- He's here! Not riding a Thunderhawk. But he's here nonetheless! I love him and he's awesome and he's everything I've ever wanted in a primarch for the Dark Angels! Maybe now I can play my old Dark Angels again without being too annoyed by the chaos jokes.
Huge Thankyou to Games Workshop for sending me this little piece of history. It truly is a special moment when a loyalist primarch returns to the setting and I'm so so honoured to be a part of bringing this magical moment to life.

At 13:55 On the screen it says 2:1 Morghast Bone:Ushabti Bone but out loud I Say 2:1 Morghast Bone:Screaming Skull. The Actual right thing there is the 2:1 Morghast Bone:Screaming Skull not the Ushabti bone! Although both could work one would be much brighter than the other!
Thanks for the clarification, Josh!
How on earth can you paint that fully assembled? Amazing 😮
Lucky you getting this model so early.
Lucky he is even able to get it, especially for free
This is awesome. My evening of assembly and priming/basing is now so much improved by a 97 minutes long tutorial!
You're my favorite painting channel from far ! keep up !
It's been said already, but holy crap it's amazing how you paint these elaborate models without sub assembly. I find that encouraging because I personally really don't like sub assembly. I like having the full model all in front of me at once, and having a model missing something like arms or something just feels off somehow.
GW needs to hire this dude
Warhipster, the place to go for top quality how to paint videos. Especially since GW vids have gone down the toilet.
I stop watch WarhammerTV's tutorials.....absolutely garbages. After Duncan and Peachy left.
@@Abdul-Alhazred agreed. They've gone way too basic even for beginners. Duncan of course was king and I still love his stuff and DRPA, Peachy was still good to watch and had some depth but the new stuff is just so basic and boring. Never a fear on this channel.
I can see what they’re aiming for, I do think the lower quality paintwork and extreme simplicity is okay for trying to reach people entirely out of the tabletop hobby. That being said, however, I am exceedingly glad we have competitors like Warhipster and Duncan.
Love the tutorial, I'll paint mine in this scheme when I get him!
Thanks for this incredible tutorial! Would it be possible for you to post some tips on painting the other head options?
This video has soothed my rage at missing out on The Lion novel.
Because GW only made 10 copies of the book. All of which went to scalpers.
I hate it.
You can buy it on 18th January btw
love it. Hopefully people are able to get their hand on this model. Were going to need start seeing videos of how to get a hold of the model instead of how to paint. Hopefully GW doesnt short the local shop im buying it from and already informed
Stunning miniature, thanks !
Dont Forgot the most important step!………get this model
Looks like a must for sub assembly
Been waiting for this since the Lion was revealed!
Haven’t even fully watched this yet and it looks SO much better than the video GW put out!
Love your results and process. Terified how much time this figure needs :)

I love your guides! You've really helped me build confidence painting and get into this joyous hobby. Thank you!
Enjoy your painting tremendously
It seems like I have to buy lots of green paints.
Do you use a wet or dry palette for the contrast medium mixes? Been on my mind for a bit. Love the video though!
13:55 do you use screaming skull like you say, or ushabti bone like in the captions?
Aye It's Screaming Skull like I say not Ushabti Bone. I've just checked back through and it is meant to say Screaming Skull. Both could work but the Screaming Skull one is brighter than using Ushabti Bone!
The one I’ve been waiting for! Now I jut need GW to get some more in stock… so i can paint my own!
I don't know what's wrong with my brain but every time I hear "Lionel El Johnson" my head substitutes "Leroy Jenkins..."
I'm trying to follow along and paint him with you....but I'm realizing you have way more experience with contrasts than me lol. My cloth does not look like yours.
dude ive been trying to figure it out and i cant crack his code lol been trying to over and over again but end up re doing it
Great work, I suspect Dante is next?
You suspect correctly!
Just finished my Lion based on your tutorial. I made a bit of a mess of the sword but otherwise he's beautiful. Thank you so much for your help!
Hi @Warhipster, thank you for your guide. I finish some other of your guides and usually don't have any problems. But with this guy I had. With dark black armor, all was good. But with the green cloak, it is a very bad story. First, I think I used bad brushes, didn't have a wet pallet, and used a lot of contrast paint. When I saw the result, I spanned all the paint from the lion and the cloak. After this, I made a second try with fewer layers of paint, but it still looks like crap.
The main problem "2:2:1 CONTRAST MEDIUM:ORK FLESH:DARK ANGELS GREEN" - paint mix doesn't want to lay on the "2:1 KARANDRAS GREEN:CONTRAST MEDIUM" layer.
In your video, the figure absorbs paint as paper. But in my reality, the first light green layer makes a shiny cover (The color looks really similar to yours but has a lot of extra micro brush lines, which looks bad). And the second layer looks like I try to put water on the varnished floor (it is very transparent and doesn't want to come into contact with the first layer).
I can't find the real reason why it is so bad. And with this figure and guide, I'm really upset. And maybe I will switch to other technics of paint.
I hope somebody will have a better result.
Wow really great looking and inspiring. I am trying to decide what color to use for his armor. The black looks really awesome on yours. Definitely one of your best. Thanks for the great content.
I like the black armor way better than green or the halfway between black and green. It'd be cool to see a bone colored Lion though
Awesome result!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let's GO!!!!!! Nicely done!
Awesome 😍😍😍
Will he be making an appearance as part of your Golden Demon entry?
Not gonna fight you. That IS the best head!
There he is!
I love this. Absolutely amazing. But I don't have half of those paints. Damn I really wanted to try this.
Great job
Warhipster, what would you suggest for a scheme that wanted to put a little more green into the armor? Playing more on the "so dark green that it's mistaken as black".
awesome work
Very good content.
how long did you wait for the contrasts to dry before applying second layers? at the beggining of the video the first 15 minutes ....and why didnt you go with sub assemblies for this type of mini? wouldnt be easier to get the cloaks underneath ?
By the Emperor, over 50 paints!?
Been following you for awhile and your content is fantastic! One question though. I just started getting into Dark Angels and I think I've seen you use 3-4 different recipes for the green power armor. Which one would you recommend, or are they different methods for different units: / models?
Phenomenal job as always 👏
How do you think a pre-shade of dark angels green, followed by a thinned down black legion on top would work for the armour?
@@hues.of.heresy I was thinking of this as well since I like the "So-Dark-Green-It's-Almost-Black" look rather than straight up black. Was thinking of doing that black pre-shade he does for the armor and going over it with Dark Angels Green, but maybe the Green first then the black over the top would be a better fit for what I'd be after.
Great result once again! Could you go back and redo Njal stormcaller, i think you have become a much better painter, contrast paint user since you painted him. Or is it just down to Space Wolves contrast paint being what it is. I have never been able to get a good result with it, compared to most other contrast paints.
Anyway love the Lion! Was not sold at the black armour at first but seeing the end result, with that deep lovely green/cream cape just fantastic. =)
Let's goooo! Also, do you ever rest? Your video output is insane.
see's paint list, looks at my 3 shades of green...
Wow, that model looks a lot like a golden demon to me
amazing watching you paint and see how you controll the contrast paints :D! Question tho! say around 40:33
do you put the brush in ur mouth to reshape the brush into a point? :D ! must taste awful haha :D
The holy grail
At around 14m you say screaming skull, but the video says ushabti bone
I've checked it and yes it is meant to say Screaming Skull not Ushabti Bone my words are right my Text is wrong! I've pinned a comment above that explains!
Why start light & go to dark on the cloak instead of starting dark & working up?
Hey, was wondering if there is an alternative brush size other than the ortis opus size 00? Like is there a citadel brush that same size u could recommend?
top! Veramente un capolavoro!
Does anyone knows the scale of the Lion miniature?
I really wanted to do some kitbashing and I am wondering with what parts he will be compatible
Do you seal your miniatures with anything?
I hesitate to use corax white as a primer instead of white scar, to correct errors more easily. This will change the final rendering a lot?
I used White Scar on this one! Did I say Corax White out loud at some point? I just checked the beginning bit and it says White Scar and I did say White scar at the beginning. Whire Scar. Either primer would be fine though!
you said white scar but as I'm going to use corax white I was wondering if that would change the result. Thanks for the answer 😉
🔥🔥🔥
My favourire versions are the bare headed and helmeted ones, that's why I bought two Lions, just like I bought two Guillimans, two Calgars, two Azraels and two captain Messinius, yeah I admit it, I'm a 40k freak and I'm proud of it
Хорошая работа ) но очень много разных красок не уместно ну скорее всего реклама красок
You are mine โค้ส
There has to be an easier way than mixing all the contrast paints so much. It puts me off using the guide a bit in case I can’t get the consistency again if I need to mix more.
You know I went over it in my head a bunch and he’s such a tricky one. For one thing the Black isn’t Black it’s a Dark Grey Green and the Greens of his cloak and his inner cloth both vary from each other. I tried to get as close to box art as I possibly could. This one was darned hard to get close without losing too much of what makes the GW one so iconic. I think there’s something in maybe going up from black on the green of the cloak with classic Paints. The trouble is all that cream is a nightmare from a black primer. I reckon if you borrow more from heresy era Dark Angels and go for Red on the cloak, something like my Horus Ascended video could really look awesome. Long story short there’s definitely simpler recipes but I couldn’t think of a simpler one that gets as close you know?
@@Warhipster honestly much better than the official gw guide, also your videos help me expand my paint collection.
