    The last moments, when Lin Manuel came out to Eliza, he was no longer playing Hamilton. He walked out to show her he told their story. Her gasp was as if through time she saw the audience and knew the story, the legacy had survived. Freaking rips my heart out every darn time. Sitting here, trying to get ready for work, I'm just ugly crying.

    • @tiamarrow6366
      @tiamarrow6366 Pƙed rokem +39

      Actually that’s false (the part about Lin coming out for that scene as himself not Hamilton)
.He debunked that a few years ago
.either in a tweet, or he said it in a video, but it’s still an interesting thing to think about.

      Its up to the person who plays eliza to interpret the gasp. So anything can be canon to the gasp.

    • @Rae8Anne
      @Rae8Anne Pƙed rokem +23

      There is no one interpretation of that last breath. Lin, of course, has his own interpretation, but he has never shared it and wants each Eliza and each audience member to interpret it for him or herself.
      My own interpretation is that Eliza passed away on that last breath and saw the God and her loved ones.

      I like to think that the inception of the idea for the gasp came from something Sondheim said about Sunday In The Park With George. Sondheim said that he cried when writing the word 'Forever' in 'Sunday', because he was moved by the idea of what the subjects might have thought if they knew their ordinary Sunday was being immortalised in a famous painting. They would walk through that park Forever and everyone who came after them would be aware of a day in their life. I know that LMM is aware of that passage from one of Sondheims books because he read it at a memorial for Sondheim. So I like to think LMM wanted to write a moment in a song where the person being immortalised found out they were immortalised - so I think that is what the gasp is. I don't think it necessarily mean that LMM was out of character when showing Eliza to the audience - he could still be Hamilton, but Hamilton is showing his wife for the first time something he has known for longer - they lived impactful lives that were immortalised.

    When Phillipa sings that line “I live another 50 years” when Hamilton died, Eliza was 47 years old and if you add 47 + 50
..that equals to 97. Eliza lived to be 97 years old, and while she was still alive she and Angelica continued Alexander’s legacy
.everything that was mentioned in the last song from her speaking out against slavery, interviewing all of those soldiers, etc
she did all of that. She truly did live a productive life, and ironically
.when she keeps asking “have I done enough?” It’s because she’s afraid that she’ll run out of time to tell Alexander’s story, just like he unfortunately ran out of time with himself. Sadly, she also had to fight for the house that she and Hamilton owned. The only home that Alexander Hamilton ever owned which I believe is currently in Harlem NY “Hamilton Grange” he only lived in it for I think 2 years before being killed
but after he died, Eliza was not only left with their children, but she had to collect and pay off his debts
.she lost the home for a while, but bought it back. Some say that whenever she had visitors, they would see her looking at a portrait of Alexander, talking to him, telling that that she couldn’t wait to see him again
.which happens to be one of the last lines in the show. As of today
.the orphanage that Eliza started is still existing in Brooklyn
it’s called The NY Orphan Asylum Society, but they run non profit organization called Graham Windham
.the cast of Hamilton actually got to host a few theatre workshops there, and I think for Phillipa Soo
..she now has a great bond and connection with them due to having played Eliza. When she mentions Trinity church
that church has existed since Alexander was alive
of course the current building itself has been rebuilt a few times but there was always a Trinity church in NYC
.Alexander, Eliza, & Angelica are all buried there
..Phillip Hamilton actually is hurried underneath the street next to it because he was the one who initiated the duel that got him killed, and I’m sure that since he came from a wealthy and well know family, that was looked down upon.

      When LMM first learned that the orphanage was still in existence, he sent them a rather large check as a donation. It was so big that the organization’s director called him. That was the first time the director had heard of the play (it was just starting previews).

      Phillips body was never found actually, no one knows were he was buried, Eliza and Alexander didn’t want to label his grave, he is said to be buried right outside the actual graveyard. Eliza and Alexander didn’t want to label his grave so they would forget they lost a son. Not only that, but their eldest daughter was but in an mental institution because she was seeing hallucinations of Phillip after he past.

    • @tiamarrow6366
      @tiamarrow6366 Pƙed rokem +23

      In a way, I guess we can all say that it was probably fate that Lin read Ron Chernow’s book on Hamilton
.so much of Lin’s life, is kind of similar to Alexander’s life
it’s also amazing to me how we’re learning so much about our own country’s history not just from a Broadway musical, but from reading the comments here on CZcams
.Just from watching like 3 Hamilton videos, I’ve learned way more about the Founding Fathers and Founding Mothers, than I ever did in school
..and they never taught us about the Founding Mothers. All I ever heard about Eliza was that she was Alexander’s wife
.I never knew she came from am extremely rich family, she had multiple siblings even though only a few of them lived to adulthood, she also founded the orphanage. All of that I learned from CZcams comments and from TikTok.

    Aaron Burr lived a haunted life after that duel. He was a pariah in New York. He couldn't sustain his legal practice. He married a child when he was in his 50's then left to try and declare himself emperor of Mexico, and he would constantly talk about Alexander, referring to him as, "my friend Hamilton whom I shot." It was a rather pitiful and tragic end for him.

  • @aresef
    @aresef Pƙed rokem +205

    6:00 Burr is the narrator of the show. He opens the first number by introducing Alexander and he introduces songs he doesn't even lead, like The Schuyler Sisters and Say No To This. And we only see Burr sing about the room where it happened, we don't see what took place.

    I'm a very vocal Burr supporter, and Alex had E V E R Y opportunity to save himself, so I have no pity for him. Burr had good reason to think he was going to get shot. I read some of the letters between them leading up to the duel and even Lin, the brilliant actor that he is, could not portray the level of arrogance in the letters Alexander wrote.

      I will argue that Hamilton very rarely fired at his opponents and that he was almost certainly wearing his glasses to AVOID shooting Burr accidentally.
      That's how his son Philip was killed - George Eacker had no idea about the hair triggers on the Hamilton family pistols. (He didn't fire early, either. It took minutes before either did anything.)
      Hamilton was probably using John Church's guns - which had the same hair trigger. He was fiddling with the gun to be sure it wasn't set to the easy option. (12 pounds vs 8 oz to squeeze the trigger to fire.)
      Burr, while definitely in some danger, was just as safe as Alex. Could have just ignored the shit-talk Ham was known for.

      @@chellesama8256 Hindsight is 20/20, but it isn't unreasonable that Burr may have feared for his life. Burr could've ignored it, true, however, alternatively, Alex could've just apologized like a grown man. I believe that had it not been Burr, someone would've shot him. The only person I can think of in history that was as insufferably condescending is Socrates. So morally arrogant that he refused to save himself.

    OMG... ugly cry every time. Such a powerful ending to this masterpiece. Now I've got to pull it together for work...
    Sal - the PBS Great Performances documentary goes to great length interviewing LMM and others in the cast, as well as historians and the author of the book LMM was reading poolside when the idea of a Hamilton rap started percolating in his mind. It's a really good foundation for how this whole show came about. It's hard to find though. The other thing worthy of a watch is the White House performances show. Obama invited LMM and the cast to perform. No costumes or sets. Just the cast singing live. It's really good too. If you care to react to any more Hamilton content, I'm here for it. Also looking forward to In The Heights. Cheers!

    Recommendation for a future reaction if you haven't seen it yet - the songs from Pippin. For some reason I haven't been able to find a single reaction to this yet, and I think it's absolutely worth a look. The only difficulty is that I don't know if there's a good visual recording of the performance - I've only found a few old audience recordings for a few songs. The songs work just fine on their own, but of course the performance adds an extra layer to them (especially in "War is a Science" - the song and acting is very amusing). Here's the song list in order, if you want to try these:
    - Magic to Do
    - Corner of the Sky
    - War is a Science
    - Glory
    - Simple Joys
    - No Time at All (I think this one's my favorite)
    - With You
    - Spread a Little Sunshine
    - Morning Glow
    - On the Right Track
    - Kind of Woman
    - Extraordinary
    - Love Song
    - I Guess I'll Miss the Man
    - Finale
    I would recommend doing these in order - some of the later songs rely heavily on callbacks to previous songs.
    These are quite fun songs in general, and I think you'd enjoy them :)
    Here's a link to the Spotify playlist that I think is the best recording, if you can't find a better video version of them:

Here's a link for 100+ videos you can choose from: czcams.com/play/PLFl1LYp8GaWCKZVu_7I8ItQxW17JCm5cU.html

    2 things you'll be interested in watching are LMM at the White House Poetry Slam, when Hamilton was just supposed to be a record, not an entire musical
    czcams.com/video/WNFf7nMIGnE/video.html
    And favorite #HamforHam
    czcams.com/video/3C4vmM5mQT8/video.html
    The Schuyler Georges.
    I've watched this play so many times, and even though I know what's coming (like dude, a 250 year spoiler? C'mon) I still ugly cry at the end.
    As for Burr's motivation at the duel, it wasn't to "not make an orphan of" his daughter, because Theodosia was married and had children of her own. So it was probably more a case of revenge, or politically motivated.
    The book Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, that the musical is based on, is a fantastic read (he also did a biography of George Washington), as is Hamilton: The Revolution by LMM.
    If it isn't clear yet, I'm complete #Hamiltrash. Welcome to the club!
