- Taking a “statin” cholesterol drug? Should you be on CoQ10 too? Dr. Serraiocco (Board certified in Internal Medicine & Integrative Medicine) presents a short and practical mini-medical lecture demonstrating WHY it’s important for all “statin” users to consider a CoQ10 supplement, and HOW to take it properly (including recommended brands and dosages). She gives examples from real patient cases, and reviews how to use CoQ10 lab testing as a guide.

I have seen dozens of Q10/statin presentations and have interacted with many of the experts. This may well be the best, most credible, down-to-earth, easy-to-understand presentation on this topic!
That means a lot, coming from you then. Thank you 2Q2Q.
I have been trying to get my husband to start coq10. He is getting muscle pain and tiredness. I have passed him lots of previous videos , with no effect.
I hope this video, with simple explanation of how statins and coq10 interact, make him start coq10.
Thank you, excellent video.

@@ginaserraioccomd974 just went out and got some CoQ10, I'll try 150mg a day for a while. My cocktail at the moment is 20mg escitalopram (18months in), 10mg rosuvastatin (one week in, for high, 500, triglycerides) and I've added Methylsulfonylmethane/MSM 1/4 tsp, and the CoQ10 (Ubidecarenone).
Hopefully everything will balance :)
Hi Gina, love your passion. I’ve been on a statin for just over 4 years and I’m now 51. I contributed my “high” cholesterol to my shift work and weighing 195lbs. In Nov 2020 I made a lifestyle change and stopped my shift work and increased my exercising to lose weight. I am now down to 180 lbs. I still run 3 miles 3-4 times a week but I have noticed a lack of energy and an extended recovery. I’m seriously thinking of stopping my statin and adding CoQ10 to my regiment after watching your presentation.
Wow, Andrew, congratulations on your lifestyle empowerment! Be sure to work closely with your doctor re: statin decision and personalizing that decision to your full history. You know how I feel about adding CoQ10 in any case! Be well.
My dad's been having balance issues and a bit of muscle weakness / loss of energy with the use of his medium/high dose statin for years. Will be getting him this supplement ASAP and will update on how he's doing later. Thank you for spreading the word!
I sincerely hope that this helps, if CoQ10 deficiency is the cause. Give it 3-6 months at least, before judging. May you and your dad be well!
@@ginaserraioccomd974 Thank you, he’s been seen by several traditional doctors and nothing seems to work. I am also starting medical school soon myself and my goal is to practice internal and holistic medicine like yourself. Thank you again!
Great video! What are the effects of statins on dolichols? Should you be taking dolichol supplement (if there are any) if you are a statin user? Thank you!
Dolichols are involved in peptide assembly (and thus very important) but unfortunately I could not find that much information in the PubMed research database (re: dolichols and statins), and I am not aware of any supplement. Hopefully there will be more research to come!
I’ve been told Lisinopril lowers the CoEnQ10 levels also, is this true?
Appreciated this video hope you make more! Take care ❤
I have not seen this to be a significant issue. Warmly, Dr. Gina
I've been on Atorvastatin 80mg in the eve 6 month's since OHS always had slight muscle pain but was ok but just this last month pains have been getting a bit too much do you think COQ10 would be ok for me?. I was taking it for about 3 years daily before my op.
Maam what about its reaction with clopidogrel
Unfortunately I can’t find any solid reliable research data to advise on this. Some interactions just haven’t been studied very well yet, but I found some resources that indicate it is probably fine. There is no good data (as of now) to show that it’s a problem. If I was the patient on Plavix and also statins, I would test a fasting CoQ10 blood level first to see if I am low, and then take only enough to get my level around 1.0. Please work with your doctor to understand the full risks and benefits. Be well. - Dr. Gina

How do I know the proper dosage?
The vast majority of patients do great with just 100mg with first meal. If you really want I check, then get a fasting Coenzyme Q10 blood test and aim for a level over 1.0. Wish you the best.
@@ginaserraioccomd974 any harm or benefit with adding fish oil supplements?
Generally not an issue to combine, but you will need to work with your practitioner to personalize your supplements to your medical history.
Why do not all doctors who recommend statins not recommend COQ-10 ??
I suspect that if CoQ10 was a prescription drug, doctors would be more motivated to check fasting CoQ10 levels on patients and prescribe it. Thanks for watching! May you be well.
Insurance not paying. Not in their protocol. Pharma not sponsoring.
Here is an idea: Let’s get to the root of cause of why there is too much cholesterol. Standard western medicine loves to sell an expensive drug to treat the symptoms with little consideration for the side effects.
So what may be the cause of high cholesterol? My findings are that there is usually a 24/7 flow of glucose in the blood vessels. It’s the diet. Excessive carbohydrates are a major contributor - above 50 grams per day. Learn how to read labels and calculate carbohydrate consumption. Eat more green foods and less junk foods. ( Foods high in refined seed oils, sugars, and carbohydrates)
Talk to your doctor. All you need to know ( do some homework) is on You Tube.
You're so right. Wouldn't it be wonderful if this is what was advertised, instead of drugs. But for those few people who truly need a statin despite best lifestyle efforts, I hope that they consider taking CoQ10 with it! May you stay empowered & healthy!
