    “Who the heck is this guy” was sarcastic everyone. It was more of head-scratch moment because he got promoted in an instant and it threw me off guard, that’s all. I’m not really sure why people are saying I don’t understand what’s going on I very clearly do it’s just some of my comments come off as surprised that’s all. And remember this is my initial reaction, not my final interpretation…
    I am trying to do my best to keep the comments as balanced as possible vs the amount of content in the video. I will work on trying to pause at the best appropriate times to make a comment! Be patient with me, thank you all so much for watching!

    Hamilton gets angry when Washington calls him "son" because of the fact that he's an orphan.

    Burr wasn't Charles Lee's second, Lin just put him in the scene for dramatic effect. Charles Lee got court martialed for his battle failure and kicked out of the army. He died of tuberculosis while the war was still going on. An avowed atheist, he said he didn't want to be buried in a church, but he was, anyway. Lee was not related to Robert E. Lee.
    Hamilton and Laurens had a very close relationship, which has caused historians to speculate that they were lovers, though homosexuality was a capital offense during that period. It's only speculation, there is no proof other than the language they used in their letters. Laurens grew up in Switzerland, and when he was young, he was known to have emotional attachments to other men, though there is no evidence that there was any physical relationship. Both men married and had children, though.

    Charles Lee resigned his commission with the British thinking it likely he would get command of the American troops. He was actually considered by the British to be the best officer the Colonials had on their side. He would often do things to undermine Washington trying to get him removed from command. (In the beginning when Washington was suffering many defeats, it was often debated if they should fire Washington and replace him, Lee being one of the ones considered as a replacement.) Lee ended up being captured by the British and after his release, it was thought by some that he had some pro-British sentiments. Then at the Battle of Monmouth, with his early retreat, Washington confronted him on the field and this was the beginning of the end for Lee.

    Don’t feel bad not getting it all on the first take, it’s A LOT to take in. It also doesn’t help when it’s all split up being watched like this, you forget the little things. I understand why you do it, just saying it doesn’t help with this show when it’s all broke up being watched. When you’re done, I always suggest downloading the music and listening to the album, that really helped me. Keep them coming though, love the content!

    One thing to remember with pistol duels of this era is that these guns were way less accurate, reliable, and efficient than modern guns. There is a surprisingly decent chance of both combatants walking away even if they're both shot. Mind you, there's a much higher chance of infection than with modern ammo and medicine.

    So with ten duel commandments you have to remember honour was everything then and you could sometimes only regain it on the “field of honour” by duelling. Which was highly illegal back then. Not that many cared.

    The reason you missed why Lee is mentioned is because you were more concerned with stage direction than listening to the words. Hamilton keeps requesting to be on the front lines, Washington refuses and gives Lee the command Hamilton wanted. This is such a word dense play that it takes many views to get most of it. Pausing and rewinding is necessary for most viewers that want to understand the history and the genius way LMM incorporates actual events into the play.

      I caught it, I only said “who the heck is this guy” because it caught me off guard that he got promoted with a snap of the finger. It was more of a sarcastic comment. Everything in these three scenes is pretty straight forward!

      Yep. Welcome to the 18th century, where personal honor was so big with many dudes in Europe that they'd go out into a field and shoot at each other to prove they're right. It was stupid, yes, but well...people were stupid back then. (Hell, many of them are still stupid today.)

    The reason you are not understanding is because you keep talking during the scenes and you have to pay attention to every single word. When you do stop the recording, because the words go by so fast, you have to go back and listen to begin of the phrase. Also you have to remember this is real history this is not some fictional play. This play is being used In history classes in schools.

    • @SalvoG
      @SalvoG  Před 2 lety +2

      Everything in the video is pretty straightforward. The only thing I didn’t understand is why Charlie Lee got promoted so fast but that’s really it

    • @theshadowfax239
      @theshadowfax239 Před 2 lety +4

      Lol, there is a LOT of fiction in this play my dear. I hope they are teaching from this movie, but just using it as a supplemental activity in order to spur an interest. And what is it with you people wanting to watch a reaction to some dude staring wordlessly at a screen? You all should just go watch the movie if you don't want this guy to react. Finally, the amount of you who don't understand the phrase 'who the heck is this guy' doesn't mean that we don't know who the person is literally, but means ' why the heck is this Charlie guy coming going nowhere and getting the second in command' is a little worrisome.
