    D. Al Kilany:
I propose that these performances focus on what transpires behind the artistic veil, aiming to shed light on elements outside the conventional scope and, more precisely, direct our auditory attention to distant sounds often overlooked. If we were to remove all the music that dominates the foreground of a musical performance, exposing everything occurring behind the scenes, we would be left only with the sounds of instrumental and performer distress-the 'gears of music', as you have aptly described. This encompasses the suffering of strings as they endure slaps and scrapes, stripped of the 'cries for help' that reach us through what resembles a concert of collective torture, perversely enjoyed. The performer then stands to acknowledge the audience, while the strings' wounds remain fresh and their bleeding persists on the desiccated wood of the instrument-severed from the tree's flesh-without a single applause for the instrument or gratitude towards the tree. What remains are the 'groans of complaint'-barely discernible to the audience-echoing as 'secondary hearing' in the language of composers, or 'collateral damage' in military parlance. We must also consider the overlooked sounds of audience and performers: the scuffing of shoes on the hall floor, a child's cry in the backdrop, the creaking of the theater door, resonating as peripheral noises of this orchestrated torture.Even in perceived silence, if we listen intently and employ an acoustic microscope, audible elements emerge, for I contend that no absolute silence exists in our living and interactive spaces-only what I term "infra-musical sounds."
    S. Al Tawil:
I like your description of "infra-musical sounds," and similarly, we could consider "infra-images"… Indeed, the sonic environment we inhabit and the sound of silence are the very origins and sources of all sounds, formed by the universe's architect before we altered them through additions, deletions, and unnecessary inclusions. In my project "Staccato," as you noted, I endeavored to strip away the auditory and visual constructs to highlight the essence of performance. Indeed, the performer is more significant than the performance itself, his emotions deeper than what instruments can convey, and his imagination undoubtedly extends beyond the limits of strings, bows, and notes. The connection between the human performer and the instrument, their unified moments captured in both auditory and visual nuances, outweighs the performed music, which is merely one potential expression and perhaps the least significant. If music symbolizes abstraction and freedom of expression-as I believe-it follows that liberating its essence through a rebellion against convention, inverting its instruments, and dismantling its established systems is undoubtedly a symbol of absolute freedom.
*the project will be premiered in the "Humanity Is" exhibition in VerpackereiGö Gallery - Allgäu, Germany, May 2024
