Madonna reaction, First time hearing like a prayer - Hudba
I love when you call out her lower register. She so rarely gets any credit for her vocal range. The production put into this one segment is phenomenal. Madonna singing live while performing these amazing dance moves is amazing.
Its impressive to hear it. She's got an amazing voice in my opinion!
Where have you been? if you have never heard this song, Like A Player??? Nicki Harris is the other singer featured in this song. That spot was designed to be as sung as delivered. Also just so you know, this whole show was choreographed in just over 3 weeks. There was less than a month to go before they left to Japan to kick off the world tour. The choreographer was the amazing Vincent Patterson. He also choreographed many of Michael Jackson moves.
My dad explained to me why i didn't hear Madonna growing up. He said it was because he didn't like how "Raunchy" she got in the 90's so he stopped listening to her stuff. Kinda sad because i love her now 😅
3:30 Yes, the lyrics are suggestive 😂💯 Madonna knew exactly what she was doing!
Madonna's most famous song. You should react to the music video .
What a powerhouse performance!!!!!
as a huge Madonna fan you won me over with this video lol . ..her back up singers are niki and donna they been with her since her second tour till about 2005..
The back of Madonna’s outfit has a large M and a crown. The crews tour jackets had the same logo on them too. And were very expensive to buy if you were lucky enough to find one. Then when her Celebration Tour started last year, they released the bomber jackets as part of the official merchandise.
Madonna’s concerts are epic shows. The amount of time and energy that goes into these shows is mind blowing.
The music video's debut was one of those events where other shows scheduled were delayed for its release on "regular" (non-mtv) television.
And quickly broke the media.
Absolutely massive scandal. It dealt with religion and racism and was majorly problematic in its day. Wonderful message and lovely artistic.
It's the best live performance of this song. It's even a sin to find fault with this performance. The backing vocals are great. And I love her voice at that time. So much so that on this last Celebration tour, she returns to this church performance formula and using the same remix from that 89 performance.
Is the other woman singing the same person as the head of the choir in the video ?
She certainly sounds the same, if it is a different woman she did an amazing job.
The woman singing on the album version is Jean Johnson, the woman singing the song live here is Niki Haris and the woman on the official video is an actress as the director of the choir that sings on this song refused to do the video when he found out what the video was going to be like.
@@franciscolaprida2133 Wow.
Sticky and Sweet is a close second but this section of BA is the best live performance sequence of any artist in the history of the world.
Check out Paris Like a Prayer; it's flawless.
Yes!! This is how a MADONNA video should be felt! Yes!! She is the QUEEN 👸
the music video for this it's sooo wonderful, I love this song a looot
Nikki was too high up in the mix for some reason but ive heard so many diffent versions of this it was really nice to hear her harmony line so clearly.
Like a Prayer is unquestionably one of the greatest pop songs ever written
The whole segment of this concert could only be conceived by a genius !
I think she debuted this LAP dance version on this tour so it was actually new to the audiences and they were blown away! It was included in The Immaculate Collection later that year.
All your questioning is so right on,
O cara não conhece nem Like a Virgin e nem Like a Prayer!!! Imagina o choque dele hahahahah!!! ❤❤
Nicky and donna were her backing singers and were huge fan favourites.. Nicky really brought the gospel to the tour and song.. the logo on the back is her initials MLVC..
che bei ricordi..che bei momenti.....piangooo....dio fammi tornare indietro nel tempo. chiedo solo questo.
She’s just an element to song, she actually takes it to another level. Her voice is the one on the track as well, her name is Niki Haris, amazing. She can over power Madonna vocally, but not on stage, no one can… for sure not at that time!
A little sad that it's this way in my opinion 😕
It's dirty. And holy. That's the genius.
I loved your reaction ❤ 😊
Don't you dare call Ms. Niki Haris "Mrs. No Name". 😉
😂😂😂 yuo are too funny!!🤗
If you dont going for her entire discography like others, at least do one of her career-picks for me " confessions tour"
This is my favourite Madonna song. I love the recorded version and the official video. Madonna in Concert isn`t my cup of tea.
I like many of her official videos. I have never been to any of her concerts, and therefore, I appreciate the videos far more than the footage of her concerts.
I loved her very much when she came out. With time, in my personal opinion, she has changed from weird to weirder. She began mocking and insulting other artists and their work, and I started having difficulty liking and respecting her.
Its gosple inspired . Less so pop. Maybe that's what threw you. Its a journey of spiritual and sexual exploration . Its actually a masterpiece
You have a really nice apartment
No shade, but one has to wonder what planet you are from if you have not heard Like a Prayer by Madonna. Easily regarded as one of her best and most Iconic. Worth checking out the video and original version as this is a (great) remix.
Agreed… how has he not heard these songs is questionable 🤨
I have met a lot of people from this planet, in fact, from my own family and families of friends - who not only not have heard of the song, but also not know who Madonna is. Especially teenagers. There are tonnes of information at their fingertips now, and so much are self selected too. Not like the old days when people listen to the same , certain number of media outlet. I have been a Madonna fan since 1989 and she has been inspirational - but nowadays there are.so many other celebrities, so many. And still same 24 hours in a day.
@@hoxtondean9855
That's sad😢
@@hoxtondean9855 As a fan I am biased - and I was a music listener in 1989 so again I am biased. But even to this day, it is very difficult to go anywhere and not hear Like a Prayer - I hear it in supermarkets, restaurants, malls and satellite radio. It is listed in just about every music magazine and social media polls as one of the greatest pop songs of all time. As for Madonna the artist - that’s even crazier. She still consistently makes headlines, is still breaking records, just completed a sold out World Tour is always referenced as the Queen of Pop. Music bloggers still talk about her. The comparisons on social media are endless from Britney to the Lady Gaga days to the current Taylor Swift comparisons - whether it be articles on sales or cultural impact - Madonna is always the baseline of comparison. So even though I am biased, I do think you must have your head in the sand. I mean when I was a teenager I was well aware of the Beatles and Elvis.
My dad explained to me the other day the reason why i never heard Madonna growing up. It's the fact that he didn't care for the "Later Madonna" he said that she got a little to raunchy for his tastes so he stopped watching and listening to her in the early 90's.
I was born in 88 so by the time i was old enough to understand music he wasn't playing her stuff at all.
Actually quite upsetting as i personally love her right now 😍
The next song that follows is 2 songs mixed together Live To Tell And OH father
For some background, this followed the "Like A Virgin" "masturbation" scene of the tour, at the end of which, Madonna's voice comes out over the arena saying "God" then it transitions into "Like A Prayer", which is why they're putting the black cloak on her, over the gold corset. It's choreographed so as to allow her about 30 seconds to get her breath back after a very energetic "Like A Virgin" performance. You can hear she's still shaky at the beginning of this. The music in the intro is from "Act of Contrition" the last track on the LAP album, which is basically the track "Like A Prayer" played backwards with Madonna singing the Lord's payer over it.
Anyway, this was the first time the song "Like A Prayer" had been performed like this and she's done it this way on every show since. Yes, the song conflates praying with oral sex, leading to a climax "let the choir sing". This is deliberate and all the more astonishing when you know that this song was conceived, written, arranged, and the demo recorded in about 3 hours from start to finish. Also, the demo vocal is the album version, as is the case with many of the LAP tracks.
Niki Harris's voice isn't registering well on this recording but I saw this show live and it didn't sound like that. Something must have been off that night. Niki is singing the gospel and choir parts of the song and Donna De Lory (who sounds a lot like Madonna and who "mirrors" her voice often) is signing the harmony. If you like Madonna's lower register, listen to the "Borderline" performance on Jimmy Fallon.
Lastly, this was all sung live. The was no backing track or autotune in those days and when the mics would fail and the audio would cut out, you can hear it. It wasn't until much later that she started using mixed vocals on tour.
The lyrics are intentionally ambiguous, pointing out that sexual and religious ecstasy are not that different.
The Blond Ambition tour is an emotional journey and the order of the songs definitely meant to tell a story of sorts.
This is kind of the confessional/repentance part of the story.
Madonna's back up singers are famous...for being her backup singers. These two ladies recorded, toured., and performed with Madonna from 1987 to about 2000. They are always a big part of the show.
You should have done the video...its amazing and a thinker, and controversial
It's one of the few reasons Nikki was gonna be fired for overpowering Madonna's vocals. She later did after the Drowned World tour and when Siedah Garret got her part, Madonna pulled Siedah beside her in front of the stage which really left Nikki infuriated coz Madonna never does that to any back up singer before. Siedah told this story here on CZcams check it out.
You’re hearing the Niki Haris her backing vocalist for many years. There’s a story that Madonna would tell her engineers to turn down Niki’s mic for this reason - as her voice is a lot more powerful. Niki traditionally would sing Madonna’s lead vocal and lower harmonies and Donna De Lory the higher harmonies. Contrary to what you say, Niki has an amazing voice and noted in the gospel bridge in this song. I believe this mix in this is a little off, hence why the prominence of Niki’s vocals.
A quick comment about reviewing this concert:
Instead of reviewing it one song at a time, it should at least be reviewed in the five different "themes" in which it was performed - This second section is the "Religious" section - Seph is picking up on it a bit - but the five songs in this section are designed to be viewed together and not "chopped up" - (especially when Like A Virgin morphs into Like A Prayer) - just as the first section of the concert with the independent, dominating Madonna has its four songs performed in their own similar theme and are designed to go together.
Theres only just so many hours in the day. i would listen to it all in one go if i could but thats not currently possible 😢
Please man this song is pop perfection, just listen to the original once and without interrupting it.
"There's another woman singing with her... I'm gonna be criticized, but I don't like her voice, the other woman's voice. I mean, Madonna's voice is lush, but this other woman... I don't know, man. I don't think that it's needed. In fact, I think that it's overpowering Madonna. That's not good! You don't overpower Madonna! You don't do that! You turn up her mic! You turn hers down! It's that easy! Why don't you just do that?! I'd rather listen to Madonna." (6:05) I completely agree. At first I thought it might have been unintentional, but given that her backing vocalist's mic was also louder at the end of the song where she then performs a solo vocal, I'm pretty sure that her volume is intended to be louder and featured here as well.
"I'm on my knees in the midnight hour. I can feel your power. I wanna take you there. Is that what she said? Is that quite suggestive? Or have I got suggestive lyrics in me since the last song? Everything I'm reading into her, I'm thinking is dirty, but it might not be dirty." (3:17) I had never thought of that as sexually suggestive, but it could be. I always assumed this was a conversation with God. But now I too am unsure if this could be about a lover.
This is easily one of my favorites of hers. The dance mixes, which this performance emulates, are fantastic. I featured the song on Mix 3 of my hot mix tapes posted on my Mixcloud page.
I totally agree with you on this one!! It's probably in my top 5 songs of hers so far! Mind yoouuuu i haven't heard a LOT of her songs yet. So top 5 is pretty vague haha
@@SephPlays It's likely to remain in your top 5. This is Madonna at her peak. She was blocking out the sun at this moment in time.
I think the production messed up the mix and one of the back ground singers came out more than was intended because they gave her too much volume or because he sings louder than the sound guy anticipated. Normally it should be possible to turn the gain down right there though, so why they didn't do that remains the question.
Intentionally ambiguous lyrics to show that sexual and religious ecstasy can actually be quite similar.
A lot of Madonna songs have this kind of duality, to make you question your own perceptions and look at something in a way you might not have considered.
@@SephPlaysYou absolutely have to react to the music video of the song ! Her most iconic (and controversial at the time) one with "Vogue" !
03:55 oh dear seph you are so sweet. i love watching you. you know madonna was a spokesperson against the discrimination of lgbtq+ and women by religions, especially Catholicism. at first if you are oblivious to the silent suffering of people next to you, like i was for many years, you just don't understand it fully and might think she is blasphemous, which she is to a certain extent. but she is doing it on purpose. her performance of like a virgin was condemned by the pope and she was demonized called doing satanic worship. and she was becoming even more a rebel when she felt like women are not allowed to have sexsual desires and be so open as her and not to fell misogony .
i would appreciate if you and everyone who doesn't understand much this topic to watch some lgbtq+ documentaries or movies and get more insights. please take no offense :)loove you
but your commentary is also on point for someone watching this for the first time
ok, So are you disagreeing with me at 03:55? I'm actually rather confused?
awwsome reaction. this particular performance and particular instrumentalization and arrangement and this exact drum beat and the vibe is my favorite performance of her.
@@SephPlays no sorry i was thinking more from 00:41 . meaning her being dressed also as a nun and being sort of religious. and maybe the suggestive lyrics. all that is her actually provoking the religion. she is dressed as a nun who is a woman who had a song just before where she had sexual fantasies as a human being and as a woman. these are all her cryptic messages. so your right it'S not just in your head. but what i meant to say it is much deeper the meaning. all that to show a suppressed woman who is not allowed to be more than a behaved nun. now she is here showing us the inner dilemma of that nun who as a woman feels traped and judged called a devil. is quite serious and i just thought it sliped you away. sorry don't be mad at me. maybe I'm still not making sense to you. but it's hard to explain.
maybe i was a bit mean ha? i'll delete some words then
Who is this guy??? UGH!
More apt question would be who is this *CZcamsr*

@@johnalafis1004 amen, brother!
Thanks for your wonderful comment and great advice 😘
Cause you're musically challenged. Just responding to your thumbnail chief! :)
This is the only Madonna song I own, I prefer the studio version, the music video is also fantastic. Too bad she has lost her voice, nowadays she's an embarrassment when she "sings". This was during her wanna look like Marilyn Monroe period.
Shes old as fuq though. She belted them out for years. Her voice is still beautiful it's just different now and not as strong. Express yourself on her recent tour was exceptional.
Was actually talking to my dad about Madonna a few days ago, and he said that he loved Madonna when she first started, but stopped watching her in the 90's because he didn't care for her more raunchy stuff.
This is probably the reason why i didn't hear her music growing up as i was born in 88 😅
@@SephPlays Haha....yeah she lost alot of fans with erotica is think. Hell of a record though
Can't understand why you continue to review Madonna. She is on the wrong side of history.
What is the right side of history?
@@TheNnnnfnn It's where you will find Madonna, end of chat 👍

Because i love her >.> a little hard to stop listening at this point
Madonna has been on the right side of history at every single moment in her career. From championing Black Lives Matter, Gay Rights, and Women's Rights, and nearly being cancelled multiple times for those very reasons because she was ahead of the times. She has not done one single thing that's been on the wrong side of history. She has raised and donated millions to AIDS charities, and orphans in Africa, and built hospitals and schools for young black girls in Africa
