For the record. The story is by the Norwegian author Thorbjørn Egner. He has also written stories like Kardemommeby and The animals of "hakkebakkeskogen" (The titles are lost in translation ;) )
The animated movie is by the filmmaker Ivo Caprino. He has made animated stories of this, of Flåklypa Grand Prix (I think he is the author as well on that one, ) and several Norwegian Fairytales. You might think the quality is bad, but these movies were made over 30 years ago!
Was browsing ...Grand Prix, and come upon this clip. I't really fun to see it again (even though I watched it in Norwegian).
But, it scared the sh*t out of me when I was a little kid, and my mother used it for was it was worth... Don't have to mention that I used to brush my teeth every day, do I :)
This gave me nightmares for several weeks. :c

I love the book read it when I was a little girl in Denmark have taught my kids and now my grandkids about Karius and Baktus :)

I checked it out dear brother but the least expensive used book was $50 a little steep for my budget now :-( but I did get the English version of robbers of Kardamomme town at a good price +Astrid Lindgren book Children from noise Village.

There is the german orihinal to be found around here, but this english version is much nicer than the german one, to me as german. But, 69 today, I'm remembering as we pupils watched it in primary school, being five or six years young. And it worked to me, I'm posessing all of them still. Brush' em brother!;o}

Karius og baktus er bedre på norsk ja jeg elskwrr dem mer enn sjokolade og karius og baktus trenger masse sjokolade for å kunne leve her. Jeg vil ikke at de skal flytte bort fra min munn. Jeg mista akkurat en tann, og det kommer en ny som er mye bedre og større fordi jeg vil at Karius og Baktus bare skal ha det beste.

Flåklypa (Pinchcliffe) was released in 1975 and Veslefrikk med fela (Frick with the fiddle) was made in 1952. All the other shortfilms was made in the 60ies I think.
