  • I loath using the world female or girl in any of my video titles, but unfortunately for this video I feel like it is important for other girls to find this. I rarely talk about the creepy people I have run into on the road or some of the questionable actions I've witnessed out here. I strive to remain safe and I hope you do the same, what ever gender you identify as. There are things you can't predict out here. Let me know if you would like a video on how I practice staying safe on the road.
For this vlog, it is my first of the year, and I am proud to keep putting these up. They aren't my best, but I am OTR currently and it has taken me 2 days to upload this! I have been going a bit insane. A day in the life of a truck driver is what most of my videos tend to be. If you would like more specific topics covered I am ALWAYS taking suggestions down in the comments below.
    Stay safe and keep trucking.

Trust your instincts! And call the cops if it happens again. I'm also a single female OTR truck driver. When you are alone at night for your 10-hour reset, take your seat belt and hook it through the armrest of your door and buckle it and then no one can open your door. And if they try to break your window, you can use pepper spray or whatever else you have on them.

As a woman who rides along with her boyfriend a fair amount, I've definitely had my fair share of scary walks through pilot parking lots and various "creative parking" scenarios at night. I'm lucky enough to pass as a man (despite being 5'5") with my short hair when I wear the right pair of jeans and a hoodie. Nothing bad has happened to me so far, but it's terrifying thinking about the things that could happen if I were to run into trouble. Stay safe out there y'all

She should get some protection that's legal in all 50 states, including CA and NY. A pepper spray gun, that looks like a pistol but sprays pepper spray packs instead of bullets, is a quick alternative. There's a company called Byrna. Having something that looks lethal is an option. It's unfortunate thatnowheree is safe for a truck driver. The truck profession is undervalued and overlooked. People are stupid. Stay safe by the mile

As a woman, i really depend on my dog for my safety. I always have him sit on the seat if I'm up front. I also leave my door open if I need to work outside the truck since he won't jump out unless i call him. I've put alot of time into training him and it has really paid off over the years. These days I have a nice dedicated route that let's me sleep on site at both ends so I haven't had any issues with weird people.

I see a lot of people talking about bear spray. Anyone going that route be sure you get the gel. Standard bear spray is a nightmare in a closed area, wind blowing toward you, if your dog is tangling with the person or another dog, it’s difficult to pin point. It gets everywhere.

I'm a 6'7" heavily built man and with all the crazy things going on only go to states that allow me to protect myself, which is why I keep it as local as possible in Idaho but go into Montana, Wyoming, and Utah. I give a thumbs up to all you ladies doing what you're doing out there alone but if you're getting tired of it I'd definitely look into local, I definitely make more take home being local than I have being away from home.

Congratulations on your decision to become a school bus driver. If there was one piece of advice I could give you is that never get caught up in the pressure of others.
Meaning, as example, coworkers or other drivers on the road trying to hustle. As an OTR and local big rig driver that was one thing I saw and many times myself experienced. As a school bus driver you probably won’t get too much if any of that, but just remember to take your time and be patient. Safety and pride come first. Follow and trust your training. Pretrip inspection is very important. If your coworker gets done faster who cares. Do what you do and be the best you can be.
Don’t get caught up in the hype.

So boys out there would think lady truck drivers are easy. I have to tell you that it does happen to men especially at truck stops you can put up all the stickers in the world but they still try. I am so glad you have a good dog with you. Don’t condemn all of us there are a lot of good men out there and are always willing to help. Hi Shelby from Australia 🇦🇺. I had a quad camera and had recorder installed in my truck and special purpose training trailer for both driving safety and security. The gear in the trailer was just under $500k, so you can see why it was needed. Some very sketchy nights parked at overnight spots in the outback. It also came with a duress button on the key fob that activated lights and siren. Safety first always . Cheers, Mike. 🇦🇺🐮🚜📡🧪🇦🇺

One thing I would like to suggest is to contact the store's/warehouse's security and let them know what is happening when a creepy guy shows up. I think it would help if their security team can do something, or they could call law enforcement because you feel unsafe & some unknown person is unnecessarily circling your truck. Who knows if that guy has done that there in the past or is habitually up to no good. Stay safe Shelby!! btw I have seen those flashy discs at restaurants when customers are waiting for a table to become available.

How do you know they are not in on the crime, or care about you......this canbe and sometimes is the case .....you are better off to record and fight your own battles, how can you trust the police are honest now a days.....do not let yourself get a false sense of security.....it is becoming a small war zone, and now with the scam involving the crooked brokers, you better get yourself loaded up for war and always be on your guard...careful planning and safe and defensive maneuvers by you are always helpful.....plan ahead, do not be a "dunderhead"......correct your planning strategy, always be prepared for anything, and always position yourself for a quick exit. Stock your truck with food ,water and supplies so you do not have to leave your truck if needed....pee bottles and crap buckets can be poured on your attacker if needed.....bear spray is very strong and some squirt 40 ft., your fire extinguisher can be useful as well.....use your head for something besides a hatrack.

Thanks for putting together such a great video. Dakota is a sweet heart of a dog, and obviously watches out for you. As far as the creepy guy is concerned, could you not just phone the cops and have them do a drive past to put your mind at rest? Stay safe out there.

When parking at your destination, you can get it all lined up & back up to the door. This protects your load & also puts you in a more discreet position, rather than sitting in the middle of the lot. Then in the morning all you have to do is pull forward a little bit for them to break the seal & open your doors. Be safe out there

it's hard as a female in the trucking industry, not to feel like all eyes are on you all the time (most of the time you're right, they are!), and that you have more reason to be fearful than the guys.
it doesn't make things any better, but I think more men have moments like this than you'd know as well. My husband and I own our own company and we both drive. (me not as much as him anymore, I mainly drive when our drivers are on vacation and stay local other than that). I know I'm very selective about where I'll stop for the night (to the point now where if I can't find somewhere I feel safe, I'll look for a decent motel with room to park the truck out front, and book a room), and although he doesn't say much about it, I see he's exactly the same selectiveness from him, and for the same reasons.
It's human nature to be aware of one's surroundings, men do it too, it comes from caveman days of having to be aware of predators, so don't think that you're alone in the world.
only other thing I have to say is, if you start to feel uneasy, start the truck up and bug out. whatever the consequences, it's just easier.

Glad you have Dakota with you. There are so many creeps out there. It’s to bad people just can’t leave other people alone. Here you are just doing your job. He was probably married with kids and he was out being a jerk. I would have called the cops and let them know he was casing you. At least they would have sent someone over and now they would know you were there and they could keep an eye on you or be close by. Well I must say another great video showing how things are out there for female drivers. Have a great day and please please stay safe. Happy trails and happy motoring.
