Political Parties Must Be Subject To the Same Stringent Transparency Rules as NGOs

  • This week Sucheta Dalal looks at the Supreme Court's decision on Electoral Bonds in India. These bonds allowed anonymous donations to political parties, raising concerns about transparency. The Court struck down the scheme, demanding to know who donated to whom. Watch the video as Sucheta Dalal argues that the same stringent rules transparency applied to NGOs should also be applicable to political parties.

interesting point. unfortunately no shareholder will question management or demand access to the board discussion when the decision to donate via electoral bonds was taken or quantum of funds was decided. Especially when repeated donations are made. The board is equally responsible and shareholders have a right to know

You have been crisp and logically clear on this important issue. To extend the argument, I think
that it is immoral for elected representatives (or public servants like our Administrative Services
folks) to lead regal lives at the cost of taxpayers money. Who gave the freedom and moral sanction
for the PM and co to live like kings? No accountability, no nothing ! Just think about the insane
benefits doled out to high up public servants - laws and rules they make that benefit only themselves !
    This has to stop.

Also the question arises why a company is allowed to contribute to a Political party, Party cannot Vote in the elections and hence should not be allowed to contribute to Political parties, as a individual their CEOs , MDs can contribute since they can Vote. Only individual contributions should be considered for Political Parties. Political Parties are about ideologies which citizen Vote for, so only citizens should be allowed to contribute.

I too demand why this special treatment to present govt, whereas we were deeply sleeping when illecit cash donations were funding govts during elections, to do control those elected govts and so their bombings in CST station, Taj hotel, Hospitals and even Cafes. How such anti-national activities could have carried out if white-money electoral bonds were inforce, in those days.
Even Pakisthan sponsered many bomb blasts in our beautiful city, having donated cash to then political parties in unaccountable, black money in cash and my favourite journalist was in deep sleep those days that could not raise this topic, when their OWN city was bombarded with same 'cash donations'.
We too demand not to special treat this present govt too, as like we slept in those national-security threatened times and allowed our loving Mumbaites became dead bodies, due to our deep-sleep.

Madam, so glad that you started this discussion in 2024. But were we sleeping before electoral bonds came into existence? You were in your most investigative mode before this issue, as well.
So, we didnot hear our favourite investigative journalist talked about 'cash donations to political parties' where no one troubled to investigate whether that illecit cash been donated by a terrorist group who funded party to allow them to bomb local trains or killing so many innocents on CST station and hospital. Why to bother, Madam. That time my govt was in full force and why investigating journalist need to bother about such 'illecit cash transactions and those donors control over govts and nation itself.
Now, suddenly our investigative journalists raised from their long sleep and started morning-hungama.
Atleast, now public knew that those donors are NOT ANANYMOUS and they had to buy electoral bonds from ONLY white money.
Suddenly wakening from deep sleep is not PURE JOURNALISM, a journalist would have raised same topic when parties were funded by illecit means like terrorist nations and witty forces, who tried to destabilize and control those govts.
Madam, we have only one life. Let us be true and principled so that atleast no one like me question the integrity of a investigative journalist's hipocritic human life.
Thankyou, Madam for understanding my point.
