  • Have you ever wondered what makes German chocolate cake German? Spoiler alert! It isn't German at all! In today's video, I'm talking all about where German chocolate came from and how to make this delicious classic cake.

    GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE RECIPE ►
    4 ounces (114 g) Baker's German Chocolate melted
    4 ounces (114 g) water warmed
    4 large eggs (68 g) yolks and whites separated and room temperature
    12 ounces (340 g) All-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    8 ounces (227 g) unsalted butter softened
    14 ounces (397 g) granulated sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    8 ounces (227 g) buttermilk
    4 ounces (114 g) vegetable oil
    COCONUT PECAN FILLING RECIPE ►
    4 egg yolks (72 g)
    12 ounces (340 g)evaporated milk
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    10 ounces (284 g) granulated sugar or brown sugar for a richer flavor
    6 ounces (170 g) unsalted butter
    7 ounces (198 g) flaked coconut
    7 ounces (198 g) pecans chopped
    1/2 teaspoon salt

    Honey I put 2 bars of German's chocolate in my cake....it's a little darker, but will make yo eyes roll back in yo head...my most requested cake ever! I love how you're willing to teach us...❤️

      A customer has asked me for a German chocolate cake but with buttercream frosting instead of the coconut and pecan frosting. Never heard of such a thing but I’m using this recipe for the cake batter. Looks delicious!

    I've added melted chocolate to your easy buttercream & it works great 👍🏻Also you mentioned using browned butter & trust me it's so worth it! I brown my butter, & toast both my pecans & coconut. It's TO DIE FOR. I even went super EXTRA once and used toasted sugar in the custard 😂 Thanks for all of your great recipes & tips!

    I have made German chocolate cake for 30 plus years and this recipe is by far the best! I made both icings and everyone thought it was delicious! The SMBC is so good. My new favorite all around!

    We can be great friends, then! I adore coconut, and I think I’d be kicked out of the state of Louisiana if I didn’t love pecans 😆 This is the exact coconut-pecan frosting recipe that my mom passed down to me. It’s sooo good!

    Do you notice a difference in mixing quality between the plastic and stainless steel bowls? If I were to buy a Bosch would you suggest the stainless steel over the plastic? I notice you sometimes go back and forth between the two. Is it good to have both? Thanks! Your vids are fantastic and your recipes are a hit whenever I try them out.

    I used to never like German chocolate cake (was never a coconut fan), but they say your tastes change as you get older. When my cousin and her boyfriend moved into a house together, I offered to make them a cake, and they wanted German Chocolate cupcakes. Tried it again, and OMG. Yeah. It's a good one. Never be afraid of trying anything again that you didn't like as a kid.

    Hey, Sugar Geek, aka, Liz. In your Italian Buttercream frosting where you have 8 oz of egg whites but then in (114g)... Did you mean 8 oz or 4 oz? Just wondering... The frosting and the cake looks amazing. Thanks.

    I notice using grams vs oz, they measurement is slightly off, anyone else have this issue.

      Use brown sugar you get more flavor.

      Every buttercream is different so I usually say how long it lasts in the specific recipe

    My God! You are a Beautiful woman! I love that you don't have a ton of makeup on, ( you don't need it ) and that your just so delightful. That cake looks so amazing, I wish I could have a piece of it.

    My peeks won’t stiffen. What am I doing wrong. I have put in the freezer and everything to cool it down and it’s still runny

      Oh no! Did you use fresh egg whites or pasteurized? I find fresh eggs easier to whip into meringue. And are you using a metal bowl or a plastic one to mix? Sometimes leftover grease or fat can hang on to a plastic bowl, and that can prohibit your meringue from whipping to stiff peaks. So I always clean my bowl and whisks with a little white vinegar before making SMBC.

      @@SugarGeekShow I figured it out. I used the store bought egg whites. And I think that was the problem. I tried again with reg egg whites and it was perfect. Thank u for sharing ur recipes they come out perfect every time. Well except this time but that was totally my fault 😂
