Fun Fact: This song was originally titled "Follow Your Heart" written originally as a rock 'n' roll song and also written originally with Cyndi Lauper in mind.
Info here: "Open Your Heart" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Madonna for her third studio album True Blue (1986). Written by Gardner Cole and Peter Rafelson, it was conceived as a rock and roll song titled "Follow Your Heart" for singer Cyndi Lauper, but Cole and Rafaelson never had the chance to play it for her. At the time, Cole's management was working with Madonna's, who were looking for material for her third studio album. After her manager asked Cole to present a female demo of the song, Madonna accepted it and, alongside producer Patrick Leonard, turned it into a dance song. Lyrically, it's an innuendo-laden love song where the singer expresses her sexual desire. In the United States, the song was released as the fourth single from True Blue on November 12, 1986; overseas, it was released on December 1. Furthermore, it was included in the compilation albums, The Immaculate Collection (1990), Celebration (2009), and the "video version" was featured on the 2023 remix-themed compilation, Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones.
Also: I love the music video to this song. The original music video. Madonna is like a peep- show burlesque dancer and all these guys are watching her obviously wanting her while she is singing about wanting someone to open their heart to her. Meanwhile outside of the entrance of the peep show place is this kid and at first you don't know what the kid has to do with the vignette until towards the end of the music video.
I always got from the music video a completely different interpretation. Every guy desires her but sexual desire is not enough. Meanwhile there's the kid. I know how much you do not like spoilers Seph so I'll just suggest you watch the music video to this one on your time (which inspired the choreography you just watched here). The lyrics to Follow your heart are pretty awful, it wouldn’t have become such a great song if Madonna and Leonard hadn’t changed the lyrics in the verses imo.

However yes Madonna re- wrote the song along with Leonard and it was either Leonard or Madonna that added the baseline to the track.
Also: Gardner Cole revealed in an interview that he and Rafelson worked on "Follow Your Heart" for a year. He titled the song after a vegetarian restaurant in LA where a waitress by the name of Lisa worked that Gardner Cole said he was in love with at the time and sited Lisa as the inspiration for the original lyrics.
I tried finding the original lyrics to the song but alas. My search came up empty.

Madonna does not lip sync. She sings live, with some corrective prerecorded backing support. Beyoncé, Taylor Swift et al. all do the same.
However she lipsynched Express Yourself, Where's the Party and Vogue during the Blond Ambition World tour due to the demanding choreography.
@@Datenmeer Are you sure she wasn't singing along to a backing track? It is very difficult to do complex choreo and synchronize lip movement without singing. It is far easier to sing and dance than to ensure your lips match words you are not actually saying while dancing. Requires more concentration. Having been to many Madonna concerts, it is clear that she sings live while dancing because you can hear the mistakes she makes. Wasn't at the Blond Ambition Tour though.
@@s.tupper4159you’re correct. She does sing live but a few songs with heavy choreography the prerecord is turned up to help with and to also sound more like the original record. It’s a technique many performers use particularly with lots of dancing
@@fjvbfjvb Thanks for clarifying my comments. I meant that she never literally mouths without singing. How would it be possible to sound that good without backing track support while exerting herself that fully? Not sure about 1990, but today the technology is so good that it is easy to have serious imperfections corrected. I did notice that on her current tour that some nights she sounded hoarser than others. Cheers.

This was such a physical performance. At this point she’s in the beginning of a nonstop approx 90 minute segment so I believe you can tell she’s singing live most of the time -basically because it’s not perfect which makes it even more endearing. Blond Ambition was on another level.
This was her final show. Her vocals are week here. If you watch another show, like the one released from Japan, her vocals are much, much, better.
She had laryngitis shortly before this performance in Nice.

@@charlesregazzijr2563 Madonna is unstoppable. She pushes through any ailment. Recalling how she went on tour in ‘06 after breaking many bones falling off a horse. She actually used her X-rays as background art on the stage.

I heard from my old friend Penny (who took me to a Madonna concert in August 2006) that the Blonde Ambition tour was the best one she did.
It was the first spectacle and revolutionized concerts forever. Now it's standard. It's up there with her tours, but Confessions Tour and Sticky and Sweet are pretty good and many prefer Girlie Show over BA, but BA was absolutely a revolution.
From the year you mentioned, sounds like you were at the Confessions tour. I have been to every Madonna concert she’s ever put on, and I think the Confessions tour is her absolute best.

It’s literally just the intro song, where’s the party and vogue. If you watch the whole show (which will be great) she actually makes a point of lip syncing as part of the show- something for the haters to rejoice in 😂
Madonna may not admit it, but she is clearly inspired by Michael Jackson, as was Prince. Madonna is quite underappreciated as an artist/singer due to her embracing controversy.
Do react to MJ receiving the NAACP Image Award in 1993. His song "Will You Be There" was performed so majestically in front of him as a duet by Daryl Coley and Ms Patti LaBelle during that award show.

The last wasn't lip sync'ed. At some concerts, yes, absolutely playback used in case needed. But that one, this one, and many others she's actively dancing and you can *hear* the gaps for breath, the pauses and changes in pace from recordings. A good way to tell with anyone's performances is to just check and see if there are non-rhythmically fitting syllables and breaths and how they correspond (or not) to the physical work being done.
A lot of times using backing tracks and lip syncing are equated, and that's not accurate.
Madonna sings live, she may sometimes have pre record under, but she's live.
She was definitely singing live in this one, you can tell the difference from the studio version.
Similar to Michael Jackson, I can barely think of a single bad song Madonna made.
To be honest you should probably be reacting to the official videos before you watch these live performances.

@@SephPlays I think she was lip syncing in 'Express Yourself' but that is understandable with all the dance moves in that song but yes, you can clearly hear big differences in her voice here compared to the studio version.

I don't think Express Yourself or Open Your Heart was lip synced. There are songs, I think 2 of them, where you can see she's obviously lip syncing. These vocals sound raw and if it is lip sync it's a very poor backing track that Madonna used. And I would think, she would be pissed that they used that backing track, as she's a perfectionist.
