Lenne miről "panaszkodni" :D (anno benne voltam)
Despite being "pessimistic country", you are still merry, have the best Christmas Fair in the world and have such great sense for homour. This is so original. :-) Love you, Hungary! Greetings from Croatia
These are wonderful! The music in this one is livelier than in most. It encourages me that complaints world-wide are very similar. We are all very much alike. Ah ... I must admit I teared up a little bit when they mentioned that Kurt Vonnegut has died. So it goes.
the reference to gloomy sunday in the beginning and at the end was brilliant. i dont follow the language, but i'm still v impressed.. i think this is one of the best compositions among all the complaints songs! the rhythm, meter and rhyme are great.
it sounds like there's some specific examples and deep feelings in the lines about "we're not the bee's knees and we haven't even got a moonbase", if any English speaking Magyar reads this and is feeling kindly, can you explain how it sounds in Magyar? (and am I even correct in thinking that's better than saying Hungarian :P )
1. yeah, you're correct :) 2. the original lyrics says "nem mi vagyunk a Janik". That equals to "we are not the Johnnies". The weird (and quite rare) expression "mi vagyunk a Janik - we are the Johnnies" means something like 'we are the boss', so the lyrics refers to the fact that this phrase is not really true for us nowadays...
Mátyás Endrey Ah so the translator chose an English idiom (the bee's knees) that implies being popular and fashionable. But the Maygar idiom implies regret that your country isn't as important in Europe as it used to be? (It's sad that most people know very little history. So they don't know that the Maygar had good reason to feel important in the past. To start with, the Hapsburgs would have fallen apart without you :P So I guess I see why they translated it that way. But I am very happy you explained the actual Maygar idiom) What's this about a moonbase though? Was there Communist propaganda about building one? Or is it kind of like the English complaint "where's my jetpack?" (I mean, a general sadness the future we have lived to see is not anything like the one we hoped to see when we were younger?) Also: I notice in the song there's a lot of sadness that Maygar culture isn't friendly, cheerful and cooperative? Are these virtues which your country believed were important? Or is it more that people are so unfriendly, pessimistic, and selfish now that it is so startling? Are people surprised that this sourness is one of the main things people see in each other now? Lastly, this song was made almost eight years ago. Were things better or worse than they have been the last couple of years? Are people still as pessimistic? More pessimistic? Less? Are there any new complaints you think would have been made in the song now? Thank you for replying, I hope you have time and energy to reply sometime. This is one of my favorite complaints choirs. Realistic and honest, but good humored and mature. It is encouraging to see the positive attitude despite the memories of things like 1956 (Or 1918-1919 for that matter >.
so sorry, i had totally forgotten about this video and now that i found it again, i was quite surprised to see my name in the comment section. :D but you know what, i'll reply now because your questions are so interesting and hope it's better late than never :) 1) I would not say this idiom implies regret about losing the country's importance, but the use of it in this song probably means that. (Interestingly, most of us are not proud of the Habsburg (with a b! :) ) era because they consider Habsburgs foreign conquerors who oppressed us. National pride rather goes back to earlier eras and two freedom fights against the Habsburgs - as well as the 1956 revolution.) 2) Yes, "Hungarian hospitality" is a kind of a cliché here, but many of us feel it has no meaning nowadays (if it ever had at all). For example, if you have heard something about our government's reaction to the refugee crisis, I don't need to explain that. Your other guess is also correct, some people describe Hungarians as pessimistic people, but I don't really agree with them. Selfish and unfriendly? - well, you can meet lots of very nice people here and our culture is really diverse. But I would say that the 40 years of communism has really made us more delfish, because it was how the system worked: you could have an acceptable life, but only if you were selfish and did not deal with much more than yourself and your family. 3) Well, I have no good news. When this song was made, we still had the energy and the self-irony to sing about these things. Now we have a growingly authoritarian government for 7 years anf the whole society is falling into apathy - and back to the attitude I referred to: you only care about yourself or you can't feel safe. Of course, we still have wonderful people, scientists, artists, who are really worth paying attention to, but the general atmosphere is much less optimistic than it was 10 years ago. (You are right about 1918-19 - our country lost two thirds of its land. Some of it was justified but they also deprived us of totally Hungarian-populated areas, which is, of course, a national trauma. This is whyt too many of us are still looking to the past and not the future, which is, I think, a bad attitude.) It is so nice to see that you know a lot and are interested in our culture, I hope you will see my answer even though it took me a little time to write it ;)
omg hillarious *___* + comlaint sentence: "Why didin't I see the complaint choir in the subway?" When was it recorded?
which other complaints choir has a complaint about the price of weed?

@Gabitransy Dear Gabitransy... As a Hungarian I say thanks for your opinion... but I as musician, singer can not say that... There are some people that like sing...
Did you guys see the German Complaints Choir? Well lets just say that Hungarians' life provided more inspiration for their own Complaints song... Like the song better too.
parody a kind of type of people everywhere in the world. I think pessimism is a sickness of ateism, and in arestored World, in Earthly heavenly Kingdom we cannot find this painfull psychological sick, what is pessimism. These creattion is funny, coz try to laughing on this!
Such a tipicala Hungarian attitude, most of the Hungarian posts here say this song is bad, not good enough, shame, etc, but almost all of the comments, opinions from abroad are good... unbelieveable. Why Hungarian people can't appreciate their own good stuff??
This and the Helsinki complaints choir are my favorites. "And even Vonnegut is dead". Like spoken from my own heart.
köszi srácok !! ez most hétfő reggel nagyon kellet. MÉG !!! támogatom ezerrel

@freegyes köszönjük. :) igen, a humor sokat segít valóban.
