How Polaris Ruined the 2020 Scrambler 1000 S

- Polaris has announced the 2020 Polaris Scrambler 1000 S. There is a problem with it, however. A problem big enough to keep many riders from forking over their hard-earned money.

In 2019, Polaris released their ATV and Side by Side line-up. The problem? It was missing something that many riders loved, the Polaris Scrambler 1000. Well, that has all changed with the release of the new 2020 Polaris Scrambler 1000 S! There is a problem that is important to fully grasp, however.
Performance
Polaris went ahead and threw in the same Pro Star 952cc Twin Cylinder engine they have been putting in many of their other 1000 machines, so no real change there...I mean, other than the fact that they finally put it in the Scrambler (and its pushing 89hp)! The 2020 Scrambler does have few new features worth noting, however. The first is Throttle Control. The Scrambler now has a "standard" and "performance" mode allowing you to control if you want all that the Scrambler can throw at you. They have also added variable-assist steering that they are calling ProSteer (sounds fancy). I like to explain this as the "Dynamix" of Steering...sort of. Basically, the Scrambler is taking into account your speed, riding, and other features to give you the proper amount of electronic power steering.
Suspension & Wheels
The new Scrambler 1000 comes with adjustable *Walker Evans 2.0 shocks,* which, Polaris claims is the most adjustable and premium suspension they have ever put in an ATV. Polaris has also included **High Clearance A-Arms giving this machine 14.5" of ground clearance! To put that in Perspective, the Can-Am Renegade X xc has 10.5 " of ground clearance. I should also mention, Polaris went ahead and gave the Scrambler long-travel suspension with 12.5" travel in the front, and 14" travel in the back, that's pretty impressive!
When it comes to where the rubber meets the trail, the Scrambler 1000 S has 12" aluminum wheels with **27" Duro PowerGrip tires**. I can also say with excitement that Polaris has put the same size tire on all 4 wheels (thank you, Polaris).
Lastly, I should mention that Polaris claims to have reinforced a large portion of the machine (seems like the theme for Polaris in 2020). They have made the **chassis 31% tougher, transmission parts 25% stronger**, and took the front differential from the RZR 1000 S. It is always great to hear when brands are focusing on making machines tougher, especially on a machine built to take a beating.
Style
When getting a quick glance at the 2020 Scrambler it may seem very familiar. They have kept a lot of the same style from previous years but you will find a few features that stand out. First is the P**ro Armor Lightbar they have included. Then there is the **3" adjustable riser, and finally, the exhaust is centered right under the back of the machine. Oh....one last thing, it's 55" wide!
Which brings us to the one single reason I won't consider the 2020 Polaris Scrambler 1000 S. By widening the Scrambler, Polaris has changed the entire dynamic of the ATV. There are many trails that do not allow ATV's over 50". Ironically, this is especially true in the state of Minnesota (you know, the same state that Polaris houses its headquarters). Now I am not against wide machines, after all most Side by Side's are over 50". When it comes to ATV's however, 50" is the sweet spot. You are open to all the more narrow trails, which are now out of the question for the Scrambler. Many people who ride ATVs versus Side by Sides prefer to ride more narrow & technical trails. There are times where I will leave the side by side and grab the ATV specifically so that I can ride those style of trails (and I know I'm not alone).
This leads me to another issue, want to throw the ATV in the back of your pickup? Gone are those days of convenience. You are now stuck bringing a trailer, even if you are just taking one machine with you. That's an issue I could get over, but still very inconvenient. There are many times where I am traveling to another state for a trip and if it is just me and the people I am meeting there, I will throw the ATV in the back of the truck instead of worrying about the trailer.
So while the idea of a wider ATV may seem enticing, it is the single reason why I won't consider the 2020 Polaris Scrambler 1000 S. That says a lot considering the Polaris Scrambler has spent a couple years as my favorite ATV on the market!

They seem like amazing machines. Just too wide for some many trails/States. Ultimately, I would have loved to see Polaris have the Scrambler 1000, then have the additional S model if they were going to go wide.

and if it's a desert machine it would be no good in Canada. by everyone's else's comments it would not fit down half the trails where i live you would be stuck riding the roads while the under 50 inch would would be having fun doing jump and mud puddling and muddy hill climbs. to get to the fun trails you would have to carry a chain saw and be cutting every 20 feet in some areas to make it wide enough. the trails i ride were originally mean't for thge old 250r 4 and 3 wheeler's. and now you can drive your riding lawnmowers if you dare. there is side by sides but there mainly stuck to the paved for being to wide.
Just bought one. The 55” stance is the best thing to happen to it. As well as the long travel suspension! What a beast!

I feared the extra width, riding in New England where the trails are often tight and rocky. Bought one anyway and glad I did. Soaks up the rocks and I have found it surprisingly nimble in tight trails.

I suspect you're right. This machine is 18 grand in Canada, and both dealers within reasonable distance from me don't know when or if they'll be able to order more for the first model year of it. So basically at least here if you didn't order one right away, you're not getting one till next season already.

Polaris machines are selling like Hotcakes right now (in Canada)....if you want one of the specialty versions, like the Trail Package 850 Premium or the 1000 xp you pretty much need to RUN to the dealer and get it or you’re SOL until 2021 😔
One of my local Dealers has only 1 Sportsman 850 Premium Trail Package being delivered in the next 4 weeks....with any luck I’ll be able to get my hands on it 🤞🏻🤞🏻
If you look on the Used ATV market (as I do almost daily) 90% of the machines for sale are Can Am’s....the rest are Arctic Cat’s, Kawasaki’s & Suzuki’s 🤣🤣
People tend to keep the Honda’s, Yamaha’s and Polaris machines 🤔🤷🏼♂️

I love the specs on this machine. For us out west, the old Scrambler was too narrow, too low and not stable enough not to mention it fell apart with hard use. This is a great machine for those of us that like to ride hard and fast and don't have to thread trees. As you alluded too, there really should be two models, one for people like me who have never seen anything like this offered before and would have to throw another 10-15K at the older machine to make it worthy, the other for the people that need a 50"- machine.
For people that complain about the weight, you don't make a machine stronger by removing material. I can guarantee you Polaris didn't put extra metal on there for the fun of it, it all makes a stronger machine, an increase in price and weight naturally follow. For people that complain about the price, if you want a comparable performance machine starting with a smaller format, you'll be $$$ over the cost of this one and you still won't be close. If you are a casual rider, this isn't your machine.
For those that say you might as well get a SxS that's like telling a surfer instead of buying that really nice board, they should just go ahead and buy a boat...totally different experience.
Alex Kollitz about to wide for me, I’m out on the west side of wa, most of our trails out here are surrounded by trees, and a lot of root wads to bite at the tires when you start to really rip, yes their is a rider skill level that plays in, but still.

They weakened the Scrambler and Sportsman base model options to push consumers towards the S.. that's the biggest fail in my opinion.. would have loved a Scrambler XP 1000 with the beefed-up steering and front diff in the original chassis... the 850 Scrambler just isn't the same...
Agreed. The problem I see is they didn't create a Scrambler 1000. They just created the S. Had they have made the Scrambler 1000, then just added the S model I would be a lot less caring of the wider option...just don't make that "they" option if you want the 1000

For several reasons I've been loyal to Polaris for decades. Polaris isn't pushing me toward the S. They're pushing to Can-am. I ride in the forest mountains and it's looking like I may be on a new renegade or outty soon. It's time for a new ride and Polaris is going limp!
They make 50" SxSs, why not have a +50" ATV? My buddy is planning to get the Sportsman S. He likes riding an ATV over a SxS, but wants something that can hang with our RZRs. His current Sporsman 850XP ain't cutting it due to suspension and stability. The new S should fit the bill. We don't ride anywhere that is 50" restricted so it's not an issue. With the added width, length, travel, and clearance, the Sportsman/Scrambler S should be a trail beast! Dealer has one on order and we're going to check it out as soon as it comes in.

No. you're looking for excuses. I'm in Washington. Wont fit past the gates and on the tighter trails. Don't say out west. Just say in open country where anything can fit, this ridiculous thing does.
Polaris knows their market and you aren't their target market for this bike, it's like saying you won't buy a cfmoto force 800 because you can't drive it on the narrower trails...which you have and can't ride on class 1 trails.....But if you want to rock in non trail areas then this is going to be a wicked bike....who rides trails!

Hey PowerModz, I don't disagree with your comment. I guess the difference is its more normal to know going in that your SXS is probably going to be wider and it's also expected when you look at them that you are getting a bigger ride. I think a lot of riders still get ATVs because they want that smaller, different style of riding.
I don't disagree with you though, Polaris definitely isn't making trail riders their target market with this machine. I would see less of a concern with it if Polaris would have given riders the Scrambler 1000. Then added the "S" as an additional option.

I don’t know where you’ve wheeled but where I lived and lived now it’s full of 2 trail systems. Ca, Or, Wa, NV, Az Ut, Co, Nm, these are the areas that I’m familiar with. Once you get in the mountain areas of any of these states there are many 50” trails and the last article I saw stated that somewhere in the area of 50% (more in some areas) of the ATV’s and SXS’s were being sold west of the Rockies.

I love my scrambler, its been heavily modified for mud and recently got a new set of trail tires and rips like crazy. 55" is something i'm looking forward to trying. The old scrambler were 48.6" and with aftermarket rims that would add 2" to 4" you getting near the 55". A plus to polaris using the same engine is theirs going to be tunes, exhaust and clutching available right away. The price hasn't changed from the past 1000s either. I for one can't wait to see it in person.
Thats why its good to have different toys for different riding locations. I pick my 1000s up tomorrow. Can't wait.
It will fit in some trucks. I have a ram 6'4 box and while the gate remains down, it clears the sides by an inch or 2. Looks intimidating but it goes in and out easily. The suspension and ride is excellent. Good point on trail limitations but i suppose we just ride where we can. Its a great machine.
I live in the south where all of our bikes a big and wide, we don’t do the trails where we have to have restrictions. We literally have thousands and thousands of people who ride every weekend. I would hate to live where they tell how you can ride and what speed you have to go and no modifications to your atv or utv.

Unless New Brunswick Canada has the world's widest trails, this so called "problem" of being too wide is ridiculous, I'm having zero issues on the trails due to the width, this is an awesome machine, one of the guys in our group has a Razr 64" wide and even he rarely has issues on the trail. Favorite things so far are the ground clearance, it feels great not having to change my line because of larger rocks on trail, I just sail right over them without touching. The suspension gives a very comfortable ride, I'm going from a Can-Am Outy 650 which I really liked, but I definitely am enjoying the Scrambler way more!! landing jumps on 650 felt like a rock and front end was heavy, this thing lands so softly and properly. The extra width also helps with staying out of the ruts made by side by sides, along with the obvious stability benefits. Now one area I'd give the advantage to my former 650 is braking as far as safety goes, the engine braking was much more pronounced although safer I did find it a little annoying, I prefer the bit of coasting to a stop with the Scrambler, but when you really need to stop in a hurry I have to give a slight edge to the Can-am I had, for me it's not enough of a difference to be an issue however. Although I may put pipes on down the road, I enjoy the stock sound of this machine, it's not overly loud at regular speed, but has a nice throaty sound when you give it a shot of gas. I also prefer the less top end, jumpiness of this compared to my 650, coming off and on to my trailer is much easier, with the 650 not matter how hard you try to feather the gas it would lurch ahead or backwards, that being said once you do give this the gas it really doesn't take long to get going in a hurry. At 6 ft tall I also love the standard riser on this machine I can actually stand up straight instead of having to hunch over like I did on my Outy. I managed to find an area that still had some fairly deep snow and the Scrambler worked great great getting thru it with no problem. Overall the Scrambler is a very comfortable and fun machine and I highly recommend it.
Yeah that’s the reason why I’m looking at the 850 scrambler the 1000s is just too wide for some of the trails here, I don’t want to have to trail ride with RZRs and Commanders if I’m on a quad
You’re right about the width I am in New York State Albany area I just looked at the brand new Polaris I like it it’s beautiful looking machine I have a 19 Polaris sportsman premium I love it but you’re right about the width so that will cut back on sales of that machine and plus $15,000 you can buy a side-by-side you’re right sir
I'm up around Oswego area. The width will definitely be a problem on my local ATV club trails. I know dirt bikes are off limits and I'm sure SXS are too because of width. Are trails are pretty narrow spooky in spots.
The scrambler 1000 s isn't intended to be a regular person's wheeler. What it is ment for is an almost race ready, desert ripping mechene. What it is made for is to kick Can-Am's butt on the track or some fast desert trails. That is what I think anyway.
Reading through the comments I think a lot of you are missing the point. The 55" machines are a niche product, and probably more Polaris just testing the waters to see what kind of response it gets. If it doesn't sell, they'll stop making it. I personally have no use for a 72" wide RZR, but I'm not upset that they brought one to market because I can still buy a 50", 60", or 64" machine. What's so bad about having options? And really, the Scrambler is just a re-bodied Sportsman with a few changes and adjustments, so it's not like you couldn't get a Sportsman 1k and upgrade the shocks and trim the plastics, and BAM, you have a Scrambler. They still make all their other machines under 50". I also wouldn't be surprised to see the regular Scrambler come back a little later in the year, or next year.

Thanks for the thought out response. I understand where you are coming from. I'm not even so much against them having the 55" wide machine. I would have just rather seen them have a base model 1000 first (like you mentioned with the RZR). They took the 1000 away, then brought it back but in a way that prevents many from getting it.
I also would love to see them bring the standard width 1000 out later in the year.
What????? I ride with SxS's all the time in trails, what are you going on about the width for??? You do realize there are more and more people riding around in wider ATV's thus forcing the trails to widen (fact across the board).... The sport is evolving and you're going on bitching and complaining about it?? Polaris is 100% ahead of the game on this and you my friend are way off mark here. Your video will not age well. By the way, I was born and raised in Quebec City so for any of you Can-Am fanatics, Bombardier/Can-Am is in my blood but anyone who truly rides whether it's trail or dessert conditions will appreciate the fact that Polaris totally won the race on this one with the wider stance.
Why would you want a scrambler for tight narrow trails? I really don’t think that is the market Polaris is targeting... wide stance on a scrambler makes to me.
I have a scrambler and love it on narrow trails. I like to ride all types of environments, which is why I love the scrambler. It's great in so many different styles of riding. I do understand where you are coming from though and I agree, I don't think that is the market Polaris is targeting here.
Really, I just wish they would have released the Scrambler 1000, and the Scrambler 1000 "S". That way all the riders waiting for the Scrambler 1000 to come back, wouldn't have to choose between getting such a wide machine, or getting something different altogether. Much like Polaris has done with the RZR for example.

"I'd go to the Yamaha dealership and look at the 700." That's why they still make the Scrambler 850 which is PLENTY fast for trail riding. This wasn't informational. It was 8:05 of complaining. The biggest downfall I can see is the price. It is steep. Width, long travel suspension and overall development, Polaris knew what they were aiming for.
Somebody COMPLETELY missed the point. If the trails in your state are too narrow, then don't buy this model for crying out loud! Polaris makes plenty of narrow products to fit narrow trails (they're called "Trail" models). Also, this is definitely not a desert specific machine. Sure it can be ridden in the desert but it will mostly be ridden on all the same trails across the country that SXS's travel and it will perform great.
I use STANDARD MODE all the time especially in tight spots when I don't want it to be as aggressive. Very useful options. I absolutely love this machine.
ITS a decent marketing tactic. Is what it is.. But the Funny part is.. After my after market Wheels and Tires, Mine is a Solid 51" wide. So ahhh that's pretty wide.. Plenty wide. For an ATV. 51" tuns of "stability".
So now I'm missing 4" inches of awkwardness?

With side by sides being waaay wider than this and more popular, width is no longer an issue. The CanAm Turbo RR is 72” wide lol.

Yeah I’m from DR and people adapted to utv soo if a rzr can go thru this also can go. I love it. I definitely dishing the dirt bike.
Also made room for a bigger dif, and besides 50 inch trails ( not many anymore do to sxs running around) the added width helps a ton on turns and the suspension is way better.

Hey Tractor Man, I hear you. There is a definite difference between the Sportsman and the Scrambler though. I would have liked to have seen Polaris bring the Scrambler 1000 back, then create the S model as an addition to that if they are looking for options. Much like they have done with the RZR. There is quite literally a RZR for everyone! 😄
The scrambler is the same as a sportsman just different plastic. Don't like the 55 inch width , then buy the sportsman XP
The width of the ATV is correct. Minnesota needs to update the trails, but this state sucks so they won't. 50 inch is too narrow if you also want long travel suspension.
It's a good concept but why not make the regular 48 in wide version as well? This machine would be great for Desert riding, but where I live here in Idaho most trails are either 50 in and under or Forest Service Roads. There were times when I would like to have a wider machine when trying to keep up with my brother in his RZR 1000 but for the most part I'll stick with 48 inches

All MN trails are Class2 (65" max).
Google the MN trail maps... "OHV trail locations map MN" .
I can't find a MN trail that is limited to 50".
Polaris worked with MN to make trails Class 2... for SxS.

Dude. They didn't ruin it. They took it to the next level. I have the sportsman1000s and both it and the scrambler are in a league of their own. And worth every single penny all the way around!!

Polaris did the same thing w snowmobiles a while ago and it didn't last long. I agree with you on the 55 wide that makes it a class 2. I own 2 xmr 1000 renegades and wouldn't run anything else.

@@pavmentsurfer13 Polaris made one model of sled to wide in the ski width for narrower trails. Awesome handling sled but you had to be careful on certain trails that were narrower. It was like trying to get a sxs thru a atv only trail.

I've been thinking about buying a new scrambler 1000 it was scrapped in 2019 and I couldn't see spending my money on the 850 when I had heard a new one would be out for 2020. But as someone who rides and lives in new England most of our trails are very narrow and hard to ride with a 48" wide machine. Anyway I'm buying this year and as disappointed I am in Polaris cause my first choice was a scrambler, looks like I'm going with can am...
In Michigan the state trails are 50" max rangers won't fit either but on the other hand it is legal to drive all atv's on most dirt roads and all regular 2 tracks
@NMR is it lake county where you ride by chance? we're just north of Baldwin I rode all day Saturday but couldn't find any signs of them working on trails yet
The thing is that the scrambler wouldn't perform well if it was a 50 inch wide atv and had still kept the same ground clearance and suspension travel. I'm pissed that there is no manual options for a "sport" atv other than the yamaha, nothing beats the feeling of really driving a machine and I would buy this thing instantly if it was a manual or had a manual option.

I feel your grief about Polaris making a machine that you cant really even ride much in their home state here in MN... however, I have been told that Polaris have some people (not sure if this is true for sure, this is word of mouth) that are lobbying in our state here to push for atv class clarification changes which would be amazing. Just recently this last year they added that atvs are allowed to have snorkels (factory and aftermarket) which was more of a gray area before, but they now have clarification for that. What MN really should focus on for class clarification is the weight for each class. they currently just have nothing over 2000.they need to loosen up the regulations a tad for widths allowed. I've seen people stopped by dnr before while unloading their sxs, the width measured on their machine and told to go home and if caught on any trail at all they'd be fined. this is with a factory side by side machine with a simple aftermarket wheel and tire setup that pushed their overall width 1 inch beyond whats allowed. 1 inch! the whole width management is a bit ridiculous here. Have the classes set based on weight and width, allow the width to be increased and all will be well.
Polaris makes side by sides that can’t go on 1/3 of the trails as well, and many trails are adapting to the abundance of side by sides.
I doubt it would actually be as big of a problem as you think seeing that the extra width is down low where there are no branches.
I knew the gig was up when a the GNCC Scramy riders were selling their rides!!!!! For all the good Polaris did on the 2020 Scramy S they phucked it up with that 55" bs!!!!!
Being I just bought one and am having it rebuilt....They definitely took the notes from the many of us that have beaten the living Hell out of our machines. Breaking anything and everything that could be broken....That in which they have upgraded is for sure a plus and the exhaust is out for them if you haven't seen it yet (yes this was in August) though if you haven't seen it yet RJWC just released theirs. I will combat the 55" width....my Sportsman 1000 XP with the offset wheels is 54" and what I feel it really comes down to is that producing machines like this forces the hand on these states, provinces, etc...to open up trails to machines that are well beyond the development of machines in which the trails where previously based off from. Most of these rules/regulations were based off machines of the past and it is time for law-makers to get with the present time. I have felt the pain of being too wide on the trails a few times....one particular moment was up in Canada when I couldn't fit past some gates on a awesome section of trail. Is what it is but c'mon now it is 2019....time to get with it. lol. Good stuff as always though I have been behind on watching always get a laugh and enjoyment out of the videos 🤘
i own both can am and scrambler i prefer the scrambler all day way more fun to rip and a lot more stability i ride 65 in trails tho

After wheels, tires and spacers, I think my 750 King Quad is around 51-52” wide. I get around here in WV pretty well.
Polaris built the machine for Canadian riders as that’s %50 of the market. 55” travel is something that caught my eye and makes me want the machine! Thing won’t be a beast and should really handle well!
Thanks for the feedback! I get how it really has some wanting it. After talking with so many people and giving this way more thought, I understand the want is out there. However, I still stick by the fact I think Polaris should have made the 50" model, then made the "S" model as an additional model. That way sooo many riders that have been waiting for the Scrambler 1000 to return, would still be able to get it at the 50" option. Much like they already do for the RZR.
I agree with you though, this thing is absolutely going to be a beast!
Simply put, it's not the machine for you, there's still a bunch of 48" Polaris ATV's being offered. Anywhere we ride, (TN, WV, NC, SC, FL) this machine is a welcome addition to the line up, pull into Busco Beach ATV any weekend and see trailerloads of 55-72" ATV's being unloaded, Ride Windrock in TN and this is an ATV capable of the steep and off camber trails there. So Thanks Polaris for having your pulse on the National scene. :)
Bigger is better, trail systems will lift the width restriction currently in place soon. They are rules laid out 2 decades ago!
Polaris, It’s not a quad anymore, it’s a single seat Razor without the roll cage, totally useless on the tight wooded trails here in PA. And $15k??? I would just purchase a Razor if I wanted something that big

Correct, we also ride the Allegheny National Forest in northern Pa, they only allow 50” machines, class 1 only, so this thing wouldn’t work there either, but PoLaris might have the political power to get the rules changed?? Wait and see???

They should offer both a 48" XP 1000 and the 1000 S model. I ride in places with 50" gates. The S would be almost useless to me.
Completely agree with you here! I keep getting comments that say something like "its an ATV, just get over the obstacle and ride the trail". Not only do I not want to promote breaking the law, I have rode many trails where they are really good at setting it up so that you cannot get a wide machine onto the trail even if you wanted to.

The picture you showed of the Renegade, showed it had a 51" stance. That means it's over the 50" and under, Class one trail. So the Renegade and Scrambler fall in the same category, right ?
Best machine ever made. Ive owned 2 renegade 1000xxc n this scrambler s walks on the renegades.

This is an easy fix on the width. Loosing 2.5” per side that is a just a matter of changing to 14”wheel with a -2.5 inset. Not trying bag on any of you worried about width but that’s a no brainer. Now some of you will reply with “its to expensive.” Here is how I look at it. If you can an afford 15K you can spend a few hundred bucks more.

This is actually nothing new to Polaris. When the Sportsman debuted with 14 inch rims, it was illegal in the state of WI and the state would not register those machines coming from the factory with 14 inch rims. It wasn't until like 2 years later that WI removed the 12 inch maximum rim restriction that they were officially allowed to be sold and registered in WI.
That's a great point man. I don't see the 50" restricted getting eased up as quickly though. That can involve wishing trails and other issues....all of which creates a multitude of issues.
I will also admit, I love rising some of the more narrow, barely 50 inch wide trails. They are fun and a good mix up.
Ya, you are probably using the negative headline and commentary to get views. Sure its a youtube tactic that gets you views but its simply nonsense. SxS have made trails across this country wider. More and more people ride SxS. I own both the Maverick X3 XRS turbo and a Renegade 1000xxc quad. I love them both. My Renegade wont hang with the Maverick in the deep whoops and washboards of desert riding. I would love the new Scrambler because it has the goods to stay up with the SxS. My only concern is power to weight ratio. It has the same horsepower as my Renegade but weighs 160 pounds more. Still want to try one though. Polaris nailed it out of the park.
I debated the 60" vs 50" sxs when I purchased my rzr. Ended up with a 60" 900s and I'm glad I did it. I'm in Ohio and ride mostly PA WV Tenn Virginia. All those places are good to go for 60". I thought 60" would be too big on the woods too but unless it's heavily wooded it's fine. I mean by heavily wooded is literally no trail! Most riding I have done is old logging roads mining area and designated atv parks that all accept 60 or larger machines. I ride with yxz's x3's and talons too which are all wider then my 900s. Any narrower and you're bouncing in the big boy's ruts and that sucks

Idk. I didn't hear anything I didn't like . I still have a hard-on for the renegade ... But I like the wide stance. With the side by sides up and coming I think the trails will eventually grow a little wider.
Yea, they might...eventually. I still say I would have liked to see them release a Scrambler 1000, then release the "S" as an additional model if they want the wide stance. After all, they already have the 850 so it's not like adding a 1000 onto that same frame would be an insane modification.
I do see the appeal with the wider stance though.
It’s also much heavier with the same engine as previous years. The newest unit will actually be slower

The Hunter it’s not going to be slow, just slower than the previous model, certainly slower than the Can Am 1000’s

In Michigan we have a 2 class trail system, but I've never seen the 50" rule enforced. I always see larger machines on these trails, and I really think at this point the DNR just doesnt care. My thought is that If they want to enforce the rules, they should also maintain the trails like we pay them to do... and that's NOT being done on alot of trails.
That's interesting. THanks for your input, trix. I was actually looking at heading to the UP here soon to ride some trails as I have heard they are beautiful. When I looked them up I noticed almost all of them are class 1 trails, meaning the side by sides would be staying at home. I'm surprised the DNR does not seem to be enforcing them much (not that it means any of us should purposefully break the law of course). But it is definitely interesting. I wonder if they will soon change the law.
@@NavigateOffroad keep in mind, that although DNR isnt enforcing as often (I've never been busted) there are trails that will just be too narrow for a full sized sxs to go down. Also, there are a few trails with small bridges that will not accommodate larger vehicles.
@@NavigateOffroad and yes, there are some really pretty trails. The "kalkaska trail" is a great example this time of year when the trees are changing.
That trail is great because it utilizes snowmobile trails, and are interconnected to several other trail systems. You can literally go across the state on those trails.
It's also important to have a good map or gos, because it's easy to get lost back in the woods if your not in a familiar trail.
@@NavigateOffroad sorry for the multiple responses, but I keep thinking of more details! The UP has slightly different laws than the rest of the state. Basically in the UP you can ride anywhere unless posted. That's kind of the opposite of the lower peninsula, where you cant ride, unless its posted as part of a trail.
Also, most of the towns in the UP have economies mostly based in tourism, so they are very snowmobile/ATV friendly. As long as you have your stickers no one should bother you, even going down the side of the road (as long as it's not a state or federal highway)

I really want to get some MI rides in soon. Considering i'm only a few hours from the UP, its pretty shameful I haven't already! I have heard great things about MI trails over all. I think I am going o make it a commitment to get over there next summer....this winter I will probably go Sout over East, haha.

Widen the path or find another trail. All the features and dimensions are the reasons why I bought one. They are called improvements in advanced technology.

Then youll loose the ground clearance and long travel. They are all tied together, you cant have one without the other. You can still buy a scrambler 850 with traditional dimensions.
They adressed the width, they have 2 models, an 850 which is standard atv width, the 1000s have the 55. Personally i rip mountain terrain and the 55 witdth is way better, and we dont have width restrictions unless you get into the massive sxs, i have a 21 rzr xp1000 and its allowed everywhere

Your issue with the new Scrambler is valid if you live in an area where “vehicle width” is regulated......up in Canada I don’t think those regulations exist (at least not where I’ve personally ridden) 🤔🤷🏼♂️
If you want to, you can (legally) ride your ATV on a Dirtbikes Singletrack......of course, you’re going to (rightfully) piss off the Bike guys but you CAN legally do it, if you want to be an asshole 😂

Im amazed that people are more unhappy with the width and not the price. 15 grand for an atv is absolutely Ludacris. And I have spent some big money on toys in my life. I had a KTM 525xc and people were freaking about the price then. The money they are wanting for these off road machines is out of control. Its seriously driving me out of riding. 15 grand, lol. No way in hell. Its a nice machine but my god 15 grand?
i haven't watched the video yet but i couldn't buy it because it is too wide. Would be a constant issue since many of the trails we ride are tight on my piddly 400ex.

I found a 2018 last year right before the new 20 was released, I'm so glad I didn't get that super wide machine. It wouldn't fit in most of the trails I ride.

you can still fit in a 50" trail... its not like there's cement curbs stopping you from fitting in the trail. I might get tagged by a few branches but that's all.
Actually, Derek I have ridden a bunch of trails where my 50.5" Scrambler barely fits (as in the tires rub). Many trails around the Midwest that are designed for 50" machines have huge boulders and actual steel posts going into the ground to ensure larger riders can't get it. With trees and everything else, you simply can't get a larger machine down them.
Plus, not sure where you live but in many places I ride running into the DNR is normal, and they know which machines are allowed and not. Not to mention, the more laws disobeyed on the trails, the higher the ricks of getting them shut down. I'm all about getting more trails, not losing them brother.
Idaho has medal and concrete gates. It's very tight even for a 50inch machine.

Agree 1000% it’s badass no doubt all the tech and everything you get for the money but the width is a deal breaker. How are 4x4 xc guys supposed to race these? Most trails on XC courses I squeeze through on my 48” wide banshee.

I do feel Polaris knew what they where doing when they offered the scrambler and sportsman in what you would call the new 55” class. They are stepping up and out to those that ride in the sand, desert, wide open area’s that can pin it to win it so to speak.
Now I also feel like polaris screwed the pooch with the rest of us that like winding through trees, mountain trails and what not. Simple fix, offer them in both 48” and 55”. I have no problem giving up a little ground clearance, and travel.
You can still buy the 850 with traditional stance.
