  • WHITEOUT! Trucking Through A Blizzard In The Colorado Rockies! Pt. 1
First part of a two video series. After trying to head up to I-80 and finding it closed for the next 14 hours, I resorted to trying I-70 through the Colorado Rockies.
A winter storm of blowing snow caused not only slippery roads, but spontaneous white outs. This caused traffic to pile up and slow across the pass.
As traffic slowed the craziness ensued! Sliding vehicles and brutal winds. It was an experience I’ll never forget!

I'm retired now. But, back in the day. I kept 2 small wedges of timber (about 3 foot) in my side boxes. I would place them in front of the inside wheels of the tandems. Pull-up on them, then throw my chains on the outside tires of the tandem. Repeat process for the rest.
This acts as a make shift ramp to lift the wheel off of the ground. Have a great weekend and be safe out there. Have a very Merry- Merry and a Happy-Happy as well.

      At the 11:30 mark.
Another old school tip that you might consider. Carry a couple of gallons of Clorox bleach in the side box. A couple cups under the tires will allow you to grip traction on the icy surface.
🤔 Just be careful with it near your good clothes.

THAT is a good point! I was wondering that too. Is it bc FedEx handles time sensitive material such as mail??? However, speeding through the chaining, increases your chances of personal injury and missing a step during chain installation.

Hahah - get it done boss-lady!! I'm based out of Denver now, and every very now and then, I'll take a winter haul across the Rockies just to keep me on my toes. I always carry a big jug of salt/snow melt, and a bag of kitty litter for instances just like this. It will save you a WORLD of trouble. Also, I know it may not be possible as a company driver - but I can't recommend snow socks enough. They are easier to install and work much better than chains in my experience. Stay safe, and keep on trucking!

I work with several guys who commute over Snoqualmie pass every day at 70 to 100 miles each way every day, and a few years ago it was closed so many times that the guys probably wnded up missing close to 4 weeks worth of days between November and March due to not being able to get to work from the closures. Typically its not that bad but every few years we get snow storms that drop several feet at a time and the plows cant keep up.

I've been watching a lot of videos such as this along with a lot of offroad recovery videos as well. The more I watch, the more I'm convinced that you men and women in the U.S. have it far far tougher than just about anything we see here. At least anything I've ever seen and I've driven every desert in this country except for one and in very harsh and extreme conditions. Still no matter how tough I've ever had it, I see it even tougher here and with tougher people dealing with conditions that would have had me long giving up and going home to bed.
I have nothing but respect for the very hard working people I see in these clips and to be honest, its easy for me to see just why your country, despite all its ups and downs, is the great nation that it is. Its all the people who just do not back down or back away from that which just needs to be done. And along with this, I sure as heck love all the gear that you build too. Wish I could say a bit the same for where I live. Feb 19 2021.

Love to see you safe out there, that guy who passed on the right side of you was not okay just glad you didn’t get hurt. Not sure why CDOT was not plowing in formation, that tow plow (plow truck with a trailer) shouldn’t really be out there since you really can’t deploy it out there, the wing trucks should be enough. I’m just sad that I don’t think I’ll plow in the mountains this winter since I’ll be in the downtown area of Denver. Love your videos, stay safe and be careful out there.

Whoa...that was intense! Glad your safe! Winter is not a fun time of the year to drive in for anyone, but especially for truckers. A few weeks ago we actually got a major storm from Colorado("Colorado clipper") here in saskatchewan canada and have had major melting this past week making the roads pure ice and there were quite a few jack-knifed semi trucks all over...it was insane!! I have a high respect for truckers and applaude you all for fighting the elements in winter and you are such a wonderful person to help others out while trying to get yourself situated also and I really hope others learn from you to help each other out there on the road! You did such a great job handling the situation, keep being awesome and keep safe out there!!💕💕

Bad enough fighting with snow and ice then add a set of doubles to the mix and be unable to back up conveniently just adds to the mess. My hats off to you for enduring such conditions. Safe travels to you all.
