    I love the KM3s - siped they are the best all around tire I have ever run. I run them on my hummer H3 and Zr2 bison . When my Kendra MTs on my Tundra wear out she will get these shoes as well. All three trucks have front and rear lockers and are run in Wyoming’s roughest off road trails

    Thanks for this excellent review. One interesting benefit I've noticed with all 4 sets of BF Goodrich tires that I've installed on our vehicles (KO2, two Advantage T/As, KM3) were that none of them required any balancing. I hand mounted each tire, then started driving, without even initial balancing. The KO2's and one set of Advantage T/A's had a slight vibration above 85mph, but that smoothed out after 3000 miles. So they still have no weights. All of our cars routinely went up to 90mph without any tire vibration at all ! It is quite incredible Goodrich is able to achieve that with so many different types of tires.

    I for one do appreciate the real world experience reviews. I’m not going to get 50k worth of experience in the next three years, so your wisdom is much appreciated. We happen to be running 32” Falken A/T3W for Colorado / Utah overlanding with great results. As you said, AT’s seem to be the sweet spot for overlanding where we generally have a mix of pavement, graded dirt, rutted dirt, and snow. Thanks again for the effort.

    Interesting perspective on a purchase I am considering for my 79series land cruiser. I have run Bridgestone Dueller At,s for 25 000km now and they still look fairly good after heavy use and towing.
    It does not matter in some mud conditions you just have to suck it up and dig, winch rinse and repeat.
    I have had trips in the far north of Australia not long after the last of the Monsoonal rains and it has been that muddy I have struggled to do 10km in one day in some bad areas, Talk about soul destroying!

    Thanks for this video, I have been looking for info about km3s and ko2. I watched a video and wanted the MTs then another one and wanted the ATs; but your video made me decide for the KO2s!! You said what I needed to hear since, where I live (center-north of Chile), the type of mud would probably stick to any type of tire (clay sort-of mud); so, I would benefit from the advantages in highway, wet roads and sand of the ATs!

    Good info man. I've (almost) run standard size BFG AT's on everything and just have no need to change. Our last set of KO2's wore out pretty quickly but that was on the roughest roads, relatively high speeds and a heavy load. 50k MILES is amazing with the driving you do.
    I think I'm going to go with something different next time, just for some variety.

    • @DirtSunrise
      @DirtSunrise  Před 4 lety +1

      I remember looking at how chewed up your KO2's were. It's definitely weighing on which way to go this time. I realized how expensive different brands are. Like in Europe I saw a thread on how Toyos were way cheaper than BFG. Here it's the inverse where Toyos are outrageous and BFG's are cheaper by a lot.
      Coopers are big in AU right? We traveled with a guy with a set and they lasted a LONG time, but when he switched to BFG's recently he said they were quieter and the ride was noticeably softer. Which could mean good and bad things. Haha
      I'll try whichever ones sponsor us or I may just go back to K02's again.

    We have tried the Michelin 9.00r16 (36.1") but they're to heavy and noisy.

      Thanks Marcio! Although I love the ground clearance of the 315's I agree, they are too wide. We recently switched to 255/85 tires and I'm enjoying them. I do wish someone made a 34" tall skinny tire for 16" wheels.
      I've heard similar comments about the XZL's. We can't easily get them here, but they are a great size.

      The 255/85 must be interesting... They should have traction in some terrains.. and more available engine power due less rotational weight...

    While the Baja race support doesn't guarantee any tires specific performance, the reason the pit service at races is informative is because it indicates their willingness to put in the effort to produce a top performing product, and shows good leadership at the higher levels, which does in fact make or break a company in time. BFG's been owned by Michelin since 1990.

I've been shopping for replacements, and found a set of like-new KM3's (four of them) for $500. So (God willing) I'll pick them up tomorrow for the rig and run them until they die. And then I'll probably go back to the KO2's or some Falken Wildpeak AT3's (since they are comparable in strength, durability, and grip) but with 5K more miles of warranty, and 2/16ths more tread when new... for roughly $40 less/tire than the BF Goodrich K02s.)

I’m tired of the MT noise and it seems like the only place the KO2’s don’t shine is greasy clay mud but as you pointed out all tires suck in that stuff except something like super swappers but I’m definitely not running those. KO2’s are about 300$ cheaper for a set of 5 than the KM’s also.

    I have had two sets of BFG AT's chunk out and have their cold weather and snow performance fall off of a cliff as they aged. While this is true to some degree of all tires My BFGs had worse traction then blah all seasons that were twice as old in literal A/B testing in the same weather on the same vehicle. Doesn't seem to be isolated for people living in 4 season states either, or at least we notice it more in those environments and I don't hear the same with the MT either. I am pretty happy with my Cooper ST Maxx's and I Think the AT hybrid market is where its at.
    I agree that tire tech has come along way and you are pretty safe with any top tier tire. But no more BFG's AT's for me. Never experienced worse traction in snow than a three year old BFG AT. Worse than rock hard compound Michelin rally tires not meant to be ran under temps in the 40's even. Something about that particular model and their compound strategy is not for me.

    Thanks for putting this video together. Very helpful. What can you say about narrower vs wider tires? Are there certain characteristics that favor a wider tire (~315 range)? The reason I ask is that I've been looking to replace the tires on my 80 and someone recommended I go with a narrower 255/80/17 set of tires. What are your thoughts on this subject?

    • @DirtSunrise
      @DirtSunrise  Před 4 lety +2

      Thanks, If I could get a KO2 in roughly a 35" height, but closer to 11" wide, I'd buy it. (There are some options in racing non-dot legal tires or tires I don't like, but no options for this I like)
      Like anything both wider and skinny tires have their strengths and draw backs, but overall for Overland I like narrower tires. The majority of tread area increase when you air down comes from the tire elongating and not getting any wider so a skinny tall tire can nearly match the surface area of a wider tire. If you're bored you can do an ink blot test on your tires at different psi and watch the tread area grow. Also, a narrower tire will be easier on your power steering and give you better... or less poor mileage.
      The negatives of the tire you mentioned would be the lower volume of the tire. So, less effective absorption of bumps, meaning the tire wouldn't act as a component of your suspension as much. Also, in situations where flotation is your number one goal a tire on a larger wheel that is skinnier and less tall (less tire internal volume), you just wont get the flotation of a bigger volume time.

Should I use this heavy but great ‘skinny’ 37” Offroad tire, or change it to a new set of more wider 12.5R17 - 37” tire from BF Goodrich, like the Mud Terrain KM3? • @DirtSunrise
      @DirtSunrise  Před 2 lety

      I think for pure offroad and slow travel the XZL is great. Very tough tire. Here in the states people like the more modern style BFG/Cooper/Toyo etc tires because they ride really smooth at higher speeds and last a long time. These more modern tires are still really tough, but definitely second to the XZL.

      Hey there,
      Mostly it was years of saving. Once we left we fly home to work for a few months until we have enough to continue. On the road we do whatever remote work or consulting we can and the videos provide a couple gas tank fill ups a month too.
      Yes, statistically it's safer in the countries we were in than the states. As far as the feel, it's generally poorer countries so it doesn't always "feel" safe, but in our experience and others it is.
      There are thousands of other travelers from countries all over the world to meet as you travel as well so you're never alone.
      Cheers,

    I am running a 2022 jeep Mojave. And was going to switch from my falken wild peak at3 to the KO2. Two questions
    1). Any thoughts about that decision?
    2). When I go off-road, I’d like to run sand beaches on the Texas gulf coast hard (35mph+) in the softer sand and have been airing down on my wild peaks to about 15 pounds. If I buy K02 do you recommend a C class tire or an e class tire and does the airing down differ for those two tires?

    • @DirtSunrise
      @DirtSunrise  Před rokem +1

      I think the Falkens have come a long way and are a great tire. I do prefer the KO2's, but they're similar.
      A C class tire will splay out and grow a larger footprint easier than an E, but a softer more pliable tire can sometimes unseat from the bead a bit more easily. If you go C go a bit higher on the PSI at first to see how it acts in the sand and go from there. My guess is about 18psi will feel like 15 with E's. Then you can go further if you need to.

    First time I watch one of your videos and definitely looks like you know what you are talking about. I live in Baja, and Im building a mild/capable Bronco prerunner. For this kind of terrain, what tires would you recommend? Guessing is kinda similar to Sonora. Toyo MTs and this KM3 were my first two options, but I would like your opinion for sure. Thanks and keep the videos going man!

      Cheers, for all the beaches and silt beds I'd go AT's, but when it rains the KM3's would be nice! We spend a lot of time on the beach so I default to the KO2'S

    • @DirtSunrise
      @DirtSunrise  Před rokem

      In my experience not great, but these have a lot of siping so they work better than any previous BFG mud terrain in snow. If your talking powder snow wheeling Mt's do pretty well.
