This is the Cupra Leon! It's effectively a Spanish version of the VW Golf GTI, and Mat's on hand to see if this 'hot' Leon can compete with its German counterpart!
Well for starters, there’s no denying that it looks the part. With sportier bumpers at both the front and the part, the Cupra Leon looks much more aggressive than the regular Leon (even if the bumper comes fitted with a number of fake vents 😳). It also comes equipped with a number of chassis and brake upgrades, naturally.
As for performance, well there are three engines available to choose from. Top-of-the-range is the 300 (which we have here in this review) which is a 2-litre turbo petrol that’ll deliver 300hp and 400Nm of torque.
And of course, given it's a ‘hot’ version of the Leon, you also get a number of interior design updates, along with Cupra badges throughout. The question is, should you really pay upwards of £32,000 for one? You’ll have to keep watching to find out!

They're ergonomic nightmares, they've got the same weak sounding engine yet their prices are ridiculous.
Only the Golf R saves some face because it's got way more power than they say, but then again for a few K more you're getting an A45...
The only one which has something of its own is the RS3, because that engine is simply a gem.

IDK what is wrong with Matt because he is clearly a smart man since he has a Chemistry degree, and yet him and what feels like most other automotive journalists seem to think that if numbers aren't big enough then they don't exist. Like, air is what takes up ALL space that is not occupied by matter, so ANY change in the shape of the physical matter that is a normal bumper design will result in a change to the aerodynamics of the vehicle. A diffuser doesn't have to make 10% or more increase in downforce for it to affect the handling, 1% is just as real as 10%. It may not be as noticeable, but it is just as real. Also, idk what your laws are like in the UK in this regard, but in the US companies can easily be sued for false advertising, so every word that manufacturers use when making claims about a car's performance has to be technically/literally true, otherwise they run the risk of someone finding out and suing them. I'd be surprised if you all don't have something at least somewhat similar over there in the UK.

The Golf GTI is not the right competitor by the way. It should be the Golf R.
Or the “rare” 300hp Golf GTI Clubsport (which is not available in every country weirdly enough)…

When he was going through the sport settings his palm was touchig the screen, you can see the clicks. It's not the car it's Matt lol.
Matt does this often. Especially with the voice commands. He'll say something then keep talking to the camera and wonder why the system isn't working 😂
The airco 'slider' isn't a slider. It's just a touch sensitive button under the red/blue. Not sure why Matt always says it needs to be slided cause just touching works as well and is just fine.

I got a 69 plate Cupra 290 with the 7 speed DSG, the golf R in drag but lack of the Haldex AWD (which is FWD 95% of the time any way).
I wouldnt say there's no cheaper ways but they're nice looking cars, got a lot of grunt and a lot of untapped potential.
You can remap the stock setup to run on 99 octane and gain up to 365HP without compromising the cars reliability, fuel economy when driving normally or drivability.
Can't ask for more when you factor in all that!

Brilliant review, Matt. I like how you talk about the good stuff and not so good stuff. Still a great hot hatch overall. To me, better than the Golf. Then again I've always been a fan of Cupra since I bought my SEAT Leon Cupra R 210 eighteen years ago, and it still runs with 290k km on the clock!

I would prefer Cupra Leon over an Volkswagen Golf GTI or a BMW 128i, if I had to buy an entry level hot hatch.
I can still remember when entry level cars were around 8 to £12,000, now you need to add another 20k to that, crazy!

@@bmurd45 a Kia CEED GT is one of the cheapest hatchbacks with over 200hp.
Octavia VRS is 245bhp (same engine and running gear as the GTI) but you can fit all the family in as well as camping gear ;) I love mine! Stage 1 remap and you're at 310bhp!

Seat actually did well with launching cupra imo, they have some good value cars
they actually will replace SEAT, there has been some reports that VAG wants to leave Skoda only as cheap, and then leave CUPRA instead of SEAT as the sporty brand, sort of like an Alfa Romeo. So SEAT will go missing and Spain will suffer because of decreasing factories :(

Yeah and no, their first cars was an ugly SUV when it should have been the car that pretty much made their name. When they finally did release that car it arrived as a weaker limp wristed 245 hybrid or an under powered 245 2.0l. So it was slower, uglier and more expensive than the car it replaced and reviews seemed to suggest it didn't drive as well either. It's now finally taken them 2 years to get a car that at least matches the last gen models but still suffers from the fact that it is uglier and more expensive and arguably has a worse interior (at least when it comes to the infotainment and basic control interface)

Exhaust surrounds are designed in a case that if you get shunted in the rear, the exhaust doesn’t affect the engine itself!

Great review of such a big hot hatch. I just wish you covered the mk3.5 with the gpf as a hatch - the only hatch was an old manual. Would be awesome to see the mk3.5 cupra vs this one and the competitor cars such as the golf r and gti, type r and even focus rs in a drag race. It seems the cupra is always forgotten about when it comes to hot hatch drag races :(
