I have wondered what happened to the one day rod builds though. Those were so much fun to watch. Keep it up with saving all the old iron man!!

Why and how the trucking industry got forced into that garbage has been a pain in the wallet ever since it was mandated. Id hold onto all of the old mechanical drives you can find..Great video man!
agreed. dumbest thing they've done, AND to go so far as to configure electronics such that they can render an engine or vehicle inoperable is the apex of stupidity among automotive engineering. I spent the bulk of my career working with electronics, and have seen how quickly critical parts for VERY expensive equipment became 'obsolete' and no longer available causing sevveral $10s of thousands to replace the now unrepairable machine for lack of a $30.00 chip.
I know next to nothing about diesel engines. Same goes for those wonderful steam engines, so it's right instructive. I never miss your channel. I also find the wrecker calls interesting as well.
I test drove a new pickup the other day. When you stop at a light the engine dies and then restarts when you press the accelerator. Worst option ever! I had an old truck back when I was in high school that would die when you stopped. That test drive brought back the anxiety/embarrassment of hoping my old truck would restart!
I drove a Mercedes with that option the other day, when you would stop at a light the engine would shut off and before you'd be ready to take off again the AC would be blowing warm air. I live in Hawaii and AC stays on in the car year round. That auto stop/start is the dumbest feature ever. There's a switch to turn it off, but you have to push it every time you drive the car because the auto stop/start is always re-enabled by default. I can't imagine having that feature turned on in stop and go rush hour traffic... seems like you'd be replacing the starter every six months. The really dumb thing is that this feature is supposed to make the cars more fuel efficient but it requires them to have an extra battery. So you're saving a few ounces of fuel but now you have to change another battery every 2-4 years (they don't seem to last any longer than that)... yeah, that's so much better for the environment. 🙄

With your talent and knowledge, I am sure you are going to make a really nice truck. I would check out that other engine a little more to see if it's the cooler given you issues. I agree with you about the mechanical injectors and the gauges. The mechanical equipment just works with less problems than the electronic ones. That is just another layer of aggravation that is not needed. There is no need to make something complex for no reason at all. The electronic equipment can be tweaked at the factory so it fails sooner and you have to buy another one. All the older equipment that is mechanical is still running for a reason. If you don’t have signs of oil in the radiator, it’s not the oil cooler. Oil coolers will always put oil in the radiator, due to the fact that the lube system runs 60 psi and the cooling system runs 12-14 psi. Liner seals are the most likely culprits.

I put a lot of miles on those era Binders. They were all rental fleet trucks we rented from National lease, Ryder, And Hogan. Most were 4 speed automatics, that failed quite often. When the rental companies started specking the 6 speed auto, the problems went away. I preferred the manual gear trucks, but as most newbys couldn't drive them, the Agencies no longer ordered them. The manual gear one always got considerably better mileage. I believe I would spend the time to pinpoint the problems on the 96 before pulling it. The miles on the 2nd motor aren't that many for those series motors. We often had fleet units that were well on their way to the one million mark and still solid. When Navistar went to the electronic injection , we always could count on injector problems, not too bad to fix, but being they were rentals, the issue was always the problem to get the company to do the repairs.
When did a $3 jug of antifreeze become “highway robbery”? Prices are just insane on everything. Many folks in Florida pay more per month for home insurance and taxes than their mortgage. I would live in a pine slab and tar paper shanty without electricity and with a wood stove and a bow saw before such. All the new vehicles will be endless money pits. All.

Pull the pan and pressurize the coolant system. I've heard some dt466s would develop a coolant leak on the front of the engine where the aluminum timing cover and the block and head bolt together. Not a simple fix, but better than a cracked head.

Excellent video Johnathan W :) also would swap motor from dump truck to new one plus manifold setup to and hopefully transmission got to and hook up fine too!
You know what you're doing . That 2nd one sounded very good . Pressure check the cooler on the 1st . Hopefully , it's in the cooler . That's too bad about the fresh oil & filter . Been there , done that . But when an engine sets , no oil , & you gave it all it needed , it tends to return the favor . You know there's a problem , & you know you can fix it easy , if the leak is the cooler . I'm sure you'll have it sorted out , one way or another . You always do , Jonathan . You are blessed with many spare parts , & a mind that can put it all together , to make dreams come true , from "scrap" . You may not be the richest man on the planet , but you are . One of the smartest , & hardest working , people on this planet , too . That , & you are just an easy going kind of guy . That is what makes you "priceless" . It's what tells the rest of us , we are dragging a$$ . Get R done .
Agree. Switch engines and get away from the electronic ignition . Case in point: commercial fishermen in my community have had hair-pulling problems with the new marine Volvo engines, designed with electronic ignitions. Factory trained techs were unable to solve problem even after replacing the brain. Solution: pull engine and go back to mechanical system. Problem solved.
Tell it about the electronics. that's why I ride Ural, at least I know what to expect there, and my truck is a pre-pentastar Dodge, not Ram... Oh, and I am a computer geek by trade...computers on my desk are fine, in vehicles, not so much...
Jonathan if you need a turbo or anything like that get ahold of area diesel they do have these that's what they do specializes in turbos and injectors whatever it is they can get it or they can find it I do have a CZcams channel called area diesel so just something you might want to think about all right this is Bob from Vero Beach Florida God bless stay safe and have a happy holiday
I'd check the oil cooler first, and consider dropping the pan to see where the water is coming from... Do 466s have liners and seals? It might have been overheated and cooked the seals. Fairly easy changeout and then it's possibly a good spare... PS wally's 15-40W was 13/gl the other week. Good enuf for snow blowers...
I love them internationals my newest international rollback is 2000 year model and I got a 95 also but not going no newer..I think I can swap my 2000 Dt 466 back over to mechanical if need to it runs great but I like you trying to weed out all electric good luck with ur new buy
See what that oil cooler looks like...if replacing it stops the oil from getting in, then once you get temp the water will disappear from the crankcase & l wouldn't strip no parts off the chicken truck motor...is that an old blue(?) Chevelle at about the 25.00 mark over there by Jordan

That 88 model is the b etter style of front in my opinion.
The ticking could be valve train problems. They are noted for that
Man I do love a couple old starts, i remember that sound getting driven to school by one every day, later on an E but can’t beat mechanical, spent a whole summer repairing those beds for the city they were terrible a lot of times used them for moving salt
Great use of parts!
Thanks.
100.00 is good job for the best of aworking times putting on the road 😊
I agree with you on these engines and I am thinking about putting an older engine in my truck to get away from ECM s etc etc.
From the sounds of it I'm liking it so I think I agree with you buddy
Tell it about the electronics. that's why I ride Ural, at least I know what to expect there, and my truck is a pre-pentastar Dodge, not Ram...
Oh, and I am a computer geek by trade...computers on my desk are fine, in vehicles, not so much...
2 INTERNATIONAL TRUCKS, FIRST STARTS AND DIAGNOSE
👍
How many hours do you have in your day I only have 24.
Your working on cars, trucks, steam engines and buildings, do you ever sleep Jonathan 😂
👌👌👌
No antifreeze I would definitely check that cooler first I bet it's popped internally.
Heater core - Joe Btfsplk!
I've been looking for one of those
Dt466 and a 7 speed
Looked to me like that power steering pump was just floating around on the engine. Something looks loose there.
More excellent content from Johnathan! Just to show my ignorance, what is a 'side puller' style ramp truck? Type of winch mount?
Kinda off topic but are you going to get back to the 4x4 wrecker any time soon?
Sounds like you got a Road Ranger 12 speed trainie.. I drove a White it had a Cummings and Road Ranger on it, good running truck.
