The thing about crashing is the fall always messes with your head a bit. This is one of the best bike packing series I've ever watched. It helps that I've been there ( but only around Saigon) but through this video I can almost smell the place. Be safe!

I cycle toured in Vietnam and Laos and while watching your video I flashed back to the joy and confusion and humor of being there. Cycling makes you see, hear and smell a country like nothing else. You three have a great synergy and the video is so authentic. A real pleasure to watch.

Some of those roads look pretty gnarly ... scraped skin is always painful, but best to pick the bits out and then hit it with an antiseptic early and often, to fight off any post crash infection.
Yes, pick the bits out, but a doctor told me only to use mild soap and water to keep it clean. He said antiseptic damages the tissue and it doesn't heal as well. Who knew? I had already plastered the stuff on my road rash before I got to the clinic, and he kind of did that face that says "damn... wish you hadn't done that".
Good to hear some ACCADACCA at the start of the day for motivation. Sorry to see James bite the dust hope he isn’t too hurt. Road rash can take the edge off anyone’s happy state. Anyone for ice cream 🍨?

My favorite hand wound cover: cynoacrylate aka superglue. It dries a hard layer & helps you get on with everyday things. I’ve cut my hands multiple times (kitchen knives) and gluing it shut us the way to go.
Totally agree. I work with a bunch of welders & heavy duty mechanics and they all swear by superglue for all sorts of cuts. If it works for the medics in the US army, then its probably pretty good stuff.
Ironically, the first medical use of cyanoacrylate was the Vietnam war as a spray to temporarily reduce bleeding in US soldiers so they could be stabilised until reaching a medical centre.
At least no really bad damage to you or your bike. Be careful rest of the way. Hope you recover well.
James: find some Fucidin cream. It's a necessity in the humidity where cuts will otherwose take forever to heal and get septic.

I had gravel picked from my palms when i was a lad i'm more than happy to bin a $30 pair of gloves.
Oh dear, sorry to hear about the little spill. Do take care of the open wounds. It’s the tropics so infection is mainly the thing to watch out for. Keep em clean and dirt free. Germolene or any anti inflammatory stuff is essential.

See if you guys can find some Duoderm for James' hand. It's a bandage that simulates skin. Doesn't stick to wounds and promotes healing. It's used in NICU wards for babies.
Loving the content ;) Take it easy drafting trucks and tuk tuks ect. During my 6 years living in riding in Thailand, i've seen it go wrong plenty of times. Spot on comment the other day re car or moto mirrors...they are never pointing where they are supposed too!

Hey francis, just to let you know if your hungry and ask the locals "rau cai only" meaning (only salad) or "rau cai sou" (veggie soup). Also if you come across a drink call "rau ma" (pennyworth drink) it's really good try it......!

I don't like wearing gloves but I do after my foot slipped into my front wheel 35 years ago on a highway. Just bruises. After that I always wear gloves. Hope you heal quickly.

I always think it's better to learn by doing so perhaps James might wear gloves in future when he's riding in a group and/ or on rough roads. Then again.....
Scrub those wounds thoroughly, get in there with a scrubbing brush and dowse it in ointment! You can end up with blood poisoning so easily - I was in Cairo once and one of my buddies did the same, but it was two small coin sized grazes on knee and elbow - he ended up really ill! The filthy flies didn't help...
Although - gloves do help! Before a crash...

I love watching these videos. Brings back good memories. You boys heading to Da Nang? You should be. That'd be a fun bike ride from Hue (assuming you're going there as well-crazy history with the Vietnam War) over Hai Van Pass down to Da Nang. Stop for coconut water and great views of the ocean on the way down.

I was hit by a car in France and five days later rode out of Paris with a bandaged knee dripping blood. First couple of days is always the most painful but James is young and will heal up fine. Just watch for infection. Hehe

Have you tried the spray on band aids, liquid bandages as they are sometimes sold as. Covers up the cuts prevent infections.
Keep your wounds clean James. Hopefully tomorrow will be less painful? The scenery looks great, the humour between you looks like good fun too?

The sore throat/cold thing might be due to the A/C btw. Got a similar thing when I was in Malaysia - ended up as full blown pneumonia...
Try to sleep with your cuts not covered by bandaids. Helps to dry them out faster.
