    Glad to see you try the VIRE. I’ve owned this stove for a year and have used it a lot. It’s the first rocket stove I’ve used that actually works! It is heavy, but robust, and burns HOT. I live in southern US so I can’t speak to cold weather use but in over a dozen burns it has always been easy to start and maintain and has always worked well. Something I can’t say about the HA rocket stove.....I have had this thing roaring and burning way hotter than necessary for cooking, no warping and folds the same. It is a little tricksy to latch together but gets easier after a few times. I really look forward to your extended use review. I enjoy all of your videos!

    Thumbling about with the stove like that to set it up looks really unprofessional and makes a person look reasonably stupid, but thats real life, thats how it is for all of us, we really dont need a polished up advert with a beautiful woman unfolding this and cooking within a minute of getting it out of the box, this is raw and how reviews really should be done, its this kind of review that will make me go and buy this, awesome stuff Mark

    Any rocket stove that folds flat will have to make serious compromises. That being said, I was impressed by its performance, at least in your warm-weather venue. Depending on the situation, I would be happy to use it.
    I have been working on the design of a true rocket stove and I will prototype it soon. I have selected the materials for my stove. I am constructing it around a sacrificial PVC form that will burn out on the first few uses. I am using a mineral fiber composite that's capable of withstanding 2000 F. The bonding agent is sodium silicate. It will have an insulated combustion chamber that uses pearlite bonded with sodium silicate. The exterior is a mineral fiber composite shell. I have separated the fuel feed chute from the combustion air port. The combustion port feeds air tangentially into the combustion chamber which should initiate and maintain the vortex easily. The stove will be very light but is unsuitable for backpacking.

    You mentioned that the fire ban had been lifted and you could now cook in the woods. I came across a product called Old Faithful Flameless Heating Packs that allows you to cook without a flame. It's apparently designed for something called "Old Faithful Geyser Flameless Portable Cooker", but any appropriately sized pot could work. You drop the palm sized package in a pot and pour water on it and it immediately starts steaming. I watched this in action on a You Tube site called "Camping Together". The video was named "Rain Camp in the Pine Woods". I thought you might wish to check it out. This would allow you to cook during a fire ban.

    Thanks for your excellent review. This stove looks very promising and could be an good stove to consider for those who are only car camping and want light portable gear. While I appreciate your points about weight being a consideration for backpacking there is a point to be made about how useful it might be for non-backpacking applications such a use at a trail head camp then left in the vehicle in favor of a smaller box type wood stove etc. This stove might also be considered for canoe camping or horse camping where weight is less of an issue. In my youth I carried a small Svea Stove which is compact, reasonably light and very efficient. However burned white gas which had to be packed in along with the stove and added considerable weight. Even so the stove proved such a benefit over an open fire that the additional weight seemed less of a concern. Being a lot younger and more fit in my 20's than is the case now, about 50 years on I suppose I was more able to adapt to my gear rather than the reverse - LOL.

    This design looks for nice, and portable. In good weather I tend to use a stove for extended period of time. Where does all the ash go, how to clean out the ash during extended burn so it doesn't choke out the fire? In my flat pack rocket stove I am able to clean out during the cooking process. If I don't clean out time by time I can tell it is not getting enough air.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  Před 3 lety

      Actually, that is one of things I am looking at before I do my final review. So far, I can see how ash could build up with extended use. It would be a challenge to remove while the stove is in use. Having said that, there is a fair amount of space under the feed ramp for the ash to collect. Still, I will watch and report back, soon hopefully. Thanks for commenting

    After the fires you’ve lit in it, was there just fine ash to dump out afterwards? Was it easy to clean? Any accumulation of creosote? Any difficulty with the hinges folding it up after cleaning? I think for a stove of this size/weight and capability I would go with a pot of at least 1 liters up to maybe 5 liters. It will easily support a pan of 10" diameter, including a cast iron pan.
