No video this coming Wednesday guys! 😱
Find out why on my Instagram tomorrow 🍿
He Calvin, what do you think of the Toyota starlet? The gt turbos, glanzas or just the non turbo ones?
Have you thought about a scirocco r I've got a 2017 face-lift model it doesn't have a virtual cockpit but it's front wheel drive and has dcc which it had before the new golf r. Its like driving a go kart great fun!
Hi mate
Your actually reviewing my old car. I fitted all the Maxton design front splitter (which I also damaged on the same day fml lol), rear diffuser and rear spoiler and then I went resonated scorpion exhaust (couldn't deal with the drone) but I can see the next person got it deleted.
It was a great car for a front drive hatch and different from the usual Audi S3 and VW R (plus cheaper to insure).
The wheel hop was annoying but change of tyres sorted that out a bit... Good to see my old car being reviewed as I randomly come across your channel dude 👍🏾😎
(Edit) > I forgot to add that you get dcc (dynamic chassis control) as standard where VW and Audi is an option extra...
What I love about the cupra is that they are so subtle. If you didn't know what it was, you would think it was a normal car. Even the twin exhaust at the back isn't that extreme. It's a great sleeper which I like.
I went from an Audi S3 8v to Cupra 300 SC DSG.. much more exciting to drive, more drama, interior quality is still very good… the car has much more personality and seems to tick every box I think
This current trend of people wanting a "virtual cockpit" aka digital display, is or will be in all cars soon as its cheaper to manufacture as its nothing more than a configuarable screen or 'tablet' in the dash. In a few years, or sooner, people will look back in time at proper analogue dials with fond memories...
correct, i know a few people that work in the factory that make the ‘virtual cockpits’ for VW group, they cost bewtween 100-250 euro for the manufacturer to buy, depending on the car brand.
Very good point.
same in motorcycles
I think virtual one looks really good. Especially the new Leon has pretty clean look on one of the styles and I highly prefer it over the traditional dials.
Analog is always better
most underrated hatchback of its generation, i had a stage 3 running 440bhp, it did 100-200 in 7.7 seconds, 0.1 seconds slower than a stock 458 italia.
MK7 golf gtd is better

Just came across your channel. Really like your car insights, tests and background knowledge. Looking forward to binge-watching your previous episodes and all your future ones too!
It’s a great car to drive and it handles pretty good. Only issue is the police now use the estate version in some areas for undercover traffic control.
Nice , you can blend in 😂
there is a big police station near me where the road policing (from traffic cops) are, its always a struggle to remember not to race any cupra's near me
Leeds they have two golf rs and 3 135i. Not ser the golf rs for a while though
they got formentor 310bhp to
Great vid! keep it up man! Any suggestions to any specs to put on a BMW 118d series?
Got a grey 290 ST mapped to about 360bhp and with no external mods. I really like how understated it is, but I get why some people might want something more eye catching. When being sensible you can blend in, but as soon as you put your foot down you can leave most cars for dead xD
I think for the sacrifice of 4wd and saving of 5K, these Cupra's are great value for money. They still handle very well (with premium tires) are good fun, powerful 🔥🔥 and lively! Great video Calvin 👌🏻
Leon's are decent having owned one for 3 years and now having the newer version. This time we went 1.4 DSG ehybrid 204ps. Cost £2 to charge as we got solar panels. Very torquey with the motors.
Solar panels have an original quite high outlay though, don't they? Should be factored into cost of charging if you're pedantic like me 😂
@@meady200 Usually yeh but got them free in 2011 😂😂. Eon was turning Nottingham Green. A certain amount generated goes back in the national grid.
@@80sBaby925 nice!!!!
@@meady200 panels pay themselves off over time. electric cars are a perfect use for them
£2 to charge the tiny hybrid battery? Why are you paying so much?
How random Calvin I was literally just looking at these at comparing them to Golf Rs!
Great video thank you!
Perfect! 👌
I've owned both a Mk7 Golf R and a Cupra 300, I preferred the Cupra! The Golf was amazing but too capable and dare I say sterile! The Cupra was more nimble and more fun :) MQB Platform as you say so same engine, gearbox and more.
Calvin that virtual cockpit wasn’t available until September 2018 on. So that was retro fitted and coded in.
Also adaptive dampers are standard on the cupra and option on the golf. So that’s a bonus.
Got a 290 in July absolutely love it. Looking to get a dogbount mount insert installed soon and should eliminate 90% of the wheel hop
I've owned both a Golf and Leon both 2016, one major thing I did notice was noise in the cabin, the Leon was alot louder at motorway speed, I put new tyres on the leon but made no difference. Leons chassis is ALOT more fun
The last of the 300s get a virtual dash and all the 290s after get it as standard. I adore my Lux 290, best heated seats ever. Supremely moddable as well, I already know I'll be at 500bhp within a few years. These have appreciated like crazy as well - my Lux with 8k miles was 22K, worth close to 25 now.
Imo appreciated isnt the best fitting word mate. They’ve inflated due to the used car price bubble. When new cars are more readily available and the used prices deflate again, these will drop in price to 17/18k
@@scott7010 that deflation is going to take a very long time. Supply is so low and fleet cars are being kept longer that it will take years for the market to repopulate to pre-2020 levels, imo.
@@dreamcrusher112 true but I still don’t think appreciated is the correct word, just inflated
When it does happen though, the drop off will be grim, just over or just under 10k is my guess.
@@Researcher83 I can’t wait! Running my 1 series into the ground until the market comes down. I’ll probably snap a 290 black or 300 up when they reach 15/16k
I noticed mine used to wheel spin pretty bad in Cupra mode with Bridgestone potenzas on, I changed a while back to Michelin pilot sport 4s and I barely get any now 👌
Great video Calvin 👍
Loving the videos as always my man!
Would be interested to see what tyres this thing is running up front- PS4's are a popular 'mod' and do seem to give a lot more grip from the standard's from factory. The dogbone mount helps alot as well
Why are ps4's rated so much? My stage 1 cr170 2 0tdi spins in second gear with the ps4 tyres but with landsail 588 tyres it dont? 😔😅
@@leet7031 Absolutely no idea matey - sorry! My guess would be a potential difference in tyre pressures?
@@Jonathan-ww8un honestly exactly the same , unless I've got fake ones Haha honestly them ls588 landsail tyres are unreal for the money set of 4 in 235 35 19 £240!
@@leet7031 My goodyear eagle f1s were 270 for the same size for 2 - as good as ps4 but 1mm extra tread and £50 cheaper. think michelins are a bit hyped atm. On contis I got the most horrendous wheel hop because too much power for the tyres.
@@leet7031 I can only speak from my experience. With Pirelli p6000's - wheel bounce. With dog bone upgrade - less wheel bounce. With dog bone upgrade and Ps4 - no wheel bounce, unless it's wet. Massive massive upgrade the Ps4's and I thought it was just fan boy forum sh*t!
Picked up one of these back in August. Smashing car, VERY underestimated and not in the limelight.
I had one of these, pretty much identical. Amazing car for the money, better than a golf R IMO. Main issue is most are standard spec with no optional extras due to lease deals. If you can find one with extras they're worth there weight in gold.
Same with the golf mate not many have a decent spec because like you say they were all leased. My golf has a decent spec to be fair leather dsg and other bits.
@@stichupman yes mate your right, most of the ex lease golfs are around 14-16 plate as this was the time they were best priced. The Leon had crazy deals from around 2018 onward so he market is flooded with them now. Mine was £230 a month. Could barely get a Corsa for that now!
@@rossmale8715 someone must of specced my car well from new which is suprising. It is a nice car but it's got a fault at the moment only seems to be running fwd so haldex isnt working.

Hi Calvin, another great video bud👍👏👏 have you done one on a Peugeot 308 gti? Would like to hear your review on them as we are thinking of getting one, we currently have A class Amg a220 petrol but costs an arm and a leg to run.

I went for the cupra estate AWD and in my opinion it’s another level and for an estate it handles amazing in sport/cupra mode. I was getting 4.5 to 60mph in mine standard, mine is now running 430bhp and it’s a proper sleeper.
Update as of 3rd August mine now running 500bhp
How’s it holding up ? I’m thinking of going for the abt tuned version as prices have dropped …..
What did you do for it to hit those numbers? Getting mine soon

Hi mate so this is the basics I did
After market high flow exhaust
Bigger Intercooler
Large induction kit
Hybrid Turbo
ECU Remap stage 3
HPFP

DSG software upgrade
Then I added Bigger brakes, braided brake hoses etc
I completely agree. Cupra's are one seriously cool car. I've been owning them since 2004 and my current Cupra is my 8th one!

I’ve a manual 17’ Octavia VRS combi petrol, it’s remapped and obv FWD. it’s making over 300hp and it’s a hoot. The FWD element combined with manual really makes it come alive compared to a robotic DSG 4WD Golf R.
One thing that bugged me on the 280/290/300 was it looked too subtle and no side skirts didn’t help. They look SO much more complete with some added. For looks though the Cupra R is awesome.
Agree on the Cupra R. What a stunner!
My Seat Arona FR sport has the virtual cockpit but only has a 1.0 tsi engine but Im happy with it and did look at the Leon Cupra in the showroom :)
Just popped on to see when are you doing a e46 video been ages waiting
I recently put Good Year Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 tyres on mine and it grips so much better now, I don't think I've noticed the traction light since, really good tyres!
I have a 2019 290 Lux, great looking car, great value. Looks way better than Golf R IMO, and comparable with S3. Mines stock and I need to sort the dog bone mount out to stop the hopping although recent tyre upgrade really helped 👍🏻
Great video, I have a mk2 leon cupra K1, love it and I'm looking at a mk3 cupra to buy. , Seat Leon mk3 cupra i feel are not as popular as a golf R, which I like the less popular as golf's are more common.. but hey that's my opinion.. Great review 👍
I've got the 4WD version of this (Cupra ST 300) and it leave most things for dust they're definitely not bad cars. Just not as premium inside but with children anyway it doesn't bother me. Prefer harder plastics for durability
i can attest to this.Seen a couple stage 3 cupras that do some silly numbers and eat up big boy cars like the m5.Was driving up north the other day and couldn't even shake off one in my 240
Hey mate I seemed quite a few of the estate 4drive ones.. are they that quick. Similar to golf r? Surely a m140 would be a lot quicker. Be interesting to see them side by side
@@chriscringle9263 0-60 is 4.9 seconds stock or faster with a stage one tune. I think an m140i is only RWD? If so I think it would be pretty close between the cars, but if the cupra was mapped it would win. To be honest from driving mine within (what feels like seconds) you're already at triple digits so for road driving it's more than enough
@@hydraflyer bloody hell didn't realise that mate. What a cool car and it's an estate... Cheaper than a golf r as well. I. Seen the new shape one not as nice though unfortunately.
I've got a cupra with the bucket seats etc and I think it's well better quality inside than the golf 😯 can't bring myself to get rid of mine
you should try the estate 300, it has 4wheel drive :)
Cupras are awesome cars. Ive got a mk2 Cupra almost ready for stage 2 plus. Going to go big turbo in the new year.
Have a good weekend, great content
Hi calvin whats the app called that tells you the car specification
Always imagined these would feel quicker than the golf r once rolling as less drivetrain loss of power to the road, a friend once had a cupra (generation before) when they first came out 343bhp and it blew me away how quick it was, very underrated cars.
343 from a last gen cupra. That’s defo not stock.
@@TheYBGOON not stock it was modified but not alot was done to get to that power.
Is there an update on Arthur’s golf R or have I missed it?? If I haven’t missed anything I can’t wait to see it back on the road

I know you haven’t seen them but I’ve commented so many times asking you to buy and review a Cupra Leon 😫😫😂😂. I’m so glad you’ve done it now, always wanted to know what you thought of them.
I have the estate awd Cupra, no traction issues, as fast as the Golf R and cheaper.
I’ve currently got a 290, brilliant car 👌
Me too, got the 2020 version and i absolutely love it🤩
I have the newer 290 Cupra, stage 2 REVO and they are really fun to drive quickly. Traction will always be an issue in the UK regardless of tyres though. PS4s on mine and wheelspins for fun 🥴
Hey what's that HPI app or website called? I didn't know you could get the optional extras list
Hello Calvin, could you do a video on cars that are CAT cars and what to look out for on them and if you should be put off buying them please? Thanks
Can’t fault the Leon Cupra’s. I had a 2005 Cupra R 225, one of the best point to point cars I’ve owed. Build quality wasn’t as good back then as the golf or Audi but god it was quick !! I’d have another one no problem 👍
I also had one of these bought it new in 2004, very first of the 225 versions. Fitted a magnex cat back and revo stage 2 tune, and a dog bone mount, I kept it for 6 years. was my first "real car" other than just standard model cars I'd messed around with. I think it'll always be my favourite car just through memory of the times I spent in it.
Now you’ve done the 67 plate cupra you should review my 67 plate Octavia with the same engine and similar mileage and spec see which you prefer
Think you forgot to add Seat Cupra comes with DCC suspension as standard, I think this is something around £2k option on golf...
Witch dsg to pick, the 2018 6 speed of rthe 7 sped 2019/
is it good value vs a gti both fwd gr8 vid
I got a 69 plate 290, ECU tune will give it same power as this, but being a GPF car I can't go any higher than OEM+ from racingline. But its more than enough for a FWD car.
Wish I got one with heated seats... lol
Exactly the same spec as my 300 and I love mine to bits!!!!
I have the cupra st (estate) 300 also a fantastic car and has the 4wd and arguably better looking than the golf r estate
Had an FR before buying a Cupra 300 and I am in love with it!

Seat Leon Cupra is the VAG Ford Focus ST - It's cheaper, FWD & offers something different.
In my opinion, a hot hatch is better with FWD or RWD than 4WD. A rally homologation car is fine with 4WD (ie: Focus RS), but they're not the same sort of car.
4wd is better than any fwd in every single situation.. do you realize that the s3 and golf r are fwd until it slips and then the rear wheels kick in..its a different quattro system to the a4 a6 a8 and all the rest of them..its a haldex.

I'm on my second, love it but must admit the 300 is a much better car overall than the newer 290 with all the GPF gubbins. Much overlooked cars, and I always felt like its more characterful to drive , although a little less useful as a daily than the Golf R's I've driven. These also come with way more as standard than the audi/vw (alcantara, DCC suspension, 19" alloys) which represents good value. I've worked with SEAT media UK recently and reviewed the new 2022 mk4 version of this, and found the power delivery and wheel hop to be much better, and the steering to be much more dialed in than in these mk3.5 models.

Nice car, but I don't see the point in having all that power that you cant put down. I hate that front wheel drive scrabbling for grip, at least with rear wheel drive you can have some fun with "excess" power. But I'd go for the Golf R every time over that.
Banging cars to be fair. Mines running 537hp and does 100-200kmh in 6.60 seconds with a manual transmission.
Very under rated cars which can destroy most things on the road
