This was great. Ralph's voice was the soundtrack to my youth. I loved hearing his old stories, his wit, and analysis. Sadly, because he tended to misspeak and have some verbal blunders and malapropisms, when he passed away so many treated him as nothing but an inarticulate clown. Nothing was further from the truth. He was an underrated ballplayer and underrated broadcaster.
Me too! I grew up watching every Met game and listening to Ralph Kiner. When I was little, and this nutty little show would come on after the game called "Kiner's Korner", at first I didn't pay much attention. But by the time I was 8 or 9 years old, I really felt like I missed out if I didn't stay to watch it after the game. Even though he was a "Mets" announcer, I always had great respect for how he called the game fairly, and gave kudos to the other team. Near the end of the '85 season, I particularly remember him talking about what a good ball club the St Louis Cardinals had, and how the Mets faced a formidable challenge in trying to win the pennant from them. (And he was right, St Louis beat them out that year). Yep... Ralph Kiner and the Mets. What good times!
