Great seeing Martin choose Thin Lizzy as his favourite group. For me Philip Lynott was the coolest rock star ever to draw breath. I visited his grave at Howth, Dublin in 2021.
He should get along well with Butch Jones, they both have the same favorite band
Seen him at the BBC TV centre in West London. I gave him a 5pence in exchange for 10 pence to make a phone call. Tall fella as I remember.
Yeah, that was a surprise to me. They're my #1 as well.
Phil certainly had that coolness factor down perfect, didn't he! Him and John Kay, and maybe Jim Morrison, were the coolest rock stars ever.

Absolutely great podcast. I grew up on the Jam, the Stranglers and punk. The Jam's music just doesn't age. I've been listening to Paul Weller - modern classics a lot recently. One of the all time great songwriters.

Love the channel, big respect for both of you guys, and I own quite a few(at least 10-15) of Martinâs books, and I love the fact that amongst the heavy rock stuff, like me, he loves the new wave tinged punk stuff. I was floored to see he has The Jam in his top 10âŠ.they are in my top 20. XTC, Clash, Thin LizzyâŠ.love it. Great list Martin.
My top 10 criteria has more to do with the impact they made on me vs if I like a high percentage of their catalog. For example, KISS and Cheap Trick have large catalogs and the 80s and later period albums donât hold up as much as the earlier stuff for me, but they made such an impact on me as a kid from 76-83, they will always be my #1 and 2 respectively. Hereâs my list in âlooseâ order with some bubbling under bands as well, because I could easily do a top 40 lol
1-KISS
2- Cheap Trick
3-Van Halen
4-AC/DC

Conception is an interesting choice.
Back in my high school days (in the 80âs) my top ten list was as follows:
1. The Sweet
2. Styx
3. Nazareth
4. Deep Purple
5. Aerosmith
6. Queen
7. Judas Priest
8. Iron Maiden
9. Black Sabbath
10. Scorpions
Most of these bands remain because of sentimental reason (and because theyâre awesome as well). But 40 years later I would ad bands like Symphony X, Dream Theater, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Early Genesis, Helloween, Van Halen. Some of these bands I just came late to the party! Thanks to Sea of Tranquility for broadening my horizons.
Some different choices. I like the Aerosmith pick!
Martin would like Ac/DC they're just the kind of SHIT he would like.
Great informative entertainment as ever guys đ my top 10 in no particular order -

I share the love for many of your choices! My list:
1. Iron Maiden: Unthreatened nr 1. Aside from their 90s albums, which I don't like that much, I consider them to have a flawless discography.
2. Judas Priest: Unthreatened nr 2. They have a handful of albums that aren't that strong (Nostradamus is NOT one of them!), but their importance to me is hard to deny and most of their albums are great!
3. Black Sabbath: They have always been a top 5 band for me, but the Tony Martin albums have helped them to take the 3rd place.
4. Rush: Rush have risen a lot for me in recent times. It's my go to if I'm need of some sophisticated, thoughtful music.
5. Dream Theater: The only band that have been able to threaten Maiden for the first place. I've calmed down to them in recent times though. Still adore them!
6. Genesis: Probably my favorite band if you only take the peak period into consideration. The 80s albums (Abacab onwards) lower them on the list.
7. Opeth: I'm hit or miss on their progressive rock albums, but their mid-period is unparalleled IMO.
8. AC/DC: Pure nostalgia. They have been a constant in my life and I always go to them if I'm in need of something fun and uplifting.
9. Pink Floyd: There is something magical about their peak period that few bands can match IMO. I can see them rise on the list, but Ummagumma and the post-Waters albums hold them back.
10. Metallica: Pure nostalgia. I can see them leave the list sooner or later, but the importance of their first 4 albums holds them on the list for me.
I'm still young though, and I'm only in the initial phase of my musical journey. There are a lot of bands that I can see appear on the list with time. Some of these bands are Jethro Tull, Megadeth, Deep Purple, King Crimson, Thin Lizzy, Motörhead and Uriah Heep.
Today it's
10. Queensryche
9. Deep Purple
8. Queen
7. Van Halen
6. Black Sabbath
5. AC/DC
4. Rush
3. Led Zeppelin
2. Iron Maiden
1. Pink Floyd
Great list, i love all those bands too
Your list is my favorite list so far not that I have same list just a very solid list
10- Suicidal Tendencies, 9-Soundgarden, 8-U2, 7-Triumph, 6-Muse, 5-Dream Theater, 4-Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, 3-Rush, 2-Pink Floyd, 1-Queen
Seriously? Queen with their 80's output? 70's - god yes, without a doubt, but 80's?
Good to see Muse in theređ
Great show guys! Hard to put in any particular order But number 1...the band remains the same

5. Thin Lizzy
6. UFO
7. Budgie

Great list....Whitesnake would probably be number 11 for me
If Iâm not mistaken, in Martinâs Collectorâs Guide series for each decade, Deep Purple is the only band that has at least one album rated a 10 in every book.
My top 10 has not changed too much... only the order.
1) Genesis ( i like all the different lead singers brought something unique to the sound that cool prog and even the pop stuff)
2)Pink Floyd (At first I thought Syd Barrett was mad... but he was quite the influence to the bands sound.)
3) Beatles (how can anyone not have them somewhere in the top 10... the most influential band in rock history.)
4)Led Zeppelin (The best combo of hard rock blues and folk music. Supreme musicianship.)
5)Rush (The screaming seventies material was perfection... the later material not as good but still great.)
6)Black Sabbath (the 1st two albums were a great 1 2 punch of doom metal)
7)Deep Purple (Amazing musicianship and one of the greatest Rock lead vocalist's in Ian Gillan.)
8)The Doors (Another great example of a band playing Rock and Blues with their own unique style.)
9) Jimi Hendrix (Incredible amount of output in such a small span of time)
10) Creedance Clearwater Revival (Another great Band with that unique sound.)

The Sweet
Styx
Journey
Santana
Grand Funk Railroad
Judas Priest
Megadeth

Jethro Tull
Yeah, they are all great. I would add Kansas and Uriah Heep at your list.
Fun episode, Martin always with the cool surprises -- The Jam! For my 6 album run piece, they were handicapped by This is the Modern World and The Gift, but their last album has grown on me enough to get 'em in the top 30. I haven't done a best band piece since I ranked 400+ best artists of the 20th Century back in 2000! I think it's almost necessary to do a separate list for 21st century bands, cuz it's hard to compete with the godzillas of the 60s-80s. Here's what I came up with now:
1. Black Sabbath
2. Iron Maiden
3. The Beatles
4. Rush
5. Iggy Pop & The Stooges
5. David Bowie
7. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band

You two are the same age as me. This was a fun discussion as I could see myself having a similar one with my high school buddies. I had a friend who liked the same artists but we were polar opposites as to album and song choices. I find the same with many of your choices. We agree on the bands, not always on what their best work was. Which makes for good discussion. BTW the new haircut looks good Pete.
