With a Kelly kettle you can cook and boil water at the same time. Time it right you can sit down to a fry up and mug of tea at the same time. Nice.

As Bob learned it is a rocket stove and you have to have the water tank/chimney onto the base for it to work. You are right a grilled cheese is excellent along with your tea or coffee. I love mine I just wish I would’ve bought the smaller one instead of the big one. It’s just me and I always have plenty of coffee left over for my thermos. Note: only heat water in the tank and nothing else. The pot/pan on top is for soups and such. When you’re finished? Dump the water and put it back on the heat like you would cast-iron to dry it out before you store it. I bought mine in mid 90s and it has the cork stopper like originals.

Kelly Kettle has a use that no one talks about- it is amazing at churning out hot water bottles fast. Two small hot water bottles in the inside pockets of my ski jacket and 4 big hot water bottles in my bed and I rarely ever even think of turning the heat on in my camper. Kelly Kettle has paid for itself dozens of times over in saved propane.

I have to give you the gold star on this excellent review. I watched it 4 times.
You were excellent in giving pros and cons on each cooker. I'm impressed with the way you corrected yourself on the Kelly cooker... anyone else would have re-shot the video, but you did this in one take...
    You're totally unpretentious.
I strongly suggest that you make this a regular feature, perhaps a quarterly review...
I am interested in your opinion on the firebox stove, as well.
    Many thanks 😀

Love the Kelly kettle! Just important to remember not to use it on a wood or plastic surface, because the base will burn/melt it... Also important to not overfill it with water as it will start splattering out when it boils, potentially burning you, and it will extinguish the fire in the base.

Very good video. Enjoyed the comparison. I agree with you about the portability and time. For backpacking I would use the Solo Stove, for survival and quick hot drinks and in areas where large wood was scarce the Kelly Kettle, but for van living and car camping where size and weight are not as much of an issue I would go with the larger and longer burning Rocket Stove. Thanks for the review!

This is an older vid because Kelly kettle now has a mush better whistling plug that you dont have to remove while using it. The top cooking platform is mush improved. And starting the fire in the kettle is easy when you follow directions. Turn to the wind and start fire in the top.

I'm leaning towards the solostove because I will more than likely be going camping solo. I don't see myself being in a rush. When I grill, using charcoal, I am never in a rush. I am doing it to relax, hangout, and listen to some good music.
I also like how it holds all of the ashes inside until you dump them. I am not worried about being in any situation where a fire hazard would be an issue, but it's nice knowing that the solostove keeps all of the ashes inside after they burn out, minus whatever might escape from the top of course.

Hi, great video! Just thought you might like to know that the Kelly kettle boils faster if you face the hole at the bottom of the kettle into the wind. It’s a storm kettle so it likes a good breeze. Also if you don’t want to burn yourself when taking off the kettle then hold the handle at 90 degrees with one hand and the chain with the other hand. 😊

I have 2 of them and I travel quite a bit on a motorcycle do space is my first consideration, and the Sterno stove is about as small as they get unless you get into the $100 range for some back packing stuff and even then you've got to carry a bottle of fuel that is about 4 times the size of a Sterno can. That said if I was in a car I'd go for one of the wood stoves you demonstrated. Thanks again.

I've built a few rocket stoves in various materials over the years, but most of the time when I'm camping I use the fire ring method. By closing all but 1/4 of your fire ring you have developed a cooking area in 1/4 of the space (increasing the area when you have a larger group). I keep a 1 burner LP gas Coleman stove in case it rains. After Bob's recommendation, I also bought a Gas One single burner butane stove. Although I've just use the butane stove once I think aluminum would work faster than my cast iron pans on it. All this to cook with & I don't have a microwave😂

Have you ever seen an outdoor oven/grill called a Cobb Cooker? I have one and it uses an ingenious method of convection heat to make an oven. I used only 4 pieces of charcoal briquette and was able to fully cook (bake) a half dozen big pieces of chicken and afterward I cooked 2 large hamburger patties & toasted the buns. I could have even cooked more food as I has heat for at least an hour after I finished the burgers. Both the chicken and burger was cooked to a well done state. It is the most efficient camping oven I've ever seen.

The kelly stove would be exceptionally for the well healed if it had the same container, but made with stainless steel so it's healthy long term. the rocket stove that I welded up boils a large pot (not lobster pot in 7 minutes with no smoke, so I'll hold with that one. The fourth option isn't a clean burning rocket stove, but it does well and considering it folds up it's great. The one you like is what I'd get if I didn't have one, though mine is smaller. That one has a safer foot print if someone gets careless.

The problem with wood stoves like these is you have to use them outside unless you can rig up some type of chimney and get the proper draft going. Also, they can't be used in areas with burn bans. And if you want to cook something that requires a little finesse with the heat control, it's harder to do with these. Takes lots of practice.

Yea, sorry that's not a rocket stove on your right. It's a stove of some sort. If you had a real rocket stove you would see the fire from the bottom being pulled up. The 🚀 effect. The stove in the middle was pulling air from the bottom sending it up heating up the water. That's a 🚀 stove effect. So many people making L shaped rocket stoves out of 4" square tubing with an insert between to add wood or wood chips controlling how much air gets inside the bottom controlling your flame output. Very cool stuff!
I do like your video, out trying different stoves and seeing what they can do or what you can do with them is always fun and imaginative!

Rocket stoves are awesome but the design on that on is poor. You could improve it greatly by having a half pipe over the wood feeding rack and an extension tube on top.
They should be shaped as a capitol L. There is also an optimal feed tube to chimney height ratio but I don't recall what it is.
