  • CZcams comment sections are always a hotbed of dissent and debate. But on our #GoToBedWithMe videos, the myths and facts around skin care in the comment section are on another level. In this episode of #DermReacts, we called in board-certified skin expert, Dr. Dendy Engelman, to react to some of the most passionate comments on our Go to Bed With Me episodes. Engelman, who practices at Medical Dermatology and Cosmetic Center in NYC, weighs in on everything from botox to fillers, and the whole skin care process.

    A dermatologist that I follow on CZcams states that over the counter (OTC) retinols in the form of retinyl esters or retinyl aldehyde are not as effective in preventing wrinkles and do not have anti-aging effects as strong as retinoic acid (tretinoin). Other beauty bloggers/skincare experts say that it takes longer for OTC retinols to be effective, but it works. Should I spend money to buy OTC retinol or ask a dermatologist for a prescription of Tretinoin?

    • @alysa6642
      @alysa6642 Před 4 lety +2

      Unless your skin has already gone through retinization (the early period of retinoid use when your skin tends to get red, flaky, dry), tret can be very difficult to start (depending on concentration and your speed with it). Compliance is an issue. But that’s probably true of most retinoids including retinols. And tret is the most scientifically backed anti-aging topical. Sooooo ask your doctor! Even family docs can prescribe it.

    • @dimasgrey
      @dimasgrey Před 4 lety +1

      most derm says your skin converted retinol to retinoid then to retinoic acid which our skin already has the receptor for it. which means our body has to double process the otc retinol, so it takes longer and less effective. that's why retinoid were prescription only but retinol is otc.
      and there's shereene idriss who says the other way around, rather than retinol > retinoid > retinoid acid she says retinol bypass the step so is already active so your body didn't have to do some work. idk for whatever reason but by far she is the only one to say so, i hope not bc she is incompetent

    I'm definitely in agreement that it's worth it to spend money on your face. At this point in my life, I'm no longer interested in splurging on handbags and shoes. But my face is priceless. Fortunately, I don't need botox or fillers.

    I use a salicylic acid cleansing gel 2 times a day, 7 days/ week. Does it count as exfoliating? Do I need another exfoliating product?

    • @1emonsqu33zy
      @1emonsqu33zy Před 4 lety +3

      That seems like a lot tbh. Unless your derm suggested it for super oily/acne prone skin? That much salicylic acid can be quite drying

      @@1emonsqu33zy oh, the cleanser is super gentle and doesn't dry my skin out, cause any irritation whenever I use it. I don't know how much salicylic acid they put it in honestly and fyi the brand is Eucerin

      @@ChauNguyen-ye4cp oh wow! I didn't know about this brand. It doesn't sell in India. Honestly, the exfoliating thing is so cultural. I see the US very into the whole thing and they're constantly exfoliating. I'm from India and my skin has very regular allergic flare ups and I have stopped treating them with anything steroid based. I prefer to be super gentle with my skin and not exfoliate a lot. So it depends if you want to do more. Or you're happy with the way your skin looks now

      I use SA 2% twice a day as well. Doesn’t cause dryness or irritation in my case.
      I do however use additional products for exfoliation.

    Enjoyable video. Although now I’m confused. Just watched a different dr say there is no actual evidence for the average person to take a probiotic. ???

      Do you know if your headaches are related to tension? If you have tension around the eyes or forehead for example, that causes headaches, then botox can help since it relaxes the muscles.

      Talk to your doctor. Depending on if it's tension headaches or migraine, depending on if they are refractory to medication or not, etc. I have refractory chronic migraine and my neurologist suggested I try it.
