- I shoot the Captain Schaefer, engraved 1851 Colt Navy by Pietta, at different targets and distances!. This is a classic replica of a real 19th Century Cap & Ball Revolver owned and used by Capt. Schaefer in the Mexican and Civil Wars!
This revolver surprised me more than any new model I have shot in years...watch till the end to learn the my 3 major surprises that happened during our two day shooting session

Good shootin reckon I gotta get one now. 8:37
Thanks. It’s a terrific revolver! You’ll love it
Pretty impressive J, looks like your new club shoot champion to me.
lol. Thanks T
i have a first edition, shoots like yours. Handiest of all my Navy's.
That’s good to know. Indeed. You saw how taken aback I was! Thanks
Great shooting! Thanks for mentioning where you are aiming.
You’re welcome!
A clean sweep! Pietta makes fine revolvers...but that one is exceptional. Looking forward to seeing how it shoots with conicals.
Yes it is!!! So am I. I’ll do that one soon for sure…
Great video as always sir! I recently got a Pietta 51 Navy, that had those plastic grips on it. They felt a bit toy-ish to me... I came across the Magna Tusk grips from Arizona Custom Grips (lot's of really cool options) Night and day difference in the way that gun feels in the hand now. It feels very substantial and solid. I'm certain you know more than I do about options for grips though...Love the channel! Keep up the great work!
Thanks. Actually I couldn’t remember where I got my tusk grips! So thanks for the reminder. I’ll be getting some soon!!!!
i like that revolver all that engraving is gorgeous
Yes. It really is purdy!!! Thanks
To have such a short barrel, that pistol is very accurate in the right hands!! Great shooting and great video!!!! 6 out of 6 at 50 yards?? Quite impressive!!!!!
Thank you my friend! I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s not 6 of 6 everytime lol. Sometimes a lot less
You made my day with this pistol and your enthusiasm!👍
I was amazed at the accuracy and most of all the POA to POI from such a short sight radius.
I'm right proud for ya!👍🫡
Thanks! Me too! Amazed indeed
Gorgeous pistol! Great shooting skills Cap!
Thank you! It’s really a gorgeous pistol for sure.
Beautiful Navy Colt ! Duelist 1954 did a video on that same model a couple of years ago. Seems to be a desirable 1851 edition. Good shooting Jay, keep the videos coming !!
Thank you! I remember his video! It is desirable but a bit pricey as cap and ball goes… but worth it to me.
Hi J, thanks for all your great videos. I have seen a couple of videos about the Captain Schaefer 1851 Colt and they seem to be a lot of fun. Although it was a one off with Capt Schaefer it will still count as a definite to add to my collection of Rebel Revolvers of the Civil War. I'm in the UK so special models like this one are hard to get as nearly all the limited production run goes to the USA. What is the usual price for this model in the USA ? it's fairly normal for something priced in US$ ends up being the price in British Pounds + a bit more. If I try and order one now it might be 18 months to 2 years to get one ... still well worth waiting for, Cheers Chris
Greeting Chris! Thank you! It’s worth it if you can get one. I found mine online for $635 US about a month ago. It’s a bit more expensive but I took the leap and am glad! I hope you get one, even if you have to wait. It’s unique looking and fun. I appreciate you!!! Cheers
What a Lovely cap and ball pistol! And what great Shootin! I prefer my holster on the left as you do. It’s seems more natural and comfortable to me. Especially riding the old trail,,,,well most likely. Now if I had one, a new bucket list item for me, I’d make bone or antler grips. But curly maple would be sweet as well. But this is perhaps the best shooting I’ve seen with a pocket Colt. I have a CVA so call Wells Fargo pocket that has no loading lever but it’s a pretty accurate pistol but I haven’t tried it at those distances. But that one you have? I can feel it in my hand! Funny how you can see a pistol like that and just feel it in hand and know how it will fit. So Thanks for sharing that fine pretty little fancy engraved beauty that shoots fine as frogs hair on chicken lips! Now that’s fine! And of course your study hand and the sacrifice the targets made for our enjoyment! Many Blessings and More Good Shootin! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Thanks Davey! Fine as frogs hair on chicken lips!! That is FINE!!! it’s a beautiful pistol! You’d love it
I enjoyed the video a lot! Thanks for it! By the way, a piece of PVC pipe put onto the loading lever works like a cham. Take care
That would work! Thank you
Excellent video 👍
Thank you!!!
great vidio sir love the beautiful gun i have one like it but havent shot it yet
Thanks Les! Gotta fix that huh?
I have one and it's very accurate and carry it regularly
It would be a great carry revolver!!!
and that is a replica of an original gun presented to Capt. Schaefer of the Californians Militia when California was in the other wilder side of the wild wild est
Yea…he was in the California militia I just read. During the wild gold rush period. Thanks
I agree with you about the grips, they are cheesey and my grip's edges protrudes out past the front of the grip frame. Yours looks like they are fitted better than mine.
They fit perfectly. Just cheap plastic for what we paid. But…I’ll get em replaced at some point. Thanks
Next shoot some playing cards!
I’m getting back to it very soon!!!!
Great video and shooting no cap sucking or jams wow I got my Captain about a month ago have not shot yet looking forward to it did you do any prerange work other than cleaning
I stripped and degreased. I checked for burrs and didn’t find any. I had to take a little off the wedge but nothing else. Pietta always sends tight wedges. But really nope. Thanks. Have fun!
Hey J Stone how many guys cut down there 51 barrels? How common were 4-5 inch barrels?
Not really sure. This one was actual from the 19th century and I guess you could order them. But my guess is a lot of people probably cut them down on their own. Hacksaw and file! I bet they were more common than we know. Thanks
Do you use .375 or .380 round balls?
I use 380 balls in all my 36’s. Pietta takes 375 and uberti 380 but I only wanted to make 1 size and I like the nice ring that’s shaved.
If I only had a dollar for every time I've been cussed, flamed, and referred to as stupid/antiquated/etc. here on YT. when I mentioned that the human body has not changed enough over the last few hundred thousand years or so to make certain calibers obsolete and/or ineffective. With a bit of practice and the proper mindset your revolver would be a true fight stopper....Oh wait....That was already historically proven.
What's with pointing the gun up after every shot? Are you surrendering?
Starting up is/was union military training. I started it and just got into a habit. I don’t unless I’m taking my time. Then it seems to go up more noticeably. Almost unconscious at this point. Thanks
@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb nice review, thanks👍
@michaelschaefer3124 thanks. Oh straight up after shot theoretically helps caps fall off and not jam.
Outrageously expensive sawed off .36 with plastic grip!
I just don’t get it… 🤷
Yes. It is. That’s why I put it off so long.
