It will take eons to completely understand the intricacies of Raja Sir"s background music in his films. The efforts he has put and the message he conveys through his music is spellbound. We should feel proud that we are his contemporaries. Jhonny, Moondram Pirai and Mouna Raagam are his other movies where his bgm is his Magnum Opus. This is a great video. I also like Mounaraagam's bgm because if you notice when the titles roll at the beginning, the tempo and the pace of the BGM tells the entire story mapping the story's various ebbs and flows. The music really carries that film by setting the scene even before each frame is visually established.

The opening violin Concerto piece was capsulated by singitam srinivas rao ably supported by raja. As a trained classical violin player himself, singitam suggested a sampurna ragam for the scene. The scene is intended to show the musical range of the hero as a musician.

There was also a short group song filmed in the orphanage "Pani Vizhum Pozhuthinil", in which Kamal also joins the kids. This song then merges into "Andhi Mazhai Pozhigirathu"

And one more thing., you mentioned that Raja Sir used to compose more than 20 movies in a year at his peak.. he has composed over 50+ movies in a year for 2-3 years in a row .. 1986/87/88 was these years. We have the list of year wise movies .
The presentation was very nice. IMHO the musicians like sada sir vs narasimhan sir were lucky to have raja sir otherwise their skills would not have been shined❤❤regards
I too agree. While top notch musicians (chose to stick) stuck with Raaja for decades, it was not by accident or luck - they knew his talent while he worked with GKV for 8 years and he used to tell them to stay longer so they can play his compositions. Once with him, Raaja has challenged as well as surprised them each day and night (from interviews by his musicians like Sada, Viji, current flutist Nepolian, earlier flutist Sudhakar, VS Narasimhan, violin Prabhakar, then the great drummist & conductor Puru and so on) - they said they used to look forward to what was coming next each time - mere money or fame alone could not have kept them with maestro for decades. He must have kept feeding their creative hunger for all these years.
He also encouraged them to learn more from the best whenever possible, as we hear from their interviews. But he is known as arrogant, egoistic, merciless, emotionless inhuman task master - if anyone had common sense, would any musician stick with Raaja for long if he was any of it above? Task master he must be, to be able to produce the kind of music he has given all along. SPB once said Raaja showed 10-12 different ways of playing the ever popular postlude guitar piece in Ilaya nila song and one of which is in the final output. There will be zillion such stories, but maestro is not going to say all those things - may be one here and one there during live concerts...

Mam, I guess you missed out a couple of songs/scores from the movie -
1. Raaja paarvai paarkum jodigal - this song wasn't selected and didn't get to be a part of the film as the director felt that this didn't fit the narrative. Kamal Sir liked this song.
2. Just before the song 'andhi mazhai pozhigiradu' begins there's a song that's hummed as a chorus as a background in the blind school where kamal sings along with other students.
Good review… it seems you have missed the opening violin theme bgm, which was one of the highlight of the score, but might not hv noticed by many. I hv recently noticed this theme note was reproduced by QFR

There is a 4th song that comes as a prelude to "Andhi Mazhai" song that is a such an amazing song.. created as choir song in the blind school.. The visual is also equally amazing.. time stamp 28:49 in the below video ( could not find the thamizh version ).

The song less than 25 seconds, is a stansalone beauty and went mostly un-noticed bcos it was picturized as a pre-lude to the main song. And i guess Maestro made it intentionally short to give max impact to the visuals ( again a beautiful picturization by SIngeetham Srinivasa Rao the director/Screen play - He deserves an equal mention in making this movie the best Kamal movie ) . I was longing for such small bit songs like this and found 2 equally stunning songs ( i am sure there are more ..).

Dunno how in the world the Maestro creates songs that look as though he was there in that situation.. ( BTW< Bala like his mentor Balu Mahendra is a master craftsman in picturising Maestro Songs - Ilangaathu Veesuthe is a master class in how to do 100% justice to Raja Sir's magnificient melodies ).

Wonderful movie..with Happy ending..But bombed at Box office was sad to say..From title itself they gave importance to technicians first, seniority..Cinematographer Barun Mukherjee need mention.I have no idea he did in Hindi or Bengali.. Lot of overlapping scenes..Sriram used later in AN..
Also, it is said, the Hero being Blind, their main sense they use most hearing sound..in most of the scene, first sound comes, then picture come.. Though this movie is a failure, Kamal & Singeetham what a combo, they produced commercially successful in AS,MMKR..
But Vikatan at that wrote , not satisfied with Raja's performance..
