In Europe, at least where I live, visiting a dermatologist is free.
@@iskra3550 same here in Lithuania; Europeans UNITE!
Ooh, changing it up with a male derm. I’m here for it 👍🏻
@@furzamurza statistically that isn't true. There are some specialties that are male dominated, like orthopaedic surgery, but you'll find that in specialties like pediatrics, dermatology, OB/GYN, and a couple others that they're actually female dominated. So while it's not like they don't exist, there are certainly less men in derm than there are women
@@furzamurza that's entirely fair, unfortunately statistics apply to populations and not individuals so sometimes it can be hard to visualize the data in specific localities. Maybe for some reason there is a larger proportion of male GPs in your area and it's evened out somewhere else. Hope you found a good one either way!
I hope patients one day stop picking doctors based on their gender. As a doctor, I don't want it to be based on that.
I know so many amazing female general surgeons and male OBs and derms.
His approach to skincare
" You do you " which is very true . You don't need to always follow trends
I'm loving this series!! A lot more than those celebrity skincare routine!
I loved what he said about “natural” products and how so much of skincare is actually about defying or counteracting nature. It’s like, if you want to be as natural as possible, forget all the products and just embrace getting old! 😂
Most people using natural products want to avoid harsh and toxic ingredients in their products, they don't want to age badly
Vicky Papa the counterargument people often have to the natural brigade is that just because something is natural or naturally occurring doesn’t mean it’s good for you like arsenic and just because something is man-made doesn’t make it bad for you, that everything is a chemical, and a lot of the actives we apply topically already exsist in our skin like collagen, Glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, vitamin A etc etc. like in Bella thrones routine where she stayed her preference for all natural products, she was using sugar and lemon and coconut oil scrub which can be waaaay too abrasive and acidic and pore clogging to be safe to the skin. And because they’re no preservatives in the mixture and she got water into it multiple times while she was scrubbing her face there’s a chance for microbial growth which isn’t great for the skin either. I see both sides honestly.
I just like natural products bc I'm poor😂😂
@@nairabee245 You definitely make some valid points, but there are other factors to consider. Keep in mind that not everyone who prefers "natural" skincare does harmful diy treatments like Bella. In fact, she was ill-informed seeing as she solely relies on random things from her kitchen that haven't passed the certification that ingredients in ACTUAL products need to receive before they hit the shelves. Also, most legitimized natural organic products do have preservatives, they are just healthier alternatives that unfortunately don't last as long as the preservatives in conventional products. I personally try and use natural, certified organic products (head to toe; internally and externally) because I have done my research and I know that is the lifestyle I want to lead. There is a misconception that people who use "natural" ingredients cohesively avoid man-made products. That is simply not true. A product can be natural AND man-made; it's not definitively one or the other. I try and avoid toxic or harmful synthetic chemicals that are frequently used in mainstream products, but I am fully aware that chemicals are virtually in everything. I am also aware that not all chemicals are toxic. Contrary to popular belief, natural DOES mean better, at least in terms of health on an internal level. But natural may not mean better when determining whether or not it works for certain individuals and their skin/body/hair. Furthermore, "natural" doesn't automatically mean ineffective or counterproductive. It is truly a matter of doing your research and doing what works for you.
KURLY KPOP FAN i misspoke when I said man-made. I meant synthetic when I said man-made. Imo one label isn’t automatically better than the other. Synthetic doesn’t equal harmful, natural doesn’t equal ineffective or effective etc. agreed on the last sentence u said.
Why do all these derms contradict each other? One says can never have too much vit c, this guy says you can. One said coconut oil isn't a moisturizer, another says it is. One says you can mix retinol and vit c, he says you can't. We need a derm PANEL!
They aren't. Different people require different things, not everything is cookie-cutter.
@@alishamcg I understand that. I mean they are stating objectively contradictive sentences. I heard 1 derm definitively say you can mix vitamin C and retinol (depending on the type of retinol) and he says no you can't very explicitly. I heard another say you can never have too much vitamin C and he says it can be irritating if you have too much. Yes, skincare is custom to everyone but some are making very clearly defined statements that are then contradicted by another dermatologist who says well it depends on x,y,z. Ergo, why it would be useful to see derms discuss their knowledge while going through the comments. There are some blurred lines I would like more information about. For example, I use a retinol and vitamin c eye cream at night - how do I know by looking at packaging that my retinol is one that's acceptable to use with vitamin C? The coconut oil thing I don't really care about all that much because I know it trashes my skin when I use it.
@@____darrah____
First off, the "You can never have too much ..." is an American/western phrase, and it is not meant to be taken literally.
These are quick videos and they don't have time to explain their reasoning. Do not use this as legitimate medical advice or expect medical advice because these videos are meant for entertainment purposes only (if you go to the video description box).
The dermatologist read the comments and guess what the commenters are trying to say, and keep in mind the doctors are different people who think differently-- so one might be thinking of a specific formulation in mind, but another doctor might be thinking of L-ascorbic acid (which is commonly used) rather than specific formulations which lead them to say these things. That's why it's hard to discern, because it's a short and quick video meant for entertainment so don't take it too seriously.
True! My retinol has vitamin c in it. So what is it?? 🤷🏽♀️
John Smith gettin an attitude... shouldn’t you be colonizing America or somethin, jeez 😐😐😐
I know what u mean tho. There’s no point in them doing these vids to educate if they’re going to say things that can be easily misunderstood.
The reason I think is maybe because they were certified in different times. The knowledge of skincare in 2004 is different from 2009, and can mean the difference in whether there have been extensive studies on certain ingredients. Idk though, could be a lot of different factors.
I’d say when they contradict each other that’s just a time to figure out what works for you. Unless they say “this is 100% harmful”, I wouldn’t be too worried about trying it if another derm says it’s okay/good.
Wow he was my dermatologist fifteen years ago and he still looks the same!
I did not expect the rule of KISS was "Keep It Simple, Stupid"... love it!

@@hanagreg But if your skin's oily your makeup doesn't stay, so there's no point in wearing it in the first place.
@Felicia Hernandez Just make sure you never go on accutane because you can say bye bye to your oily plump youthful skin with that! If I could go back and time I would, dry skin is way worse than oily :'(
My skin regulated itself better after I stopped using cleanser and moisturiser, as well as overly hot water. Having a balanced diet and a good night's sleep also helped.
i feel like this guy is secretly 80 yrs old but fools us all with his skincare witchcraft
Rhiannon Davies Botox too.
there is certainly something going on with the hair color, and the wrinkle-free forehead etc................. there are outside forces there!
I did some research: he's Madonna dermatologist and helped create her MDNA line, he's 50 but looks younger indeed he also does botox but promotes a healthy lifestyle too.
To those who are horrified at not using a moisturiser, he's not the only doctor thinks this. Drs. Zein Obagi, Kate Kerr, and David Jack are all derms who actually disagree with the use of moisturizer. Just saying, that train of thought is out there.
That's like the one dentist out of 5 who doesn't believe in toothpaste, lol
Yes, also the last derm Dr. Bae also said humectant alone could do. You don't necessarily need to moisturize, it depends on the weather, climate, skin type..
Dr Davin Lim on CZcams also.
@@skael1258 whoa, something's wrong with your analogy here, what's next? Doctor's who don't believe in medicines? Moisturisers are not miracle cures for the skin.
I don’t use a moisturizer (oily skin, acne prone). It was the best decision I ever made. People are always shocked when I say I suffer from cystic acne, “but we never see you with acne” they say. Reason 👉🏾Simple skin care system (just a cleanser + serum), practiced consistently (the hardest part), no moisturizer.
Is he really attractive or are we not use to seeing a male dermatologist on this channel ?... lmao great skin though
Dav I think he is

He is average
Camille he looks good dont be jealous

Snap!!! This guy is adorable, funny, and dreamy! A dreamatologist!!!
It’s so weird and interesting to see dermatologists on CZcams that aren’t like dr dray. By that I mean the way she directly says “don’t do this” or “this is bad”, whereas these derms seem to be a lot more relaxed abt things and say “that might be ineffective” or “that could be potentially irritating” when Andrea would’ve just said “that won’t work, don’t do it”
Elon Musk I love her for that reason. She’s just no fuss routines lol.
@@lilybabe1125 I like her too! But a lot of the products she hates, might work for some. This doctor gives helpful advice but also says "if it works for you and you like it, use it". Either way I respect both😊 Every dermatologist has different opinions and different ways of expressing them. And it's fine
She can be hard-line in her advice. Use what works for you. Maybe that’s an expensive moisturizer. Maybe it’s rose water. She wouldn’t advise either.
And that's exactly why i don't really appreciate her approach to skincare or susan yara's. They think their way is the only way possible
The thing is even dermatologists disagree amongst themselves sometimes. Dr Dray does sometimes say that things might not work the same for everyone, she has also mentioned that some people aren't sensitive to many ingredients, but if she was to recommend something to the general public, she'd try to recommend the least sensitising product just to be safe.
i love that his replies were quick and to the point. some of these derms go on and on and i click off
Damn, his skin looks amazing, but he’s probably just naturally sexy. Love a male dermatologist’s Perspective, especially as a male.
For those who absolutely believe in dehydration CAUSES oil production, I wonder how would they explain the fact that most skin gets oilier in more humid climate (when the temperature is about the same)? Oily skin is largely due to genes and hormones. Dehydration in oily skin is usually a sign that you've disrupted your skin barrier trying to control your oil with a lot of harsh ingredients. Compromised skin barrier can't lock in water very well, and is prone to inflammation which can actually lead to oil glands being even more crazy. My point is, dehydration is the result of your action, not the cause of oily skin. If you have dehydrated oily skin, go ahead and use moisturisers to mend your barrier. But don't assume most or even all oily skin has dehydration.
I can't agree with this enough, a lot of it comes from beauticians and facial centers because they know once people with oily skin realise they don't need as many unnecessary moisturising/hydrating products as people with dry skin, there goes half or more of their sales on beauty products.
Don't use cleansers in the first place, then the acid mantle, stratum corneum, the good bacteria and the natural oils will not be disrupted.
Finally! A dermatologist saying that if you have oily skin type, you don't need to use a moisturizer!
I thought that your skin gets oily because it's trying to moisturize itself. If you moisturize regularly, even with just a light gel moisturizer, your skin won't get as oily 🤔
@@extenebrislux Nope. I have oily skin, and I have observed that when I moisturize my skin, it worsens my oil production, so I took it as a sign that I shouldn't use a moisturizer. And FYI, studies have shown that people with oily skin tend to age much slower than people with other skin types. (LOL I'm not angry ✌)
@@extenebrislux It depends. I'm not a Dr. but I have acne-prone and very oily skin. Ever since I started using a certain moisturizer from Paula's Choice, my skin has stopped being oily, only while using the product. I've also been drinking a lot of water, since I started doing that five years ago. So far, this is what has worked for me. But I've tried other drug-store moisturizers that were too heavy for me and it would make my skin look like I poured cooking oil all over my skin. So you just gotta find the right moisturizer for you. Staying hydrated and applying moisturizer right after you wash your face, is key.
@@vicstorms2427 what moisturizer
Honestly, even if you share the same skin type as someone, your skin still isn’t the same. I have oily/dehydrated skin and moisturizer is a must for me lol.
I like these derms reaction to coconut oil. The previous doctor said the same thing. They are so calm in explaining that it can be beneficial to those who can handle it, those that have dry skin. As opposed to some people here on CZcams, where they immediately say coconut oil is a big no no. N freaked out when they see people using coconut oil
Rooney Mara just because coconut oil is known to be really pore clogging so most people can’t handle it lol. Some can though.
*ehemm susan yara ehemm* oo
I know right. I have combination but prone to become oily and I can tolerate coconut oil very well. It is hard to explain to people as they keep on telling me it will clog my pores but it didnt. My skin was amazing & I have people complimenting my skin.
Well, id you get A LOT OF CCs when you use something with coconut oil, you'd freak out as well.
Yeah, but the thing is, there are so many options out there for moisturizers, all of which do a better job of moisturizing without the high risk of comedogenicity, so it should never be recommended to anyone. Coconut oil is truly not that good of a moisturizer (no pure oils are), and if I were a dermatologist I'd be sure to inform my patients of that. Just because someone can tolerate something, doesn't mean it WORKS. I'd tell them if it's not breaking them out and they enjoy using it, then fine. But I'd advise them to use a proper moisturizer that contains all the components a moisturizer should contain, especially if they express concerns about dryness and dehydrated skin. It's a dermatologist's job as a doctor and specialist to help educate their patients, not simply follow along with whatever dumb skincare advice they saw on Instagram.

Please do that for me 😊
Function of beauty is quite the sensation with many people.
A dermatologist would use a plain shampoo. Zinc if we have dandruff. Hair above the follicular opening is dead. Anything you do to it is purely cosmetic. There is no such thing as moisturizing or nourishing the hair.

I like this dermatologist ... honest and jolly🥳
Would be cool to see a panel of derms addressing common questions / analyzing a skincare routine... I would literally pay money to watch it even though I have healthcare and insurance in Canada.
It really is “you do you”,don’t necessarily have to follow the trend or what other people is doing or saying. For example I use tretinoin at night,so I certainly can not use Vitamin C(L Ascorbic) together with it because that would just be too irritating to begin with(before we even get into the PH debate),I still want to get the benefits of Vitamin C though so I use it during the day(great antioxidant boost for sunscreen),I don’t use extra moisturizer on top of the essence and other treatments I have because I don’t have dry skin, and my skin looks great!
i love love love love love this series!! please never stop :)
This was a fun one. I use whatever works for my face. Period. I don’t fall for every trend. Sometimes as I run out of something, I let it go from my routine. As you get older, your skin slows in oil production. So I use a moisturizer. Heavier in the winter. It gets very dry and cold!
What a gorgeous doctor! My pores even dilated
I appreciated this so much!
I don’t know man, I cut out dairy and I went from having severe cystic acne to mild acne only right before my period. It wasn’t a “cure all” but for me (I know it’s not the same for everyone) it was a pretty significant improvement.
Sari Shryack I agree with you. I used to have really bad cystic acne in 2018 and then I completely cut out dairy for 6 months and my cystic acne has calmed down ALOT, like crazy and my skin heals faster. Unfortunately, dairy products are really bad for some people like us.
Yeh... definitely disagree with his early comment about diet not being the cause of skin issues or contributing to the worsening of the issues! So much suggests quite the opposite!

Thank you! Awesome Derm PSA!
Y’all are all freaking out because of the moisturizer comment but I’m not so sure he said it the way he intended for it to be taken... You’ll notice that he followed up the statement with talking about the importance of skin being hydrated from the inside out. This could mean that someone with oily skin needed to look for products that had humectants in them as a main ingredient (something like hyaluronic acid) that would cause dermal-level moisture to hydrate the skin. I think he possibly just misused the word moisturizer to mean an occlusive or something that just sat on the top layer of skin (simply moisturizing and not hydrating in that case). If his intention of telling oily-skin individuals not to focus on moisture as much as they did inside-out hydration, I would say he was right.
I think he literally meant that you dont have to use moisturizer. I have oily skin and I dont use moisturizer every day. After my facial I dont even have to use moisturizer for a whole week.
Yup, I'm 100% sure that there are people that can just wash their face with water and have perfect skin until they die

Clara Oliveira I will die jealous of people with resilient skin who don’t have to do anything. My brother has never had a pimple in his life and I’m pretty sure he doesn’t know people use anything other than a bar of soap to wash their face. So annoying 😂
He was clearly referring to having a balanced diet and other lifestyle choices which help regulate oil production. Besides, your skin is likely only getting dry because od your cleanser.

He's been so sensible!
i need a derm react every day
A well balanced approach. Listen it is about simplicity. And realize that you have to listen to your own skin and body. If you react negatively to some ingredients or method than don't do that but but might just apply to you. Don't assume that it's the same for everyone. And if you have very bad skin, see a professional.
I totally agree with this doctor , cause i have excessive oily and sensitive skin , and i don't moisturizer every day cause it makes my face more oily no matter how Matt they are , and i always look like a shiny mirror -_- . I don't like moisturizer that much , i use moisturizer once in a day ... I am fine with it , in summers I skipped it every alternative day . :) .

Is it just me, or does he keep giving the camera flirty expressions? I feel as though I'm being engaged in a one on one conversation lol
Honestly ya’ll, we all have different skin in the end. Two people who both have oily skin may not necessarily benefit from the same products. We have to consider: health, diet, environment, stress, and etc. This goes for other skin types as well: dry, combo, normal. Just do what makes your skin feel and look good in the end. Skincare is a journey.
More of this please!
Hit like if you want Dr Dray in these episodes!
A very great series
The thing about the cleansing oil is that the OG cleansing oils like Shu Uemura and tthe DHC, they specifically states to emulsify it.....but now, maybe in some brands, they dont? I’ve seenDr Dray not doing the emulsifying process. She just wipes it or applied a cleanser ASAP.
It depends on the formulation of the product.
Would be nice to have some specific recommendations from the derms
In my personal experience, the lesser products I apply on my face, the better the condition of my skin. Now I use only moisturiser on dry nights, and sunscreen in the mornings. Sunscreens tend to be mousturising or “oily”, so I skip the moisturiser in the mornings as using both gave me breakouts. I think my skin can handle only one or two layer at one time.
Key word: balance
We should balance everything, from cleanser to moisturizer. And, whatever works with your skin for a long term 😉
I actually saw an artist using a micellar water as a makeup remover then used it again as a toner. She explained that it could be used as both a makeup remover and as a toner!
I like this guy. Well done!
thank you for saying that sebum and water content in skin aren’t interchangeable!!! it’s not the same!
He is so on point, love it
📍
Aren’t toners used to balance your skin ph levels? Because he said that we still don’t know what they actually do and I thought that’s what we use them for
Toner from different countries do different things. Some as you mentioned are to balance the skin pH, some are to remove tiny traces of makeup as mentioned by Dr Frank and the ones from Asia are for lightweight hydration.
He was the best one yet, please have him on again!!!
It's nice having a male dermatologist POV. Harper's Bazaar get major kudos for doing so.
That said Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank is not a coming across as personable as some other dermatologist in this series. He does have excellent looking skin. Kudos to him.
Always surprising the differing information provided by different derms. Retinol and C, sometimes a no and sometimes a go. One derm even said they promote the efficacy of each other when used together. Interesting.

Great insights! This helps me a lot. Also, I wonder if he is from PA, since he pronounces "water" slightly as "wooder". 😝
i find this very consistent from time to time: Dermatologist says = you can use anything as long as your skin can tolerate it, everything is depending on your skin tolerating the ingredients. Basically listen to your skin. Beauty Influencer = NO!!! dont do this!!! stay out of this and that, DO THIS!!!! We thank God for Dr Shereen Idriss, Dr Dray, Dr Paul, Dr Henry and a few beauty influencer who really knows what they are preaching such as Liah Yoo and Lab Muffin.
