#Hamilton #TheWorldWasWideEnough #Reaction - ZĂĄbava
The last moments, when Lin Manuel came out to Eliza, he was no longer playing Hamilton. He walked out to show her he told their story. Her gasp was as if through time she saw the audience and knew the story, the legacy had survived. Freaking rips my heart out every darn time. Sitting here, trying to get ready for work, I'm just ugly crying.
Actually thatâs false (the part about Lin coming out for that scene as himself not Hamilton)âŠ.He debunked that a few years agoâŠ.either in a tweet, or he said it in a video, but itâs still an interesting thing to think about.
Its up to the person who plays eliza to interpret the gasp. So anything can be canon to the gasp.
There is no one interpretation of that last breath. Lin, of course, has his own interpretation, but he has never shared it and wants each Eliza and each audience member to interpret it for him or herself.
My own interpretation is that Eliza passed away on that last breath and saw the God and her loved ones.
I like to think that the inception of the idea for the gasp came from something Sondheim said about Sunday In The Park With George. Sondheim said that he cried when writing the word 'Forever' in 'Sunday', because he was moved by the idea of what the subjects might have thought if they knew their ordinary Sunday was being immortalised in a famous painting. They would walk through that park Forever and everyone who came after them would be aware of a day in their life. I know that LMM is aware of that passage from one of Sondheims books because he read it at a memorial for Sondheim. So I like to think LMM wanted to write a moment in a song where the person being immortalised found out they were immortalised - so I think that is what the gasp is. I don't think it necessarily mean that LMM was out of character when showing Eliza to the audience - he could still be Hamilton, but Hamilton is showing his wife for the first time something he has known for longer - they lived impactful lives that were immortalised.
This is my absolute favorite part. I've seen Hamilton on Broadway and seen this movie - literally over 100 times - and I cry. Each. Time.
When Phillipa sings that line âI live another 50 yearsâ when Hamilton died, Eliza was 47 years old and if you add 47 + 50âŠ..that equals to 97. Eliza lived to be 97 years old, and while she was still alive she and Angelica continued Alexanderâs legacyâŠ.everything that was mentioned in the last song from her speaking out against slavery, interviewing all of those soldiers, etcâŠshe did all of that. She truly did live a productive life, and ironicallyâŠ.when she keeps asking âhave I done enough?â Itâs because sheâs afraid that sheâll run out of time to tell Alexanderâs story, just like he unfortunately ran out of time with himself. Sadly, she also had to fight for the house that she and Hamilton owned. The only home that Alexander Hamilton ever owned which I believe is currently in Harlem NY âHamilton Grangeâ he only lived in it for I think 2 years before being killedâŠbut after he died, Eliza was not only left with their children, but she had to collect and pay off his debtsâŠ.she lost the home for a while, but bought it back. Some say that whenever she had visitors, they would see her looking at a portrait of Alexander, talking to him, telling that that she couldnât wait to see him againâŠ.which happens to be one of the last lines in the show. As of todayâŠ.the orphanage that Eliza started is still existing in BrooklynâŠitâs called The NY Orphan Asylum Society, but they run non profit organization called Graham WindhamâŠ.the cast of Hamilton actually got to host a few theatre workshops there, and I think for Phillipa SooâŠ..she now has a great bond and connection with them due to having played Eliza. When she mentions Trinity churchâŠthat church has existed since Alexander was aliveâŠof course the current building itself has been rebuilt a few times but there was always a Trinity church in NYCâŠ.Alexander, Eliza, & Angelica are all buried thereâŠ..Phillip Hamilton actually is hurried underneath the street next to it because he was the one who initiated the duel that got him killed, and Iâm sure that since he came from a wealthy and well know family, that was looked down upon.
When LMM first learned that the orphanage was still in existence, he sent them a rather large check as a donation. It was so big that the organizationâs director called him. That was the first time the director had heard of the play (it was just starting previews).
I read somewhere that Phillipa Soo volunteers at the orphanage. Not sure if it's true, but pretty cool if it is..
Phillips body was never found actually, no one knows were he was buried, Eliza and Alexander didnât want to label his grave, he is said to be buried right outside the actual graveyard. Eliza and Alexander didnât want to label his grave so they would forget they lost a son. Not only that, but their eldest daughter was but in an mental institution because she was seeing hallucinations of Phillip after he past.
tldr pls? đ
Eliza not only founded the orphanage, she also founded the first school (a free of charge school) in Washington heights, the neighborhood that Lin was born and raised in, which is such a heartwarming full circle
In a way, I guess we can all say that it was probably fate that Lin read Ron Chernowâs book on HamiltonâŠ.so much of Linâs life, is kind of similar to Alexanderâs lifeâŠitâs also amazing to me how weâre learning so much about our own countryâs history not just from a Broadway musical, but from reading the comments here on CZcamsâŠ.Just from watching like 3 Hamilton videos, Iâve learned way more about the Founding Fathers and Founding Mothers, than I ever did in schoolâŠ..and they never taught us about the Founding Mothers. All I ever heard about Eliza was that she was Alexanderâs wifeâŠ.I never knew she came from am extremely rich family, she had multiple siblings even though only a few of them lived to adulthood, she also founded the orphanage. All of that I learned from CZcams comments and from TikTok.
Nobody ask me, but i'm an astrologer and i can see how astrologically both of them have a lot in common.
Aaron Burr lived a haunted life after that duel. He was a pariah in New York. He couldn't sustain his legal practice. He married a child when he was in his 50's then left to try and declare himself emperor of Mexico, and he would constantly talk about Alexander, referring to him as, "my friend Hamilton whom I shot." It was a rather pitiful and tragic end for him.
6:00 Burr is the narrator of the show. He opens the first number by introducing Alexander and he introduces songs he doesn't even lead, like The Schuyler Sisters and Say No To This. And we only see Burr sing about the room where it happened, we don't see what took place.
Just what âThomas claimedâ. And we know how Jefferson has a reputation for being such a reliable narrator. đ. Lol.
that last line where Burr says "I should have known the world was wide enough for Hamilton and me" was part of a letter Burr wrote
There are two Aaron Burrs: one is the narrator, and one is the character in the story thatâs happening. The narrator knows everything, and the character only knows whatâs happened so far. I got way into Hamilton and did a whole comparison with tarot.
Burr is the narrator of this story. By definition he breaks the 4th wall constantly.
If you have not seen it, the White House preview performance is worth a watch. No scenery or sets, it works so well.
GREAT suggestion!!
Especially "One Last Time" with Obama..
This song gets me every time and when she talks about the Orphanage & sees Alexandar's face on every child. You can go ahead and cry dude, it's OK lol.
When she's sings "it's only a matter of time.." and you see Hamilton in the back... looking at her like he's just so fucking proud of and grateful for her â€
Every time Burr says: This man will not make an orphan of my daughter⊠That hits man, tears
Except, his daughter was a grown woman who was married...
Angelica singing Congratulations is my all time favorite deleted song. You think she went off on him before - itâs perfect.
âïž#FACTS
I love the little revenge that Alexander Hamilton Jr gets on Burr. Burrâs second wife hires Hamilton Jr to be her divorce lawyer when she files. The case takes three years, and the day itâs finalized, Burr dies.
He had multiple strokes while the case was going on and was in poor health near the end, but, man. Get him, Hamilton Jr.
There are four actors not in chorus whites at the end of the song. Burr, Hamilton, and Eliza and Anjelica. (Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story)
Arron burr also said closer to the end of his life how he regretted dueling Hamilton he actually said "the world was wide enough for Hamilton and me I only wish I had know that when I was younger"
Trinity Churchyard is where the Hamiltons are buried. The church was a refuge on 9/11 for people trying to escape the debris that was falling.
The orphanage that she established is still around today but is coincide in a program called graham Windham
I'm a very vocal Burr supporter, and Alex had E V E R Y opportunity to save himself, so I have no pity for him. Burr had good reason to think he was going to get shot. I read some of the letters between them leading up to the duel and even Lin, the brilliant actor that he is, could not portray the level of arrogance in the letters Alexander wrote.
I will argue that Hamilton very rarely fired at his opponents and that he was almost certainly wearing his glasses to AVOID shooting Burr accidentally.
That's how his son Philip was killed - George Eacker had no idea about the hair triggers on the Hamilton family pistols. (He didn't fire early, either. It took minutes before either did anything.)
Hamilton was probably using John Church's guns - which had the same hair trigger. He was fiddling with the gun to be sure it wasn't set to the easy option. (12 pounds vs 8 oz to squeeze the trigger to fire.)
Burr, while definitely in some danger, was just as safe as Alex. Could have just ignored the shit-talk Ham was known for.
@@chellesama8256 Hindsight is 20/20, but it isn't unreasonable that Burr may have feared for his life. Burr could've ignored it, true, however, alternatively, Alex could've just apologized like a grown man. I believe that had it not been Burr, someone would've shot him. The only person I can think of in history that was as insufferably condescending is Socrates. So morally arrogant that he refused to save himself.
OMG... ugly cry every time. Such a powerful ending to this masterpiece. Now I've got to pull it together for work...
Sal - the PBS Great Performances documentary goes to great length interviewing LMM and others in the cast, as well as historians and the author of the book LMM was reading poolside when the idea of a Hamilton rap started percolating in his mind. It's a really good foundation for how this whole show came about. It's hard to find though. The other thing worthy of a watch is the White House performances show. Obama invited LMM and the cast to perform. No costumes or sets. Just the cast singing live. It's really good too. If you care to react to any more Hamilton content, I'm here for it. Also looking forward to In The Heights. Cheers!
I loved going on this Hamilton journey with you
Thanks for reacting to the whole thing and not just skipping the video every 30 seconds like some reaction videos out there; plus you actually caught a lot of things that I didn't catch even on my second watch through. Loved this format of breaking up the musical into 10-20 min videos. Can't wait to see u react to in the heights!
Burr went on from here to try and break away and start his own country - Jefferson even had him arrested and charged with Treason, but he was acquitted. His ambition was his fatal flaw.
Heâs like a tragic Shakespeareian character ex: Macbeth, his ambition also ended up being his flow
Loll I just realized he literally says that in his letters to Angelica in âTake a breakâ
†âżâ§đżâ§âż â€
Watch Washington at the end when Eliza talks about the Washington monument and the continued efforts to end slavery. Washington's reaction is amazing...
Thank you for this comment! Iâve never noticed this before
Definitely check out the Hamilton polka by Weird Al and Hamilton in 7 minutes!
You handled it pretty good at the end, I fell apart and cried like a baby. lol
You should watch the White House performances especially the original 2009 performance before it was a musical. Also the Hamilton Polka.
Johnathan Groff played King George, he also was the voice of Kristoff in Frozen :)
Thank you so much for reacting to this incredible piece of work!
You should react to some of the songs cut from the play; especially, Congratulations, Cabinet Battle #3 and the cut rap from The Adams Administration. They went HAM!!
The original song for Schuyler defeat was also really good. It's way better in my opinion than the one that was performed
I have that cut rap memorized from listening to it so much.
My personal interpretation of that gaspâŠand the smile before itâŠwas Eliza meeting Hamilton again after she died, and him essentially telling her, âIt *was* enough. Because of you, theyâre telling my story right now, so many years later.â
You should also watch great performances on PBS is on here on CZcams Hamilton's America you go behind the scenes and everything that Lin Manuel Miranda did to bring this to life And who he talked to and he went to the places that everybody was that And how they felt going behind the scenes learn to historic
Yes! A really interesting show.
Wow man, experiencing âHamiltonâ and the catalog Led Zeppelin at the same time is pretty intense. The fact that so much greatness was born in the minds of just two incredibly gifted visionaries⊠Jimmy Page and Lin-Manuel Miranda âŠis staggering, to say the least.
I _...think_ it was you who said you wanted to check out the Winterâs Ball / Helpless / Satisfied side-by-side comparison, way back when? Or was it another reactor? Anyway, worth a viewing.
Also just to mention, Burr becomes an unreliable narrator here for just a moment at one point: he *_was not_* known as a âterrible shotâ, in fact he was quite a decent marksman.
I still tear up every time...
I've watched it so many times. It is a beautiful story and the production, wow, you can watch it repeatedly. Enjoy!
Jon Groff, who played mad King George III is standing beside Daveed Diggs at the end
Why wasn't he dressed as the king, I wonder? That would've been awesome.
@@carmen_says_hi noone excepto Ham, Eliza, Burr, Angélica are dressed as their characters bc is a symbol of death I guess and those are who yold their story as well
You need to watch the episode of "Drunk History," where Lin tells everyone about Hamilton and the historical aspects that couldn't be translated well into the play. It's rather funny and gives more insight.
I love that this play is called just "Hamilton." It's not "Alexander Hamilton."
Fun fact the music "who lives, who dies, who tell your story" is the only song Alexandre doesn't sing. But the song is only dedicated to him and that the favorite song of Hamilton musical creator â€
Bro, how are u not in tears!!! I have tears streaming down my face!
Brilliant⊠every single bit of this musical is brilliant
The last 2 some give me goosebumps
I've not read through all of the comments and I'm late to your channel, but IMO Hamilton, the name of the play, is not referencing Alexander, but Eliza. Sorry if this was opined already by others.
Congratulations and first burn are must sees. Thereâs also a short of lin doing a cut version of the John adams rap that would be great
React First Burn and Congratulation please⊠the original songs in the Hamilton musical
Iâve been waiting for this. Let me get my tissues.
I think of the "narrator Burr" as more like him looking back on the events and the "narration" is his thoughts looking back.
There is a lot to say about burr being "too late" to realize when he says he'll "wait for it"
This entire ending is talking about Hamilton's legacy - and imagining what he might have been able to accomplish if he'd lived
Helpless on Jimmy Fallon and the Room Where it Happens are both great extra content! Plus Alexander Hamilton on the web series Some Good News was amazing too, it was my first introduction to Hamilton.
9:45 fun fact a common self comfort method thingy people do while distressed is hold their hand(s) on their necks as can be seen here
Iâd love to see your reaction to Tick Tick Boom on Netflix!
The running theory is the it wasnât Hamilton that greeted Eliza at the end it was Lin Manuel (the guy who wrote the show) escorting her to the front to show Eliza their story is finally being told and the gasp was her reaction
Congratulations (Hamilton cut song), First burn and Lin Manuel Miranda Poetry Jam at the white house (preview of hamilton before it became hamilton) are some things I suggest you reaction to as I think they are all great companion pieces to Hamilton it self
okay ill watch hamilton AGAINNNN
Recommendation for a future reaction if you haven't seen it yet - the songs from Pippin. For some reason I haven't been able to find a single reaction to this yet, and I think it's absolutely worth a look. The only difficulty is that I don't know if there's a good visual recording of the performance - I've only found a few old audience recordings for a few songs. The songs work just fine on their own, but of course the performance adds an extra layer to them (especially in "War is a Science" - the song and acting is very amusing). Here's the song list in order, if you want to try these:
- Magic to Do
- Corner of the Sky
- War is a Science
- Glory
- Simple Joys
- No Time at All (I think this one's my favorite)
- With You
- Spread a Little Sunshine
- Morning Glow
- On the Right Track
- Kind of Woman
- Extraordinary
- Love Song
- I Guess I'll Miss the Man
- Finale
I would recommend doing these in order - some of the later songs rely heavily on callbacks to previous songs.
These are quite fun songs in general, and I think you'd enjoy them :)
Here's a link to the Spotify playlist that I think is the best recording, if you can't find a better video version of them:
open.spotify.com/album/6JEdW2cbpBPwpmS95r1RHC
We all saw you struggling not to cry. No shame in crying! We all did.
Two things to watch...The Battle of Yorktown that they performed at the Tony Awards...an obvious difference but not because of lighting or the set...what's the difference between that performance and their regular Yorktown Broadway show??
Second....watch Hamilton's tribute to A Chorus Line...it's awesome!
An important point of context is that the award show took place shortly after the Pulse nightclub shooting.
@pigs18 Yes...the same day since the shooting was after midnight. Out of respect, they changed the choreography that day and didn't use the prop muskets in their performance at the Tony Awards that night...a very classy move by LMM and the cast.
Iâm new to the channel! Did you do reaction videos for In The Heights like you mentioned? Iâm not seeing it on CZcams. Thanks!
You should watch Hamilton in 7 minutes it really good and Iâd love to see you react to it
I would definitely suggest any number of the #ham4ham performances (cast members and other Broadway actors gave mini performances before the lottery every week outside- they are random and absolutely wonderful!) Here's a link for 100+ videos you can choose from: czcams.com/play/PLFl1LYp8GaWCKZVu_7I8ItQxW17JCm5cU.html
I'd love for you to react to Hamilton's tribute to A Chorus Line
Please react to First Burn and Congratulations!
there's also dear theodosia (reprise)
also helpless / satisfied side by side comparison
and im excited for in the heights :]
You should react to lin doing drunk history on Hamilton. Then the hamm 4 hamms, the while house performances and first burn.
2 things you'll be interested in watching are LMM at the White House Poetry Slam, when Hamilton was just supposed to be a record, not an entire musical
czcams.com/video/WNFf7nMIGnE/video.html
And favorite #HamforHam
czcams.com/video/3C4vmM5mQT8/video.html
The Schuyler Georges.
I've watched this play so many times, and even though I know what's coming (like dude, a 250 year spoiler? C'mon) I still ugly cry at the end.
As for Burr's motivation at the duel, it wasn't to "not make an orphan of" his daughter, because Theodosia was married and had children of her own. So it was probably more a case of revenge, or politically motivated.
The book Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, that the musical is based on, is a fantastic read (he also did a biography of George Washington), as is Hamilton: The Revolution by LMM.
If it isn't clear yet, I'm complete #Hamiltrash. Welcome to the club!
You should also watch 21 Chump Street by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It's a 20 minute musical on CZcams.
You should definitely react to first burn. It is an awesome song. Also Ten thong One thing, congratulations and the Adam's administration
You need to also react to 1. Congratulations 2. Burn first

You should listen and react to the Hamilton Mixtape itâs amazing!!
10 things, One thing/world, is another version he wrote for this song is the same as this but it also adds onto it with Hamiltons perspective.
Also you might want to look up what happened to Burr on your own time afterwards, he kind of went a bit crazy.
It's finally heeerrrreeeee
Dude. If you need to cry, then cry. There is absolutely no desensitizing from this.
correct. I cried watching it the first time and have cried every time since
Watch the Hamilton BET Cypher by 3 original cast members.
what history has its eyes on you
Have you watched when the Hamilton cast performs at the White House!! Watch those CZcams videosâŠ. Awesome!!
Me at school : the orphanageâŠ
BFF : why r u singing creepy songs?
Me : itâs Hamilton⊠what the crap
pls react to Rent!
Fan girling FR rn
How can She sings without crying???
Burr is my favorite character and I actually don't like Alexander. I also do not view Burr as a villain.
Learn about Burr irl. He was a corrupt sleezebag, borderline traitor.
