    A very fascinating stove design. The fact that it leaves no soot on the cooking vessels when the stove top is used, could be considered a real plus.

    Really like the way this stove was designed to be a wood/gas stove. More of a heavy duty piece than you would think initially by looking at it. Less smoke is always a plus when you're trying to cook over a fire. Looks quite gangley and tall when it's all together, and not at all easy to add more fuel later, but I think for the most part once it's fueled up and running, when would you ever be needing more fuel than that one load anyway? As with many of these things, buying one means something being shipped from overseas, Greece in this case, which is also surprising. They include worldwide shipping in the cost of the unit though...

    This is perfect for a car camping imo. I would never carry it because other gasifiers are less than half the weight, and some even 1/10 the weight, but it has a purpose. The no soot feature is amazing.

    Very interesting stove, Mark. I've holidayed on a couple of Greek islands (including Rhodes) and it's wonderful to be on that soil, seeing the sheer raw nature and beauty from rock to water, and thinking of the legends it inspired with the Odyssey and all the rest. Glorious end of the world, if you ever to Europe you should put it on the list.
    Anway, to risk boring you with more wood-stove chat, I've been wanting a cheap, light firepit with an ash-pan. Doesn't have to be a stove, perhaps just marshmallows, it's for the light and a bit of heat from a fire. I also wanted hot-coal containment. There are a few very small ones that I'd seen before, I think some you've tested and some I've seen others using on Scottish hills youtube diaries, but I found a (I think) new, hexagonal one (that ISN'T the Vargo clone) that was only £7 so I've ordered it from China. I thought you might be interested in seeing what I found. It's possible airflow will be an issue, the ash-pan seems to seal-off the wood-pan, but there is a lot of ventilation in the sides; and I have collapsible bellows if I need. I'll let you know how I get on. Anyway, a Link to EBay UK so you can see it, doubtless on Ali and a bit cheaper too.

    Only question that comes to mind is does the chimney need to be so long?, where it shorter and it still able to create the vortex and clean burn, then it would be lighter more stable and have less heat waste.
    Thank you for showing Mark.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  Před 4 lety

      That is a good question. The length does add to the drawing in of air (chimney principle?) and the vortex created by the fins and vents all add up to the cleaner tertiary burn. It may work with a shorter chimney. The stove does not need the chimney to function well. Its just that much cleaner when it is used. Thanks for commenting

    Colin Furze just posted a video where he created a wood gasifier as an engine to power a lawn mower. One of the major problems he ran into was tar as a byproduct. Have you run into this with any of the gasifier stoves you've tested?

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  Před 4 lety +1

      Interesting. I will watch that video. Not much in the way of tar, especially with this stove. Sounds like the gasification is not complete and the exhaust is cooling down and condensing. I do find all woodgas stoves smoke as they get going but once pyrolisis kicks in they are pretty clean. Thanks for commenting

    • @randal1470
      @randal1470 Před 4 lety

      Mark Young there is tar with gasified engines since the wood gas is created, but not burned, and cooled, before it gets to the engine. The solids condense out of the gas during cooling, it one of the big challenges with gasification to run engines.
      In a stove, the solids are consumed in the fire in the primary as well as secondary combustion.
      While both uses involve wood gas, the operation is completely different.

    Thanks, Mark, but, at that weight, I would rather bring a hot tent titanium folding stove and try to adapt the flue for direct fire cooking. The cost is much, much higher, but the versatility would be unmatched. I am currently considering hot tent camping, and do not own either a tent or stove at this point, so this is theoretical, but logical.
    I do, however, own and use a Kelly Kettle Scout in aluminum, and it makes a great cooker, but the kettle must have water in it to avoid damaging it. With the Kettle on the fire base, it's an awesome rocket stove. The base itself is good for slower cooking, like grilling meats and simmering soups.

    • @darthkek1953
      @darthkek1953 Před 4 lety

      Horses & courses. Not everyone wants to go hot-tenting, or needs to. It's only ever a novelty here in Scotland and would loony tunes in Greece, but in many places in the North Americas it's a lifesaver or at least a game-changer. I had a Kelly Kettle years ago, got given away as I moved countries for jobs. I fancy the "mKettle SAS" as it is compact and snag-free (only boils 0.5 litre, but that's enough for me... it's not intended for group-use).
