it would be kinda funny if a new edition dropped immediately after this video
99% chance of it dropping within a year, I reckon.
@@pronumeral1446 Possibly. Although next year is teh 40th anniversary of WHFB, and Old Worlds last article did specifically mention sculpting, painting and play testing....
I halfway expect it.
@@pronumeral1446 you wanna make a bet on that?
Next year's big release is Warhammer: the Old World.
What is there new that 10th Edition can bring?
This is just SpikyBitz, BoLS and Chaptermaster Valrak quoting each other in a rumour mill circle jerk...
@@Badgertron2009 And they have outright stated that Warhammer: the Old World is out next year.
Also W:tOW is set during the Time of the Three Emperors which is when Mordhiem was set. So I wouldn't be shocked to find out that 2024's big starter release is Mordhiem 2nd edition.
40K will probably get 2 or 3 'Seasons of War' before it gets 10th Edition
Just a little PSA, you can buy one of the Start Collecting boxes for the other Space Marine chapters (Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, etc.) and just not use the chapter upgrade bits.
These include different units, and are cheaper than buying them individually.
damn lol i didn't even think of that tbh
That's Original 40K Gangster thinking there!
@@DiscourseMinis New naïve player experience!
I also have spent over $1000 CAD in the past month building up my new army, returning to the hobby after a 10+ year absence lol. Glad to be back but, damn, I have a problem xD
Doesn't the Wolf one have a named guy as the HQ though?
500 dollars?! So what you bought like 3 boxes?
2 and a bottle of paint.
A start collecting box and a codex
I was going to say ...
What do you mean that's at least 1 and a half boxes
1 forgeworld model and the Stratagem cards
$500 dollars to get an army from scratch. That is a very high bar to entry for a new hobbyist. Plus the cost of paints, tools, and the cost of core rule books. This no doubt repells new players from joining and introduces a slow attrition where number of people leaving the hobby is higher than the number of new players joining.
Yeah James I 100% agree. This was way too much money for a "standard" game amount. I think I'll be doing a third video after the painting reflecting o nthe amount of time & effort required to get into Warhammer....
Yeah, 420 dollars JUST for the miniatures. Factor in roughly $5.00 per paint pot, a cheap brush for about 6 bucks, hobby nippers at 10, an exacto knife for 5, and then the faction/supplement rulebooks for 50-80, and you're probably looking somewhere around another 150 dollars on top of that.
Also, as a newplayer, if you fuck something up while putting it together or painting the models, is it byebye 420?
@@peste2574 Well. Even the worst of paintjobs can be stripped and redone provided you didn't, like, use tile paint or something. But screwing up the building process can be a real demotivator, like hacking off part of a model. Mistakes on that front hurt a lot more considering how much you paid for it.
@@brianhall4182 Good to know that about the paints!
As someone who has clumsy hands, the dangers of screwing up the model is a really big demotivator considering how expensive they are.
Guess I'll just stick with the games and books for now! (tho even old books are hard to come by... Really wish I could find the collection with Rylanor the Ancient story).
500 dollaridoos, whats that like now, 3 marines?
I'm sorry, D. The minute I saw the title and remembered the bet, I started giggling. Kudos to you for sticking with the bet.
Honestly, with this much money on the line, should we really be encouraging adhering to bets? It's just a bet. You can just go back on your word. No one will mind. Not in this economy.
Yes people would. One's word is supposed to mean something....
@@Bluecho4 your word is your bond.
@@ChrisKCook Counterpoint: Your word is just your word. It has no power, save what we give it.

Act like a snake. Live like a snake.
If you're willing to go firstborn, the new Horus Heresy Box has a lot of points worth of marines (and you can field the Spartan and Contemptor in 40k). With all the new HH stuff I'm building myself a Rogue Trader Edition style Crimson Fists army full of beakies.
Yeah, the Horus Heresy box, for as costly as it is, is effectively 2000 pts worth of Marines in 40K. It's why a lot of people bought the box.
100% but appears to be too late. Lol
@@Bluecho4 With 3rd party discounts it's like 306 CAD, which is peanuts for a 2000pt army.
I've thought of grabbing it just to expand my Night Lords army especially since the new upgrade sprue for them just got announced. But I've already got a sizeable army as is
Thanks Discord for making awesome content! I love how your videos aren’t just short click bait, but very thought out and unique.
I was there when you lost that bet and honestly - I love the content that this lost bet brought us.
Oof. I bought 2000 pt white scar army for 200USD by going with recasters and buying second hand on ebay. And I felt alota pain with that much. Really hope it works out to give you a good sense of accomplishment after it's done!
It'd be cool if you live streamed the painting session. I do enjoy watching the average Jane/Joe paint.
recast 4 lyfe
GW is not a good company, but I don't like recasters, or people that make 3d models that are exact replicas. There are a lot of people that make brilliant models, physical and 3d models. Recasters just leech off someone else's work.
@@mycatistypingthis5450 preach.
Plenty of second hand stuff and cool 3rd party stuff. You don't have to feed recaster leeches..
@@mycatistypingthis5450 I actively support recasters.
I always loved the lore of the Black Templars, especially the way they chain their weapons to themselves. That always struck a chord with me, as when I was in the light infantry, we did the same thing with just about everything we had with us. I wasn't playing 9th Edition at all, and hadn't played since the start of 7th, and some friends were asking when I would start playing again. I told them as soon as the Black Templars get a Codex, thinking for damn sure that would NEVER happen. Literally the next week, the new Codex supplement was announced. So, now I have a Black Templar army.
Hope you enjoy campaigning with them; I know I have!
Goodvon you gor honoring your word.
Funny, I've started a black templars army a fews weeks ago, with almost the same list as yours : Instead of the ol' Predator, I've bought the "new" land raider Proteus from Heresy. I'm enjoying the building and the painting so far ; BT are really fun to build and I think they will have an immense presence on the table top. I hope you will enjoy your SM army ;-)
I would have said to start with Horus Heresy Starter Box + some BT upgrade frames; add a box of heavy support upgrades ebay-off the left overs). Then add Grimaldus and look on eBay for the Judiciar or just kitbash one. And I think GW staff are going to notice a 3rd party character model, whether the call you out on it depends on how chill they are.
Yeah the 3rd party faux Space Marines tend to stick out like dogs balls...
Black Templars are awesome. I recommend listening to Helsreach audiobook while building and painting, then you may find love for them. Also, you can make those Extra Captains in Lieutenants or Sword Brethren (Veterans). Tip: If the models building configuration allow it, prime the shoulder pads in white prime, and the rest of the models in Black to save time. Good luck!
I also just started a space marine army, I was holding out to see what the new imperial guard tank would look like, im a big tank fan, I hate it so I ordered everything to build a space marine army just using the old Predators, Whirlwinds, Vindicators and Razorbacks as I think they are the best looking tanks available, planning on adding a load of battlefield stuff to them like extra fuel tanks, camo nets, fuel cans and ammo boxs etc. . Planning on using minimal infantry, just basic 5 man squads in the razorbacks for objective holding. . Going for a modern tank unit look, probably desert or urban camo, toying with urban digital camo.
Sounds awesome man, enjoy the process have a lot of fun!
Sounds like you might be going Iron Hands for your chapter. Grab iron father Feirros and prove how weak that fleash is.
Or... Play Raptors, the reasonable marines : contrasty olive drab on boneish base, drybrushed leadbelcher on black for anything metal and you're good to go :).
Or... Ultramarines but paint them like it's 1987.
Looking forward to your painting video!
Looking forward to the painting diaries!
I have troubles believing you didn't want those Space Bores :D You're just using us as an excuse
Discourse, painting 2K points worth of SM in a day is an even more wild bet than the infamous prediction gone wrong. Trust me, I'm a profes... ehm, I made a lot of mistakes.
Even with high speed techniques such as drybrushing and Contrast/Speedpaint/inks - BTW my current painting standard for non-unique minis - your arms, hands and eyes do NOT have the blessing of the Omnissiah, and the WILL fail you.
Omg! I remember when she made this bet during the 40k live event. Good for you sticking to your word and good luck (lots actually - you’re gonna need it) in seeing it through!
I feel your pain, been buying and painting for two weeks now and I feel like I’m only half way done.
They were not featured in Fire Warrior on PS2. The guard where the Imperium opponent of that one.
The first time i bought anything space marines was around 2680 dollars, thats before tax in Pittsburgh
The judiciar was one of the exclusive minis in the indomitus box (aka 9th edition box). You can get them for pretty cheap on places like EBay for 20 bucks.
Honestly can't wait fore the painting vid. I love hobbying vids
They are the original Templar colour scheme as in the Knights Templar of the crusades
Were there space marines in either of the Necromunda video games?
Since I’m new to your channel what are the other armies you’ve done
You should have painting vids for it all, too. Lol be fun to watch it all come together
will be recording the 24 hour build + paint session :D
I totally flashed back to the skits era when I heard that music playing during "The Plan". Not gonna lie, thought I was gonna see some tie-dye!
I’m surprised you didn’t get sword brethren but looking forward to your painting results
I don’t see a lot of comments saying this but the Marshall is a primaris captain with either the flamer or plasma and power sword or axe
If there's any one person who needs a 3d printer, it's you.
fairly positive she has one, has even done a bunch if videos on painting an army she printed from OPR.
Red Corsairs, chaos before they became chaos. The Tyrant of Badab/Huron Blackheart is my fav.
Are u gonna livestream the painting session?
I had no idea orks were so low on that list. They're my favorite
Great choice on adding an Inquisitor, good internal lore tension.
Ah yes, who could forget the timeless horror classic Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
Thank you for this video, I'm coming back to the hobby after 15 years off when I was in my teens and this was incredibly helpful for getting a new army. Still on the fence between Ravenwing Dark Angels and a Salamanders Successor chapter.
Also, I'm Northern Irish and it's great to hear a proper accent on CZcams 🤣
Seems a little high. might be cheaper to 2x the start collecting boxes depending on chapter and units then get a select few mini boxes and HQ units that is actually used with the chapter then anything else. Not all start collecting boxes are always the best bang for the buck however.
I recently bought a 2000 point Emperor’s Children army. Just the models, not counting the shoulder pads and sonic weapons, was $675.
But I didn’t know about a lot of these discount websites and am paying that whole America tax.
Hey, great video. Did you know when you're against a white background on the greenscreen in certain shots, you appear transparent like a ghost? for example, at 16:13
I did this once . I would say I was a marine hater who bought Eldar in buckets then Tyranids ,Necrons and a car boot sale Dark Eldar . Then it happened another car boot sale and there they were unpainted an old style army box when it meant an army ,it also included a extra Vindicator and extra jump pack squad for £50 . Damn I broke my pledge to myself to never play marines . Then 3 more added boxes and 2 commanders and there was an army that won battles . It still lacked the sleek feel of Eldar or savagery of Tyranids
DELICIOUS RESIN SHOTS! DOWN IN ONE! DOWN IN ONE!!
So the Fluorescent Orange Black Templar?! Excellent choice, the enemy will never see you coming! I would have gone Dark Angels, all the Plus points you said for Black Templars are shared with Dark Angels :-D
have you checked out the *black templars castellan* ? Reimagined from the venerable original artwork, this guy is a beast (and in my personal opinion beats the judiciar by a mile lookswise)
Heh you got less hover tanks then I expected, I while I started picking up genestealers (thanks to temptations and another tber pointing out some discounts going round and getting my hands on the last pick) and was pleased to see I didn't get a bunch of mangos left and right. And then I got sick and barely painted anything other then finishing off what I was close to and currently finishing off what I started and a character, but sleeping for most of the day is nice and not.
Australian here, yeah the prices here are absolutely awful. I can’t afford enough to really build armies so occasionally I just grab a model when I can afford it and paint it up.
Brilliant video as ever. An excellent account of the brutal experience of becoming a GW customer.
The movie "Something Wicked This Way Comes" is my favorite this time of year.
Damn, I'm looking forward to the painting bananza
i am not lol!
Hi Discourse.
Do you have any Necron units/bits you don’t want?
You should turn this into a series: “buying the army, so you don’t have to”.
what one box set did you buy :)
Black templars were always my favourite too, they are all mental lmao. Auspex Tactics had really good videos on combat patrols you can use for black templars. Pretty sure the Dark angels one and the blood angels one had some good units and obviously the black templars one itself lmao. Best to double check though, been a while since I watched it. If you making your own chapter you can use librarians too lmao, so can probably use all the models you get from it.
Combat Patrols from other chapters were already mentioned, but you could have tracked down an Indomitus Box somewhere I think.
You pay only a little more than for the "Heroes of the chapter"-scam, while getting more stuff and a Necron army to flip.
To be honest I didn't even think of combat patrols for other chapters! I'm used to only getting a single combat patrol option for my faction :D
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
I will say the Black Templars supplement book has some fun stuff!
Is that with or without paint?
As someone who collects Warhammer in New Zealand (the prices here are either the same as or worse than that of Australia) this hurt my wallet to watch but I can’t wait to see the final completed army
I don’t think they are going to let you play in stores much longer.
No doubt you'll have them all painted up and ready before I ever get a single one of my battlemechs painted.
Not running the second chaplain ?!? Heresy !!!!
If I was gonna do a space marine army itd probably be the salamanders or aurora marines cause I like that theyre pretty kind marines in the setting. Also the expense is why i want only 1 40k army lol. The rest will be kill team.
Hello darling. I just couldn't believe the headline - Space Marines - toi?
Don't worry about hover vehicles. All marine vehicles outside of dreads are useless.
PLEASE! magnetize the tank and redemtor. Pretty easy and gives you more options without much more cost. Great vid. I went to hard on my iron hands and now have like 5k+ points. At least my fleash isn't weak.
Space Marines; Yuppie Spawn of The Emperor.
Iron Hands deserve more love. Fun fact back in like 2009 I thought about starting IH when I read some of their lore, my plan was to run them using SW rules because I wanted Melee and the unique wolves chapter structure seemed a close enough match to old IH. So when I finally started now, I got Indomitus and BT box, and planned to either run as BT or the IH Whirl wind successors.
But uh First Born supremecy. True Marines.
did you use your affiliate link?
Sooo, my first army was imperial knights....
Wouldn’t a Horus heresy box get a old school marine set close to the point value?
I was able to get the black Templar army box on Amazon for $97 a few months ago. Heads up!
I should have just watched the hole video…..
I bought three Templar boxes (launch) for 280$ total.
Good luck D. with painting your space marines. You proved to me why i am hesitant to get back in 40k. As a blood angel/mordian iron guard player i need a lot of books just to get up to date with the rules. But it's D. Work that made me look and my army's and started to paint the projects i never finished. With space marines i always loved the blood angels and the legion of the damned but to get my space marines is gonna cost me a lot probably somewhere a round 500 euro's and i am not sure if i want to spend that much.
Yes, a new brother joins the crusade
10:53 guest appearance :D
Pretty sure that Mechanicus did NOT include SM
Poor lass, & I can't help but wonder if the figure count involved hits double figures
Never collected Space Marines? This almost sounds like... Heresy 🤔
For a quick second I considered starting a 40K army, a very quick second.... It started around the time the Octarius box was released as I was really turned onto the Veteran Guardsmen. I didn't want to play generic space marines, and I really liked the lore around the Death Korp of Krieg, "Absolute badasses!" Not wanting to buy the Octarius box as I didn't want the Orks, and I figured I looked into the Death Korps only to find that only the veteran guardsmen were available. Recalling that I'd seen more Death Korps models I thought maybe the army had been discontinued. I was enlightened, and directed to the Forge World website. This is where my desire to buy into the Death Korps, and 40K in general quickly faded away. I decided to buy into AoS instead, and got an A-Elf starter box. Painting that now, and won't buy into anything until 1.6 million years from now when I finish Eltharion. This is the estimated amount of time I figure I'll need to paint all this detail, could be longer.
Dark Angels box would have been a great addition
You could have also just of gotten the Horus heresy box set lol. Just under 2k points in 1 box
Why hasnt anyone made a 3d printed "kit" to add tracks or wheels to the primaris vehicles?? That would be so cool.
Still waiting on that 9th Ed Astra Militarum before I buy a damn thing.
I spent 450+ in Adeptus Custodes to start them so I feel ya, lol.
With the ' balance data slate' that's come out your army will probably be out of date.
Iron hands Have or used to (they get nerfed hard in 10th Im sure) have lots of buffs in games and cool lore!
The Rule of Cool is good way to start.
That upgrade sprue is dope.
Discourse was the little kid cheering on CM Punk vs Cena. Respect.
That would get you a whole 10 man squad in New Zealand
i'm thinking of doing a successor chapter at some point. mainly thinking either Wolfspears, Black Vipers or Dark Krakens
Dark kraken look cool
I really want to hear these details...
I would have started with an indomitus starter box
I went with the conquest and imperium magazines. Many marines 3rd of the price.
that's very long term
@@DiscourseMinis absolutely, I went the imperium route because im a college student. I can drop 20 dollars a week max, so this way I can try to collect my two favorite armies, blood angels and necrons slowly so I can enjoy hobbying while also collecting terrain and two full armies
Oh Discorse! Now I'm going to have to support you on Patreon. Just so you can afford to paint them.
always appreciated!
@@DiscourseMinis Play them once and then auction them off. Be sure to make a video about the auction.
