  • Another artist I love. If you haven't watched the reaction to Kate Bush and the cover of Running up that hill I would urge you to. I really enjoyed this and I hope you do!
    Thank you.

Hi and thanks for this. To me Eivor is on of the very few people who have been able to give a good cover of a Kate Bush song. She is known to be a huge fan of her music, calling her "extraordinary [...] there is no one like her and never will be." And when Eivor covers Kate Bush you can always detect the respect that she has for the original version, even when she is trying to make it her own. And that can make for a great approach. Whenever I listen to Eivor I am always struck by just how naturally herself she sounds, but how similar she sounds to the early Kate Bush vocals. Listening to her really does frequently sound to me very like listening to Kate singing 'Moving' or 'Delius,' 'The Kick Inside,' 'In The Warm Room', 'Feel It' and a few other early Kate Bush songs, which given the difference in their ages has always both surprised and pleased me.
Because of this I would dearly love it Eivor were ever to try to cover a Kate Bush song like 'Rocket's Tail' which even by Kate's standard is one of her most outrageous and extraordinary songs, incorporating David Gilmour on Guitar and the Trio Bulgarka on backing vocals, all colliding, and interweaving with Kate to create something completely unique even in the Kate Bush discography.
Truly live performances by Kate Bush are hard to find. But there some available that are particularly worth noting. Her live version of 'James and the Cold Gun' from the Hammersmith Odeon, even though it is from the late 1970's with (poor) picture quality to match, her performance really is spectacular. Then there is the live performance of 'The Wedding List', from a charity concert where her band for the performance included Pete Townsend on guitar and Phil Collins on Drums. And there is the live performance of 'Running Up That Hill' from the London Palladium, featuring David Gilmour on headless Steinberger guitar.
You might be interested in the fact that across her career, Kate Bush has a recorded a very small number of cover songs. Probably the most famous is her cover of Elton John's 'Rocket Man' which she does very differently. Another is her cover of 'Sexual Healing' by Marvin Gaye, which she also performs very differently. I do also think that you might like her version of the old traditional song 'My Lagan love' which she performs completely A Capella, or her version of "Mna na hEireann' which she sings in Irish Gaelic.
Thanks again for a really interesting reaction video.

Thank you Tommy! I love both artist but only recently heard Kate. I agree in some of the KB songs she’s covered she respects the song as well as the singer. But on the other hand she has an almost otherworldly voice!
It’s interesting that in the covers I’ve done with Kate, all her biggest fans mention all the same songs. What an impact she has made!
Also I’ve had many requests for her cover of Rocket Man!
So I’m putting it on the list and will cover it soon!
      Thank you !!

@@Anothercoverlover62 I do like Eivor very much in her own right and do also like her Kate Bush covers. If I am being completely honest I think I tend to prefer the way Anneke van Giersbergen covers Kate Bush (and she has done a few KB covers over the years). There a loads of poor or mediocre covers of Kate Bush songs, but for me personally, there are a few that are do work well. Apart from Eivor or Anneke, I have always liked Natalie Cole's cover of 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes' and Dusty Springfield also handled it well (even though I greatly prefer the original to both), Nata Surf have a pretty good cover of 'Love and Anger,' Ra Ra Riot did a good cover of "Suspended in Gaffa" - but it does come quite a bit short of the lung busting original, and the Saint Saviour version of 'Army Dreamers' is also well worth a listen.
What you make of the Kate Bush cover of 'Rocket Man' will be interesting to see. It is quite a bit different in places (and she does treat us to impersonations of Marilyn Monroe, Chuck Berry and Micky Mouse from Fantasia along the way).
      Thanks again.

A better quality (upscaled) version of the 1979 Tour of Life recorded at the Manchester Apollo popped up on CZcams a few months ago.

If I’m not mistaken, Top of the Pops has a hard and fast rule disallowing artists from playing live, which has been a bone of contention for a lot of artists.

Thank you for these reactions. I’m a huge Kate Bush fan, a truly sui generis but still underappreciated artist, and think the Hounds of Love album is a masterpiece.
I wasn’t familiar with Eivør but I’m eager to dive further into her catalogue. Her arrangement and vocal approach to this song was puzzling, as it didn’t connect to its themes, in my opinion. But it was beautiful and intriguing. It was maybe reminiscent of Anna von Hausswolff, which I mean as high praise.

I can certainly see that. I like both artist but having watched many of Eivor’s covers I often wonder if she is of this planet!
      Thanks G!!

I was one of the requesters for this comparison. I should have said Eivør’s music video was the version to go for. Her live performances so far have not quite matched that. But Eivør is always good to listen to.

Thank you Steve for the suggestion. I really liked the live version. However I’m glad to react to the studio version at later date or another eivor song on the studio

@@Anothercoverlover62 Just thinking about your observation that Eivør was using her foot on a kick pedal, would you be interested in doing a comparison of two live Eivør performances of ‘True Love’? This performance from 2012 is her singing with a full band and backing singers czcams.com/video/R4HgBwvmn-s/video.htmlsi=KjxVxCj65muunS2b In contrast, this one is her going solo in Los Angeles in 2018 when she is playing electric guitar while stomping on a kick pedal (a one woman band) czcams.com/video/NA5dnFUh-EU/video.htmlsi=Hm3_g5DEg7Bmvil9

@@Anothercoverlover62 I was also one who suggested Hounds of Love. I've always said Eivor definitely has a very similar voice and eclectic style to Kate. But I agree that neither of these live performances do justice to their music video recordings, neither Kate's nor Eivor's, but especially Eivor's. Her artistry in the visuals and the emotion and power in her vocals, plus the instrumentals and sound mixing in the music video are a world or two beyond that live version. And Kate's live version doesn't really match at all with her music video recording, neither in the power and emotion of the vocals or the instrumentals and general feel of the song. The live version seemed more of a pop style as opposed to the pure raw emotion of the music video. Hope you get a chance to compare the music video versions at some point. Thanks again for helping Eivor gets more attention. She's sadly not well known at all outside of Europe. She's from the Faroe Islands BTW and Kate is English if you didn't know. Look forward to more content :)

@@Anothercoverlover62 yeah, i think so, thanks! gloomy sunday featuring ginman after dark. she is wearing suit and tie and delivers vocals not from this planet! many of really high class artists covered it, like björk, anna von hausswolff, sinead o'connor, but no one can compeed with eivør. she is using two different microphones and her voice dances between those two. when you see her hint to the audio engineer you know you can expect some intensity

I prefer Eivor's singing. Kate Bush's dancing reminds me of that character on Seinfeld, I think her name is Eileen's spastic dancing. '
