- Far above anything else is spectral purity. When setting up for this test, I saw that when trying to drive the hermes harder into the Texas star, this caused a tremendous amount of IMD splatter. It still sounded fine in my A station receiver, but the signal was absolutely trashed. Although the Hermes output into the Texas star was extremely low, this produced a beautiful pin stripe brick wall display on my A station waterfall. Another reason I kept the drive level down is that after 5 minutes of key down, the Texas star got close to melt down temperature lol. Pretty darn good for a $460 radio and free software!
Nice modulation study! I, too, have an amateur music studio meets amateur radio station.

Wow! Great example, Im curious are you using Pure Signal from the Hermes?
Hey bud. Well, yes and no. Although I had pure signal activated, I did not have the feedback loop in place from the amplifier back to the Hermes which is another reason I had to keep the RF drive level out of the Hermes so low in order to give the Texas star the best chance of being clean. In upcoming AM experiments I want to explore how pure signal reacts to high modulation percentages, 120% positive peaks and above, before brick wall blowout. In those experiments I'll include my REA (Radio Engineering Associates) modulation monitor display. Lots of cool videos to come. Thanks for stopping by Art.
Question.. your mic goes into a preamp. Which also allows you to connect to computer? Something similar to the scarlet? Then once in the pc your only using cakewalk by bandlab? I've only used behringer gear. Never used pc daw plugin thingys..
So mic going to preamp, that allows you to connect to pc, then pc runs cakewalk and all processing... then that's sent out a rca on computer and that goes into the mcjack of the hermes? Do you turn up the preamp before the computer? Is the audio coming out the pc mic level? I'm trying to fit all my questions in.. sorry if this is confusing. Finally, the hermes don't come with mic jack so the companion board is required to do this correct? I appreciate all your responses and look forward to your help and advice.
I've tried rack gear with anytone and it's just not what I want. This here is miles ahead and is the direction I'm heading in.
No problem at all with the questions. The Focusrite interface box is what I use to connect to the computer. My Cloudlifter mic preamp is optional. I use this to bump up the mic signal level before the Focusrite. So, my chain is mic into Cloudlifter, then cloudlifter into Focusrite, then Focusrite into computer. Once in my PC, Cakewalk is my only audio processing and I tell Cakewalk to send its audio out to speakers out, which is the headphone jack on my mini computer. This audio level is considered line level and not mic level. For this next part the companion board is needed. Coming out of the mini computer headphone jack, I use a 1/8" stereo male to 1/8" stereo male cable to connect to the mic input on the Hermes. One would think that sending line level audio into a mic input would overload the mic input but in this case it's not that bad if you keep the audio level low. In Thetis click the Setup tab, then click Transmit tab and then make sure to uncheck the 20dB mic boost box. Once again, no problem with all of the questions. I was asking the same a while ago and I still find myself asking questions. Maybe I'll do another video on the setup, computer settings, Thetis settings, and Cakewalk settings.

So when you use the RE microphone how are you getting that audio into cake? And then do you still run the headphone jack on computer to mic jack on the hermes or? I have a hermes lite but trying to figure out the best way. Thanks for your time!!
Hey there rockhaller. I use the Focusrite Scarlett solo interface box. Some folks call it a sound card, but I call it an interface box. I run my RE320 into the Focusrite box with a standard XLR mic cable, then the Focusrite is connected to my computer with a USB type C to USB A cable. And yes, I route my cakewalk audio out of the headphone jack on the computer to the mic input on the Hermes. If you do it this way, don't for get to go to the Transmit tab in Thetis and uncheck the 20dB Mic Boost. Everybody has their own ways of doing it and for what I do up here, it works well for me.

@KP68videogates you answered most of my questions here haha. Disregard my other comment.. do you pump up with the scarlet before going to pc? Can it hurt the pc if you have preamp turned up to much? Finally after cakewalk is the audio line level like it is in rack gear? Or does it come out the pc mic level?
