tf2whackyengineer I used to watch Seinfeld when I was a kid. They were still airing new episodes at that time. Why the fuck did Netflix go with friends over Seinfeld?
Boy, does it ever show that Rene Echevarria wrote this episode...! So many effective uses of established continuity without descending into the trivia-mongering that defines so much of the franchise today, and just in this scene. Not only Quark, Riker's past with him and the Duras sisters, but the Pakleds as an interstellar power that can't find its behind with both hands.
It wasn't much so of his fair play, it was more of the character being entertaining in many ways. I bet the actor was enjoying every time he was on set.
gskaloyan I'm watching DS9 for the first time and the Odo/Quark rivalry is very entertaining. Quark is one of my favorite characters in all of Star Trek.
I know this is a 3 year old comment, but the best thing about Riker was how he didn't just tolerate non-humans, he understood them on some level. Like with the klingons, he learned their ways and ate their food. To put it simply he tries to Think like who he's talking to instead of just thinking like a human. Like Sisko barely tolerates quark from what I've seen ( though that might be farengi as a whole minus one or two ) and I think the reason why Picard tolerates them is because he is legally required to do so. Where Sisko would interact with strongarm methods ( not as a first action of course, but he's got a lot to deal with ) and Picard would use workarounds like loopholes, Riker would play by Farengi rules and come out on top. If he isn't already I'd wager he'd be an honorary member of every non-human they come across.
"Quark! I see you remember me?" "Ah, how do I forget the man who stole the Defiant and almost made sure we lost our ship and our new cloaking technology!"| "Eh, what?"
I like how there's a Starfleet security guard with Quark when he's communicating with the Enterprise. It's sad that Discovery and ST: Picard don't put much attention to details in their shows.
They're all in the same universe (until JJTrek that is). The cameos between TNG, DS9, and VOY were cool though. Episodes like this aired when both TNG and DS9 were on TV at the same time, so it was easy to do crossover cameos. Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis had a similar relationship.
Riker: I'll send those vouchers to you. Quark: Don't bother. I voided them while we've been talking. Insert audience laughing. Quark is my favorite DS9 character.
Bashir actually did visit the Enterprise, he broke into Sickbay while the ship was docked at DS9 so he could use Dr. Crusher's medical equipment. He met Data and helped him to discover the dream subroutine that Dr. Soong had programmed into him. And of course, Sisko and Picard met in the DS9 pilot. I guess you could also say that Worf and O'Brien both "interacted" with the Enterprise crew but they don't really count.
Leon Kernan he is the first officer and if he wants to use the main view screen to have a conversation about something that pertains to the current mission should be no problem and Picard has done the same before
Keeping the conversation out in the open serves a tactical purpose. If it was a more private conversation Quark might get the impression it's a back alley deal, and would thus have more leverage in the deal. Consider talking to a gang boss over the phone VS meeting one in their home base, surrounded by loyal soldiers.
you know what would have been fun to see? a little bit of that call in a DS9 episode. maybe quarks walking back to his bar and odo stops him, asks him where hes going, and quark replies "i ws just on my way back froma call from will riker, he asked about the dura sisters"
Or "What are you so happy about Quark? You doubled your profits on your watered Saurian Brandy again? "For your information Cmd Riker just cancelled his vouchers for 12 bars of Gold Pressed Latium."
They actually managed this in Buffy and Angel. Angel called Buffy, you heard her answer, but he just hung up. Then in an episode of Buffy we see her getting this silent call.
That would've been cool cuz I can't tell which DS9 set that is in this TNG scene. I know it's not Sisko's office cuz the office has a much bigger window.
Andrew Chapman well quark was in ops and they don't trust quark in deep space nine plus ops is the bridge of deep space nine for the federation and riker was on offical business so he went through offical channel by contacting the superior officer on deep space nine they sent someone to get quark and escorted him to the bridge or command center of deep space nine while he talked to riker with the security guard waiting on the side to take quark back to his shop after he was done
Oh okay. To be honest, I don't really watch DS9 all that much. I've seen some episodes, but I'm not really into it as much as the other shows. EDIT: How times have changed as I checked out DS9 a year or two after I originally sent this comment and enjoy it much better now. Will we ever get to see it released in HD or 4K?
+Theri4444 That doesn't look like ops to me. I just see a generic DS9 bay window. More likely that River contacted DS9 asking about the Duras sisters and pointed to Quark and Quark was reluctant to answer questions from Starfleet or talk to a man he owed money to.
Andrew Chapman I'm guessing from the shape of the window and the terminal on the desk that he's in Sisko's office. If so, it's a wonder every Starfleet security officer on the station isn't in there with him. :-)
I was never a fan of DS9 growing up but man it is so much better than I gave it credit and Quark and Odo are amazing, Quark really set the show on fire. His episodes are ALMOST as good as any Q episode and some are better.
haha XD u wanna know what else would have been funnier in a DS9 eppisode? Q annoying and tourmenting Quark just for the fun of his own amusement XD HAH now that would have been funnier xD
That's one of the reasons why I love DS9 Star Trek it took a little while getting used to a space station Star Trek but they had many great episodes and Odo and Quark what some of the more interesting ones when they were in it was very underrated and a very well-done show yeah sure or not all the shows were good but there was enough just to make it possible is a good series for as long as Star Trek has been on TV and that says a lot
I love that Quark didn't do the campy thing of only giving part of the information and then saying, "Oh, it's going to cost you _more_ now." Quark knows how much he can take from Riker, so once they agreed to the vouchers, he couldn't really milk him for more.
@@jasonhenry8067 Exactly. But if it was someone else, he would have divulged most of the information, withholding some crucial piece of information to get a little bit more out of the deal. But Will Riker is an idealist who only has what he has and offers it to achieve an ideal. If Quark were working with Thomas Riker, there would have been a few more steps in the "getting the info" process. Thomas would have offered half of the credit back, and then Quark would have withheld a bit, and then Thomas would have relinquished the rest of it. Same exact terms for the final transaction, but different routes. Quark is one of my favorite characters in the whole thing. While he's lacking in ethics, it's in line with his culture. If he were a human and he acted the way he acts, he'd be an unfair person. But as a Ferengi, he just transacts as expected. If anything, he's softer than most Ferengi. It tends to be lost on us because of Rom and Nog who are even more hoo-mon-ish in their values. But if you look at every Ferengi character in the STU, side-by-side--excluding that worm hole scientist (or were there two?)--on the whole he's kind of a good guy. Which is why he's one of my favorite characters. While he is mostly entrenched in his society's culture and values, he can sometimes see values other than latinum. He's a day-walker. He understands and even empathizes with Federation values, while mostly walking the walk of Ferengi culture. If Ferenginar ever joined the federation, he'd be one hell of an ambassador. Given the proper compensation, of course.
48th rule. The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife. And when a Starfleet commander is smiling it's best to remember not just how sharp his knife is but how many and how big.
Man, he played this character so well. I remember some famous actor/actress saying they wanted to become an actor when they as kids, saw their mom in a play and didnt recognize her for half the play. Its so ridiculous how we praise De Niro (the most overrated actor on the planet) or Pacino who play EXACTLY the same person in every movie(which doesnt mean the movie is bad) ,the mannerism, minute traits, gait etc... While actors like this never get such wide recognition. Luckily there are still some good actors in Hollywood like Oldman or Meryl Streep.
Nowadays? Yes, Deniro and Pacino are basically playing parodies of themselves in every movie they are in... but back in the day they were actually excellent actors.
Quark is one of only four characters to be 'TNG', 'DS9' and 'VOY' Morn, Gul Evek and Q are the other. Riker doesn't count as although he was in 'VOY' briefly it was Thomas Riker posing as Will who appeared in 'DS9' (of course played by Jonathan Frakes)
chuckb11 In the first episode Voyager is docked at DS9 before going into the badlands where it encounters the wave that takes it to the Delta Quadrant. Quark tries to con Harry Kim into buying some crap, Paris points out it's worthless starting their friendship. Morn and Rom are in the background.
Fun fact. Riker was the first person to meet and talk to the Ferengi in "The Last Outpost" (S01; E05). Armin Shimerman also played the Ferengi who spoke. The Ferengi were supposed to be TNG's villains, but it became evident they were more comic relief. So the writers eventually settled on the Borg.
I think we can thank him for helping establish the Ferengi as we know them, he played a big part in how their appearance came to be and ironing out their characteristics.
I've always assumed Latinum must be some funky metal that can't be replicated, hence it still has some value in an age when you can get any material you want out of thin air at presumably little to no cost in energy.
actualy Latinum to me is a kind of Sci fi metal thats known to be rare in the Star Trek universe which to many trek cultures like the Ferengi they often have used as currency on their homeworld of Ferenginar and their commercial trade industry known as the f.c.a and many other things. If im alo no mistaken Latninus is over the years that Star Trek has existed has become one of the most well valued and well known sci fi star trek currencies in trek history even in games like Star Trek Online itself.
Evi1M4chine I kind of get where you're coming from, but a hierarchy like this one is simply very well suited to that sort of organization. And it it there really aren't too many options besides stay put, move up, or get out. And many real-life organizations that use this kind of hierarchy don't even like the "stay put" option and rarely let people use it. All that said, I'd say Riker was absolutely qualified for the captain's chair; he was just waiting for a very particular one… And, although he might not really like it, Picard would have likely done well in the admiralty. His diplomatic skills, people skills, eloquence, and command presence were all better suited to captaincy, but could easily work as an admiral.
@Evi1M4chine Actually when they wanted to promote him, it was into a position he is being trained for, Captain. But he wanted to remain with Picard as he alwasy flet he still had much more to learn from Picard about being a captain before taking a ship of his own. That and he was hoping that Picard would get promoted up, and he would get promoted to Captain and get the Enterprise.
Should've included the follow-up: when the Klingon asks if Quark could've been lying, Riker simply says "I don't know why. I'd only be on his doorstep in a few days... and I wouldn't be in as good a mood." That's such a classic, I've used it with telephone CS reps; they get the message.
I've never seen this episode, or the DS9 one with Lursa and Betor (?) for that matter. I wish there were more clever little crossover scenes like this in Trek, it often feels like the shows are in their own little universes. The Stargate shows have tons of really well-done crossovers so it feels like all three shows exist in the same universe.
"Vulcan Love Slave" anyone? Quark talked about that one pretty often! It must have been very popular! (My own crossover) Or maybe Riker just enjoyed the monthly magazine, "Pointy Ears & Shapely rears". 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Or they simply forgot, short notice. Was Morn present? Sometimes with crossovers they actually do forget its a whole other universe. Usually Star Trek is pretty good, (mirror universe had Tuvok)
Not surprising, considering they were initially portrayed as comically villainous. Honestly, all they were missing was a waxed moustache that they could twirl while reciting the Rules of Acquisition. In comparison, once they got past the cardboard cutout and actually gave some Ferengi some depth, they (especially Quark) turned out to be pretty interesting.
KiwiKugai Shimerman had massive influences on the writing and development of the Ferengi. He basically made the Ferengi into what we come to know them as in Deep Space Nine and Enterprise.
He was first in "The Last Outpost" as part of the Ferengi landing party. He then appeared again as another Ferengi in "Peak Performance" in TNG season 2
I was thinking the same. In his head, Riker is thinking... "Not now, Quark! Everyone will hear you!!! And YES! Reserve 'Vulcan Love Slave' for me." 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
So did Riker hit his jackpot offscreen during “Emissary” or “Birthright?” I suspect the latter; the Promenade was pretty grim during the former, I don’t see many Enterprise officers going there just to hang out. Also, he apparently charmed the pants off Kira, and given how unhappy she was about Starfleet taking over the station before Sisko discovered the Wormhole, I doubt she would have been receptive.

I love it when an actor has a really impressive range. Armin Shimerman was able to make Quark one of the best characters in Star Trek, and he also voice acted Andrew Ryan in Bioshock, one of the best characters in gaming.
He is terrific. I saw him at a convention in Richmond this year and we had a wonderful conversation about his time on "Brooklyn Bridge."
Him and Tom Savini are two of the coolest celebrities you can meet.....I've seen Tom get trouble from organizers for giving autographs and pictures for free at conventions where that was against the rules.
Really? They hold trek conferences in Wilkes-Barre?? Cool!

Should've ended with Riker saying "See you at the Dabo table."
(In other words, "you can keep your vouchers, I can always win more next time. And I will.")
Don't kid yourself; Quark would never let Riker at the tables again.
Not Riker’s style. Riker got what he wanted, no reason to barb with Quark any longer. He enjoys Quark for being Quark.

+Ontotheology Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit, if it isn't my old friend from Goodsprings!

tf2whackyengineer I used to watch Seinfeld when I was a kid.
Quark is just awesome. Say what you want about a lot of his practices the man has a sense of fair play.
Not quite a rip-off of those two, since Londo and G'kar were diplomats of their respective people, not loners.
I totally agree; He's likely one of my fav supporting characters in Trek.
I don't think latinum can be replicated.. Which is pretty much why it is so valuable.. Otherwise Quark would be replicating it in his bar...
It's so freaking heartwarming to see how well Riker and Quark get along! 😆😊
@@themajesticotter193 Riker has always been depicted as a lot like Kirk, thinking outside the box, doing the unorthodox.

I like how there's a Starfleet security guard with Quark when he's communicating with the Enterprise. It's sad that Discovery and ST: Picard don't put much attention to details in their shows.
Disco and Picard wish they were as good as TNG and DS9!
Honestly this was when Star Trek was Amazing.. I loved that TNG and Deep Space 9 were in the same universe!!!
Nemesis stunk, and as far as I am concerned, anything after that is non-canon and does not count.
@ZoeQuinnIsAMurderer too bad Riker doesn't remember it

I like how quark decided to cut through the b.s. and get the conversation going to productive and profitable one.
That is the Ferengi way.

More than once actually. in the pilot.

I can hear that in my head; gj ;D
When exchanging cash vouchers for information, it never hurts to have several witnesses.
I think the funniest thing is that you can actually hear him voiding the vouchers for they talk 😂
What is that female security guard doing there? Has Quark been getting himself into trouble again?
Andrew Chapman He was in Ops, probably requires an escort to be in there.
Lol I love how quark just changes the subject. Such a loveable character
The lady with the red hair in the background, has the most amazing body-language I've ever seen. I think I just learned sign language.
"The Ascent" with Quark & Odo stranded on an inhospitable planet remains among my favorite episodes.
Armin & Rene had great chemistry together!
I love that Quark didn't do the campy thing of only giving part of the information and then saying, "Oh, it's going to cost you _more_ now." Quark knows how much he can take from Riker, so once they agreed to the vouchers, he couldn't really milk him for more.
I’m pretty sure he was going to tell him no matter what, it’s just a part of the game they play

At least he is predictable. A Ferengi.
Luckily there are still some good actors in Hollywood like Oldman or Meryl Streep.
apply some burn cream to all that butthurt you have
have you seen master of comedy with deniro? he isn't himself there per example.
Seriously read " Old man Meryl Streep" at first. I was a little confused.
Nowadays? Yes, Deniro and Pacino are basically playing parodies of themselves in every movie they are in... but back in the day they were actually excellent actors.
I disagree regarding De Niro - he plays very different characters. From the bumbling loser to a psychopathic criminal.
I did not know Quark was ever on TNG!
Djarra Quark was in Voyager?
chuckb11 In the first episode Voyager is docked at DS9 before going into the badlands where it encounters the wave that takes it to the Delta Quadrant. Quark tries to con Harry Kim into buying some crap, Paris points out it's worthless starting their friendship. Morn and Rom are in the background.
Djarra Does mean Frakes has been in every Star Trek Series barring TOS.
Sonikgav Frakes yes Will Riker no. He played Tom Riker in DS9, a duplicate but distinct person.
Even tho it came out after, Trip Tucker is technically the first to meet, and talk to the Ferengi, S1E19 Acquisition

This alone demonstrates why Picard and Riker both should've been promoted.
yeah, Riker even had the offer of his own command before the 1st episode of TNG, he thought 1st officer on the Enterprise had more potential.
Besides, if Riker were a captain, that would mean no more away missions.
All that said, I'd say Riker was absolutely qualified for the captain's chair; he was just waiting for a very particular one…
And, although he might not really like it, Picard would have likely done well in the admiralty. His diplomatic skills, people skills, eloquence, and command presence were all better suited to captaincy, but could easily work as an admiral.
@@scaper8 Just watch TNG movies. Picard refused promotions and Riker got the command of the USS Titan.
And, right there, lay the seeds for character development for DS9.
Calling it now, this will end up being some deep-cut reference on Lower Decks season 2.
Riker: Its seems like it was just yesterday, you were hitting me with an energy whip.
Quark: What? Wasn't it fun?

I love it when members of the Federation respect understand members of the Ferengi Society.
Should've included the follow-up: when the Klingon asks if Quark could've been lying, Riker simply says "I don't know why. I'd only be on his doorstep in a few days... and I wouldn't be in as good a mood." That's such a classic, I've used it with telephone CS reps; they get the message.
Riker will always be the biggest bad ass.

No description needed! This scene is win!

They couldn't have even had a Chief OBrien cameo either.

If I remember it right, Armin Shimerman played a generic Ferengi before in 'The Outpost'.
+Sith Smasher they were meant to be the next big enemy in he star trek universe, but with their appearance, they were bumped :)
Shimmerman was one ot THE original Ferengi when they made their first appearance in the show.
Quark is awesome
"I'll send those vouchers to you." "Don't bother. I voided them while we were talking." Classic Quark.
I love how Riker pauses after Quark mentions a holo-suit as if that's what he usually calls for.
I was thinking the same. In his head, Riker is thinking...
"Not now, Quark! Everyone will hear you!!! And YES! Reserve 'Vulcan Love Slave' for me."
😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
So did Riker hit his jackpot offscreen during “Emissary” or “Birthright?” I suspect the latter; the Promenade was pretty grim during the former, I don’t see many Enterprise officers going there just to hang out. Also, he apparently charmed the pants off Kira, and given how unhappy she was about Starfleet taking over the station before Sisko discovered the Wormhole, I doubt she would have been receptive.
