That can be a very good thing, too. I am watching a totally different series called Superman & Lois. All the drama between the characters usually gets resolved at the end of each episode because the characters actually talk and comunicate with each other instead of dragging unnecessarily just for the sake of drama. It is refreshing, the main difference is, that show actually has a main story arc that reaches the whole season and keeps you interested and invested in the story, added to the mature and charismatic characters. In here, there is no major plot, no main mystery, nothing that keeps the arc together, we just have a random bunch of characters waiting for the next drama to happen and react to it without ever learning anything from it. It gets boring so fast...

I absolutely agree they should have never identified Gossip Girl in the first place, but in my view, if they wanted the teachers to be Gossip Girl so badly, they should have just let them be horrible people who did not care about the students; they could have been legitimate villains who were fed up with their students' disrespect and wanted to ruin their lives and those of their parents. Let them laugh and guffaw at the pain they're causing. Let them call the students names and insult their parents behind closed doors. LET THEM BE VINDICTIVE. That would have at least made the teachers somewhat more interesting as villains rather than "misunderstood guides". This whole "I'm doing this to teach you a lesson and inspire you to change the world" bit is soooooooooo beyond ridiculous.

If you’re going to do a twist this dumb at least make it a bit entertaining by making the teachers bitter and petty

      @snazzyethel Před 2 lety +26

Yes and the new Gossip Girl still does some incredibly f*cked up things like stalking kids, posting photos of kids getting undressed etc etc! If the show had some self-awareness they could actually mine some dark comedy from how these teachers become stalkers and borderline child pornographers without a second thought, but will NOT betray their liberal values. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the point of the OG Gossip Girl about how petty, elitist, and backbiting teenagers with money can be? I didn't watch the original show, but my understanding of the concept was about all the shit that hyper-privileged kids can get up to, especially if you can just BUY your way out of the consequences. That is not a group of people would are interested in changing the status quo, generally. I can see the showrunners using the _facade_ of wokeness to mask the usual teenage cruelty as a plot device, but trying to make these kids unironically socially progressive? Nah, that doesn't fly for me.

the original GG was iconic and enjoyable because all the actors and actresses were charismatic and had chemistry with each other. They all looked fabulous and we didn't need to hear repeatedly that Serena is the It girl, we saw it. The teacher idea could have worked if it was just Tavi. If her motivation were to shame and hurt these kids because of ENVY it would have been phenomenal. That way they could play into Tavi's young looks (how she's able to blend in, how they can empathize with her/tell her things they wouldn't tell the "older" teachers) and could have built a backstory where maybe she worked hard to get a job at this elite school while these rich kids take it for granted. If she was unabashedly self-righteous and ruthless because she simply had no remorse for richy-riches having consequences then it would have sold the illusion.

    • @margaret_adelle

YES. They could even have the inciting incident in the first episode. She tries to pull in a student for one of those "serious talks" because she wants to be the next Mr. Feeney from Boy Meets World. And then said student goes to their parents and has the higher ups at the school warn her that such "harassment" could lose her the new job. So she *tells* herself that it's all for the kids own good, because she can't lose the righteous self-image she has of herself, but devolves into pettiness and revenge.

It's because in the very beginning they were written as such. Deplorable human beings. At their core that's what they were, spoiled rich kids. Sure they adapt and learn, but that's what's good about the show during the first few seasons. They try to improve. Heck even Chuck grew from a womanizing prick to a somewhat womanizing prick who tries to find love though in the worst way imaginable because of his twisted perception.
I mean, that was the point, we shouldn't be able to relate to them because they were the 1% and that the one guy, Dan, was the only one we "may" be able to relate with, but is somehow being corrupted by the 1%,but is still also helping these 1% change a little. The 2021 reboot does nothing. They want to be woke but there's nothing good about being woke since they themselves don't understand it.
Woke is a bad term and stupid. Being humane and having empathy is a much better word. Woke is dumb because it's a term used by people who think they're humane and understanding but doesn't know how to be humane and goes about it in an entirely wrong way. And that's this show.

One thing that bothered me in the show the most is that they're rich, but not _rich_ rich. Now, if you watch the OG Gossip girl, you could understand their financial means/high social statuses not only by their outfits, but also their staff (Doormen, chefs, chauffeur, maids..), their lifestyles (Shopping at Chanel, having personal limos/helicopters, high end events) and general behaviour that comes with a life of privilege.
This allow us as viewers of entering the life of super-wealthy teens that is far from our reality but also understanding the threat that is Gossip girl for them. For the life of me, if it wasn't constantly repeated throughout the show I would absolutely forget that Julian is popular and wealthy. I don't get why she have minions, like, at all. Why her? She's boring, has a questionable style and her father is not that famous? The contrast between her life and Zoya isn't as intense as the one between, let's say, Dan and Serena. Another factor for why this fell flat is that Gossip Girl as a concept is rather dated. When the show came out when I was a kid, it was before the 2008 recession and before the rise of social media. Seeing that sorta lifestyle was shocking and scandalous during that time. Now? We're used it thanks to seeing influencers and celebrities do that stuff for over a decade thanks to social media. Other shows like Euphoria has teens doing more shocking stuff in them.
For something like this to work in the 2020s, they needed to change things up a lot more. Change Gossip Girl to a completely outside party who is a poor teenager or 20 something who is struggling to get by and feels it is the only way to get enough money to survive, but slowly gets addicted to the power of it all. At least that is a more believable motivation for such an act than "teachers want to teach these kids a lesson" or whatever. Nix the creepy shit like showing underaged kids doing it on that account, because that would get someone arrested irl and is just gross. Comment about social media influencers and new money rubbing up against the old money. Have them be problematic. Real life rich kids ARE. Or have one character pretend to be fake woke and call them out to make them grow from it. This series had potential, but it was just wasted.

@medusa j Pretty much. It was like the show was so afraid of being "canceled" on Twitter and wanted to appeal to this generation so much that it ruined its own concept by making all of the characters hallow fake woke shells. Rich kid characters like these must be flawed as hell for the concept to work. Make them antiheros or outright villains instead of watered down "good guys".

In 2021 the characters would all have some kind of presence on IG and it would be a key part of e.g. Blair presenting her and Nate as the perfect UES couple, Jenny trying to climb her way up the social ladder etc. (That shows how much better the writing was on the original BTW - I literally have a better understanding of what Blair and Jenny would be doing in 2021 than I do of where Audrey, Julien etc are coming from in 2021.)

I actually think the idea of a teacher being Gossip Girl could have been interesting if they took a different approach. Like really lean into the idea that a grown woman who is stalking and bullying minors online in an effort to make them “the next AOC” is clearly unhinged. She could have been a “hyper reality” Mona Vanderwall type character. The idea that MULTIPLE teachers would put their livelihoods on the line as well as risking criminal charges (stalking, intimate photos of minors, ect) because they don’t like their students makes no sense.

I think what these teachers really lacked was a good “motivation”. What I mean is to really go against all the accepted values of being a teacher, an educator, you need something big. This nonesense of teaching the kids a lesson is not that. With one teacher involved - could be. With multiple? No. A teen show that had teachers turning against the students was for example House of Anubis, which of course has its own issues, but there you understood the motivation of some of the teachers - they were seeking eternal youth and immortality, and for example one of them had a terminal illness, and had this as last resort. I agree that here what could have worked was a real villian as a teacher, one completely unhinged, or something as big as immortality if they were to have all the teachers.

… I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment. But seriously, there’s far too many characters and far too many storylines. You hit the nail on the head with it seeming like the writing was from an algorithm. Just let shitty characters have shitty motivations. It’s fine and honestly welcomed. It feels like they shot twice as much footage, and removed every second of motivation and character development.
The other thing I think deserves mentioning is that Gossip Girl would have a VERY hard time remaining anonymous on current platforms. In a world of solid photos and videos, as well as IP traces being quite easy, this would have been figured out a long time ago. You can’t tell me that when the teachers start going rogue on each other that they would all keep up with the security side of the account. Also, as a former teacher, you can’t tell me that EVERY teacher would be willing to lose their license and go to jail over what would end up being basically ch*ld p*rn.
The biggest changes I think that would have helped the show beyond your points:
    1. Gossip Girl should have happened on a site like Reddit, where people have more anonymity and less opportunity for DOXing. It’s more “old school”, but retro is in right now.
    2. Flatten Julien’s character. She tries to have morality and depth, which doesn’t work for the concept of an influencer who needs the world to view her in a specific light. Let her be a less power hungry, but more image driven Blair archetype. No influencer would torpedo that kind of money over dumb drama.
    3. For the love of god, get Julien an actual publicist. If her dad is that rich and she is that famous, her publicist wouldn’t be a 16 year old. Having a non-family member adult on the show (who also isn’t trying to destroy children’s lives) would provide some grounding.
    4. Reduce the number of teachers who know about GG. Again, see point about being added to a Family Watchdog site.
    5. Let someone be an actual villain. Not everyone needs a redemption arc, having dome neutral-evil/chaotic-evil characters help you understand who you’re supposed to care about. At this point, I feel like the writers are trying to protect almost all characters from too much scrutiny, which also means we can’t find anyone to root for.

We watch the teachers believe they’re doing this righteous thing, they see the behaviour changes they want, but some kind of major fallout happens that causes them to reconsider everything they’ve done. Just as they’re about to delete the account, they realize they’re locked out. Someone hacked GG, they aren’t in control anymore, and we have no idea what her identity is. Could even make it so the hacker is blackmailing the teachers about having made the account. We could watch the teachers in fight about if one of them is lying to blackmail the others. The tension about who GG is, if it’s a teacher, a student, maybe even a parent would be great.

You could do something like satirize the whole CZcams apology thing we’ve seen on many occasions. And to make it even worse, it's one of the most cushiony jobs you can have, instead of flipping burgers or being miserable dealing with god awful customers or just in general being stuck in the wage cage, you get to show up to a set and casually read lines and emote with essentially a bunch of friends and get to just hang out and get paid nice for it. I've never even seen the show and I love Blair just from what he's said about her. She sounds so cool and interesting!

I honestly hadn’t noticed how bad julien’s acting was, but the teacher, HOLY SHIT, im never super critical of acting but that was completely awfull, like someone that is in a high school play bc no one else could make it, simply terrible
Not to mention her “motives” because she starts fucking them up really good, then someone else starts taking over and suddenly she thinks what they’re doing is immoral and wrong, as if she wasn’t doing the exact same????? That was sooo poor
And obie: “oh me and julien we were done ages ago” two days later starts dating her sister and acts like she is the most amazing girl ever, then he’s suddenly madly in love with julien again for NO REASON

The teacher being GG could actually be a good premise if they turned her into a low level Joker type.
On the surface she seems to have good intentions but in solo moments with the audience we slowly see her dissent into madness.

I feel like I was hit by a truck when you said all the characters were 16, I really thought the season was set in uni or something based on the first half of this video
They all look like third years or older uni students, so surreal lol

Something about the acting and performances back in the early 2000 shows was so great. Like the vampire diaries, teen wolf, gossip girl ,pretty little liars. The charisma of the characters. Idk what It was buy is missing in today's shows sometimes

Right? I agree. I think that the actors back then put more effort into their performances, because shows like that were quite popular at the time. I dunno, but it always seemed that a lot of them were at least semi passionate about their characters. And it showed. Most actors on most teen shows now just seem tired, like they don't really want to be there, or they're not enjoying the character. Euphoria feels like a definite exception, but I honestly don't consider it a "teen" show.

even the "diversity" featured on the show is laughable to me since most shows are determined to pass the paper bag test. also literally every character looks almost identical to at least one other character on the show lmfao.

That's why I didn't even bother. I knew from the trailer I'd get so confused by who's who that I'd be as pissed as FSN. The diversity makes little sense bc most of the wealthy Americans are white. When there is a (racially) diverse character they're race is ambiguous. Like you said the paper bag test

@Lex Baker Yes! For me, I understood the show as rich WHITE kids living in New York and their scandalous lives.

@Lex Baker yes yes yes! I personally went to public school which was genuinely diverse, but the first guy I dated when to the most elite boys school in my state and told me that their school had one token person of colour they would use for school promotion and that was it. I go to law school now so a lot of my classmates went to those same schools and one of my female friends told me that the school asked the students to make a scholarship pitch and a few groups said an indigenous scholarship and the idea was turned down so fast. GG wasn’t whitewashed just a reflection of an unfortunately true reality
