinks there’s steak on the menu ha ha!
Simon, a bloke in the woods 😄 who wouldn't be well-behaved for a steak dinner? Lucky pooch
Simon, another great video mate, it looked delicious, it looked like Maggie enjoyed hers too.
How on earth did you keep a straight face after the comment " I love thigh, it's my favorite bit of bird" I did laugh mate, nice one.
As always my friend, look forward to more in the New Year.
Here's to a very Merry Christmas Simon,
Atb, Paul.
Hahaha!! I’m surprised I didn’t get more comments about that!! 😆 glad you enjoyed it Paul, Atb and a Happy Christmas to you too!!
Yum - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Oh, I am also a big brussel sprouts fan - If you havn't ever tried it cook them in with bacon!!!!!! All the best.
Maggie looks beautiful, really enjoying your chan to bud, top stuff.
Cheers! Glad you’re enjoying the channel! She’s a handy bushcraft companion too, whenever I need tinder, I just pick off all the debris she’s collected on her coat haha, Atb, Simon.
Love it
Cheers Dave! Atb, Simon
fantastic. Tried this once for 10 people, it did not work out well. this definitely makes me want to try again, thanks
Hahaha - that’s brave cooking for 10!!!
One pot meals are always great
Yes, agreed! I didn’t have a big enough pot for all this lot haha!
yes
Just a thought Simon, how about a Siberian log fire to give you that projected heat into your oven, Lars at survival Russia shows them on his channel, just wonder if that might be an idea you can try with your reflector oven.... 😀 very enjoyable videos. 👍
Thanks Alex - I think that’s a really good idea, I’m still getting used to it to be honest!! - I’ll have a look at Lars’ video. Glad you enjoyed the video, Happy Christmas!
Lovely video Simon, happy Xmas to you and yours mate, cheers craig
Thanks Craig! Happy Christmas to you too!!
Merry christmas and happy new years mate
Scottish Wanderer - Cheers Stuart, Happy Christmas to you too mate! Looking forward to lots more spam in the new year! 😆
Not stopped watching your vid's yet lol
Hahaha! There’s a few to wade through - some of the older ones are a bit ropey!!
Happy Christmas 🎄 to u both
Thank you Shirley, and a happy Christmas to you too! Maggie is a Newfoundland - a great big ball of fluff, but great for collecting tinder off the forest floor!
Looks quite tasty, Simon! It didn't look like Maggie got much, but that may be because of her big, sweet Newfie head makes that bowl look tiny. I hope you both have a wonderful Christmas.
Haha - Yes, that’s it! I’m a bit careful about giving her too much rich food especially with the salt - she’s got quite a delicate stomach and changes in diet upsets her - little tasters are fine. Happy Christmas! Simon 🎄
Wow that looks so cool I have saved it to my private videos for future ref , Merry Christmas to you and maggy :) best wishes
Thank you!! It really did taste good! A very Merry Christmas to you too! 🎄
Nice one cooked dinner in the woods on a fire the mrs has trouble cooking one in a full kitchen lol hope you and your family have a merry Xmas. Atb. Alb
Hahaha! Don’t let her hear you say that!! Cheers mate, Happy Christmas.
hahaha Simon, allways a treat! looking good mate!
Thanks Ben! I did taste good! Even Maggie thought so! Happy Christmas!
hahaha awesome! have a good one youreself!
"I've got a little star.." hmmmm I believe Maggie 'won' the cracker and it's her star haha
Great video and channel, mate! :)
Hahaha - quite right too! She did have it on her collar for a while, well, about a day! Thanks Dave, Atb.
Simon, you are defying vicious rumors that I heard about British people that they hate (pumpkin pie) and cranberries. I told them that they were missing out and it is because they did not have MY pumpkin pie. Merry Christmas! (three years later)
Nice one mate looked a lovely meal. Merry Xmas to you and the family. ATB Paul
Cheers Paul! It did taste good - first one of a few this year - just call me Geraldine! Happy Christmas! Simon.
Nice. Merry Christmas friend.
Marcus Chan - Thank you Marcus, and a very Merry Christmas to you too!
Happy Christmas!
Hahaha - happy Christmas to you too!
I loved this Simon, excellent, Maggie is so cute :)
Thank you Georgina!
Thank you Georgina!
Christmas pudding? My mom made english sticky pudding ..I think that's what it was called. Every two years or so my parents ventured over to the UK for the theater.. she liked the sticky pudding.. she
replicated the recipe. Tasty as I recall ...
Hi Simon,
Now that's what I call a camp cookout, root veg do better in a one pot cook, and they keep better flavours and vitamins than boiled, only fail point, no brandy sauce for the pud 😁😁😁, take care in these troubled times 😷😷, hope you and your family are doing well, give a hug to Maggie from me.
Thankyou for the post.
Nige.
Thanks Nige - keep well! 👍
Thanks for inviting us! Yes, sarcasm. Sniffle....hahahaha
Ah......sorry about that! You’re invited to next years! 😁
That looks SO good! I'll have to try this myself one day!
I'd love to see a collaboration video one day - with one (or more) of the other greats (MCQ, Zed, Sandy Jack et al)! This would have been a good one! CZcams Bushcrafters Christmas Dinner!
Having said that, not sure how well it would scale - I'm sure it would be possible though!
Keep up the good work Simon! Loving your work!
Thank you! If I’d had Mike and Zed along, the fire would have been more of a success that’s for sure! Hehehe! There was certainly enough turkey though! Cheers mate and Happy Christmas!
Very nice, a shame that you couldn't finish using the reflector oven, but they can be a bit difficult at lower temperatures. Especially in your case where the wood wasn't putting out the BTUs. But that is why they call it outdoor cooking, it isn't McDonald's! LOL Always nice to see Maggie in the woods. Great companion, almost as nice as mine.
Wonderful
Cheers! The spuds were a bit disappointing, but the rest was lush! Atb Simon
Nothing wrong with a little mash.and you had gravy
Excellent Video ;-) I would say how small you cut your spuds no need to par boil they would have roasted with the carrots and parsnips. Good effort though ;-) Merry Christmas to you n yours and a HaPpY New Year
Cheers Michael - I think you’re right - they probably wouldn’t have turned to sludge either!! Lol! Happy Christmas!!
Hi Simon, we have pit roasted vegetables a few times now, dug a small scrape in the soil, lit a fire and let it burn down to embers. Place the root veg in a tin foil parcel and then lay on the embers and cover for about 45 mins. Works an absolute treat! Goes really well with a spit-roasted half leg of lamb. Great film as ever.
Thanks Mark - that sounds great! It’s always been on the list to cook in a pit, hangii style. Gonna have to try it out! Cheers, Simon
I'll look forward to the video with great anticipation!
Love your video! Your Christmas meal looked DELISHOUS! Are those pigs in a blanket hot dogs(like in United States)or lil sausages? And I love sprouts too! Keep up the good work! And Happy New year to you 🎉
Thank you! They are tiny traditional English pork sausages - more like a breakfast sausage than a hot dog sausage. Got to have sprouts with Christmas dinner - it’s the rules!! 😁
Happy new year!
Great vid subscribed 👍
Thank you Matteus and thanks for the sub!!
Hi, Simon. Just checking out your listed videos!!!! Man, I will be needing until next Christmas to get through them all! I think I will have to come over there for the next Christmas! Gosh, you think of everything Simon. With such a "Royal Feast" you could even invite members of the Royal family to join you. At minus two °, you probably wouldn't get any takes! Christmas crackers USED to be custom in Australia too. Never used to get much more than a flimsy paper hat though. But WE had real silver sixpences in the Christmas Pud. I missed the Champers! But not the parsnip. Great vegetable. Never had Christmas in the woods, just on the beach in Sydney, Australia. Someone wore half a Tuxedo minus the coat, and even managed an ice cooler for the champagne. ( It was the only forbidden but tollerated Nudist Beach in Sydney, difficult to get to and hidden from the general public's view. I think your Christmas in the bush just looked great but a trifle isolated. Better send out your invites to the Royals for next year, early. They certainly won't eat any better! Marvelous.😋
Haha, thanks Carolle! I spent a Christmas in Oz, quite a few years back now - it was a strange (for a Brit, used to the seasons) experience! We had a bbq and a campout on the beach just north of Perth, a lovely time, but not very Christmassy 😂👍 plenty of VB meant we didn’t care much! 😁👍
@@simonablokeinthewoods yes, at 40°C. it's hard to find the zest. The only snow we have is out of a can, the sort used for deco and not the white foam from the other cans so appreciated by the Ozzies! It's hard to one-up yourself with such quality of interest in the video. Doing the" Ozzie bit" in the rain, you had better be careful of frostbite! Better drape yourself decorously with Christmas decorations and streamers fitting to the occasion.
😋😋😋
Good effort bud, love pigs in blankets, shame about the spuds but isn’t it PARboil ! You can’t roast mash !! Merry Christmas mate.
Hahaha - yeah I know - anything’s worth a try though!! Cheers Johnny, Happy Christmas mate!
I used to have a ‘Newfie’, did you know if you collect loads of shedded fur it can be spun and knitted into clothing, or blankets! So Maggie can contribute to off grid living! Just need carding combs, a spinning wheel and .......learn to knit ( yep I was taught years ago, cant remember now..lol). I love thigh too Simon 😉 that looks so tasty, cant beat a meal cooked in a caravan or better outdoors!
PS where can I buy one of those high speed peeling knives 😂
PROPER CRIMBO Simon!
Thanks mate - my wife knits!! 😂😁
Hello and Merry Christmas to you. Could you tell me about the little table you are using. It lookes perfect for a small camp. Thanks.
Robert31352 - Hi Robert, a very Merry Christmas to you too!! I got the table from Aldi of all places when they had their fishing special buys on. I’m not sure if they are available from other stores - you could try fishing/angling shops. It’s a decent powder coated steel top with aluminium folding legs - compact and lightweight. Hope that helps! Atb, Simon.
Ok, third film watched. Three out of three so far. Such a lovely film, so Christmassy, how long did the turkey take. And you’ve got a great dog, starting to dislike you a lot :)
Hahaha - sorry! The Turkey took about an hour and a half - it was a big thigh! Cheers, Simon.
By 'eck that looks good!
My initial thought was why not use the oven for all the roasting? Carrot and parsnip at the bottom, spuds and then pigs in blankets on top of the spuds (for the tasty fat). But you made it work. Top job!
Wish I had! The reflector oven is great for baking bread etc, but it was too cold for roasting!! The dutch oven is a winner every time! Cheers and happy new year!
@@simonablokeinthewoods Happy new year to you, too. The Dutch oven is a great piece of kit.
One of my brothers is currently living in the woods (with his dog). I've been sending things to him, but he insists he doesn't want a Dutch oven as it would be too heavy...
Might send a few of your vids his way!
You filming and Maggy is watching around, hahaha
Thank you - she is very patient with me! She’s a good girl. Atb, Simon
Jeez... We are -20 in southern New England right now and it is getting down to -30 C with the wind chill. I would love a -2 degree day.
Brrrrrrrr! I’ve been following the weather you’re getting on the news, while you’re getting unseasonably cold weather across the pond, we’re getting unseasonably mild weather here in the East of England - I’d quite like it a bit colder here to be honest! I hope you’ve got a warm hat! Atb and stay warm, Simon.
Yeah, this is not normal weather for us at all. Normally I would say it doesn't get much worse than -5 and where I live now it doesn't see much weather below 0, so with the really cold weather all the new cold tolerant fruit trees I planted this year might not make it. Hoping to do a couple of camp cooking videos with my 4 y.o. son once it warms up a bit, but that may not be until at least March. Your how to reflector stove is great and I am going to make one for next year. Great design.
Cheers Robert, -5 is about the lowest we get normally, sometimes down a bit further, but right now it’s hovering around +4 - almost t-shirt weather, haha! Glad you liked the reflector oven, works well with a good hot fire. Atb, Simon.
Glad it is so warm for you guys, lol. We have -25 C this morning and I am going to try and throw boiling water in the air with my son to see if it turns to snow like I have seen people do. I don't even want to know how cold with the wind chill this morning. I can't remember it ever being so cold here before and only been in colder weather when I was in Utah a few years ago and it was -35 C.
GOD….I’m starving…😳😳……🤪. BTW….that titanium long spoon….what particular make is that?… i use long latte spoons…everyday, at home…. especially, the flat head handle ones….good for levering top free…on Paprika tin….👍
