  • Motocross is a crazy, fuel-filled wild ride that a lot of us mountain bikers including Rich Payne himself have either tried at some point, ride as well as their MTB or watch online, but just how hard is it and can it really be harder than DH mountain biking!?

The sport you're more competitive in is the sport that's harder. What makes a sport hard, aside from the physical factor, is how hard you're pushing it and what you want to accomplish in the sport. At least that's how I think about it 🤙

Love the video! Though I think it is an unfair comparison. MX boys aren't used to trees and tight spaces :) Find a FIM EnduroGP racer and than compare :) Overall, the biggest factor that can't compare here is time. MX is 45min race, DH is way less. Overall I think one sport compliments another very well in terms of training, no mater which one you race at.

I raced amateur MX years back and now I do MTB. Tommy's comment about the crash is spot on. Here's how I compare crashing in both:
When you crash on a motorcycle, you think "Ok, this is going to hurt. If I push the bike away now, I may be able to avoid that rock. Then, just as I'm about to hit the ground, I'll tuck to the right and hit with my helmet first while holding my arms in...".
When you crash on a bicycle, you think "Oh sh*t!".

I think its because the moto handles so good and when you fk up you have more time to ride it out or bail were as the mtb the bike can be spat out behind you in a second sure the new bikes are way better but it still happens super fast ie you go from the front sliding just a bit to a lot and eating dirt .

      Crashing definitely goes to moto.
A friend who led trips for Rim Tours in Moab also rode moto all over the area. He was equally skilled in both. But he happened to add, "When you crash on your mountain bike, it hurts. When you crash on a moto, you're breaking bones and calling SAR!"

There's something about the old school bikes & mountain bikes that were able to inflict some pretty good pain. I landed on my face jumping as a kid. Amazed I didn't break anything, especially my neck. And a former colleague did just that 30 years ago and is a quadriplegic today unfortunately.
But "Friday Fails" on Pink Bike show how kids today do a FINE job almost killing themselves on current design mountain bikes. Go big enough and the consequences get severe!

    • @NONO-hz4vo

This makes way more sense. MX racing is one of the most physically demanding sports you can do because the limiting factor at almost junctures of the race is your physical ability, the bike has far more power than you do and the track has enough traction to facilitate it.
Enduro however features tracks that the limit is your skill more frequently than your physical abilities. The track only allows you to apply so much before the ability to negotiate the next feature is limiting. This is why 450's don't often feature in enduro racing because the lightweight and fast response of a 300 is more useful.
For a skilled rider, the MX course will accommodate any effort you can muster across almost all your body. DH or Enduro or XC on a bike however will be much more limited by your legs and lungs.
MX is for sure harder if you have the skill. The only thing I have found as exhausting is snowmobiling which is similar in the sense that the machine has far more capability than you do and will literally max whatever you got and then some assuming you don't crash.

Honestly seems like they are too different to say which one is "harder". In terms of skill, it probably depends on the person, which one you find "easier".
And physically it's also dependent on the kind of athelet you are (or aren'). Mototcross seems more endurance / strength based as Downhill is more sprints / quick and precise movements

  • @SkadooHusky
    @SkadooHusky Před rokem +8

I've found moto to be more physically demanding all around while mountain biking mainly pushes my cardio.
I've also found mountain bike crashes to be worse but moto crashes do have more potential for serious injury.

    • @NONO-hz4vo
      @NONO-hz4vo Před rokem +3

Agree 100% with this. Motorcycles will demand more than my body can muster and from almost every muscle. Bikes are more cardio and even the arm pump of DH doesn't compare to a MX track.
The gear I wear when riding enduro on a motorcycle is far more protective than what I ride DH on a mtb. The pants are way heavier with better protection, the chest and arms are fully covered, and even the helmet is much more substantial. While my MTB isn't going to violently accelerate me into the stratosphere, it is much lighter and has a lot less suspension on tire grip than a dirt bike. It also lacks a motor which allows you to manipulate the bikes axis in a lot of ways to help prevent crashes. This makes it much more likely that when something does go wrong it goes wrong very fast as the combined mass of the system is much lower and the forgiveness in the forces that allow you to maintain your intended path are much smaller.

I think it's hard to tell which is harder between most sports. It seems like whenever you see a very fit professional athlete try another sport, they're always huffing and puffing because they're just not used to that specific sport. They're muscles are trained to work efficiently at that one thing and any change up requires more energy. Of course, they could probably get used to it quicker than the average person because they are still fit, but that initial change is still hard regardless.

    • @Chad_Thundernuts
      @Chad_Thundernuts Před 11 měsíci

A good example of that is archery. It's not uncommon for people who are fit and strong to get injured when starting archery because they assume they have the strength to handle a powerful bow, yet the muscle group combinations involved in archery are quite unique to the sport and most people don't train for that specific movement in most other sports and strength exercises. That very mistake has put many people out of the sport for good.

Excellent video! I also ride mountain bikes and Moto and I'm not sure one is actually harder than the other . The problem is, downhill world cup racing is the absolute top tier pinnacle of racing in mtb. The equivalent for that in dirt bikes is actually supercross not motocross. That would be really hard to test unfortunately because most people will never get to or be able to ride a (real) supercross track, no matter how good they are on a moto track.

As a bike company I’d say mountain biking is harder depending on how you do it because if you have to pedal and with MX you don’t, when you go uphill it’s painful at the start but mx is more dangerous in some terms depending on if you do downhill you can just fly off your bike and die there but with MX lots of the time the worst that can happen is broken bones so I’d say MTB is more dangerous but it’s your opinion.

Yes pedal bikes can help you develop your fitness & learn a lot of skills that can transfer to MX such as bike control, spotting your likes and learning to jump etc. Problem for me now is I'm a lot older so fatigue comes with age for me on a mountain bike, but you can get a sweat on with MX and MTB because of the effort you put in throwing the bike around & adjusting your body position because on an MX bike you are never still.
In fact GMBN have tried Cycle speedway, you should try the real thing. That's going to be the tester.

I raced motocross on the Darwin team in Australia years ago, never finished first but always put in a good run. Did 150 foot step downs, triples, had a handful of freestyle tricks in my repertoire.
Had never ridden a bmx track, nor had I ever jumped a push bike, but bought a Norco Fluid (full suspension) and headed down to the local down hill track in Perth as I thought the transition would be pretty easy. Boy was I wrong, I felt like I'd never ridden anything before in my life! Jumps are much, much harder on a bike as you can't just gas your way in to the up ramp and getting the bike balanced pre-takeoff is insanely different.
That being said, crashes on the dirt bike have hurt more thus far. Two notable ones were I came up short on a triple and smashed most of myself on the impact of the upside of the last jump in the three. Secondly I went in to a berm waaaay too hot and went over the top, as I was cartwheeling down the outside of the berm I saw my dirt bike doing the same and heading towards me. Not much I could do but brace for impact. The bike did one final cartwheel and the rear wheel smashed the jaw line of my helmet (thankfully O'neal helmets can take a beating!!) and the rear wheel came to rest on my neck still spinning, though the bike had stalled, so I just had to do my best to angle myself so it didn't cut my head off completely. Ended up with a pretty good scrape on my neck where the tyre spun down, and I'd put my teeth through my bottom lip when the wheel impacted me.
Funniest thing about the last crash was my girlfriend was heading interstate to see me, and two blokes were on the coach trying to pick her up for the whole trip despite her telling them she has a partner. Anyway, the second accident above happened about an hour before I was picking her up so me and my mate loaded our bikes on the ute and went in to town to pick her up. I walked over to meet her, blood pouring out my mouth, covered in dirt, looking pretty dishevelled and she pointed out the two meat heads trying to tune her. I laughed in their direction as they seemed to be walking over after they got their bags but they turned and high tailed it!!!! still chuckle about it to this day :)
All in all, mountain bikes are way harder in my eyes. It's like gliding vs powered flight, where gliding is much harder and is a more pure form of the sport. I'm loving mountain biking, picked up a Nukeproof Giga this week and am building it ready for the weekend. Can't wait. Also the people I meet on the trails are epic, love you guys immensely, a different type of person to motocross which seemed to be all "dude-bros" whereas the mountain biking crew are just epic all round. Unhinged gentlemen and ladies, refined yet uncouth. I love it :)

    What's harder?
Consider this. I was riding a dual sport in Oregon several years ago. Was discovering all sorts of great forest service roads. One road took me up, up, up and up for about 30 minutes to amazing views at the top. As a dedicated mountain biker, I was awed at the ease in which I climbed this road. What would have been a grueling 2-3 hour climb, was instead a 30 minute blast of a ride.
Mile for mile, mountain biking is MUCH harder. The cardio requirements are so far head and shoulders above dirt biking. The difficulty of red-lining your heart rate WHILE attempting technical ascents have no equal in motos. Consider Slickrock Trail in Moab or Hole in the Ground at Donner Pass. Two examples of rides that are killer on a mountain bike, a total blast on a moto. Barely break a sweat!
Now if you're riding balls-out motocross, then ok, the two get closer in difficulty. Anyone jumping 40 feet in the air doing doubles or triples is definitely athletically skilled. But given the two, mountain biking requires so much more cardio & strength combined.

You need to go watch Erzberg Rodeo. You can't compare a trail made for an anemically powered mountain bike to one designed for 50+ hp dirt bikes. 1500 riders start this race and only a handful finish. The exhaustion they face trying to get up hills or pushing their bikes after a failed attempt is far beyond anything you will experience on a mountain bike. There just is no way you can utilize the amount of muscle on a bike that can be applied to riding a dirt bike.
If you want to sit on your butt and putt around your local trails on a dirt bike, then yep that is way easier than doing it on a mountain bike. If you want to push your body to the limit, the dirt bike will require all you have and more because the motor doesn't care if you are tired.

hey guys! I loved your video, but in my opinion, the comparison that best suits mountain bikes is enduro, and in enduro there are several spectrums that can be explored, from the Bajas, Enduro GP, Hard enduro and Enduro Cross. Because for example enduro cross is perhaps as physically demanding as DH and hard enduro requires tremendous physical endurance as a trial technique. I would love to see in a next video, a training with your compatriot @Billy Bolt who is also a top mountain biker, or the champ steve holcombe. :)

I used to do motorcycle track days before junking it all in. Living in the FoD, it just makes sense to hit the trails. I've got to say that MX is a lot harder than hitting bike park laps. It took me a day out riding with Dave Thorpe on his experience days to get myself dialled in on dirt. He actually commented "When you're on the CRF, just think about it as sending it down a DH track instead of hitting craner curves on the R1" and it all clicked.... Transferrable skills but not precisely identical. Again, as most other folk have said, a moto enduro day would be a good comparison. See how a sesh in the Quantocks would compare to a day out in FoD around the Wye.

My preconceived notions were that riding dirt bikes was easy and that I would have more fun on my mountain bike working for the ups and downs. Rode mountain bikes since the early 90's in the PNW and loved it. Didn't get a dirt bike till I was 30. Absolutely love the monsters. A lot of the same fun you get on a bike plus you get suspension that even the greatest DH bikes could only dream of and power that eMTB's won't ever see.
Major downside is unless you own property or have trails nearby you won't be able to ride often. If you do decide to get a bike don't go get the latest and greatest fastest machine you can find. A YZ 125 will make you a far better rider and you will have a blast doing it.

MX is far more difficult. You're riding a way heavier bike at a much faster speed. Imagine racing a MTB in a track that is basically all sand basically never happens but happens in MX all the time. It's considered the 2nd most physically demanding sport behind soccer and the most dangerous sport period. There's a reason you can watch MX on TV and MTB TV coverage is completely non existent.

Both sports require skill and technique to be efficient on the bike, which results faster lap times, higher average speed and lower HR. Motocross on hard pack track is like riding a blue trail, while motocross on a deep sand track is like a double black. Enduro on a motorbike is similar to enduro mtb, line choice and efficiency are key.
I think a sprint lap in supercross and fast and techical downhill with jumps and rhytm lanes would be equal.

I think they're equally difficult in different ways. To me, MTB requires a higher level of fitness for a beginner to start getting good. Dirtbiking does not need that same level of fitness at the entry level. But for both, the skill ceiling is extremely high and the fitness requirement to compete at a top level is on par with sports like swimming and track & field.

eMTB's are changing this. It used to be rare to be on a lengthy trail to ever see an out of shape rider. Now you will run into plenty of them "pedaling" with dropper down up the hills miles from the trailhead.
Whether this is better or worse is debatable. Hopefully the out of shape riders love the pursuit and become in shape riders instead of the in shape riders finding the downhill is where the fun is to be had and gradually losing their fitness as they motor by anything that isn't gravity fed.

I do both and have done both at high level (podiums on National enduro series and national MX championships)
Both sports are so similar and yet so different
Is what I will say over the two is you need to be overall fitter to race Moto over DH and Enduro (however XC mountain biking might be a different kettle of fish again). there is also a huge difference in heart rates between racing Moto with a start etc and just a generic practice day, A race day will pull you out your comfort zone and the competition will be much amplified.
Also in Moto, Fitness can mask skill (to a point) however in downhill if you’ve got no skill you’ve got no chance
Over a race period aswell you can afford a mistake or two during a 20 minute race whereas in DH you have to be mistake free which makes it more intensive and skilful knowing when and where to push to minimise the probability of a crash.
Mega content though boys - More comparison videos would be ace especially as so many of us do both.
