- Today we look at an awesome development; a new beamspring switch heavily inspired by IBM's original design. These come from Joe over at modelfkeyboards.com and are the type that feature in the first round of beamspring keyboards.

Finally i can get fired from my job without paying a bunch of bucks for a half functioning rare keyboard
Half functioning? My beamspring was the most reliable and coolest board I’ve had.
Beamsprings are not loud at all.
@@cheater00 i disagree, a normal blue switch is quite annoying to hear alone, beamsprings are muchhhh more worst. Though I admit it sounds great in terms of clicking, not great in the decibels part
@@gymbro5 well if u find one today at the junkyard , you might need to fix it before being able to use it fully. Its less likely you will find a fully functioning beamspring. This is what i meant
@@probaskinnyman4960 you're confused, the loud part is the solenoid people often add to the keyboards, the spring's click itself is very light.
Given the endangered unicorn status of keyboards and switches that go THAT far back, this attempt to make brand new modern versions is always welcome for making these vintage sensibilities more accessible, and also to finally show the custom MX community how good clickies really can be.
@@florianmerten7348 more than a $2000 keyboard
Had any updates on these? I'm really looking forward to these, but I want to hear more about how these have turned out before I pull the trigger on one!
Ohhhh man, I cannot WAIT to see what comes of these. Been wanting a beam spring since I first saw that video of yours years back.
I hope these new beam spring keyboards also come with that sweet, sweet solenoid action!
They have started taking orders. Just paid for the b122 version. I couldn't believe it when I saw they had a 122 key version. Perhaps my comment regarding the lack of that for the model f had some impact.
Anyway, the b122 corrects the two minor annoyances I have with the model f122: No gap between the f4-f5 keys and the inverted t nav cluster. to be fair neither of those were horrible as i dummied out the extra nav k and put keycaps with landmarks on the f4 and f9 keys.
This is exciting. I hope these revised vintage switches catch-on to add much needed variety in the keyboard community.
Between beam-springs and hall-effect, the future of keyuboards is lookin nice.
on the "take my money!" shortlist but only if it gets the thumbs up here. so much time has passed, I fear it's not coming.
I’ve been waiting for a new beamspring switch for years
In the words of AVGN: "WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD NAME THEIR COMPANY S... T... D!”
THE FUCK WITH THAT! WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD NAME THEIR CAR COMPANY *"STI"?!?!*
Oh dear....just the other day I was talking with a friend about my obsessive mania...errr... mild interest in keyboards and said something about the slowing of my acquisitions.... I said, 'Of course if someone redid beamsprings....'
Great to see you Tom :-)
Hope to see a review of this installed on a keyboard soon
Great that these are getting made. It's also great that it is going to be in the 104 keys form.
Amazing to see innovation in keyboard switches again!
And I here thought buying the new model f was the last time I am gonna spend an exorbitant amount of money on a keyboard.
That's what I was just thinking too. And the new model F is terrific :-)
YOOOOO new beamsprings no waaay
Just when I though the rabbit hole couldn't get any deeper
And here I was planning on getting a Unicomp Model M… I’ve never used a Model F but I’d love to try one someday.
I just ordered an XT model F that was sitting in its box in an abandoned train station or something like that. 😂
The guy who salvaged it didn't even sell any other electronics, really--mostly headlights for vintage cars and whatnot. There was no picture of the board itself, only the box, which seems to have been repaired with duck tape. It was "only" $30, though. I am expecting a corroded, soiled, nonfunctional disaster, though there's a chance it'll be in better condition. I categorically cannot afford the new model F. If I can't manage to rehabilitate this one, I'm just going to order a new model M spacesaver from Unicomp.
There are probably just as many people who prefer the model M's feel as there are who prefer the model F's. I had used one model M or other as my keyboard for about 20 of my 42 years, and can't say I ever discerned much difference.
@@bsadewitz Any updates?
Wow new beamsprings I will never be able to get
Beam spring switch with the ability to use modern keycap sets. I’m in.
That's a dangerous thing to say without knowing the price.
These + mt3 profile caps will probably get pretty close to a modern version of the classic beamspring keyboards.
@@tyrgoossens pga from kbdfans to me is more like what they used to have, MT3 is more of a modern adaptation
@@kristoffer3000 The estimated price is already on the Model F keyboard website. Going from memory, I think it's 600 or 650 US Dollars.
@@XalphYT Ouch.
Would love to see your review and comparison of the beamspream repro model!
I’m encouraged that a full sized (104 key) version appears to be in the making. A TKL or smaller keyboard is of no use to me.
Ooh, I thought this project died! Great to see it's back again.
The other beamspring (Input Club Silo) was cancelled, yes. This one not, thankfully :) .
Together with these nice etched keycaps, I would go for a keybord with such switches. :)
Great project that of resurrecting beamsprings. What a nightmare for Joe coupling by hand all those foils...
AW HELL, I didn't know Joe was doing this! Dammit, and I said I was not buying keyboards anymore!
2:47 where’s the review?
can't wait
I would love to see review on the new Beam Spring Round 1 Keyboard
having the same keyring with a switch as you and watching your finger while saying " if feels a bit different" its more tactile right ? when Iput my finger on my singular switch it jsut smoooothly goes down. but while saying this something made your finger bottom faster than it should have. there a bump that isnt isnt here on the old one before the sharp fall ?
I thought I was done after the remade Model F...dang it.
what would be perfect is a board where the keycap profiles are all the same like the model f but wil beam springs.
I hope they make a proper standard layout keyboard out of them this time.
What is a "standard layout"? There are many standards.
@@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart At least US ANSI 101/103(winkeys) key layout, and ideally adaptable to european ISO layouts to cover most bases.
Woah that's great news! This needs to be counteracted by something, perhaps a redux of your Fold 2000 review? 😶
I have something that I think might be much worse than that! 8)
Just before i sleep, hell yeahh!
I'd really love to see your review of these switches. Please tell me it's in the pipe!
Hi, can You tell if the springs of these new switches are identical to the vintage ones? I'm looking for new springs for a bunch of 3277 keyboards I recovered from hell
I'm not sure, it's best to contact Joe about this.
if this goes the way of silos I'm gonna be livid
Hi chyros, have you ever considered reviewing/ever had a stenograph keyboard? That'd be interesting i reckon
Definitely, but I don't have one xD . The channel is run entirely on donations and they're not a common thing.
YES, I CAN'T WAIT TO GET THESE STDs!!!!
previously unsaid sentences in history
Me and my idiocy reading the title as
"STD NEW BEGINNINGS"
Fingers crossed this project doesn't end up like the Silo Beamspring switch. 🤞
Agreed. I learned of its fate at the NorCal meetup in July from Andrew at Kono. Apparently the equipment would have been hellishly expensive.
This is going to cost me a lot of money isn't it ?
Hopefully the quality won’t match the name. STDs on my keyboard sound a bit scary
Yeah I was about to comment about the same.
Oh yes. Yes. Yessss.
Haven’t watched a vid from you in ages and it’s kinda weird seeing a new intro
Tom uses the new one for things like switch teardowns, and the old one for the reviews. I like both of them :-)
This must be a dream
So apparently these beam springs last pretty much forever? I wonder how the metal does not fatigue after so many actuations.
the STD switch?
I can feel the heft just watching you press down on them. These sound wonderful and they look like they have great weighting and are probably as smooth as silk!
There's absolutely no heft. I have a NOS beam spring and they are the lightest action you can imagine. Every tactile or clicky MX keyboard has an incomparably heavier action.
@@cheater00 He said they feel different in the video.
@@matthewhall6288 yes, and? the spring is still the same construction.
Outstanding achievement! Unfortunately, I prefer to collect vintage keyboards rather than switches, so I still chosen to buy the old beam, but I am still looking forward to this new creation being applied!
mx-compatible stems on a beamspring... my wallet is quivering in fear
Well, that's a surprise.
Have the original patents expired, or how was he possible to do a rerun?
Yes, beam spring switches were patented in 1971. The patent has long expired.
at 02:00 I might've misheard, but wouldn't those GOURD switches count? I can't remember the name, but the ones that are actually just a spring, not a switch 'per se'
Also if I may add, this mechanism, by virtue of being literally inverted, might be the solution for a minor annoyance I have with almost every key switch out there, the CLACK they make when returning to position, as opposed to the CLICK that the mechanism makes, or the THOCK of the cap hitting the plate.
Are you talking about Oki Tactile Gourd Springs? Then yes.
Correct, Oki gourd springs also have it! I knew I was forgetting some :) .
@@Chyrosran22 Of course, after all I only know about them due to your video. Thanks for all the content, keep up the good work, love it
Got an email they are taking orders now. I'm about to pull the trigger. I got the wonderfull surprise that there's a 122 key version. If this ships in 2023, 2023 will be my best year keyboard wise.
They've just announced a new model f122 again with separation between the pf keys. i think that will complete my keyboard purchase for qute a while.
The early version of the keyboard Ive seen looked horrendous. I hope they will come up with a better design for the final product.
See Behind The Keycap!
Bold move naming something
STD
There's plenty of people out there who don't pay attention to their company names. For instance, in the past, I saw a lot of devices from Optical Data Systems. All of their equipment had ODS in nice bold lettering. Was frankly surprised at the number of people who would say O D S without thinking of the word Odious....
I'd be interested if my experience with the model f wasn't so shit lol
What's gone wrong with your model f? I've been thinking of getting one.
I'm too curious why, I received a model F a couple weeks ago and I'm pretty happy with it!
Shame that the Silo Beamspring switch will never come to fruition. However this is a really bold move. Sounds thocky and bassy though. Let's all hope the keyboard won't cost an arm and 2 legs 😂
Indeed. After all, if an arm is part of the price, how could you type after paying? Only drawback I see to those switches is that the resulting keyboard isn't gonna be exactly thin. But ought to sound and feel great.
Never say never, they were cancelled because they lacked the funding for mass production tooling, right? All that design work is still there, maybe someone picks it back up.
The board will not cost you and arm and both legs, yet it will cost your HEAD. Bwahahaaa!!!!
Shame the move to a Hall Effect design doomed them to obscurity. I understood when they were mentioning it left more room for the actual mechanism but then it wanked on about all the potential of Hall Effect and how many typing styles can be accommodated by contactless methods and my eyes glazed over.
It will cost roughly 500$ according to the Google survey about potential buyers
Up early watching the Grand Prix?
HHHIIIIDEO-- oh, i mean IIInnnteresting
Haha my wallet’s gonna love this one!❤❤
"STD new beamsprings"
Has anyone who signed up to the waiting list got an invitation from Ellipse?
Making them shorter is a really stupid idea given that the smoothness of the mechanism directly depends on the tangent of the down-force applied by the finger against the outer wall, and that increases super-linearly and then super-exponentially as the switch height is shortened. He's literally killing the most important part of the switch.
According to the creator the travel was not affected by it
@@DerGamerChaot no but this is not about the travel, this is about the distance between the bottom of the plunger (where it's welded to the beam spring) and the top face of the key. This will be considerably shorter.
@@cheater00 I see now. I did not understand your comment at first, but that makes sense. I wonder how different it feels. I also did not understand why he did not just make it the same design.
@@DerGamerChaot maybe he thinks it's excessive. I don't think a lot of people realize why exactly this design feels so smooth, but that's the reason.
